SGH– My question was why would he[Coach Con] play his injury hand…ie.. give the media all injury details prior to the playoffs?. You also stated a particular player was in a state of injury [based on a newspaper atricle] that you do not have first hand knowledge of. Grayson has a downhill road to the playoffs no matter how you slice it. It can be beneficial as tune-ups and reps for backup players and time for healing starters…3 weeks is a long time in that mode, hence, why give the media or anybody else ANY SIGNIFICANT INFO when you have that luxury. Many players play in a brace. My oldest son played 4 yrs HS in a brace and just graduated from college with 4 yrs as an O’lineman in a brace..It had nothing to do with the coach. Those decisions are made between the player, doctors and the parents..A coach bears little significance in decisions regarding you son’s ultimate future. The same currently applies to my son who is a senior starter in HS football. And trust me , Coach Conn would NEVER force that issue. I have first hand knowledge.

Friday night game of the week—- what about Griffin’s fumble on the one yard line that was caused by ground contact. If you don’t believe me, look at the picture on this web site. That would have tied the ball game early in the 1st and GHS would have been ahead at the half. The block in the back was on a play where the player picked up a first down not a touchdown and considering the numbers North Clayton’s offense put up all night, I feel pretty confident Griffin’s defense would have kept them out of the endzone. Regardless, take away the safety and give north Clayton an extra touchdown and Griffin still wins by 3 so I don’t think the official made the impact. Maybe you should watch again and then look at the stats before you make anymore observations.

I usually try to stay clear of these blogs but reading these postings have just drawn me in…I really just want to comment to all the people who are bashing the Dekalb County Schools and their playoff down falls…I really just have one question…Lowndes County, Parkview, and Camden are the only schools that can really talk by your rationale..Basically they are the schools that have won state championships in 5A..with the exception of a draw between Peachtree Ridge and Roswell..come on who ends a state championship in a draw…I have to give props to 1AAAAA they really hold it down in the championship department…since 1999 6 championships have come from South Georgia..3 from Parkview and the uhhh…draw..People bash Stephenson, South West Dekalb, and MLK talkin about the coaching..and that size has nothing to do with winning…well let me reprase that…size doesnt have alot to do with winning..Lets look at Lowndes County…population over 3000, Camden population over 2700, Parkview yeah another 2700…please the largest school in dekalb is MLK with at max 2100…kids…yeah and we do have at least 7 high school with a 15 mile radius…this is definalty not the kids fault but it does however make a diffrence….if you think other wise lets look at this…MLK, SWD, and Stepenson, could all be one school…wow talk about state contenders..yeah I heard you ENR new school down the street from Northside…well that still leaves 5 High School in Houston County…well we in Dekalb have 22 high school in the district….So please stop the complaining and to all the Gwinnett Schools..please be quiet…with the exception of Parkview…there is not alot of Championships out there…Come on Grayson who is fairly new but lets look at the record..since 2000 Grayson is a combined 70-32 since being built…while MLK is 70-21 since 2002…same amount of wins less years…no championships but hey we always play region 1 first round….where u at Gwinnett..Stephenson in same time frame yeah 83-21..so if any person from gwinnett wanna talk put us on your scheule…No disrespect to any of your programs but the bashing must stop…Oh yeah let me point out the bad with the good..two early exits from the playoffs…but last I checked only one state champion..unless you end in a draw…(wow) congrats to Camden..so weather you left early or late you left…..i know i am gonna draw alot of flak from this comment but had to release it…

Grayson lost another key player in the 22-12 win over Brookwood as star defensive end Joseph Champaign tore the ACL in his knee. He joins starting tight end Nick Benzor, who also tore his ACL the previous week against Shiloh.

“They’re going to rehab (Champaign’s knee), put a brace on it and then they’re trying to have him back by the playoffs,” said Conn, who said Benzor may return with a knee brace for the Nov. 6 game with Central Gwinnett.

You are wasting your time and energy as THATS ALL most of the SOUTH GA posters want to tell you about…It seems to irritate them that new schools have opened and are having successful programs in a short period of time…to them if you didn’t do it in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s then you can’t win NOW!!!

The facts are that as new schools open and students are moved from one district to another & from one school region to another it is going to create NEW school powerhouse teams in areas that didn’t have them before…

You only have to look at Gwinnett and see how the power has shifted from Parkview and Bookwood (sorry Brookwood Mom) to Grayson and others…

It just happens faster in North Ga as more new schools are opened here within a smaller geographical area…

KMHS – Best record 6-4 from players from an undefeated 7th, 8th and 9th grade team.

How do 7th 8th & 9th grade football winners (Some undefeated) suddenly go to sub-par teams as KMHS Varsity and JV?…..hmmm…..coaching!

Arrrggghhhh, When will Kennesaw Mountain get a new football coach????? They have a fund raiser instead of a football coach. 100+ kids on a team just to get booster money. 30 kids practice, and the rest have to stand/sit outside the field and watch. JV practice is the last 5 minutes of varsity practice.

Thank God, Allatoona saw the light and did not hire you!

This is the week EAST plays Harrison at “THE BONEYARD”…BUT both East and Harrison have had MANY issues this year so far…

Harrison with a loss to EAST this week has a TOUGH schedule left with McEachern, Marietta & Etowah left to play…They may not win another game this year!!!

and EAST needs to beat Harrison this week, then has Kennesaw Mtn. & Cherokee before finishing up with a HUGE game AT Woodstock!!!

I saw that game friday on CSS between Griffin and North Clayton and I must say that the game was decided by three questionable calls by the officials. #1 was a blocking in the back call against North Clayton in the 1st half that would have made the score 14 – 0 North Clayton going into halftime. The replay didn’t show any block in the back. #2 was the punt that Griffin downed on the 1 yard line even though their player had both feet over the line. That meant that North Clayton should have started at the 20 yard line instead of the 1 yard line. That was a crucial call because… and this is #3, the 2-point safety Griffin received because North Clayton was called for holding in the end zone which made the score 19-14 Griffin with around 6 minutes left to go in the 4th quarter. Ironically, all of the questionable calls went Griffin’s way even though North Clayton was at home. Even the sports announcers questioned some of those calls. From my observation both teams were evenly matched and well coached. Its just not right because the OFFICIAL AND NOT THE PLAYERS decided the outcome of that game.

Our AJC staff writer, Michael Carvell, is also NOT RANKING THE TEAMS but for the record, Carvell said it’s cool if y’all chat him up about rankings because he likes hearing from you. slalom1 and yo – It’s cool if you keep it to football but if anyone wants to hear about politics or how who voted in what election, we have a whole Opinion section for that and plenty of other blogs in that vein. I doubt Jay Bookman or Kyle Wingfield or Bob Barr or Jim Galloway would like us going into their blogs and fussing about why Stephenson gets no respect or how come Grayson is/isn’t overrated and why. Although Galloway did post that one blog about how the Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe cheerleaders were told to stop writing Bible verses on the football team’s Friday night run-through banners. But still — school enrollment talk on here is OK; speculating about whether one team / district (ahem) “recruits” is OK; sharing with us how you voted and why? Not OK. Stick to football, please. Slalom what up with all of the enrollment talk. I didn’t say any thing about enrollment in that (I knew I would get your ire) lagrane post of 2004. I simply stated the names of teams that were probably better that year than LaGrange. You did notice little itty bitty Charlton in that post didn’t you?

Seems you prove my point. All the prognosticaters and national polls you mention didn’t do Lowndes a lot of good against Northside a few weeks ago. Those dummies generally look at so called blue chip talent and they fail to look at team and heart. If those folks knew what they were talking about then Lowndes would have lost to Griffin in 1980. We would have lost to Northside in the Dome in 1999. We would have lost to Parkview and (the monstrous and unbeaten) Brookwood in 2004 and 2005. We would definitely not have won a state championship in 2007 and we would have beaten Grayson in 2008. Not to mention we would still be undefeated this year.

To all of the know so much experts in the press I say…hmmmmm…say what?

I should probably just shut up, but in the words of The 4 Tops, “Can’t Help Myself”. I have NEVER said that “enrollment does not matter”. It does. What I have said is that enrollment is just one factor that plays a role in success or failure. (Probably ranks about 4th on the list of “what it takes to win GHS football games”. I will use my beloved Grangers as an example. Enrollment : slightly less than 1400. Lost to Newnan in 2008 and 2009. Newnan has an enrollment advantage of about 25% over LaGrange. But that IS NOT why the Grangers lost both games. It was game preparation. i.e conditioning, execution and coaching in all aspects of the game.Talent wise and roster size was about even in both years. Newnan simply whipped a good Granger team for those reasons. Go back to 2004. Newnan enjoyed the same enrollment advantage. The Grangers won 35-7 for all of the same reasons. Granted there are years when one team may have more talent than another regardless of enrollment. And YO, my last post should have read, “Can you blame fans across the state who celebrate when the “bully” gets whipped”?
As for 2009, should the Cougars make it deep into the AAAAA play-offs, they will most likely have to overcome an “enrollment disadvantage” along the way. However, the enrollment advantage that Camden County enjoyed over Newnan in 2008 is not why the Cougars lost. They just played a bad first half. There is more “enrollment disparity” in AAAAA than in any other classification in the state. I believe that this is the year of the COUGARS. Should they go the distance, it will NOT be due to an enrollment advantage. To the contrary it will be the result of great coaching, great player developement and fabulous community support.

YO is ALWAYS right.LOL. YO, don’t know if you are aware of it or not, but Lowndes and LaGrange shared one common opponent in 2004-Kendrick. Kendrick head coach, Ahmad Tinker stated: “We have played Lowndes and Valdosta this year(2004). I have also seen Camden County. The Grangers are hands down the best team in Georgia”. Of course that is just one head coach’s opinion. Never mind Daryl Maxie of the AJC declaring that “at season’s end if there was to be a play-off between the state’s best, The Grangers would most likely be my pick to win it all”. Never mind that virtually EVERY national, state and local poll had the 2004 Grangers ranked higher than Lowndes. Of course, we will never know. But don’t you get tired of powerful Lowndes beating up on MUCH smaller schools week end and week out? Poor little Northside with an enrollment of about 1880 should have had ZERO chance against powerful Lowndes with an enrollment of 2,740. By your line of reasoning neither should ANY smaller school have a “chance” against a much larger school. Final question: If enrollment is such a deciding factor, what pleasure can any fan get from beating up on smaller schools? Secondly, here is an idea that should put things in perspective. Suppose Lowndes is playing against a school with an enrollment of say 2,000.(About average size for most teams in 1AAAAA except for Lowndes @ 2,740). That is a 27% advantage in favor of Lowndes. When Lowndes plays these smaller schools, in the name of “fair play”, remove 27% of all seniors, juniors and sophs just to be fair. Obviously Northside did not need the “neutralizing” factor and still whipped the Giant. Your prejudice toward smaller schools is becoming a bit tiring.(Even when Lowndes is about to become a #2 seed to the smallest school in a region where their enrollment is superior to all other schools in 1AAAAA.) Is it really that much fun to be a “bully” and can you blame fans across the state when the “bully” gets whipped by the “little guy”?

I see it’s back to bashing Camden again this week, AJC do Camden a favor and drop them from the top 10 maybe then some off the people on here will find some other team to complain about. Hornestly until watching them play this past weekend I didn’t think they were a top 10 team. Yeah they beat Groves 76-0, but most of it was done by back up players getting valuable playing time that will only help come playoff time like it did last year when they went 15-0. For those who want Camden to join region 1, it will never happen (Sgt Chris). You must have some serious dislike for Camden, but it’s okay.lol Why it want happen, well I did a little research and the closest reg. 1 school is Coffee Co. which is 99 miles and the farthest is NSWR and WR 252 miles one way. As many others has pointed out to you football isn’t the only sport played. Basketball have very strict rules concerning starting time during the school week. Varsity games must start at 6 pm during the school week and as a official who have traveled to some of these long away games it’s not fun ending a game close to 10 pm then travel 3 hours by get a few hours of sleep and get ready for work the next day. So with that being said, let’s enjoy the remaining few weeks left in football and then let the playoffs determine who is best.

I was at the Griffin-North Clayton game and it lived up to the hype for the most part. Griffin High is FOR REAL. They will be a force to deal with come playoff time. The offense is creative the defense is solid. Region 6 will be ready and waiting for you come playoff time.

ENR….Please try to attand a Harrison game and watch our head coach on the sidelines. I have never seen a High School football coach, act so hostile and treat his players with such indignation. To constantly berate your own players in front of his peers is not beneficial to anyone. You have to motivate with encouagement to get a teenager to put forth an effort. Harrison lost alot of starters from last year, and are having a “rebuilding” year. Regeion 5AAAAA is not an easy schedule. Never count out Harrison, McEachern, Woodstock, Etowah, or East Paulding, in any given week. You can’t win them all. but the afore mentioned teams have won quite a few!!

In responce to “The Punisher” Lowndes High played it’s starters and their backups for only three quarters against Valdosta, turn sent in the BTeam. (Valdosta continued playing its starters the entire game.) A team simply has to play its starters at least that much to get the players into game condition, so when they play good teams they don’t get fitigued too soon. We even played the freshman team against Peachtree Ridge, Tift, and in another couple of games. I think the fact that Camden and Lowndes and Northside being good year after year proves they play the reserves enough to keep their winning programs going. If scores sometimes get out of hand because of another team’s ineptness, that’s too bad.

I saw the LaGrange team in the dome….they were good but your are only punishing your self with the thinking they were any more than a very good AAA team. Punisher, but you have 3 schools so it is what it is.
Take away the gazillion schools in Gwinnett and no one beats Gwinnett.
Besides ask your favorite Lagrange supporter Slalom and he will tell you numbers in a school don’t matter. That seems to be the thinking in that area of the state any how, at least when it is convenient for you to think that way.

ps-I am not saying Lagrange 2004 could not have beaten any team in the state on any give night but they were not the best football team in the state in 2004. Period. Probably no better than 4th or 5th best in the state. Better teams all in AAAAA that year would have been Parkview, Camden, Lowndes and very possibly Warner Robins. For that matter maybe even Charlton Cty.

Out of the hundreds of teams that play football (GHSA and GISA), only one team from each classificaton will hold their fingers up to claim the title as being number one. Good post, Viking Forever. I just wish EagleNationRisingRunnethOverAtTheMouth would admit he was wrong when he said “LOWNDES COUNTY WILL NOT PEACHTREERIDGE VALDOSTA”. The 57 points Lowndes scored was the most ever scored on a Valdosta team by any team, and the win was the 1st time in history anybody has beaten Valdosta 6 times in a row. The game was live on Armed Forces radio network world wide, and on CBS nationwide TV. SOMEBODY, if not Mr. EaglaNationRisingRunnethOverAt TheMouth himself, thinks Lowndes is important and pretty doggone good.

Moving on….. Way to go Woodstock and East Paulding!

Congrats to the gutty performance from North Clayton last night. Also to Drew High School – what a great facility you have there. It is GREAT and set up fantastic. When they fix the “traffic egress” it will be even better. EXCEPTIONAL performance from both teams, and Griffin did have to dig deep to get the win. Our starting center was out with strep and some bad snaps early on caused some timing issues, but was corrected at half-time. I hope this game converts a few naysayers about our team this year.

VALDOSTA FANS, The big loss this weekend must be a hard pill to swallow. But give Tomberlin some time. Say 2 years for marked improvement. Having grown up during the era when Valdosta was king year end and year out, it is even hard for me,(who is not from Valdosta) to envision a routing from their cross county school who for years was a “gimmee” in Region 1AAAAA. LOL. I thought your wrap-up of the game was pretty much on the money. Troup is capable of being dangerous. Carver seems to find ways to keep their opponent in the game with penalties, poor special teams play and turnovers. I still believe that Carver has the most talented roster in the state. But to win it all this season, they are gonna have to correct some major mistakes. What do you think about the coaching change at Shaw?

NTH TROJANS, I watched the game on TV. Wish I could have been there, Maybe that was Gainsville at their worst. The QB and Tailor Jones(sp?) were both fabulous. So was the Gainesville defense.
Whether or not it was a bad game for Gainesville, they look mighty scary. By the way congrats to Hiram and to North Hall.

EagleNationRising, Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Northside pulled off a win against Warner Robins in the final game of 1989 regular season when the Demons were undefeated and ranked #1 Nationally. The Grangers beat the Demons the following week 16-10. is that right?
