Here are some Week 5 results that the Georgia High School Football Daily staff found of interest:
Marist 32, Tucker 7: The best rivalries are those that are most difficult to predict game to game. The lower-ranked team has won each of the past three meetings. Keys to victory were the play of new starting quarterback Andy Perez and a bunch of long touchdown runs, which was supposed to be Tucker’s calling card. Perez rushed for 108 yards and triggered a wishbone offense that sprung Sam McNearney for TD runs of 81 and 52 yards.
Avondale 14, Blessed Trinity 7: Through 1989, the school’s last winning season, Avondale was a state power. In the past few years, some alumni primarily from the 1960s and 1970s have adopted the modern football program, which was not only losing on the field but had no money to raise itself up. The efforts are beginning to pay off, apparently. This is an upset that no one could fathom in preseason. Blessed Trinity was one of only two teams to come within 21 points of beating Buford during the Wolves’ 32-game winning streak. The Blessed Trinity team that lost to Buford 14-10 last year also beat Avondale 62-13. In last week’s game, Avondale got the break it has needed for a couple of decades when, leading 6-0, Blessed Trinity was charged with a safety when a snap went out of the end zone. Joshua Bowen returned the ensuing free kick 70 yards for a touchdown for a 14-0 lead. Avondale is 3-1 for the first time since 1989.
Kennesaw Mountain 17, Harrison 14: A week ago, GHSF Daily used the Maxwell Ratings to compute that Kennesaw Mountain had fallen off more than any team in the state this season. That needs to be revised. “I know the kids didn’t like being 0-4, and they were determined to get that first win,” Kennesaw Mountain coach Scott Jones told the Marietta Daily Journal. Devon Jones scored on a 3-yard run late in the game to win it against the Mustangs’ top rival. Diamond Stewart rushed for 167 yards for Kennesaw Mountain.
Darlington 23, Bowdon 20: If Darlington wasn’t written off after quarterback Nash Nance (Vanderbilt commit) transferred to Calhoun, then it was the 0-3 start as Darlington was outscored 103-7. What was overlooked was the possibility of quick improvement. Darlington upset the No. 6 team in Class A when Nance’s replacement, freshman Brad Butler, hit Tev’n Hamilton with a 10-yard touchdown pass with 44 seconds left. “The kid gets better and better every week,” coach Tommy Atha said of Butler in the Rome News-Tribune. “The sky is the limit for him.”
Twiggs County 48, Wilcox County 14: Twiggs returned 17 of 22 starters and figured to be a Top 10 team, and this victory over the preseason No. 2 team validated those visions. Twiggs has some high-end talent in Ernest Butts (a 1,000-yard rusher the past two seasons) and Darqueze Dennard (more than 60 catches last year, first-team all-state). Twiggs is most improved on defense, though. Wilcox won this game 63-34 last year.

Etowah Fan, I know that they haven’t played anybody yet. I just thought that its sorta funny about how we’re talking about how they wont get in the region yet right now if the season stoped, they’d get a home playoff game. Which brings up another interesting question, IF the season would end today. How would the EP/Wood tie be broken? Right now they have EP in the third slot and Wood in for forth, but thats simply because E comes before W in the alphabet. Perhaps the spread of common game would be used. haha. Who knows.

I agree completely with your set up for Region 5A…and that SHOULD be how things finish up. What Wolverine2Blazer is doing is using today’s record and not being realistic as to who everyone has left to play on their schedules. Harrison as it was pointed out has yet to play anyone with a winning record that they have beat and over the next 4 weeks they will be VERY lucky to even get ONE win…I still say if they finish at .500 it will be by a GOOD stroke of luck.
I just don’t see McEachern tripping up and they have a great shot at finishing up 10-0 and it will take two (2) losses not just one to knock them out of the number one spot anyway.
wolverine fan…”No way shape or form will Etowah loose 2 in a row at home. You have a better chance of snow in July.” All I can say is it AIN’T july and I see two wins on TLP for our RAIDERS not just one. But we will start the first one Friday night with Etowah!!!

ENR & eagleforlife………. You claim the Eagles are young this year, but I counted 24 seniors on their roster. If the Eagles are that good, they should reload and not rebuild each year like our MIGHTY VIKINGS. The Eagles will feel the pain when the Viking defense hits them Friday. VIKING DAD’S prediction VIKINGS 21 EAGLES 3.

Simple = Etowah beats EP – Ep beats Woodstock, all three win their other games, three way tie for second.
Nooo, that’s too easy. We will just take care of EP this weekend and see what happens.

Hoya Chuck is too embarassed to post and I don’t understand why anyone else would even mention Harrison. There’s an excellent chance they have won their last game. I could see they were in trouble when P’Ridge slaughtered them (I was at the game and it wasn’t that close). Then they barely got by Cherokee and S Cobb?!? Lost their rabbit’s foot against rival K Mountain. So they might prevail over Marietta at home to make it to 4-6.

Don’t put too much stock in the Marietta score, the field was terrible and East was closed and didn’t practice all week. Some of you may not know that Marietta is a city school so they stayed open and practiced while the rest of Cobb county did not. Should be a very tough game at Etowah this weekend, slow vs. slower, with the game going to whoever can get a little edge on the line. East looks better based on common opponent score (McE) but Etowah has home field. I think we start to get a little push in the 4th quarter and pull out a close one Friday but lose our return trip to TLP November 6. EPHS 24 Eaglettes 21.

We both agree on this (see ALL my previous post) it looks like McEachern has to lose at least 2 games to fall from the #1 spot. But I think EAST has a GOOD shot at the #2 position.

Cannon – I am not ready to concede the #2 slot just yet. I hope Etowah will spoil EP’s chances this Friday. Interesting scenario that Pops suggests: Woodstock beat Etowah, Etowah beats EP, EP beats Woodstock, leaving a three way tie for #2. I just can’t remember the tiebreaker procedure for Region 5. I am not overly concerned about the tiebreaker procedure at this point as there is WAY TOO MUCH football yet to be played… but it’s the best scenario I can hope for right now!

Okay BullDawgBite, & WolverineFan,
Region 6 Champions will be Walton
Region 7 Champions is a toss up between North Gwinette & Pechtree Ridge. I believe that the out come will be Peachtree Ridge being the Region Champions.
Region 8 is a no Brainer. Grayson will be the Region Champions.

You say the RAIDERS lost AT McEachern like we are the only one…Don’t forget that Etowah got blown out by them and Woodstock lost AT HOME to them so it seems we all got a bit of a whipping this year from McEachern…
At this point I really think it is an obvious conclusion that the #’s 2,3,& 4 positions in Region 5A are going to be decided by the games between EAST, Etowah & Woodstock.

SportsFan31313 – you can’t throw a toss-up out there in your picks… man-up a pick a winner. BTW, why Walton over Roswell or Lassiter? Just curious. The projected power structure in Region 6 has yet to really play each other yet so that race is really hard to predict. Kell (the preseason #1 pick by GHSF Daily and reigning R6 champion) got beat by all three plus Woodstock to open the season 0-4. Way too early to tell in that region race, IMHO.

Here’s a motivational thought for the EP/Etowah game this Friday. Whoever loses that game, can lock in the #4 seed most likely and look forward to a long road trip to play Grayson in the first round of the playoffs.
That isn’t a pleasant prospect………I think EP plays really really hard to avoid that one.
Etowah Eagle fans, have fun making that trip…and the drive back will be longer.

I use the toss up because it too early to tell right now. But yes, I pick Walton over the remaining. Walton does has a pretty track record in recent years. Lassiter, Roswell, and Milton should make it to the Post season. But I am picking Walton as the favorite to take Region 6-AAAAA. Any Walton fans out here on the Blog?

I really don’t see Harrison making it this year unless the other 3 just bomb out. I’m going with McEachern, followed by East Paulding, (If they don’t screw up on Friday Night by Losing) then Woodstock, and last Etowah. That is my order of seed.

Sorry to ruin your fun, but we ended up in round three. FYI
Ok, so question here. Why did they change the seeding in the playoff brackets? last year Region 5&6 played in the first round and now 5 plays 8. Anybody know the reasoning behind this?
Cannon, that was not the point of my post. I fully am aware that McE is sweeping the region. (and i wouldn’t call the Wood-McE game a whipping, more like a really good ball game) I was just saying that the 3 toughest games are all away.

to answer your question wolverine. i think they probably want different teams to play each other first round that wouldnt normally play in interregion play. region five and region 8s dont usually play each other. besides some regions are simply weaker every year and some are stronger every year so you dont want 1 region to bear the brunt of playing the tough region every year first round. thats my best guess

For Wolverine2Blazer: The regional matchups rotate each year as I understand it, last year it was 5&6, 7&8, this year it is 5&8, 6&7, and next it will be 5&7, 6&8. It is done to introduce as much fairness and parity a possible in case. (kinda so you don’t play and potentially get beat every year by the same team in the playoffs).
The southern four regions rotate in a similar fashion I believe also.

I think that if we did it north v.s. south in the first round it would have both pluses and minuses. It would reward those who finish highest in their region because the first round would require the visiting team to potentially drive a long distance possibly. but, what about those regions who are weaker besides the top team? does the #2 seed deserve to host homefield which would be a distinct advantage if the travel time is extensive? right now the south ga teams in the first couple rounds dont have to travel too far. but the north teams travel even less. it would create interesting match ups… is it worth it? ill let you decide.

WolverineFan…Why are you such a jerk? Why do you despise EP so much? Our kids didn’t beat you last year. Your team won. Why such hostility? You want us to lose every game. Answer…why? If you hate us fans, say so. The kids don’t deserve it, they play hard, want to win every game, I don’t think they wish illfate upon any other team but the team they’re playing that week. Is it because the fans and parents are ecstatic at our turn around in the last few years? Is it the fact that we were told that we would never “compete” in AAAAA? Well, we’ve proven that. We can win a few games in AAAAA. We’ve been in the hunt both years in the region. Does our characteristic cannon piss you off that much? We’re very proud of our boys. RealisticEPFan – your point is dead-on about the prospects for the #4 seed in the post season. I can assure you that fact is also playing into the magnitude of this game on Friday. Coach Stewart admitted that in a roundabout way after the Woodstock game last Friday when he spoke to the press and was already looking to this game with EP as BIG.

As the #4 seed in Region 5A you would indeed have to play Grayson as the Region 8 Winner and #1 position seed. EAST on the other hand WHEN they end up the Region 5A #2 seed will draw either…Brookwood, Parkview, or South Gwinnett. It’s a handful no matter how it shakes out the Gwinnett teams are a handful!

First of all, Beyond Stephenson’s starters they drop off a bit. This may be the last good Stephenson Team for awhile. Last years team overall was better. They don’t have 30 D1 recruits. Truth be told they only have about 7; 1 on offense RB Raymond Sanders, and 5 on that defense # 1, # 34 # 3 # 56 and #2 and possibly the MLB # 22. # 3 and 22 and 2 are out to injuries. Stephenson Football players are giving Newton County their props not crying; They have a much improved defense.
