Georgia High School Football Daily Spotlight: Most improved state and metro teams from 2008 to 2009

It’s almost midseason, enough time to recognize that some teams are much better than they were in 2008. Rather than risk our bias on selecting the most improved teams, the GHSF Daily staff decided to take a scientific approach. We asked Loren Maxwell, who does the Maxwell Computer Ratings, to compare teams from 2008 and 2009 and give us a list of the most improved.

First, a little explanation. We’re going to have two kinds of most-improved. The first is for teams that were below .500 last season. The other is for teams .500 or better. Why? It’s easier to improve on a bad team, and we want to recognize both kinds of improvement.

We’re not giving you the complete computer breakdown, as Maxwell actually quantifies how much better (or worse) each team is. Lowndes, for example, is 8.28 points better than last season.

Congratulations to these teams that appear to be much improved in 2009:

Same old Lakeside if you watch their film from this year. 2 and 2 and beat Columbia and N. Springs? What about the two losses to SWD and Tucker? They got creamed those two games. Two weeks from friday will expose Lakeside for who they really are if they are not exposed this week. Stone Mountain JV beat their JV 66-0 I heard and they are one of the most improved programs? Lets get real.

Without a doubt McEachern is one of the most improved from last year, after beating our Raiders last week, unless they really have a couple of suprise upsets they should end up as the 5A-AAAAA Region Champions this year.

REGION 6AAAA – Last year was a BIG mess for Lakeside and if you were at the STMTM-LAKESIDE game last year, you know that first hand. There has been a big improvement at the school outside of wins and losses – just attitude and confidence. Please don’t mistake our parents and fans passion for the school and team. I believe that it is still widely recognized that Lakeside is not a powerhouse right now – I AGREE with that. But, Lakeside is up and coming (again) and is not the mess that it was last year. As for the JV – the coaches at Lakeside better start investing time in their near future, or they will risk slipping back into the dark hole that they were in last year, BUT this article really wasn’t about the JV, 9th grade, feeder middle schools, area park leagues, local flag football, etc. WAS IT?

Dekalbfootball – good program at Marist, maybe it’s your year to win it (or maybe NOT – think TUCKER). Not sure what you get out of making your comments (show some class). The article is about Most Improved – not Most Likely to Win State. Get a grip. Every week, I just look for improvement with the team – attitude, mental, and physical strength. Honestly, whether we score on Marist or not, there has still been major improvement at Lakeside this year.

Go VIKINGS!

Don’t let your 2-2 record fool YOU!! You guys haven’t shown us anything. Sure, you have improved from last year, but you are still getting your heads handed to you as evident in your two loses this year. As for us losing to Marist, well early mistakes did us in. We didn’t give up. Guess what? St. Pius and Stone Mountain are the only teams to score on them this far in the season. Will your guys be able to? Probably not, but hey even the sun shines on the butt of a viking every now and then.

You guys made a big mistake scheduling Stone Mountain for your homecoming. Lol!

Just for the record, we did beat Miller Grove. They are not as bad as their record indicates. They pretty much shut down Tucker’s run game and lost because of turnovers and a couple of rare passing touchdowns. We had over 200 yards rushing against them. What will you show us in the coming weeks?

Im not being disrespectful anotherviking, I did not even mention nothing about a state title game. I was responding to the commment made about how Marist beat Stone Mountain. Stone Mountain has made great strides in their new program, and so has Lakeside. SO if you want to say someone is not classy talk to you other lakeside blogger. Im a dekalb product and dekalb football took me through college on a football scholarship and beyond, I want all teams in dekalb to do good and improve just to get that clear.

I was at the SM/Lakeside game last year and it was one of your wannabe “Thugs” at one of Georgia’s best academic schools who started the fight. Thats ok though because we remember all of that, just like our JV did this year……..

Lakeside has definitely improved from last year and if certain teams are not careful, Lakeside may prove to be a spoiler for some unfortunate team.

Lakeside has definitely improved from last year and there wont be many teams beat Tucker or SWD this year. Look out, if someone is not careful, Lakeside could play the role of spoiler this year.

Marist, Tucker game should be hard fought. Look for the upset this week. I believe Tucker is faster and more explosive but I think the disciplined play of Marist wont leave much margin for error on Tuckers part. Marist in an upset in this game. Tucker will bounce back and be ready come playoff time but Marist too solid at this point in the season.

Has anybody seen a Fayette County High School game this season? If so, i’m sure you will agree that they are much improved over last year. They are 2-2 and they beat a AAAAA team, Luella. Now they can set their sites on the region. Look out Sandy Creek.
