Collins Hill and M.L. King suffer first losses of season

Chat with the AJC's Michael Carvell

Chat live on Fridays with the AJC's Michael Carvell

Peachtree Ridge knocked Collins Hill from the ranks of Gwinnett’s undefeated Class AAAAA teams with a 21-7 win on Friday, but the Lions were not really in the mood to celebrate afterwards.

As the final buzzer sounded, there were no Peachtree Ridge players jumping up and down in jubilation, and coach Bill Ballard barely cracked a post-game smile.

When asked why he wasn’t happier, Ballard shrugged his shoulders and said, “I don’t know what to say. We’ve just got to play better. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Peachtree Ridge’s Brandon Stanley scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns as the No. 9-ranked Lions improved to 6-1. Unranked Collins Hill dropped it first game after kicking off the year with six wins in a row.

“There’s some learning moments we need to look at,” Collins Hill coach Billy Wells said. “In big games, you can’t make crucial mistakes … like turning it the ball over, and taking sacks when you don’t need to. We’ve got a lot of learning to do.”

It was a devastating loss for Collins Hill. All the Eagles had to do was find a way to get past Peachtree Ridge and they had inside track on the Region 7-AAAAA championship and an undefeated regular season. Due to a wacky conference schedule, Collins Hill does not play against still-undefeated North Gwinnett this season. North Gwinnett is ranked No. 3.

No. 1 Grayson, which is in a different region, improved to 8-0 on Friday.

So which Class AAAAA team do you think is the state’s best after the Friday games? Is it Grayson or North Gwinnett? Stephenson — which shut out MLK on ESPNU? Newnan or Northside-Warner Robins?

YOU make the call.

Top 5 Rankings IMO should be:

1. Grayson
2. Northside
3. North Gwinnett
4. Newnan
5. Stephenson

In my opinion Northside and North Gwinnett are better than Grayson this year though.

But you asked who is the best team in the state and that is with out a doubt still Lowndes.

Look to defense – as it consistently wins championships. Top 5 Great defenses:

Northside WR (can play with anyone)
Lowndes (Can play some D – but only one shutout
Grayson (throw out Brookwood game and they have given up less then 5 pts p/game – offense does not allow anyone else to have the ball.)
Woodstock (throw out McEachern game and they have given up less then 5 pts p/game)
Peachtree Ridge (51 of 78 pts allowed came at Lowndes.

Honorable Mention:
Newnan (4 pts a game – but – the strength of schedule is telling – one of lowest in state),
Stephenson (Holding King scoreless proves they can play – but their SOS is worse then Newnans)

Humble Observer

Plowboy: That is somewhat a silly statement. Every team on my list have given up late scores in “silly time”. Lowndes is quite good – I think we all know that – did you notice I put them in Top 5?

Grayson, in my opinion, may have the best defense simply due to their ball control offense! They make a 48 minute game a 20 minute game! But, Lowndes explosiveness counters that.

What I cannot forgive is that Lowndes gave up a 60 yard play that allowed NSWR to take that game. Regardless, I think Lowndes was the best team on the field that night.

Any of the five top teams I listed can win the state – but – I think the top 3 are Grayson, Lowndes and NSWR (in that order).

Woodstock is way under the radar and can play with anyone – and they are very much a dark-horse to win it all. They caught my eye last year with their run in the playoff’s last year! Everyone forgets that baring a late mistake they beat Camden and most likely win the State.

I thought it would be a rebuilding year for them – but – Coach O has a bunch of Juniors playing great football! They dominated McE for 30 minutes. Some bad calls, silly mistakes, unfortunate luck and immaturity cost them in the 2nd game of the season.

I want to point out: I have no loyalty to any team! I have no kids playing ball (anymore) and I am just a big HS fan – and call them like I see it.

They are the team we love to hate, but Stephenson is definitely flying under the radar this year. I underestimated them and I feel that someone else will too in the playoffs. They have the most talented running back unit since Kregg Lumpkin ran for them. 11, 15, and especially 25 were capable of taking it to the house at anytime. And this was a good MLK defense too. Their d-line is excellent, their qb rarely makes serious mistakes like MLK’s QB… We on the MLK side did not even get upset at the outcome because we were simply outplayed.

If Stephenson took every game seriously like they do against MLK, their is no doubt that they will go deep in the playoffs and make state.

Without a doubt–Lowndes in the best AAAAA team. NSWR is coming on stronger like Newnan, Camden County, etc., teams that are heavily loaded with sophmores and juniors but will being playing a grade higher during play-off time due to their experince in combat. If you review the rosters of these teams, there may be many seniors but I bet most don’t play– so it’s the younger players carrying the load..

GO UG I think we have the talent to beat any team in this state if our coach, and I did not say coaches will put his personal business on the side for at least 5 to 6 more weeks and concentrate on these boys and the tasks at hand. It is no way that we should have struggled to beat a 2-4 team with the talent we have. There were many questionable personnel moves as well as play calling. Even some of the boys on the team are getting frustrated with the same plays being called every series and not what they practice all week. Again I say put the best 11 on the field on both sides of the ball and put the ball in the hand of your play makers and STOP playing DADDY BALL! This team is loaded with talent and this is not the same team from last year contrary to the belief that I have been hearing stephenson people saying. This is not parks and recreation. With all of that being said, yes we stand a very good chance against Stephenson.

There is a lot of football to play. Any of the top ten teams can win it all.

Home field advantage will likely play a big role in who makes it to the dome. This puts Lowndes at a disadvantage.

I have to admit, our defense held strong in the second half (North Gwinnett) but I’m not sure if we can still hold strong enough to stay no. 3. Depends. But I’d still rank Lowndes no. 1, NS-WR no. 2, NG -3 .
I pick Lowndes no. 1 because they are still that good. I’m going to try to be optimistic about NG, and also Grayson… but if you struggle against Brookwood, then there are some issues. NG started off strong and finished strong in a big 43-13 win over Brookwood. There’s our proof. Grayson is sort of overrated.

Before anyone puts Lowndes on the road for the entire playoffs, remember NSWR still has to play Warner Robbins (5-2) and Colquitt (6-1) before they win 1-AAAAA. A loss to Colquitt creates a 3 way tie, Lowndes win the tie with more AAAAA victories. Of course, Lowndes must win out. Colquitt may be the sleeper in the region.

Stephenson is good but MLK is not as good as the AJC and the media outlets hype them up to be. When we faced off against MLK the score was 9-13 and that was with our 10th grade quarterback and a somewhat one dimensional offensive scheme we held Mack Brown to I think It was like 70 yards. The point is that SWD even without our offense was able to contain MLK so if MLK is phenomenal we are a serious contender. And I say this because all of you South Georgia posters and Gwinett posters will start to knock the fact that we are good. Which if you’re right proves that MLK is not far behind us the people they beat in their region had a combined record of 10-25 all weak non-contenders. So Mlk will have a first round exit. As for Stephenson they are the only school in Dekalb with a serious chance to win the AAAAA state championship. Mlk will adavance to like the second round, and make an exit.

It is really funny reading what everyone says about Grayson not blowing out games. You really don’t understand the Grayson game plan. Grayson plays strong defense and ball control offense. Go back and look at time of possession and you might get a better idea of the strength of the Grayson offense. The other big issue, perhaps the biggest, is that Coach Conn does not run up scores. He is about winning the game, period. Good example – Grayson is up by 10 against Brookwood with the ball on the Brookwood 10 yard line with 40 seconds to go. It would be a very easy almost guaranteed 3 points and quite possibly 7 points given the momentum at that point but Grayson takes a knee to end the game. On the other hand, Brookwood is ahead of Meadowcreek by like 40 and takes a timeout with only a few seconds remaining so they can get another play off to score. Would everyone look more favorably on Grayson if the score had been 29-12 instead of 22-12?

Is Grayson the best in the state? I don’t know. I do think that if you just look at the scores and base your judgment on that you are underrating the team. Based on their results so far this year, until they lose, I think they stay number 1.

I know this blog is about the best team but I want to bring up something I saw last night at the Grayson-Berkmar game. The Berkmar guys were playing their hearts out. The cheerleaders were cheering their lungs out. The band, while small, was really good and doing everything they could to support the team. Why am I bringing this up? We counted 41 people in the visitor stands. That is awful. That says that every player, cheerleader and band member did not have a parent or other family member there! I know Berkmar is struggling this year but what is with not supporting your child, brother or sister? I don’t get it at all. I am guessing that some of the Berkmar fans were on the Grayson side due to the layout of the stands and access but still, what is the deal? We were walking out when Berkmar came out of the dressing room heading to the buses and I congratulated the player walking next to us for playing hard. He responded back “Thank you sir.” It is sad that it is the opposing team’s fans that are the only ones telling you that you played hard.

Come on people, support your team! These boys are doing their best even if the end result is not what they are hoping for.

By the way – GO TECH!!!! :)

Hey highschool football fan, you’ve made an assumptions and a mistake. First, your 3-way tie only occurs assuming Colquitt beats Warner Robins also. I see that one as a 50-50 chance, you have to account for that. Second, you’re mistaken about the tiebreaker…Region 1’s tiebreaker is least points given up defensively in region play. Currently overall, that’s WR with only 17 given, Northside with 30, Lowndes 31, Colquitt 69. WR still has to play three top offenses, that’s why they’re so far ahead right now. Northside and Lowndes is a wash. Colquitt’s OUT of this race already, they won’t win a three-way tie although of course it’s technically possible. So in your three-way scenario, it’ll be either Northside or Lowndes, have to see who plays better defense for the last three games.

Down South Fan. Your kidding me right? I dont think the Wildcats are going to be able to pull it together to make state. First off, they prob aren’t compleatly motiveated about their coach leaving like a movie would have it, plus you have so many great teams this year. After seeing them play a high quality team and them only scoring 7 on the first string D….just wont happen.

Why do Stephenson fans suddenly think their team is going to go deep in the playoffs? they have great talent every year and manage to exit the playoffs in the 1st or 2nd round…that Stephenson-MLK on ESPNU was absolutely HORRIBLE and very sloppy if you consider the number of turnovers in that game. both teams lack decent play on special teams and both teams severely lacked discipline. if Stephenson had a decent coaching staff that focused on the fundamentals…they could be scary…but knowing their playoff history, i dont think anyone is taking them seriously as a state title contender. i can think of about 8 or 9 teams that would beat Stephenson. heck i can think of 4 teams right here in Region 1AAAAA.

im a newnan alum, we may not play the hardest schedule in the regular season but we obviously can play with the tougher regions when it comes playoff time… we beat coffee county in 2007 24 to 21 and then rocked tift county 42 0, both teams which come from region 1 which is a power house region, then following tift county we beat north gwinnet 20 3.. so i dont think our regular season schedule should decide on how good of a team newnan really has.. and look at camden they have the weakest regioin in georgia and theyre the defending champs

Debate all you want, who is the best, the bottom line is the reigning Ga State Champs are the Camden Wildcats. Until someone beats them in the playoffs, they are still your State Champs. The road to the Dome goes through Camden County, not Grayson, Lowdnes, NSWR, PTR,Newnan, Woodstock, Mceachern, Stephenson, MLK or any of the other various schools. The playoffs start a new season for all teams. The regular season has 3 games left and some teams still have to play one another. No disrespect to any on these schools, but Camden has to be eliminated from the playoffs before a new team can be crowned. Most schools do not want to travel to southeast Ga for the fear of a long travel home empty handed. I have been to a lot of high school games, but Camden has got to be the loudest place to play a football game. I look at all of the schools this year and it is hard to say or see who will be the eventual 5A champion for Ga. There are between 10-12 teams that could win it all, whoever it is will have earned it. The playoffs will be a treachous gauntlett.

Its like that anytime Meadow Creek, Shiloh, Berkmar, come over to our stadium. We always feel Sorry for the players. You can not have a successful team anywere without parent and fan support! How anyone can know their son or daughter is out there on a Friday night playing or cheering their hearts out and not be there, I do not know. Not to mention this is a very physical game and I would not want to be called and told my son is in the hospital, I would want to follow right behind. Crazy!

On the other hand, it must not take parent support for a great band because Meadow Creek rocks our socks off every year!!!!

Didnt Grayson already beat Camden in the Dome this year? Keep in mind Camden was the champs in 2008. You do not have all the same players on your team this year and neither does Grayson, therefor this presents two different teams and you have already been beat by Grayson!! Get over it!!!

I had a wonderful opportunity to see Peachtree Ridge and Collins Hill play on Friday before leaving for Nashville to see the Dawgs play Vanderbilt and attend a wedding. If Todd Holcomb, Michael Carvell, and the AJC staff attempt to make Peachtree Ridge legitimate state championship contenders, we all have to question the integrity of the AJC staff.

Forget the questions about what P-Ridge would do in Region 1-AAAAA. I doubt P-Ridge would finish top 3 or 4 in Region 8-AAAAA or even Region 2-AAAAA. They do not hit. Collins Hill players were afraid of the moment…nervous. They lost the game in the first quarter. However, P-Ridge’s offense is questionable and their defense can not stop any strong high school offensive unit. Missed tackles, very few gang tackles, and just no push on either side on the line (interior box). If you are a defensive player for Peachtree Ridge, you better make the open field tackle because you are usually out on an island all alone. Words like lazy and soft have to come to mind.

If P-Ridge wins their region, that means that North Gwinnett is horrible! The winner of Region 7-AAAAA opens with the playoffs against the fourth seed from Region 6-AAAAA. Winning that game will be a stretch. Let’s say the Lions win that game. In the next round they face either the second seed from Region 5-AAAAA or the third seed from Region 8-AAAAA. I saw them live. I doubt that P-Ridge can beat the third seed from Region 8-AAAAA on any Friday night. I don’t see this team as the program Todd Holcomb has hyped them up to be.

Now, if P-Ridge finishes second, they can look forward to seeing McEachern in the 2nd Round. Forget about it. McEachern “Peachtree Ridges” the Lions and keeps it moving towards the Dome. Chatter about these guys from P-Ridge making a state championship run is borderline ridiculous. Either Todd Holcomb is connected to this program or there are higher ups in the AJC pushing this Kool-Aid on all of us. P-Ridge is lucky that Lowndes County did not hang 70+ on them. Randy McPherson obviously called off the dogs. There is no way, the Lions tackle well enough to stop an option type team.

Graysonfan: Yes, Grayson beat Camden County. As I have said repeatedly, Grayson deserves the top ranking and should garner more respect on this board. However, beating Camden County in the Georgia Dome means nothing in means of Region seeding. When Camden wins their region, they are going to be on equal footing as Grayson…believe it or not. There will be a coin toss. If Camden wins the toss and teams have to travel all the way down to Kingsland, GA, you can go ahead and give Camden County an extra 7-10 points.

I would hold off on the Camden County bashing. Seriously. It will be extremely challenging for any team to load onto a bus and travel to the southeast tip of the state and beat Camden County. Camden County is young. It can be done. However, you are asking a great deal from a high school player to beat Camden County down in Kingsland.

By the way, Peachtree Ridge would not make the state playoffs in Region 1-AAAAA, Region 8-AAAAA, and probably be a third or fourth seed out of Region 2-AAAAA.

It is propaganda for the AJC and Todd Holcomb to crown this team as a great team going into the season. At best, the team is solid.

Defense is the problem for Peachtree Ridge. They can not stop teams of equal or greater talent. They rarely gang tackle. Most of the plays on defense are one on one stops. The interior (on both sides) is not dominant. Would you disagree with that assessment, Quinn?

Decatur Where It Is Greater: Much of the Colquitt County Packer hype will subside after their game against Warner Robins on Friday night. Although the contengent of South Georgia posters have prepared to crown Colquitt County as the third seed from Region 1-AAAAA and believe that Valdosta sneaks in at 4-3, I want to caution you on buying into this ridiculous way of thinking.

Colquitt County completes their schedule with a run against the three Warner Robins high schools. They start by hosting Warner Robins in Moultrie. Watch what happens. The Packers will be fortunate to win one of their final three games. Warner Robins is going to VIOLATE Colquitt County!!! It will not even be close. Many people have written off Warner Robins. I do not buy it. Warner Robins will beat Colquitt County, easily. Northside and Lowndes County are going to be on “Upset Alert” agaisnt WR.

Warner Robins has faced a very competitive schedule. They run the ball practically every play. They are big, physical, and very experienced on both side of the ball. Bryan Way is a highly underrated coach in the region, who does have a State Championship (2004). The assumption is Warner Robins and Valdosta fight it out for fourth place. I expect Northside to win the region undefeated or with one loss (from Warner Robins). I expect Lowndes County to finish second with one or two region losses (the Vikings may get caught sleeping on Warner Robins). I expect Warner Robins, Colquitt County, and Valdosta to be in a three way tie for third with each team knocking off one of the other three and each sitting at 4-3. It will be a sticky tie-breaker situation. Truth be told, Warner Robins should be undefeated and 4-0 in region play. They had there feet on Valdosta’s neck and gave away a fumble for a touchdown in the closing minutes.

Warner Robins 28, Colquitt County 7

Before you roll your eyes, Warner Robins lost at Grayson 10-0 (an almost three hour road game). Grayson is not just better than Colquitt County. Grayson is MUCH better than Colquitt County.

ENR your bias towards region 1AAAAA blinds you so that you cant see a good team when you see one. Pridge would contend for your region because they can play with lowndes and northside. they would probably win 2AAAAA and compete with grayson for 8AAAAA. they come into the season ranked 7th nationally after one game you judge them. every team has played a bad game before. this doesnt make them a bad team. if a northside or lowndes team came up to atlanta and got beat badly its not like all the sudden they suck. their still a good team that is capable of winning against the best.

Patience Bulldawg. ENR will get his comeupense when his team travels to Suwanee in the quarterfinals and gets their tail handed to them. I’m sure NSWR is a good team, too bad they have such an obnoxious proponent.

I think Stephenson exposed MLK as merely a pretender. While MLK may have a decent team they were not able to score ANY points against a decent opponent. Dropped passes and uninspired play calling with continual dives into the strength of the Stephenson defense. Even if they have great players play-calling and coaching like that is not going to win them games against strong competitors. While the game showed us that MLK is not all that good, I am not sure that it proved Stephenson is all that strong either?

It is time to consider some recognition for Roswell or Lassiter or both for their unbeaten records so far. Between the two of them Lassieter broke a Georgia record with 545 yards of total passing on Friday night. That is exactly the sort of offense that might give fits to teams like Grayson, NSWR, and many of the others in the 5A Top 10 list. I am not sure we really know about Lassiter yet, but there is some potential to do real damage in the playoffs.

Newnan is hard to judge since they play such weak opponents. But they seem to produce quality teams year after year. I expect they will do well in the playoffs.

Camden continues to prove why they belong in the Top 10. They are one of the teams that could win it all. Playing tough competition early might just give them an edge to beat the tough competition in the playoffs.

It seems to me that 1AAAAA is relatively untested. One win against a decent non-conference opponent doesn’t prove diddly especially given that it was a home game after a 5 hour bus ride in front of a hostile crowd. I think everyone can admit the wheels came off for Peachtree Ridge after the long bus ride, and a couple of early scores. Will it happen to P Ridge again? Maybe. There is a good chance it will happen to any team that makes the long trip to South Georgia, but things might be completely different when it is the South Georgia team that gets on the bus.

In the 10 total 5A championships awarded in Georgia, 3 of them have gone to 1AAAAA teams. While 5 of them have gone to teams from Gwinnett or Cobb. I think we are just going to have to wait to see how this one plays out.

BTW, AJC it is extremely irritationg that I cannot post from a different PC. Is there anything the SWAT team can do to fix that? Thanks.

One thing I can agree on about the Stephenson-MLK game: sloppy play and penalties are a staple with these two teams. For a showcase of two of Dekalb’s best programs, it was what I predicted. Having grew up in Dekalb though I took a lot of pride in this game, and was proud to have witnessed it on TV. ESPN has got an affinity for HS in GA this year though, the Sanders TD was the second highlight Ive seen in as many weeks on ESPN. The Clarence Jackson pick-6 from the Griffin-NC game last week was also an ESPN top 10 highlight. Anyways, I had gotten the feeling over the past week the Union Grove posters were being sarcastic decatur where its greater, but all in good fun. They know they haven’t beat yall EVER, so you got to appreciate the respect tied in as well. Stephenson has a ton of talent, and the confidence is high after a big win over a region rival on a national stage. But as far a state title contender goes, I’ll just see it when I see it. You guys are going to have to do it on the field, not in the chat room. Ive seen some great Stephenson teams get knocked out the playoffs, and the team you have this year isn’t one of greats IMO. Also props to Eastside for the 48-0 win over Jackson Co. Looks like they should defend their region 8-AAA crown with tough part of their schedule behind them. Looks like they really pulled it together after we beat them: good job Eagles! Alcovy, great win over Ola, but yall got a dangerous game coming up this week with Mt. Zion-Jonesboro. To High School Football Fan: If Region 1AAAAA regular season ends with a three way, the tie breaker is points allowed in games with the three teams. In other words, if Lowndes, Northside and Colquitt ended the season tied, Lowndes has given up 16 points to those two teams (10 to NSWR and 6 to Colquitt) Lowndes put 31 on Colquitt. Colquitt and Northside have not played yet. Lowndes scored 7 on NSWR. But I don’t look for Colquitt to defeat NSWR, who should win 1st place in our region, with Lowndes 2nd, Colquitt 3rd, and Valdosta 4th.

Have not studied the play-off brackets, but as far as who has the best shot in AAAAA, I would have to still bet on Lowndes. Grayson is over-hyped. N. Gwinnett is impressive. Living on the Alabama side of the “Hooche” I catch lots of Alabama HS football as well. The win over Prattville still has Alabama HS fans feeling woozy. Camden County and Northside are still young. McKeachern has NEVER gotten the job done. P’Ridge? Come on. They are done. Then there is Newnan. Hands down the best defense in the state along with the state’s best player, Alec Ogletree. The Newnan offense still needs work, but if the 2 best teams in AAAAA played tomorrow it would be Newnan vs. Lowndes.

Speaking of Ocie Salter, everyone seems to have discovered the state’s most popular “little BIG man” in Ean Pemberton. But I am here to say that the state’s best “little BIG man” is LG’s Ocie Salter. At 5′5 162 lbs. he is simply an amazing RB. Catch his highlights @ http://www.lagrangefootball.com. He is #5. FINALLY up to full speed after the devasting hit by Ogletree in Game 1. to decatur- i stand by my comments regarding Stephenson’s lack of discipline. Stephenson has some of the best talent in the state but it all goes to waste every year when they fail to make it past the first or 2nd round of the playoffs. a weak kicking game and sloppy fumbles will get a team sent home in a hurry against the likes of a Lowndes, Northside, Colquitt, or Warner Robins. if Stephenson had better coaching, i think they could be in the title mix every year.

big j – Barry Sanders and Emmitt Smith did not have a legendary line and Neither has Tom Brady, but if you put the best 11 on the field and get your play makers the ball your chances are greater. That’s probably why other teams or writers are not taking us seriously because our coaching is suspect in all phases of the game. Speed and talent will out weigh the rough spots on the o-line. There are some bright spots on the line though we just have to get into their ears and give them a chance and not let coaching defeat us like it did last year in the 2 regular season and 1 playoff game we lost.

True Blue- what i said about Stephenson is not foolish talk…its obvious and im not the only one who mentioned Stephenson’s turnovers and mistakes…with better coaching, i think they could be in the state title mix every year but i doubt they will go that deep in the playoffs this year if they continue to play like they did against MLK.

Lowndes has also won 3 titles in the last 5 years and Grayson made it to the semifinals, a place unknown to Stephenson. im not “bashing” Stephenson. why are you so sensitive? i guess you ignore the fact that i mentioned Stephenson’s great talent.

Stephenson’s running back lost 3 fumbles. those are obvious mistakes in ball security. yes, other teams turn the ball over but i seriously doubt Lowndes, Grayson, North Gwinnett, Northside WR, or any other top AAAAA team go on national tv and turn it over like that.

like i said BEFORE and will say AGAIN, good luck to Stephenson the rest of the way.

Lowndes and Grayson have turnovers periodically but i cant name a game where Lowndes has lost 3 fumbles. Lowndes has won 3 of the past 5 state titles in AAAAA and Grayson made it to the semifinals, a place unknown to Stephenson.

i would think losing 3 fumbles are mistakes but thats just my opinion based on the facts of the Stephenson-MLK game. the punting and kicking were not as good as some of the top AAAAA teams either. teams that lack solid special teams usually give up field position and it comes back to haunt them against great teams. some of the Stephenson posters were saying that Stephenson would make it to the dome but i just dont see that unless they dramatically improve between now and the playoffs.

im not bashing them. im just giving my opinion. like i said BEFORE, good luck to Stephenson the rest of the way

Today we’re going through this blog, Poll Talk and the Free For All Forum and deleting posts that are personal in tone because things are ridiculous at the moment. If we see that you go behind us and continue posting these sorts of messages, like decatur tried to do or if you post something as disgusting as Punisher did, we’ll just shut down commenting. Yeah, I’m True Blue all the way. But, if Northside and Grayson haven’t played this year, isn’t the #1 ranking also someone’s opinion? I’m sure if you ask Lowndes who the best team in the state is, they will concur with my assessment. An opinionated, metro ATL-biased ranking doesn’t make you the best team in the state, victories do. Of which, we (NHS Eagles) have plenty. Remember…men lie, women lie, but numbers don’t. Come see us at home in Warner Robins at the MAC or at our adopted home field, the GA Dome. We will be there waiting, as usual, when the smoke clears. Oh, to all you WR Demon fans…Great year so far. From what I’ve seen and heard, you have another great team over there on the southside. As a matter of fact, we can let you borrow a few “W”s and still have a winning record for the last 10 years or so. The voice of reason must now speak! Stephenson has a very good team this year. Will they go to the dome ? Who knows, but its possible. Hell its possible for any top 10 team to go to the dome. Football is one of those games where you never know until its over. Every good team that won state had to do it for the first time and until they did they was probaly doubted by everyone. We speak so freely about winning state like its something easy to accomplish but it ain’t. Hell it takes some schools 30 years to do it. Give Stephenson a break; what they have done in the last ten seasons is phenonmenal. They may not have won state but they have had many winning seasons. They have my respect if nothing else.

the Wartown battle should be a good one and will have a serious playoff implications. Northside is a lock to make the playoffs but to win the region and take the #1 seed they have to win out, beating WR and Colquitt. im assuming Northside wins both games but i just hope the Packers play them close.

the team that i think will surprise some folks, especially South Georgia, is North Gwinnett. they are the real deal this year and have big play threat at QB. i could easily see them winning it all just as much as Lowndes, Northside, or Grayson…

Actually we’ve had plenty teams from the county in the dome. What does that have to do with anything, and if you can recall you guys had to come back from 4 touchdowns to get that win against Tucker that year. Why are we talking about AAAA anyway, Northside isn’t there anymore. Get to the dome in AAAAA, that why I made that comment. Heck I’m not even a Tucker fan but I would just say their coaches lost that game being up by so many and then lose. Great stories lately. I really like the story you did on the young player from West Forsyth, and today’s story was terrific. It’s a good point: No one gives seniors an opportunity to flourish. Region 1AAAAA three way tie breaker system counts points allowed among teams tied as the tie breaker. When two teams are tied, the head to head competition winner decides the tie breaker. Before we went to this foremat, we counted non region AAAAA wins as the tie breaker. But it is difficult for South Georgia teams to schedule non region AAAAA opponents, so we changed our tie breaker system several years ago. The regular season has 3 more games, and a lot can happen. No team in 1AAAAA is a lock to win 1st place, though NSWR is certainly in the cat bird seat. If NSWR stumbles to either Colquitt or Warner Robins lowndes could very easily be the region champs. I realize EagleNationRising said there is no way Lowndes can win first place in its region, but I just explained a way that it can. Lowndes gave up six to Colquitt, 10 to NSWR, and has WR at home in the last reg. season game.

B.Eagle, my mistake, I understood wins against all aaaaa teams in the state to be the tie breaker, then the points allowed on defence….Of course Colquitt, Lowndes and NSWR have to win out for each team to only have 0ne loss. Right now I see Lowndes and Northside as the favorites and Grayson because they play a slow down frustrating offense style with a good defense.I think Camden is too young tocompete against the top teams.Mlk and Stephenson could get in the mix if the coaches will listen to people in the program besides themselve. These two teams have the talent to beat any one. South west Dekalb should be hard to beat this year with the big back and tough defense. The cold weather will also play a factor in the playoffs, it really does affect a lot of high school football players.

But in the same post you apparently are putting Grayson down, saying they’ve only been around awhile. Well, I see a few things you might be just a little wrong about. First of all, how many championships have NG and Newnan won? Second, Grayson was in the title game last year and are undefeated this year. And polls are about current teams, not what someone has done in the distant past, as in 1995-96.

I know you are proud of your win last week, and you should be. But face it, Stephenson could not stay on the field with Grayson, Northside, or Camden. Sometimes we all have to be realists and accept reality. But I do hope your team has continued success, and does well in the playoffs.

Many knock Newnan down due to SOS but try to come that Cuga Cage called Drake Stadium on a Friday night during the playoffs, and eliminate Newnan. It’s nearly impossible. I know. Im a freshman and i play there on Thursday Nights and its loud, imagine how loud it gets on a Friday. Ill give u hint it sounds like a Falcons game at the Dome. and its outside. But thats beside the point. sure we get weak schedlues but, we always show in the playoffs. our only losses in recent playoff history were North Gwinnett in 07′ but that was due to GHSA not allowing a playoff game in the Cuga Cage due to seating, which has been fixed, and Camden in 08′ whn All-State QB Russell Powell was trying to play basketball and football simutanelously, which didnt work because his numbers dropped dramatically after basketball started and some even say he threw the Camden game to better his chance of a D-1 basketball scholarship. so this year with the “Tree” twins leading both defense and offense and a new confident QB, Newnan is a big favorite for the Dome.

Look at the past in the state playoffs
Grayson would lose to Peachtree Ridge
Peachtree Ridge would lose to North Gwinnett
North Gwinnett would lose to Camden
Camden would lose to Lowndes
Lowndes would lose to Grayson.. Like last year!

And all the others NRW Stephenson, etc. could and would lose to all of these teams, they’d put up a fight but there all in a different class

Lowndes may have the most talent but not the best team.

Top 10
1. Grayson
2. Lowndes
3. North Gwinnett
4. Peachtree Ridge
5. Camden
6. Northside WR

If you were really paying attention to my posts all season you would see I’ve talked about where and who I represent. Columbia HS in Decatur is where I work and graduated from. We’re a basketball powerhouse so I didn’t think that applies to this blog. What does that have to do with my disagreement with Northside fans about the dome being your second home. Even though my school’s 1-6, they’ve been dealing with things here you would not ever have to worry about in WR. Houston county would not tear up the school’s practice fields the summer before the season starts and don’t have it completed by the time schools starts. Northside would never have to go from place to place trying to find somewhere to practice prior to and during the season. I’ll always give my opinion on this bolg because I’ve been watching high school football since the late 80’s. It might not seem like that long but I’m just in my early 30’s so you do the math. I’ll say it again the Georgia Dome isn’t your second home and the move back down to AAAA should make you happy because you won’t win the state in AAAAA.

Ridge needs to start hitting harder all around… on the O and the D! O-line has some big guys, but I keep wanting to ask them what they’re so afraid of? Wouldn’t want to meet them in a dark alley or nothing after saying so, but they gotta stop hesitating. D needs to step it up too. Saw some of the game Fri but when I saw the final score I was shocked. Should’ve been a shut out the way CH was playing. I know one of the officials from Fri – he thinks Ridge’s very overrated. He just may be right.
