Griffin takes over No. 1 at AAAA

Griffin is the new No. 1 in Class AAAAA.

Not sure it shouldn’t be Westside, though. That’s a real toss-up. We let Westside jump Southwest DeKalb, so if Griffin slips in its game vs. North Clayton in a couple of weeks, Westside likely would be the team to take Griffin’s place. But I don’t see Griffin losing through the regular season.

Griffin was No. 1 in preseason and for a couple of weeks in 2005. Griffin’s two losses that year were to the AAAA finalists, Northside and Statesboro. The last time Griffin has been ranked No. 1 this late was 1980.

Speaking of Northside, the Eagles have a big game this week vs. Lowndes. I don’t think there’s been a true road team to beat Northside at home since the mid-1990s. I believe it was Peach County in 1996. (I’ll look it up here shortly.)

Meanwhile, Lowndes is crushing its opponents. Lowndes has scored on the first play from scrimmage in three of five games, according to the Valdosta Daily Times. I’m going to ask for a Lowndes volunteer to document how many times Lowndes has scored on a run from scrimmage of 50 yards or more, or on defense or special teams. It’s remarkable how this Wing T team breaks so many runs on people.

In other news, McEachern jumps a little at the expense of Stephenson, which needed overtime to beat Newton.

Tucker remained ranked after it got smoked by Marist. That’s news because Tucker dropped out of the rankings last year when it lost to Marist 38-0. Franklin Stephens reminded me of that last week and hoped it wouldn’t happen again.

And finally, Grayson. I know the Rams are good, but it’s interesting that Grayson has trailed or been tied in the fourth quarter of three of its five victories. Is that meaningful? I don’t think Lowndes has trailed or been tied after the first two  minutes.

LOL! First off… Eagleforlife is a FEMALE not a MALE… ASSUMPTIONS… Second off, what exactly do I “not know what am I talking about”. This will be a hard played game for BOTH teams. Just as someone said earlier, WHO HAS LOWNDES played this year??? NO ONE! And what happened to their state title last year with Mr. Reid?? I WILL BE here at 10:30 Friday night.. and if I’m wrong, will admit it.

AVIKING Fan,

I agree with you: referenced the bloggers in Region 5 & 6 AAAAA talking about Camden County. Let me go further. Although Camden County is 2-2 I tried to tell people on the blog as to why Camden County is still ranked, and Todd Holcomb tried to explain. I wont explain any more. I will just say this:

No team in Region 2 , 5, or Region 6 AAAAA could beat Camden County to in include McEachern.

EagleNationsRising,

No one has beaten the Northside Warner Robbins Eagles at home since 1995. That says a lot… But it speaks even louder when Lowndes County come to play Northside Warner Robbins and beat them in their own Stadium.

To eagleforlife and eagle nation rising (we know you’re out there working to regale us peons with your next brilliant analytical dissertation):

Interesting question, WHO HAS LOWNDES played this year? Hmmm … have you thought of asking the same question about your eagles? Let’s take a look at both teams, and ENR, please bestow some of your genius on me as I attempt to get this right:

Lowndes is 5-0, ranked #1 in GA, and ranked anywhere from 3rd to 5th in five national polls. Northside is 4-0, ranked #4 in GA, and unranked in any of the national polls.

Lowndes’ opponents are 15-10 this year, or .600. Northside’s opponents are 12-8, also .600.

Lowndes has played three Class 5A teams, one 4A team, and one 3A team. Northside has played two Class 5A teams, and two 3A teams. Using some of ENR’s misguided logic, add up all the “A’s” and Lowndes has played 22 “A’s”. Divide this by its five games and you get a “strength of class” rating of 4.4. Northside has played a total of 16 “A’s”. Divide this by its four games and you get a 4.0. (Like I said, this is along the lines of ENR’s galactically-stupid “logic”.)

Lowndes destroyed (51-17!) Class 5A and then-ranked #3 Peachtree Ridge, currently ranked #9 in this very poll that you’re posting on. Peachtree was last year’s state 5A runner-up, losing to the same Camden Co that eliminated your Eagles in the second round. Peachtree was also the state co-champion in 2007. Peachtree will be a state playoff team this year. Woodland, the Class 3A team Lowndes beat 75-14 this year, is now 4-1.

Northside beat Class 3A and then #1-ranked (I think) Carver by eight points. Carver is currently ranked #4 in 3A. Carver won state in 2007 in Class 3A. Northside beat Perry 42-7 this year, another 3A team which is now 1-4.

Lowndes has beaten two region 1-5A opponents, Colquitt Co (31-6) and Tift Co (50-7). Colquitt is 4-1 this year and Tift is 1-4. Northside has beaten two region 1-5A opponents, Valdosta (16-13) and Houston Co (42-7). Valdosta is 4-1 this year and Houston is 3-2.

Lowndes has outscored its opponents 248-44, an average of 49.6-8.8, or a margin of 40.8 ppg. Northside has outscored its opponents 121-42, an average of 30.2-10.5, or a margin of 19.8 ppg.

Lowndes has won five state titles (’80, ‘99, ‘04, ‘05, and ‘07), all of them in the largest class in the state. Northside has won two state titles (’06 and ‘07), both in the 2nd largest class.

From 2004 thru 2009, Lowndes has won 44 games at its home field. In that same period, Northside has won 41 home games. (Get out your slide rule, ENR!)

Finally, this: in the only fact that might have some correlation in analyzing which team is better before they play, please refer to that Generally Accepted Sports Principle (GASP) called … What have you done for me lately? And the “latest” example of these two teams playing is last year’s 24-6 win by Lowndes over Northside.

What does all this mean? Nothing, but ain’t it fun?!

Can’t help but close with this: Mr. ENR, we eagerly await your forthcoming analysis and more garbage and ranting and squawking about your esoteric, worthless and illogical correlation regarding Northside’s recent record at home. So let me go ahead and give you this equally great (and equally-meaningless) analysis:

In games in which it has outscored its opponents, Lowndes’ record is 303-0. In HOME games in which it has outscored its opponents, Lowndes’ record is 186-0.

To paraphrase Johnny Paycheck, take your stats and shove it.

RealisticEPFan – OK so your comments sting (a little), but I chalk-up the McEachern game more to an anamoly. Etowah moved the ball just couldn’t score when it got close (turnovers, etc). Part of the game, but the point is the score is misleading. McEachern was clearly the better team. The second loss to Woodstock was very close and the game could have gone either way (sloppy game by the way).

Etowah is still learning and we are dearly missing the big play potential we had last year in our FB. I just hope EP is looking past Etowah to Woodstock. Etowah is certainly not looking any further than this Friday. Be clear, I think Etowah is the underdog and I predict Chip will pick EP over Etowah. Not a bad place to talk smack from though.

To DJ Kwan Bynum: You better find a new job spinning ’cause you ain’t doing a very good job here. Among Tucker’s “paper” wins last year were 2AAAA champ Brunswick, playoff-bound Chambee, Quarterfinalist SWD, playoff bound Whitewater, playoff bound Hillgrove, undefeated top-ranked Westside of Macon in the Quarters, a 34-0 win against Semifinalist Griffin, and an avenging state championship win against Marist, the same team that destroyed Tucker earlier in the season. That’s a pretty impressive resume’.

Love or hate Tucker, along with that “paper” came the “Trophy”.

To “pity poor monroe area” I agree that a championship team should always play all out but I assume what that person was implying was that they have had a few games where the outcome was almost a given with 3 blowouts against very overmatched teams that the toughest part of their schedule is the second half where they will have to be more focused agaist Marist, Tucker, Stone Mountain and even Lithonia and the region championship at stake.

Could it be that 2-2 Newton, whose wins were over McIntosh and Eastside (12-2, state qtr in AAA last year) and only other loss was to 3-1 Alcovy, is actually better than people think? Period point blank we got talent down here in Newton Co. and Stephenson is overrated. With 10+ D1 prospects and the feeder programs they have, Stephenson should be dominating folks. But Gartrell is holding him back with that old Shamrock High School playbook of his.

Goober, I sure do like the way you think! Let me add to your “amazing” stats. This year Lowndes has played a total of 240 minutes of football in our 1st five games. Lowndes has not trailed in a single game. For a grand total of 7 minutes and 34 seconds the score has been tied 0-0. That means Lowndes has led a total of 232 minutees and 26 seconds. The Woodland game in which Lowndes won 75-14, the Vikings were held scoreless for the 1st three minutes and 57 seconds, before they got over their sluggish start. BTW, Woodland is 4-1 since that game. How ’bout these stats Eagle Nation-Rising? Pretty good huh, GOOBER? We’ve had 7 TD’s of 65 yards or more. What does all this mean. NADA, nothing, unless the ball bounces our way this coming Friday. Last week Etowah and Woodstock played in what they called the Battle of TLP. I guess this week Lowndes and Northside’s game could be called the Battle of the Big MAC. Whatever, it will be two very good teams going at it. Northside’s home winning streak is awesome. The home field advantage should make NSWR the favorite by 7 points or so. So how ’bout it eagleforlife, will you spot me 6 points?

Why do you guys think region 4 is weak!!!! Region 4 has 5 Caliber teams!!!!! Griffin NClayton MntZion Ducthtown and Alcovy!!!! Do your research!!! what people dnt know is that Mnt Zion was beat up when they played Nclayton!!! Both runnings backs played with injuries and their best definsive player broke his collar bone in the griffin game!!! mnt Zion is pretty good!! they should have beat marist in the third round last year!!!!! they have that whole team back!!! Dutchtown has like 15 starters back from last year and they are 5-0!!! alcovy is tough too!! i have never seen a weak region have all 4 teams advance to the second round of the playoffs 2 to the third and 1 in the final 4!!!

Region 6 only have 3 caliber teams!!! well 2 and a half cause tucker isnt the tucker of the past!!! they dnt have Drayton Calhoun or Johnathan Davis!!!!! Davis was tucker for the las 2 years!! he was the man! without him they are average!!!! thats it for region 6 everybody else suck!!! no disrespect but we all know its true!!!!! so that means that Marist SWD and Tucker only have 2 tough Games all year!! Wow!!! 2 tough games how tough is that???In the past region six was the best!!! in 2009 Region 4 is better hands down!!!! We will all see come playoff time!!!

i agree swd and marist are the teams to beat this year but yall dont realize that yall are still counting tucker out.. last year tucker and marist were the teams to beat in the region and swd still snuck out of there and all most made it to the 3rd round in a very close game.. last year ppl sleep on tucker after they lost to marist 34 to 0 5th game of the season. they said we would lose to hillgrove, they said when we took that trip to westside macon there was no way we would win, (who cares what they said bout that griffin game we whooped them) and finally they picked marist over us in the championship but at the end of the day look where they stood.. tucker has been doubted for the past three years since coach stphens has been there and all we have done is made belivers out of ppl and proved them wrong. we have a very young team like i stated befor but tucker will forever be talented and fast, and thats something tucker teams will always have. we have two of the top juniors in the state (#8james vaughters, #1chris sanders) and plenty other talent that you might not know about. i agree the chances of tucker repeating is very slim but then in 07 i remember they told us we wouldnt go back to the dome, in 08 i find us there winnig a state championship..
i ride for team through thick and thin it aint over for tucker dont count us out mark my words. i promise you at the least a 2nd round apperance.. i know its early to start talking on next year when this year is only half way done but no matter what happens this year next year when c.sand and vaughters and the matured o line, matured #3normin hayes(qb), matured tucker team comes back in 2010 they will be unstoppable i think they will be playing teams nationally and run right over because no team in the state in any class will be able to mess wit them(i know its kinda early to discuss that but its just a lil fact)

I did not think they could win it all after that first Marist loss and letting the title slip through their hand the year before with the loss to Northside after having that big lead at halftime but somehow they put things together the second half of the season and had some very big wins against some very good programs including their easiest playoff victory against Griffin. So good luck it wont be easy but you are in region 6 so “represent”.

I talked with someone who mentioned how impressed the newton coach was with how well the field held up after the rain,do you remember anyone slipping? Do you remember Newton fumbling the ball? nothing happened in this game that affected the outcome but the play and the bottom line is Newton outplayed stephenson until OT. Marc

SportsFan31313 apparently you pick the post to respond too. I already said that Tucker isn’t as good as last year but neither is Marist. Last year Tucker got drummed by Marist in their first game and processed to return the favor on ever team that they meet in the playoffs. The score of a game does not necessarily represent the game itself. The score of the championship game against Marist appeared close but Marist offense had the ball for 11 minutes and had a TOTAL of 77 yards offense (if I remember correctly). And I’m repeating myself this year Tucker did as much to lose the game as Marist did to win. That is not taking anything away from Marist but take away a couple of long runs for Marist and dropped passes by Tucker and the score could have been different. I will also say that unless Tucker offensive coordinator changes the way he calls the games even with all of Tucker’s talent they won’t make it far in the playoffs if they even get there.

If you saw the Griffin Tucker game last year it looked like Griffin was in slow motion. Unless they have improved in team speed even this Tucker team with bad play calling could beat them.

First of all, let’s get the facts correct. Posters like Todd Holcomb say things. It does not necessarily mean that they are true. The last visiting team to win a regular season game against Northside-Warner Robins was Robert E. Lee HS of Alabama on September 20, 1996. RE Lee beat Northside 16-7. It was not Peach County as Todd Hlcomb says, although he did his research which is rarely reliable when it comes to programs outside of metro Atlanta.

SportsFan, I know you are a big fan of Todd’s. However, I am growing tired of you guys constantly saying inaccurate things. Northside’s last regular season loss to a visiting team at McConnell-Talbert Stadium was to R.E. Lee (AL)

Finally, Northside has played many top tier programs over the past 5 years, 10 years, 15 years, and so on. To assume that the 2009 Lowndes County team is something different is borderline absurd. Nationally ranked programs from Warner Robins, Lowndes County, Valdosta, LaGrange, Camden County, and Parkview have faced the Eagles. This is life, annually, for Northside.

In Georgia, the home team of top tier programs generally has a significant advantage. If the 2008 Lowndes County team can not beat Grayson HS on the road, the Vikings should get mentally prepared for a different animal at the MAC against any Northside team. PERIOD!

For some strange reason, Vikings posters are asking for ENR. I am here. I anxiously look forward to yet another big game for our Northside Eagles. I was actually pretty excited about our big game at Valdosta a couple of weekends ago and Carver-Columbus the Friday before that. I love the way Conrad Nix schedules top opponents and our Region creates plenty of top teams.

I would like all posters to take a look at Lowndes County’s road track record. You can start with a couple of bookend playoff games. You can go back to 1997 when Lowndes County was undefeated, with the top ranked team in the state, and the top ranked defense in the state. That Lowndes County team got cracked at the MAC (McConnell-Talbert Stadium) by an below average 7-3 Northside team.

I will also point you to 2008 when Lowndes County was vying for a National Championship with the top athlete in the nation, a team that had not lost in years, one of the best defenses in the nation, and the top ranked team in the state. That team traveled to Grayson. That Viking team got cracked on the road.

Lowndes County has consistently played below expectations on the road against top flight teams in the state. I know that in Atlanta most of you outside of Grayson HS are unaware. Since we have played Lowndes for years (since the mid 1960s), most people in Middle and South Georgia now that Lowndes is very suspect on the road.

Expect the Viking road woes to continue Friday night at the MAC against a team that is the poster child for playing big at home in the state of Georgia. Go Eagles!

Go to the following website: http://www.northsidefootball.com. There you will see what is known around Warner Robins as “The Drive.” I will let AVikingFan, VikingDad, Todd Holcomb, and SportsFan31313, analyse “The Drive” for all the posters out there.

Just know that this is simply a visual of how challenging it is for even a superior team (Lowndes County was the best team in the state of Georgia in 1997) playing as a road team at McConnell-Talbert Stadium in Warner Robins, GA against the Northside Eagles. There is nothing in life that is impossible. This is America. However, it is borderline impossible to beat Northside-Warner Robins at the MAC during the regular season.

The last time a visiting team actually beat Northside, our nation was preparing to go the the polls to decide whether to re-elect Bill Clinton & Al Gore or put Bob Dole & Jack Kemp in the White House (R.I.P. Congressman Kemp). We have had 3 elections since then. Kids born in a couple years earlier are on high school teams now. It is almost a lifetime ago that a visitor beat Northside at the MAC in the regular season. Coupled with Lowndes County’s obvious road woes against good teams & their relatively soft schedule, I like Northside’s chances.

September of 1996 was a long, long time ago. Wake up all you Lowndes County bandwagon posters. Northside does not lose at the MAC. PERIOD! The Eagles have beaten 9-0 teams that were ranked #1 in the nation in that stadium. This is more of the same for the BIG BLUE!

Reeze, look at the Big Blue simply bullying those boys from Lowndes County. I am shocked at the level of disrespect that these posters are showing Northside. You would think that you could garner a little respect when you go well over a decade protecting your home field.

I don’t know what Region 1-AAAAA is going to do should our 10th and 11th graders pull it out. Practically the entire team will return for the 2010 season. It is really great to be a Northside Eagle!

There is a team in CLass AA that is on the rise. Jefferson County is 5-0 and are on a roll. They have one of the most talented backfields in the State with truly two quarterbacks that can easily throw for 1,000 yds this season. Jefferson County has fallen short the past two years in the 2nd Round but this is the year for the Warriors. If they can get the #1 seed out of Region 3-AA..its time for the DOME!

Lowndes County versus top tier teams (and/or ranked teams) on the road over the past five seasons or so:

2008: Grayson 17, Lowndes County 7 (Grayson, GA)

2006: Tift County 13, Lowndes County 3 (Tifton, GA)

2005: Ware County 28, Lowndes County 7 (Waycross, GA)…Ware County finished second to last in their AAAA region & lost in the 1st Round of the AAAA State playoffs. Of course, Lowndes County went on the win the State Championship in AAAAA the same season after getting kicked around in the Jungle in downtown Waycross. The AAAA Gators rolled over the best team in AAAAA (Lowndes Co. were the defending State Champions). That (AAAAA) Lowndes County team was playing on the road with a 19 game win streak.

2003: Camden County 21, Lowndes County 14 (St. Mary’s, GA)

Notice the Viking pattern, no wins. Can any Lowndes poster (or Peachtree Ridge’s number one cheerleader Todd Holcomb) tell me one game where Lowndes County has beaten a top ranked Georgia high school program on the road in recent years? Todd, do not try to get cute with the answer. Winning as the road team in the Georgia Dome does not count in this open discussion. I am talking about Lowndes County packing their team, band, and parents on a bus and traveling to another top ranked team’s stadium and winning.

I just named a few top teams that made quick work of the Vikings on the road. I started with Grayson beating Lowndes County so soundly that their players and coaches nearly lost their minds on the field. Remember how the Vikings went out in that classless manner last season? ROAD GAMES effect a team’s mental makeup. Lowndes is borderline unbeatable at Martin Stadium. Show me proof that Lowndes is the same Lowndes on the road.

Lowndes even struggled at Valdosta last season and the Wildcats were terrible!

EagleNationsrising,

Well I gave you more credit than you were suppose to have. I said that Northside Warner Robbins have not lost a game at home in McConnell Talbert Stadium since 1995. But you said in 1996 by Robert E Lee from Alabama. So I stand to be corrected.

I still don’t believe that Lowndes County will lose this Friday Night. But again, I stand to be corrected. One thing that I do know for sure…. That is this will be the most exciting the most watched, and listened to game this week.

I wont say points by either team, but I believe that it will be a close game. I just don’t believe that anyone will beat that Mammonth size Lowndes County Team.

Im hoping for a Northside win here but honestly i dont think its gonna happen. Northside barely beat valdosta and valdosta missed 4 field goals. Homefield advantage certainly helps but i dont think this year Northside can win. its a rebuilding year for them and its no disrespect to them if i have them losing to the #3 team in the nation

BEARMAN unless they transplanted rockets into those kids they are still slow!!! Also being ranked number 1 is meaningless. Tucker lost that last year after they got whipped by Marist and did not see it again until they steamroller almost every team after that and own the championship! Do you know how to turn off cap lock?

Okay Chip Saye,

I am looking forward to this week’s predictions. What do you predict to be the winner of the Lowndes County / Northside Warner Robbins game?

Northside at home in the regular season is easy since the turn of the century. Northside is unbeaten. That’s right. The Eagles are 35-0 against visiting team during the regular season since the 2000 season. The current streak sits at 50 straight regular season home wins against visiting teams at McConnell-Talbert Stadium. The MAC is clearly a house of horrors for any team visiting Warner Robins, GA!

Lowndes County has beaten no top tier programs on the road during the regular season over the same period of time. ZERO! Northside-Warner Robins is 112-12 (0.903) since 2000 playing top tier teams annually. Meanwhile, Lowndes County is 101-19 and rarely beats top tier teams on the road.

I am a little confused. Why exactly are Northside fans supposed to be intimidated? Oh yes, I get it Lowndes County beat Peachtree Ridge, an overrated metro Atlanta school, 51-17. My goodness, what was I thinking? You beat an Atlanta school and all of Warner Robins and Region 1-AAAAA is shaking. Give me a break!!!

Northside has proven our mettle on the field. No program in the larger classification program has won more this century. Guess what, Lowndes and AJC posters? Northside is not afraid. Northside even put a little reminder of just who we are on the Northside Eagle football website. We are not Peachtree Ridge!!!

Enjoy, “The Drive!” EAGLE HOME DOMINATION CONTINUES FRIDAY NIGHT, with a team full of 10th and 11th graders! I love it.

Bulldawg Bite: No offense is taken. This is a rebuilding year at Northside. You are simply telling the truth. A rebuilding year at Northside does not change the expectations of the program, which is to win a State Championship. :-) I would say the same about Lowndes County. When you lose the talent that the Vikings lost, it should be a rebuilding year. However, you saw what the Vikings did to Peachtree Ridge, who returned everyone, at Martin Stadium in Valdosta. Lowndes County (home team) – Peachtree Ridge (visiting team).

It would be flat out dishonest to say that Northside is that much better than Carver-Columbus (the score was 21-0 at the half). Carver traveled a long way and it took a little while for their great team to wake up. By the time, they got their sea legs under them the hammer was already dropped, the MAC was rocking, & the Big Blue Nation was feeling very good about our very young team. Read the articles about the Lowndes County-Peachtree Ridge game a few weeks ago. It was just the same. P-Ridge opened with a big kick return and started feeling good about themselves. 15 minutes later the game was over before P-Ridge could get their sea legs under them. That is a common road story in Georgia High School football, especially at a place like Warner Robins, GA and McConnell-Talbert Stadium.

The travel affects high school kids. It is no accident that Northside usually destroys very good teams at the MAC. See Miami’s Booker T. Washington last season. :-) See Carver-Columbus 3 weeks ago :-) , who is LOADED (as talented as any team in the entire state of Georgia – go to the national recruiting site like Rivals.com) and will probably run the table from this point forward. See Marist in the 2006 State Championship game when the White Buffalo was put down like a lame horse. :-) Northside destroys visiting teams. :-)

What should be the focus is Lowndes County’s struggles on the road. The slip up at Grayson last season is not their first. There is a pattern of losing on the road with those guys. For some strange reason very few people are talking about that. Practically every good team beats Lowndes County when the Vikings go on the road. Valdosta is practically Florida. It is a long trip for those guys. It affects the outcome of big games. It is a very long day for 16-18 year old kid. They go to school, have pep rallies, get up, then go back down again with a long 2 hour bus ride, then have to try to get back up again. It is not easy.

Advantage…BIG ADVANTAGE: Northside-Warner Robins

EagleNationRising. You are wrong about two things. Lowndes beat a very good Camden team on the road in 2007 in the semis. And they beat a NSWR team in the dome in 1999 when NSWR committed the biggest flop of all time.

Your second mistake was in misquoting Todd Holcomb, the “STAT GERU”, who very carefully said the last GEORGIA ROAD TEAM to beat Northside was Peach County. In each of his articles when he brought it up he emphasized the last GEORGIA ROAD TEAM.

You and the lOWNDES poster who goes by the handle “GOOBER” need to compare stats. I think his are more comical than yours, but I’m glad you came back out of your hibernation, although it will probably for one week only.
