The Georgia High School Football Daily’s Weekend Predictions: Who’s winning and losing in Week Five

For the AJC

When you have a child in elementary school, you end up helping with and checking over a lot of math homework. I have to be on my game, because my fourth-grader is doing work that I didn’t have to do until high school.

This week, a lot of kids have missed time at school because of the rain and flooding. So to stay sharp, I’m looking at the picks from a mathematical perspective.

1>10: OK, so that’s not true mathematically. But it will be true tonight when No. 1-ranked Tucker proves that it’s a little bit better than No. 10 Marist. These teams took their rivalry, the state’s best between a public school and a private school, to new heights last year when they met in the Class AAAA championship game, which Tucker won 15-3. Marist won the regular-season meeting last season; Tucker returns the favor this time around.

7+13+35+12=67: That was West Laurens’ linescore last week in the Raiders’ 67-7 victory against previously unbeaten Telfair County, making them the highest-scoring team of the week. Tonight West Laurens travels to Baldwin with a chance to improve to 4-1 for the first time since 1996. Baldwin comes in at 2-2, but the losses have come against the No. 2 (Peach County) and No. 4 (Carver-Columbus) teams in Class AAA. Baldwin holds West Laurens well below 67 points and emerges with a victory.

(48+62+49)/3=53 and (0+0+0)/3=0: Fitzgerald holds the distinction of having the state’s best offense (53 points per game) and best defense (0 points allowed). The Purple Hurricanes have beaten Irwin County 48-0, Hawkinsville 62-0 and Worth County 49-0. Tonight they open Region 1-AA play against a 2-1 Mitchell County team that is averaging 22 points per game. Even if Mitchell County somehow scores that many against Fitzgerald, it won’t be nearly enough. Fitzgerald begins region play with a victory. For the record, Lakeside-Evans is the state’s other team that has not given up a point.

(7+0+0+0)/4=1.75: On the other end of the scale is Columbia, which is the state’s lowest-scoring team with an average of 1.75 per game. The Eagles lost to Lakeside-DeKalb 21-7 in the opener and have not scored since, being outscored 120-0. Fortunately for the Eagles, they have the week off before getting back to work next week against Towers (sneak preview – I’ll be going with the Titans).

23+1=24: Lowndes has the state’s longest active regular-season winning streak at 23 games. The Vikings’ last loss came against Harrison, 9-0 in the 2007 opener. Look for them to add one to the streak tonight against a 1-3 Tift County team that has won only once in the past 14 meetings in the series.

35+0=35: Butler has the state’s longest current losing streak, at 35 games, but that streak will be on hold for now as the Bulldogs have the week off. That leaves the spotlight on Cross Keys, which is second with a 31-game losing streak. That number will go up when the Indians get beat by Lovett (extra credit: 31+1=32).

As always, my picks for all the games are listed below. This week, however, I have not broken them down into Friday and Saturday games because last-minute postponements related to the weather could change the weekend schedule.

Last week: 125-24 (.839); Overall: 524-151 (.776)

Etowah, class program up there, beat the wOOD out of em. Wolverine Fam seems pretty stuck on himself. Should be a good game EP and Etowah, was last year. Wolverine Fan, congrats on last year’s playoff run. Your 4th place this year won’t work out so well! May have to try a little Grayson this year? Watch out for Pemberton….he’s fast.

Lowndes do not have the longest active winning streak in the state that would be the Newnan Cougars with 27 or 28 regular season thank you

AJC got all region 6AAAA predictions right except one. How do you all think Lakeside will beat Chamblee? I think some Lakeside Alumni must work at AJC for them to be getting all this press in one week. Tell you what, send a photographer and reporter to their game in two weeks.

Sorry Calvin but Lowndes “do” have the longest active regular-season winning streak by one week over Newnan. Newnan lost to Carrollton back on 9/7/2007 which is the starting week of Lowndes current regular-season winning streak.

Chip. I agree with your picks slightly more than I do with Todd’s. I’m with you on the Burke/Brunswick and Colquitt/Coffee games. But I think both of you are wrong on Parkview/Grayson. I predict a BIG ORANGE UPSET in that one.

Calvin, Todd Holcomb the stat geru wrote in a recent column that Lowndes does indeed have the longest regular season winning streak in Georgia. It was of course “BUFORD UNIVERSITY” until Lovett got the best of’em a few weeks ago and sent their posters into hibernation.

Decatur is going to make some noise this weekend. Everyone seems to thing that they are fluking. This is a team led by 22 seniors. All 11 defensive starters are back to a team that was 0-0 going into halftime with Buford last year. I know football can be a tale of two halves. However, this Decatur squad can be competitive for four quarters and shock people with the outcomes. I have great respect for Buford and Coach Simpsons accomplishments. But, don’t think this is going to be a mauling by any means. Get’em DAWGS

CHIP, let TODD know that AAA Burke County is still erasing AAAA teams from the rankings. Add Brunswick with Statesboro, and Ware County. The score was 36-18 with about 5 seconds left. Burke been started switching out players. Recognize what it is, the Bears is the real deal. At 4-0 Burke tackles the toughest schedule in 3-AAA. Its all good cause it only made Burke tougher. Region 3-AAA ready or not the Bears are coming expect NO mercy. SCHEDULE 2009 Schedule
Date Team Time Score
Aug 28 at Effingham Co. 7:30 pm W 39-21
Sep 4 WARE COUNTY W 19-14
Sep 11 at Statesboro W 35-17
Sep 25 BRUNSWICK W 36-26
Oct 2 BALDWIN 7:30 pm –
Oct 9 at Richmond Hill –

Oct 30 THOMSON –
Nov 6 at West Laurens 7:30 pm

VikingDad: Northside by 14 over Houston County. What don’t you guys understand about Northside-Warner Robins in McConnell-Talbert Stadium. OK, I get it. You were predicting that Northside would be up by 14 at the half. Right? Northside 42, Houston County 7. The Eagles will not be competed against in that stadium. Get that through your heads!

By the way, will someone please put Valdosta on “Alert” for their contest at McConnell-Talbert Stadium against Warner Robins. I expect the Big Red fans to come from out of hiding and really get behind Warner Robins. Expect 12,000+ tonight.

You might be correct. But don’t talk so fast. You still have Washington County, Baldwin County and Thompson to go. Those three will be interesting….

Collins Hill EAGLES

September 26th, 2009
3:34 pm

Come on….Collins Hill EAGLES are 5 & 0 and unranked….wish someone out there in ranking land knew their football! Charles Perkins has over 1,000 yards through the first five wins. How many other schools have a back that has done that this season?

September 26th, 2009
4:21 pm

Collins Hill Eagles,

Your team is doing fine but it will take a lot more than 5 wins to get you into the rankings. What is Collins Hill win loss history? How many Region Title do they have in the last 3 years? Have they beaten Peachtree Ridge or North Gwinette in the past 3 three years? If you have / can done / do that, you will have an argument. But I don’t see them beating Peachtree Ridge or North Gwinette this year.

September 26th, 2009
6:54 pm

Collins hill lucked out they dont have to get beat this year by north gwinnett, charles perkins is sick though. all three suwanee teams should be 1,2,3 in region though! :) I think Collins hill should be ranked over camden this week.

Who said valdosta would lose by ten. Final score valdosta 14 warner robbins 7. The only team valdosta will lose to is lowndes, and that will only be by a touchdown. They should have beaten NSR. I have 100 bucks NSR want make it to Dome!!!!

Everyone just keeps doubting Our Lady of Mercy. But they keep winning, and their 4-0.
