RealityBites...

Obviously we were because the McEachern game was back and forth ALL night and EAST was in the game with an opportunity to win it with just over 4 minutes left...

BUT that really has nothing to do with anything at this point as the EAST team that showed up at McEachern and the EAST team that showed up friday night against Etowah were TWO complete different teams...

At the McEachern game the team played ALL NIGHT like it wanted to win and make a statement but at the Etowah game it was as if they thought they could just show up and win...

BUT...it is mid week and we are trying to get over it and look to this weeks match with North Cobb at "THE BONEYARD"...

Sanityrules i know where your coming from, but the tigers are having a rebound season that i think deserves a little publicity, it takes heart to win a double OT game and the next week win on the last play of the season, and we do not need the coverage from AJC as now the play is going to be on Sportscenter later this week. But this is a big season for the tigers after 2 years ago finishing the regular season 10-0, and last season finishing 1-9. They have a team that with all their talent can suprise a couple people and make a deep run into the postseason. Trust me I give Newnan all the respect in the world, one of Fayette's coach's from last year is now a def. coordinator for NHS, his name is Coach Ramsey by the way. I in fact have been to a couple Newnan games this year and last year, and I like yall's team, but i do think that Fayette deserves a little something for their past two weeks of play which is why im glad it will be on Sportscenter

Stephenson does have a big, fast physical defense. I dont think there is anyone on the starting defense less than 6"0. You definitely won't beat them running strongside. The strongside Linebacker #3 Jabari
Johnson is probaly the most underrated SLB in the state. Rivals has him as a 3star but this guy is a 5* backer. The Defensive Ends is also very good.

CannonRules -

How do you figure that you all beat yourselves against McEachern. Are you basing that on the fumble you had late, after the Indian fumble that gave you the ball back anyway. Or is it the way that McEachern shoved the ball down your throats and scored to seal the deal. Or how about the two missed FG's that the Indians had, or the TD that was called back. Wait, I got it. You must be basing on the fact that McEachern LIT UP your defense for nearly 600 yards. Guess we were watching different games.....

slalom almost nailed the Columbus situation. when Flowers was getting all Carver's kids AND the Shaw kids, Shaw was the top dog.Flowers went to Albany, Dell McGee came to Carver and now has ALL the Carver kids Plus the Shaw kids. I was at Shaw last Thurs. night. they are a mockery of their former power and lost to an upstart Northside baseball school. Too many high schools, too little talent and the gangs won't let their members play.

Joe...

I think I said the SAME thing as you did...that THIS years's EAST team is not as good as teams from the past few years. Did North Paulding pull some kids from EAST...SURE it did...but that is going to happen when ANY new school opens!!!

The QB issue is different and it is REAL...you again are saying basically the same thing I did...YES #2 is a decent RUNNER and he can take the snap and HAND OFF/ i.e. he can run the Wing T BUT if the play doesn't develop or if he thinks he can "make something happen" thats when he gets "happy feet" and THATS WHEN EAST has had it's problems. #2 is a "BALL HOG" and CANNOT PASS at all! Mixing plays with a two QB type offense may be the fix for this year it has been done in past years VERY successfully!

Our "JV QB" as you call him CAN PASS and has proved he can but is not being given enough chances to gel with the receivers. Bottom line is that if something isn't working, you change it and right now with EAST SOMETHING ISN'T WORKING!!!!

Ok enough about the size of a school and the number of students they have, there been interesting points made about this on both sides. No matter what you situation you do need good coaches that can instill pride and sacrifice for the common good in your players. ENR you come off kind of obnoxious but I tell you one thing, that Northside team is a well coached team that plays with pride and all out effort and they win because of this.

Joe- the EP crowd is proving their status as King of the Frontrunners. Most of them are nowhere to be found on any vents and the one poster who does show up changes his name to "raidersarelosers." Not only that, but if you go to their website, you won't find any pictures or video of their game against us. NONE. They usually put it up the day after when they win. I think Woodstock will destroy them, just like mceachern actually did. I know that game looked close but the truth is the Indians always kept them at a distance and put up 600 yards of offense on them.

I'm not surprised we beat EP like we did and would love another shot at mceachern. Not saying we would beat them but it wouldn't be the 31 point beat-down we saw.

Hey Cannon Rules:

That kid is playing QB because you don't have anyone else. The backup is a JV QB at best. You have stud running backs so your running a Wing T this year and #2 is very good at running the Wing T, its a great offense for the weapons you have. You only have one WR worth a crap so its not like you guys should be throwing much. #2 has kept you guys a float in the games I have seen with his running ability. His plays were about all you had against Marietta, he kept you in the McEachern game with his long 3rd down conversion runs along with the punt returns from #28. Face it you guys just aren't that good this year. You have a few solid players in #28,#6,#2,#20, and #24 but other then that you are just an average football team that is about to get hit hard by this Senior class leaving. Your playmakers will all be gone and I expect EP to go down after this class leaves, Welcome North Paulding into the football world, they got EP's athletes.

Face it you guys just aren’t that good this year. You have a few solid players in #28,#6,#2,#20, and #24 but other then that you are just an average football team that is about to get hit hard by this Senior class leaving. Your playmakers will all be gone and I expect EP to go down after this class leaves, Welcome North Paulding into the football world, they got EP’s athletes.

It is important to note that just because the school has a lot of money doesnt necessarily mean they will be good at football. i.e. the region 6. they tend to be more of baseball schools and if thats what they want to put their money in then all the power to them. but the teams that dedicate dollars to their programs are the most successful.

As far as i know the teams in metro atlanta that are consistently good all have money. this is the key because in atlanta people are constantly moving for new jobs and with them their money and support for their team. Walton is consistantly good every year. and a lot of new money is moving up to the North Gwinnett and Ptree ridge area and grayson is getting bigger. In ten years these teams will be like parkview and Brookwood with the talent slowly draining out of them but new schools will take their place. thats how i see it.

ENR: What I am saying is this: If size mattered, then Mill Creek & Berkmar would be powerhouses. I live in Gwinnett, so I am not in a vaccum. To say Warner Robins or Valdosta would add 3 high schools right now is absurd. Even in Gwinnett, they don't add 3 high schools in 1 year. My explanation is that NSWR & WR have tremendous fan support & big booster clubs. I know when you drop a class it gives you a big advantage. Wesleyan was an average program in AA, but a state champion in A. I NEVER said that smaller programs did not get support. I will repeat myself: If size REALLY mattered, MILL CREEK & BROOKWOOD would dominate the state. They are the 2 largest high schools in the state. That is what I meant.

It looks like tough games with N Cobb and Harrison for the team that showed up Friday. Thought we looked good beating Rome but they turned out to be having a down year themselves. I know we looked much better at McE but that didn't translate to Etowah. So now it looks like we haven't beaten anyone that's any good and may not. I was looking for a three TD win over Harrison but I now think that will be a very tough game. Congratulations Etowah for a great game. With losses to McE and Woodstock it would have been easy to slack off, but you played tough every down.

Sanity Rules, I believe you have connected all the dots when it comes to Muscogee County sports. During the Charles Flowers era Shaw had the the best athletes in the county. Coach Flowers left. Dell McGee took over at Carver,(which as you pointed out was terrible most every year). Coach McGee is a charismatic head coach as was Charles Flowers. But with Coach Flowers gone, so have the players.....to Carver.
Just look at the numbers: Shaw is 0-6. Started out 2008 0-5. What is wrong with this picture? And by the way, has anyone seen Coach Flowers tearing it up down in Albany like he did in Columbus? (Dougherty)

Eagle Nation Rising, I believe you have Shaw and Columbus high confused when it comes to baseball, but fundamentally you are right. Columbus gets the Lion's share of the best baseball players in Muscogee County. I believe 9 state titles in the past 20 years or so with most of them being in the state's top classification.

Cannon - I can empathize with you... as most of the Etowah faithful felt the same way after our loss to McEachern (a resounding defeat). I suspect that EP will rebound and learn. I can assure you that the Etowah team that showed up last Friday was a different than the team that showed up against McEachern. I very much like the Etowah team that showed up against EP. I hope this Etowah team is here to stay.

ENR & SouthGARules - All good points, but I think all aspects have to come together: size, coaching, community support, tradition, AND stability/consistency within the school district.

Size does matter... exactly how much it matters is certainly arguable. There is a significant talent pool difference in 3000 kids and 2000 kids when you play only 11 players on each side of the ball.

The additional factor is the dynamic nature of redistricting... because even if you maintain the size, you lose consistency (i.e. feeder programs) and disrupt community support. How do you effectively switch allegiance overnight? It is not easy and will have an more of an impact on the school that has lost part of the community support to a new school in the long run. You can build a tradition in a short period of time (see P'Ridge and Grayson) as "successful" programs because you had size, coaching, and a growing community support. We have seen a dropoff with Brookwood & Parkview in comparison in recent years which I think is due to some of the redistricting... and its after effects.

SouthGARules: Did you really just write the following, "the size of the school is not a major factor in success," in a discussion about how redistricting affects a program? Seriously??? How do you explain Northside-Warner Robins reaching the State Championship game 3 times in 4 seasons as one of the largest AAAA programs? How do you explain Warner Robins winning the State Championship in its first year as a AAAA school immediately after pushing out a coach how failed to reach the playoffs for the first time in decades there?

Perhaps, you live in some sort of a vaccuum or something. It is simply a numbers game. If Warner Robins, GA built three new high schools, it would obviously spread the talent around and negatively affect every program's ability to compete. If there were three high schools of equal size in Valdosta, it would negavtively affect those program's ability to compete. What many Atlanta posters are saying is this happens to their schools. I am simply saying that it does happen in Atlanta, but the schools still have LARGE student bodies.

When metro Atlanta posters complain about redistricting, they are not simply seeing a mirage. They know that their programs have lost talented players and staff due to changes. Since Atlanta is one of the fastest growing (by real population) metropolitan areas on earth, new schools are constantly popping up.

My point is that most of those metro Atlanta schools have a student body that is large enough to compete. STEPHENSON HS definitely is large enough to compete and have some of the best athletes in the state...BY FAR! It is an excuse to say that Northside-Warner Robins has just under 2000 students, therefore we can not compete with Peachtree Ridge or Lowndes County because they have so many more students. At some point, you have to realize that you are only going to play 30-35 kids, at max.

To say that the size of the school doesn't matter is a little short-sighted. Buford supports their team as much as Northside-Warner Robins, Lowndes County, Valdosta, or Parkview. Central-Carrollton supports their teams as much as Warner Robins, Marist, & Grayson. Go to Lincoln or Clinch Counties and tell me that their communities do not support them. Although Buford posters proudly proclaim that their teams would compete against larger programs, most of us know that is crazy. It is not because they lack very strong community support or that they lack coaching. They lack size. It is that simple.

The argument the new schools in metro Atlanta force Atlanta programs into a disadvantage does not fly because they still maintain size. They maintain a student body large enough to identify 50-60 good kids and athletes annually. SouthGARules, you can easily draw a coorelation to the student body of Valdosta and their trend of being a middle of the pack program in the past decade. Now, Valdosta is one of the smaller AAAAA schools. That was not always the case. Are you proclaiming that Valdosta does not have community support? I do not live there. However, I do not buy that Valdosta lacks fan support. They lack size. This season Valdosta would probably run the table in AAAA.

LeeChampion: My apologies. There was a time that Shaw was one of the state's top baseball programs. I have NEVER lived in Columbus. However, I have heard that there is widespread recruiting there. Perhaps, everyone is ONLY talking about Carver-Columbus. However, I heard that is it way out of control, in means, of Columbus and girls basketball. Honestly, I could care less about what happens in sports at Columbus area high schools. I know that Carver-Columbus is really talented. I did not stop to think about how they got good. I just know that have a very, very, very high level of talent. Any college coach in the nation can confirm that.

This one took a bit to get over...This one HURT!!!...This one was embarassing!!!...This was NOT A LOSS, it was a WHIPPING!!!

FIRST and FOREMOST!!!...

CONGRATULATIONS to ETOWAH's EAGLES for a COMPLETE win over our RAIDERS!!

Etowah dominated from the start, even though the score stayed close until the middle of the 2nd quarter, it SHOULD NOT HAVE!!! Etowah should have scored several times and EP was LUCKY to even still be in the game at half time!!!

This game was a HUGE step backward for EAST and many fans and parents in the stands around where we were sitting were voicing their displeasure. The play calling was horrible, they ran plays all night long that didn't work from the start and it was obvious Etowah could stop them. We again let our "starting???" quarterback "BALL HOG" the entire first half, this kid gets "happy feet" and refuses to pass until its too late and then he tries to run and gets dropped for losses time after time!!! This is a kid with good running skills and would be fine as a "wildcat" style player but SHOULD NOT BE the starting Quarterback...He is in WAY over his head!!!!

Our defense was RUN OVER all night and let Etowah convert 3rd downs into long runs of 15+ yards all night. I am sure this post is going to upset some of the other EP posters, but I am (as everyone knows) as strong an EP supporter and as vocal as anyone on here, but when you see a game played with as little heart as EP showed friday night they need to be called out for it. They came unprepared (Coach's fault?)and players were just standing around on the sidelines talking to each other not looking like they wanted to win this one.

I agree with some of the other EAST posters that the RAIDERS are not as good this year as previous years but they should not be getting BLOWN OUT like they did friday night. Against McEachern EAST beat itself but friday night a MUCH BETTER Etowah team showed up...they deserved this win and agina I say CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

We'll still be here the rest of the year...one loss does not destroy a season or what has been built over the last few years BUT the coaching staff really has to grab itself by the "boot straps" and get this years team refocused, there is still 5 games left to play!!!

The play calling was horrible, they ran plays all night long that didn’t work from the start and it was obvious Etowah could stop them. We again let our “starting???” quarterback “BALL HOG” the entire first half, this kid gets “happy feet” and refuses to pass until its too late and then he tries to run and gets dropped for losses time after time!!! This is a kid with good running skills and would be fine as a “wildcat” style player but SHOULD NOT BE the starting Quarterback…He is in WAY over his head!!!!

They came unprepared (Coach’s fault?)and players were just standing around on the sidelines talking to each other not looking like they wanted to win this one.

I agree with some of the other EAST posters that the RAIDERS are not as good this year as previous years but they should not be getting BLOWN OUT like they did friday night. Against McEachern EAST beat itself but friday night a MUCH BETTER Etowah team showed up…they deserved this win and agina I say CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

We’ll still be here the rest of the year…one loss does not destroy a season or what has been built over the last few years BUT the coaching staff really has to grab itself by the “boot straps” and get this years team refocused, there is still 5 games left to play!!!

They almost remind me of that Stephenson team that lost in the Dome to Camden County in...I think 05. I am not sure but that Stephenson team had players like Marcus Ball (Florida State), Jermaine Cunningham(University of Florida), Perry Riley (LSU), and Kelvin Sheppard(LSU).....They are extremely big and very fast. Playoff time will be interesting this year....

I must say I have to agree with some of the bloggers about the Dekalb County schools having a lack of championships. I took it upon myself to go and see the Stephenson Jaguars play last week after hearing about the over time win at Newton. I must say I think they will be a force to pay attention too in the playoffs. They look really strong. They put up 41 first half points on a Luella team that is not that good but 41 in half is alot of points no matter who you are playing.

ENR: There are 29 high schools in AAAAA that have enrollments of less than 2000 students. Among these are Northside WR, Valdosta, East Paulding & Stephenson. There are 7 HS with over 3000 students, all in Gwinnett. Among these are Mill Creek, Berkmar, Peachtree Ridge & Grayson. To say that MLK & Stephenson are 2 of the largest HS in Ga would be erroneous. Size of the HS is not a major factor in success, coaching, community support & tradition weigh more than size.

Camden Co.'s enrollment is not going up because there are no new subs coming to Kings Bay or for that matter any new employers for our county. The only people coming to Camden are retirees who have no new students for our schools. I don't forsee any need for a second school in the near future unless something changes in the way of job opportunities.

Fayco Tiger Fan, if Newnan loses, we won't lose respect, we'll work harder to get where we need to be. You would be surprised at what I know. For example who was the team that beat Morrow the year they won the 1987 championship? You probably didn't know that. McIntosh may have 5 d-1 recruits on this team. Did they take the night off the game they lost to Newton by 28 points? I meant no disrespect as we are neighbors but the AJC won't cover you or us unless we are flawless. That's just the way it is.

The EP crew is rather quiet... let's give them a break. You can't fault the mostly good natured spirit!

Hmm....awfully quiet from the East Paulding fans around here. Guess they must of lost their cannon on the way over to Etowah. I am pretty sure I can count the number of first downs they got on one hand. I see EP as #4 in Region 5 after losing to Woodstock also......

Hold up mr. northside now we wont compare SWD to Northside at academics we would trump you every time our school host one of the best magnet programs in the state with one of the largest rates of graduation. Our school achieves AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress), and as for athletics our football has been successful we made it to the 3rd round last year. But since its a football blog thats where I will stop, Northside's bread and butter is football thats the only thing you have going might as well work hard.

I think we should watch out for it on the HS level too. Football is a tough sport. If yah can't take the heat get out the kitchen. If your so upset that the other team gave each other high fives after a score your head isn't in the right place and your focusing in on the right aspects of the game. Let the boys have some fun. Sports are a way to relax and have fun with your friends, not have to worry about if your look in the general direction of your stand that your going to get a stupid flag.

Enter your comments here Congratulations to Northside for a win Friday night against the mighty Vikes. I will suggest however, that 4 more yards from QB Cole Parker on the last drive would have turned your jubilation to melancholy. I will admit that the Plowboys did not have their usual explosive offense and will also give props to Northside defense. Northside might possibly win the Region this year, but I still believe The Vikes bring home yet another State Championship in 2009. Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger and the Vikes will use this as an opportunity to get better. Remember 4 yards does not a championship team make. Winnersville Friday coming up and just one step closer to playoffs and another Championship ring.

Definitely making no excuses for UGA here. Just saying that phantom flags have the ability to threaten a game's outcome, that's all. All we were asking y'all is if it's something to keep watch for in the HS football realm since the college and pro ranks are so anti-fun in football now.

Our point was this: Any fan can certainly tell the difference between unsportsmanlike conduct (taunting, excessive celebrating, hurting someone, starting a fight) and just having a small celebration w/teammates after a TD. Is it really so awful for teammates to give a guy slaps on the back for scoring in this day and age? Seriously, are these 6-3 / 225 top recruits so emotionally delicate that they can't handle seeing the other team give each other atta-boys?

If so, all your AJC Sports mod can say is this: Apparently there have been way too many "Everybody goes to Dairy Queen win or lose after the game because you all tried really REALLY hard and there are no losers in sports -- we're ALL winners in LIFE" moments for today's kids playing organized sports. When some of us were kids the line was clear: If you won, you won. You celebrated. If you lost, you lost. Next time you tried harder. No whining. No "stop celebrating because you scored" flags. Handshakes after the game. Respect and see you next time. Sheesh.

It's called discretion. Cops and judges use it all the time. Refs should, too. We're just curious to see if more unsportsmanlikes start being called in the HS level as well.

No excuses for UGA or any other team that doesn't post offense for most of a game. That won't win you much football, no matter what team you are.

eaglenation rising you are wrong about the size of MLK and stephenson. Dekalb county builds schools based on old census reports so by the time the school is built it is too small for the area the enrollment at those school are less than 2000. gwinnettfulton and cobb have the mega schools of 3000 or more

Newton Parent, thanks, I am not looking forward to playing you guys. We have Stephenson, Newton and then MLK going to the playoffs. The danger in that kind of schedule right before the playoffs is trying to keep everyone healthy for the playoffs. We do know that if we cut our penalties down we can do well. Like UGA we get our fair share and then some. ENR said it right and so did you; one can have all the talent in the world but if the team lacks good quality coaching then they will never realize their full potential. UG, Woodland, Newton and let's not leave Dutchtown out are doing really well and it is because of coaching.

Go UG: Looking forward to the game with yall, it will truly be a great barometer on where we are as a program. Truth is Henry is on the rise, I can remember when every team out there sucked growing up in Dekalb. Yall got a good thing going at UG, you can tell by how good things are going at Woodland. I hope that yall rep 2-AAAAA to the fullest in the playoffs, but yall HAVE to beat King or Stephenson to have a chance or yall know you might be looking at going to WR or Valdosta in RD 2. Im hoping we can sneak in out of the region it would be huge for our school and keep some of the talented kids in our district and keep momentum going for the future.

Observer, I am a huge Dawg fan and you are correct UGA had their opportunities and squandered them. We were all sitting their yesterday saying if only Stafford were back out there. I know one thing, a Vince Dooley team never got as many penalties as the Richt show is getting. Richt said in an interview that he was not concerned about being up toward the top in penalties as they are; maybe he should be. One has to wander what the outcome would have been had we received two less penalties yesterday.

Newnan fan, little did you know that mcintosh started this year 3-1, and has a starting roster containing 5 D1 recruits, and has been listed on many websites as the team to watch for this year. Yeah ok you can say that Newnan would destroy Mcintosh, but that doesnt mean anything because Newnan is a 5A powerhouse, and if a 5A powerhouse loses they lose their respect plain and simple

No matter who is playing when a game ends as the clock runs out with a 60 yard pass, and the reciever breaks three tackle to get into the endzone against a rival team it is huge, and i wanna thank FOX 5 for telling the story of that game, and other sites for making that play one of the top plays in the state of georgia so far this season.

And if you didnt know, Fayette County won their game two weeks ago in Double OT with a field goal by a kicker who in his life had NEVER even played a game of football. So you keep worrying bout Newnan and if you aint got nothin good to say, then dont say nothin. Cause you dont know what your really talking bout.

TJ: Valdosta HS and Warner Robins are examples of two schools that have dealt with an aging population within their district. What is a new high school? It is a school that sits in an area with new housing development. The older school sit in a district with an established school zone. The zone grows and the new schools sits in the district where there were once woods and open land.

Although a school does not deal with redistricting in the manner that many metro Atlanta schools get, there are schools that deal with changes in districts. Whether a district is growing or not, that district is aging. Valdosta had a 50 year run. Now, the Wildcats are far from the state's eilte. They were once the nation's most elite every season.

If you want to see a fanbase that is having a challenge with their correct situation travel to McConnell-Talbert Stadium during any Warner Robins HS games. However, if you visit Warner Robins, some of the oldest neighborhoods in the city are districts that feed into Warner Robins HS. The parents are now grandparents. The grandparents are now great-grandparents.

What matters is how many students are in the school. My point to Go UG and SWD Panthers is those are still large high schools. The same is the case for Gwinnett County schools. Many of the Gwinnett Co. schools are so much larger than some of the AAAAA programs, one could make and argument that Georgia needs a AAAAAA classification. Take a look at the enrollment of schools like Collins Hill. Every HS in Gwinnett County has enough students to pool from to be successful. There are no excuses about redistricting.

One more thing: East Paulding fans yall are really fluking out on this blog after getting blown out Friday. Truth is yall might not be as good as you thought you were, or yall might actually pull it together after this loss and do something special. Either way, to get clowned like yall have on this blog with very little reponse after a loss kind of makes yall look lame. EP fans dominate this blog throughout the week talking about a team that frankly, has only had a couple of years of success in a row to speak of. So Im gonna need EP fans to please show a little more humility during the week prior to a game, or lot more when you lose convincingly. JMO

ENR, hopefully that won't affect your coaching staff like it did ours. Although we miss our old staff we lucked up and got another good staff. You are absolutely correct in your assumption that Dekalb County has and has had excellent athletes for years. While we do have good talent I could not imagine what we would do if we had some of Dekalb’s athletes.
I was down at the UG/Greenbrier game Friday night and kept waiting on the announcer to announce the score of the NSWR/Lowndes game, he never did. I guess they did not know you guys were playing. I had read all the posts leading up to the game and going strictly by the posts expected Lowndes to hand it to you. I could not believe the score.....WOW! I guess you guys did not buy into the hype and get intimidated...Good job!
I gotta tell you that Newton County is emerging as the sleeper in 2AAAAA. I think they are a lot better than everyone thought.

AJC I absolutely agree with your last post about these idiot officials. Why don't we make the teams walk not run in single file to their respective benches, place their hands in their laps until their time to take the field and oh....no talking!!!!

AJC Sports, aj green shouldnt have gotten the penalty, it was the TEAM that kept jumping on him that prevented him from getting off the field. you cant call the penalty on the team, so they called it on green. the penalty made no difference, lsu recieved the same treatment when they scored. uga had a chance to come back, and unlike lsu, they couldnt capitalize. maybe uga shouldve stopped holiday, or tackled charles scott instead of letting him run 30 yards for a touchdown. yea the refs were bad, but georgia lost plain and simple. it wasnt the refs fault, everyone has bad calls every game. GEORGIA LOST. quit making excuses

GwinnettFan: I know that this surprises people. However, Valdosta really has their backs against the wall. If the Wildcats (who could be undefeated with a positive bounce or two AND could be winless in the region with a fortunate bounce against Warner Robins) loses at Lowndes County on Friday night, Valdosta will fall to 1-3 in the region. That is scary.

We all have to understand that Peachtree Ridge and Grayson are relatively new high schools in relatively new communities. It takes time to build tradition. Programs like the four that you listed (Northside-Warner Robins, Camden County, Lowndes County, and Valdosta) have been at this thing for a very, very long time.

The AAAAA state playoffs are going to be extremely competitive this year. I expect home teams to have great success. However, I believe that there are going to be some big upsets. We are going to have some fun.

A lot of schools redistrict in Gwinnett, most do not drop their AAAAA status but they drop in amount of games they win. Talent just gets reduced. Good coaching staffs find a way to win which should be a positive for Northside. I just wonder if Camden and Lowndes ever had to deal with redistricting, would they be as successfull.

Best places for a AAAAA playoff game:

1. Lowndes
2. Camden Co
3. Northside
4. Valdosta (wish they would get back to a state power again)

Northern AAAAA school stadiums just do not have the same atmosphere. Home filed at these stadiums are worth 7-10 points. The same can not be said about northern schools.

Peachtree Ridge, Grayson and North look forward to good football games against teams outside of Metro Atlanta. The playoffs should be interesting this year.

I still give the nod to Lowndes and Northside but Grayson, Peachtree Ridge and North should be able to give them a challange in the later rounds. I personally hope the games are in south Georgia because the athmosphere is better.

I grew up in Decatur and straight up, even if you did combine players from SWD,MLK, and Stephenson alone, who would coach this team of superstars to a state title? Gartrell, Godfrey or Jarvis? Between the three you have over 50 years of coaching experience, a gang of talented players and 1 STATE TITLE. I don't see the championship pedigree from coaches, especially from Gartrell; what are you doing with all that talent? Community support wouldn't hurt either; All three of yall play home games at Halford Stadium; where is the homefield edge? Just saying there is more to winning state titles than just fielding talented future NCAA/NFL players. I think the Lowndes and NSWR of the world are showing that.

Go UG: Schools with tons of tradition also are at an advantage. You are correct. A new high school does affect a new high school. My point to the DeKalb County schools is those schools can attract very good coaches. DeKalb has more teachers apply for positions every year than any other Georgia county. There are absolutely no excuses for the DeKalb County schools, which are huge.

By the way, Go UG!, Northside-Warner Robins, Warner Robins, and Houston County are about to have a new high school (Veterans HS) that will open its doors next August.

Go UG: Northside is about to move back down to AAAA. A new high school will open in Warner Robins called Veterans HS next year. There was a push to keep Northside as a AAAAA school. However, there is not that kind of mentality at the school. Our school is going to compete against schools that are our size. I know that some schools play up due to traditions, like Clarke-Central and the many schools in Savannah. Northside-Warner Robins traditions are against Warner Robins. We will play local teams like Warner Robins, Houston County, and eventually Veterans.

It appears that Warner Robins and Houston County play continue to play AAAAA football. I am not certain when it will happen. I do know that Northside will not be playing AAAAA football for long.

After seeing that bogus "unsportsmanlike conduct" call on A.J. Green in the LSU-UGA game yesterday afternoon, can we just all agree that common sense in football refereeing -- high school, college or pro level -- seriously needs to make a fast comeback? Understandably, the zebras were hamstrung by the NCAA rulebook but does ALL the fun need to be sucked out of football as we know it? I think any of us on this board know the difference between true unsportsmanlike conduct and just celebrating with teammates after a touchdown. And I bring it up because if NCAA takes some cues from the NFL (No Fun League) and high schools take some cues from NCAA, look for the heavy-handedness to continue. I'm still trying to figure out what A.J. Green did to get flagged. He sure didn't throw No. 1s to the sky like the LSU guy who scored later -- and was also flagged. Nothing against LSU here, but the difference in end zone celebrations was pretty obvious.

Yesterday's call in the UGA game may have changed the outcome. (And please, non-UGA fans -- nobody's playing favorites here; your AJC Sports mod thinks any team getting that kind of call would've been getting jobbed. It was just UGA's tough luck Saturday. But it could've been your team.) That's a really bad precedent.

Anyone else see a trend of governing bodies - states, NCAA, NFL - taking a little TOO much of the joy out of the game? Personally, I say if we want to play football with zero exuberance where the guys trod the field like robots, we can just all get the old magnetic games out of the attic, fire them up and watch the little figures move around the steel with no trace of the human element whatsoever.

Lighten up, NCAA, NFL, etc. Let the game stay a GAME.

That's our (OK, my) opinion. We welcome yours.

Oh one more thing, many times when the new schools are built it disrupts the programs of the schools losing the kids. Furthermore, many times it disrupts the coaching staffs. Again I may need a correction on this next statement, but when Woodland opened UG coaching staff was disrupted big time. Mike McDonald was at UG but I think with the opening of Woodland he was not going to be allowed to keep his staff intact. Woodland is only a few miles up the road. If there were a new school built up the street from NSWR what would that do to your students and staff. BUT, all this is hypothetical and we could "what-if" and beat it to death. It is what it is. You guys have an awesome program.

Leechampion: Shaw HS has had the best baseball players in Columbus for years. It is ironic that everyone is throwing their arms up now about Carver is football. Columbus HS owns girls' basketball there in Columbus. The city has a tradition of the best players from the city going to one or two schools. What is happening now at Carver in football is not unique, if you are honest.

Shaw is the last school that can cry fool. They have been recruiting in baseball for years.

Congrats NSWR HS I knew you guys would defend the MAC and get the job done. Anyways, here not only to represent the playoff- bound Newton Rams, but Newton Co. as a whole. Please leave us out of this category of also-rans we are depicted to be. We are much better than people think by evidence of our 3TD trouncing of Redan at HC on Friday. We are currently 3-2 with losses to Alcovy(5-1) and undefeated Stephenson. 3-2 might not sound like much but it is here where we haven't had much success lately. Speaking of Alcovy, they moved to 5-1 with a win this weekend over previously undefeated Dutchtown on the road. Their only loss was by a FG to #5 North Clayton. Also big up to Eastside HS, who went to Toccoa and knocked off a talented Stephens Co. team by a FG. To have all three Newton schools make the playoffs this year would be huge, but my Rams look to have the toughest road with games left with UG and MLK. At any rate, huge night for Newton schools keep it going and lets continue to progress.

ENR, I cannot argue with you. It sounded good when Dekalb said it anyway. I did not know that NS had less than 2000 students. I think I have heard that UG is dropping to 4A next year; someone correct me if I am wrong. Good coaching is everything. Look at Morrow back in the 70's before Theodocian came there. Morrow won one game per year. The first year Theodocian was there they went 3-7, then 7-3, then 10-0 and won the state championship in 1987 and they really did not dress out that many players. ENR you guys beat us last year in the playoffs what 24-7 at your house, that wasn't shameful especially since our starting tailback was out. We are holding our own.

Leechampion: No Northside poster called a beatdown. Northside posters called a win. We got a win. For all the chatter and hype about Lowndes County, the 4th ranked team in the nation, you have to wonder. There were clear missteps...MAJOR missteps...by the Lowndes County coaching staff. The players did not execute. Alarming for a team that is supposed to be the 4th best team in America.

What people need to understand is this Lowndes County team is not even close to the highest rated team to step into that stadium. It was just another team and just another win. We could care less about beatdowns. Perhaps, that matters in Lee County. We play to win the game. We won the game!

There is a reason that Lowndes missed those field goals. Two of those misses came after penalties that pushed the team back. Leechampion: At what point have high school field goal kickers been automatic??? I have seen a lot of high school football. I did not know that kicking was automatic in high school. Northside-Warner Robins beat the #1 team in the nation, 7-6, after the kicker missed an extra point. Kickers miss all the time in high school. Why are you guys acting like kickers are automatic i high school. 30+ yard field goal attempts are not automatic, especially in South Georgia. Metro Atlanta teams have traditionally had better kicker, especially in Gwinnett and Cobb County.

We play to win the game. We won the game. We have a tough schedule ahead and still have a great deal of work to do.

Southwest DeKalb Panthers & Go UG: In the late 1980s and early 1990s, SWD was one of the three largest school in the state. In the meantime, DeKalb County schools perform WORSE than any metro Atlanta county with the exception of Clayton County schools from an academic standpoint and test scores. Do not attempt to debate this point. It is a FACT! Southwest DeKalb is a very large school. How many students do you guys think a school needs to be competitive at the highest levels? Less than 35 players play regularly at the top programs. At many schools less. To pretend that Union Grove or SWD have a lack of a student pool to be very successful is a joke.

Save the excuses! Northside has less than 2000 students and just beat the 4th ranked school in America. Miami's Booker T. Washington were the defending state champions from Florida and got beat 31-7 by Northside (a smaller school than BTW). Lowndes County is a larger school than Northside. You need 30-35 focused kids and a strong coaching staff. The DeKalb County schools are not at a disadvantage (at least on the sports field).

To pretend that Union Grove or SWD have a lack of a student pool to be very successful is a joke.

can't resist. nice win NSWR but not exactly a beat down when other team missed chip shot field goal to tie at end. one win only counts when it is the one at the Dome. As to Carver and Lagrange, Columbus has way too many high schools to have more than one good team, especially when Dell "charles Flowers" Mcgee has the recruiting bus taking all Shaw's kids over to Carver.also note Lagrange played NEwnan and Carver played both Baldwin and the new best team on the planet NSWR in outofregion games.regards to yo,reese, drock, sgtchris and slalom

Go UG!: Are you guys serious????? Stephenson and Martin Luther King are two of the largest schools in the entire state of Georgia. New schools are built because there are too many students for the school that was built. MLK and Stephenson are HUGE schools!!! To write an excuse thread about the size of your schools is shameful.

Stephenson, MLK, and Southwest DeKalb do not lose because they lose students. Stephenson, MLK, and Southwest DeKalb lose because of subpar coaching, delay of game penalties while in the red zone (like Lowndes County agaisnt Northside-Warner Robins on Friday night). No program in the past 25 years has had more players sign at major NCAA Division I than Southwest DeKalb HS. Nonetheless, Southwest DeKalb posters are making excuses about enrollment. Of course, someone from Union Grove HS is applauding his excuse thread. AMAZING!

Yo, 84Vikings, VikingsFan, SportsFan31313, SouthGARules (unless they are playing Northside-Warner Robins from Middle Georgia): It is nice to hear that you guys are doing well. I am glad that you guys crawled from under the rock, which is played at the MAC against Northside. I am happy that we are all on the same page now about Northside Eagle Football. There is no accident that Northside has not lost since Octber of 2004. There is not a conincidence to the fact that Northside has not lost a regular season game since September of 1996. Home field matters.

Any comments from you guys about the great Randy McPherson. Any comments about Conrad Nix for you guys. Any comments about Northside defensive coordinator Kevin Kinsler. Let's remember that Northside is a team with all sophomores and juniors.

SW Dekalb Panthers, there is a lot of truth in what you said. In Henry County we have I think 9 High Schools. Union Grove lost a lot of students to Woodland when they opened. Woodland is doing great they are currently 4-1 with their only loss coming to Lowndes. We have quite a bit of talent but like you they are spread out throughout the gazillion schools.

South Georgia and North Georgia schools are lucky down hear in the city of Decatur that we have a large number of schools, because if we were not divided our programs would be Prolific year after year SWD, MLK, Lithonia, and Miller Grove would all be one Dekalb County entity. But enough with the fantasizing we still compete hard despite the scarceness of talent and the threats of new schools being developed. SWD is a perennial powerhouse in AAAA and we are ready to hit the brackets

Go UG...after today's weak offense performance, I would bet a lot of GA H.S. QB's could stand in with a better result! It's easy to see why he was #2 QB behind Stafford.

Jaybo, the south Ga boy writes, "I expect you to go deep into the playoffs and cause a lot of teams problems as the season goes on."

You freakin' kidding me with that weak statement after a win such as last night?! I know your loyalties lie in S. GA football, however, Northside beat an outstanding Lowndes County team, the PREVIOUS #1 team and #5 in the country. I know everyone outside of the middle GA area will dismiss this overwhelming fact. Northside receives such little respect, but, eventually they will make many outside of Middle GA believers. Not just throw some hype as Lowndes County fans did on this board.

Northside is for real.

The FACT is the team to beat right now is Northside Warner Robins. This team is young, SMART, HUGE, FAST and getting stronger week after week. Their potential is DOMINATING! The Ridge was DEMOLISHED by Lowndes County and of course we all know what happened last night. Northside is a powerful and complete team on both sides of the football. They have depth that equals the best in the state...or better. Even their back up QB is a pure pocket passer and has the poise and arm to do so and is being scouted by Div 1 teams.

I'm dumbfounded how Northside get's little respect state wide on this board. Must be a lot of haters of any program outside the Atlanta metro area. Sheeple that believe the hype written by those on this board instead of seeing a team first hand.

Word of caution...view in PERSON the team you disregard or you will look just like all the bloviating Lowndes County posters. Eating crow pie all weekend.

I don't know how deep Union Grove will go in the playoffs but we do have some good talent. Jordan Aikens made a pretty AJ Green TD catch in the back of the end zone last night, TJ Moon had an awsome 45 yard TD. I did not know he was THAT FAST! Donovan Johnson ran really well and the Defense plays hard from bell to bell. If we can work on our penalites we will be in good shape.

AJC ,you are 100 correct about McDonald at Newnan. Coach Herring won 5 state championships in 3 different states. Coach McDonald has steered this ship with a steady hand and we expect to take it the dome and win.

Northside Obsever,

There is one guy in your fan base I have issues with and he makes others wanna hate your program! But I have much respect for you my friend as a blogger as we have chatted back and forth the past couple of seasons. Let me congratulate you on NS victory over Lowndes! Yes, I was pulling for Lowndes as a south Ga. boy and yes, I did predict Lowndes would win in a runaway...I was wrong!!! I watched the game via the internet and NS looks strong man!!! I expect you to go deep into the playoffs and cause a lot of teams problems as the season goes on. Thankyou, for the dignified way that you talk about your team...you talk smack when others talk it to...and hey, thats no problem!!! The difference is you support your team like a civil, respectful mature man and others should take notes from you!! Take care and again congrats on your victory!!!!

Fayco Tiger Fan, are you serious? I didn't know Mcintosh was still playing a varsity schedule. They've been bad for so long. If that's all you got to cheer about, Fayette's in bad shape. Make the playoff and make a nice run . We here at Newnan don't get any respect but we'll take care of that in due time. Trust me.

decatur - It's cool. Just leave out the "signature" message in your posts, that's all, OK? We get the point. Really. :-)

But totally feel free to keep talking Stephenson football. That's fine. No problem at all with that. Rep your school. That's what the blog is for and we're all for that. We'd just like y'all to keep the convo moving forward with the good, fresh stuff you've all been bringing this weekend. It's amazing, everything y'all have brought to the board. Great stuff. Please keep it going. Let's get PAST 500 posts!

FYI: Your AJC Sports moderator went to school with Newnan coach Mike McDonald and let me just say this -- anyone charged with replacing the legendary Robert Herring has a hard row to hoe, no matter the schedule. They demand a lot of wins down Newnan way and it's big-time tradition at that program. Mega-pressure cooker for McDonald but he seems to be handling it pretty well so far.

Northside Observer, why you hating on Newnan's schedule? Just be glad you're not on it, yet. Remember 24-0? Decatur where it's greater, be proud of your school. Combining your school talk is for losers. Stephenson and MLK need to man up and handle their business. Going into overtme with Newton sounds like it won't be this year. Sorry.
