Lowndes is the No. 1-ranked team in the state’s largest division (Class AAAAA). But which big metro school is the best?
Grayson is No. 2, and appears in many national polls, along with Lowndes. Grayson got a scare from South Gwinnett in a 27-16 win on Friday. North Gwinnett is probably the next best thing, and not yet is much known about Stephenson or M.L. King.
You could also throw McEachern, Peachtree Ridge, Newnan, Collins Hill and Parkview in the mix. It’s early in the season, and a lot of things are likely to happen before playoff passes are handed out.
Who is your pick for the metro’s best Class AAAAA team? State your team and your case below.

The Biggest & Baddest in the Metro Area would be Grayson followed by Peachtree Ridge. That is only the Metro Area.
But for the State would be Region 1 -AAAAA. South Georgia Teams are the Biggest, Baddest and the Meanest.

I seen Grayson play and i know that Stephenson will beat the breaks off them…they run like 4 plays the whole game after one drive if they scored on Stephenson they would not score anymore…we to fast and just as big and there aint nothing but head hunters on deffense… But i would say N.Gwinnett, Stephenson, MLK, McEachern,Grayson and are the 5 best teams in no order…well i would put Stephenson just because thats my team!

Evidently, the AJC don’t consider Newnan metro Atlanta. That’s ok. You have North Gwinnett who couldn’t muster up nothing but a field goal on us last year with an all state qb and rb.I can’t see how they’re ranked ahead of us this year but time will tell. Newnan will be there in the end and we’ll get our respect.

Team I hope Grayson does not play early in playoffs. North Gwinnett, they run the spread that Grayson would have fits with as seen with South Gwinnett. Not saying it would be a loss but I would not bet money on that game. So Metro Atlanta I say Tie between Grayson and North Gwinnett. Grayson has ball controll and North Gwinnett has balance. Once Grayson squeaks past Parkview they have time to get strong for playoffs. But any given Friday a team could lose. Ask Buford. Stephenson has the best athletes but poor coaching. Sorry, but they will not make it far in playoffs. I am fan of the players though. Very awsome to watch.

Grayson should be the number one team…but south gwinnett earned alot of respect against that grayson defense that is so highly talked about. Lowndes is very overated and no way should they be over grayson in the rankings..neither team lost alot of players so there is no exuses when it comes to that………ian pemberton is a 5′4 superstar that colleges should be looking at….

The jury is still out on Grayson. Their defense is impressive, but that’s it. McEachern has no defense. I say North Gwinnett has the most complete squad in the metro area.

North Gwinnett, yes, Grayson, yes, Newnan, yes, Collins Hill & Parkview, no, not yet. Peachtree Ridge, maybe, beat Collins Hill & North Gwinnett, possibly, Stephenson/MLK winner, yes.

I ‘m a big HS Football fan/critic–However, I won the first ever HS Football challenge a couple of years. I picked the winner of the State Champion in AAAAA. I just call them like I see it; Lowdnes will win it all again this year but, Stephenson/MLK will finally make to the final dance if they are not put into the same bracket with Lowdnes.. Grayson and Peachtree Ridge has an awesome program but overrated; look what Lowdnes did to Peachtree Ridge. I believe that the talent in Gwinnett County teams is suited for Gwinnett but they simply can’t compete on the level with the Lowdnes, MLK, Stephenson, and Camden county. And that’s the truth, RUTH!!! Lol.

SouthGARules. Stephenson and MLK have only played AAA and 1 AAAA school. Let’s see them play some AAAAA schools before we anoint them the teams to beat. They have done nothing to deserve to be ranked so high or get all of the hype but have the NAMES people like to hear. After we have played them both, then I will make sure I find you on a blog and bring this back up to you again.

M.L.K. has a lot of new, young, and fresh talent. Especially ninth graders Joshua Outlaw and Julian Williams both are underclassmen to watch. Big Josh #79 is opening the hole and make a way for touchdowns. At 6′4 and 245 he is something to wreckon with. Who can stand to block and hold up against Julian #71. He is 6′5 280 size 20 shoe. These guys still have a lot of growing to do. Both of these guys are young and posses major talent. M.L.K. will surprise alot of fans this year.

Roswell should already be in the lower part of the top 10, maybe 8, 9 or 10. They have 3 winnable games comiung up before having to play big-boy football against region rivals lassiter and walton. They should beat milton this year at home because they are a better team plus the revenge factor from a dramatic loss to them last season on thier field. A 4-0 start is good and should merit consideration in the top 10. Go hornets !

The Grove: Stephenson & MLK are known teams. MLK has played a much tougher schedule than Union Grove. MLK has played a AAAAA North Cobb & AAAA ranked SWD. Stephenson has played Ware County, a AAAA school that has played one of the 5 toughest schedules in the state. If you beat MLK & Stephenson, great. I will be here so you can tell me about it.
However, I feel Union Grove will go 8-2 & lose to Stephenson & MLK & be a 3 seed in Region 2-AAAAA.

It’s too soon to tell who is the biggest or baddest in the Metro. The Ridge, North G, Grayson and Newnan are definetly in the running. Lowndes is Lowndes. We all know they are the baddest down south. I dont know enough about the Grove, MLK or Stephenson to have an opinion. My gut tells me it will come down to coaching. Bullet Bob at North G is the best at out coaching any team and making half time adjustments that results in wins. In the end, I see Lowndes and Grayson squaring off in the dome.

listen here all you non-believers…grayson is the powerhouse of the state of georgia and thats all there is to it. their defense is unbelievable and has only let up 2 touchdowns in the first 4 games of the season. not to mention that grayson put down over 300 yards of offense against south and held the ball for 33 minutes of the game…yeah there are teams that can score quickly and put up a touchdown here and there, but no one can control the ball like grayson. oh and one more thing…south scored an average of 49 points in every game throughout their first 3 games of the season and the rams defense held them to 16….what does that tell you? grayson will be in the state championship, period. they are THE powerhouse of metro atlanta and they are unstoppable…im calling it right now, a perfect 15-0 season for grayson. watch it. the only team i see giving grayson a run for their money is 1-AAAAA powerhouse lowndes in the state championship. look at the brackets set up for the playoffs…when grayson wins the 8-AAAAA region title they practically guaranteed a trip to state. im just sayin…..

No question about north being a more balanced team so far. I went up to watch them play prattville and watch out for that quarterback hes like 6′4 and only a junior, he will go places one day. I think graysons best offense is yet to come and id say they have done pretty good with a tough schedule so far. I would not say lowndes is over rated to those people who think that they are insane! not unstoppable by any means but they are for sure the number 1 team thus far.

Also, the game friday against south didnt really prove that grayson could be beat by any team. It only proved that if you have a very high powered SPREAD offense you can give them some trouble. Lets be honest tho grayson could of scored once more at the end of the game and holding a team that averages 49 a game to only 16 has to be a sign that grayson is for real.

Stephenson brings back the same team with additions how can you compete. you need to settle in and get ready to play for third place in the region.

Joeschmoe: I agree Grayson might should be ranked ahead of Lowndes at this point in the season and until (and if) they play each other again. But in a way that’s giving credit to last year’s Grayson team, not to this year’s team. And both Lowndes and Grayson are different teams this year, and that’s what the rankings are for. Not what someone did last year. The way I see it, if both of those two teams keep winning they will flip to see who hosts the other in the 1/4 finals, just like last year. I don’t think there is any scario in which they can meet in the championship game if they are both undefeated. Home field advantage will be worth 7 points if they meet.
I see N. Gwinnett beating Grayson, and Peachtree Ridge beating NG. (You heard it here first!!!!) And Lowndes could lose to NSWR and/or to Valdosta. So let’s quit bickering about it and let Todd and Carvel do the prognostication!
BTW did ya’ll see Greg Reed’s interception and 63 yard TD for FSU Saturday? He’s got two picks already! First freshman to start for Mickey Andrew’s defense since Deon Sanders. Also, Number 90 for the Cowboys last night, Jay Ratliff from Lowndes, had a good game.

I read in one of the columns that standings are about win/loss and rankings are about how well they played. Given that, I think I am good with Grayson being number 2 right now. They have not been the near flawless team they were last season and yet they have mananged to pull wins out of some very impressive opponents! They have been a team of dichotomies this year. I guess we will have to keep on playing and see how the rest of the season goes.

wesleyan: If you think that Wesleyan would beat any 5A team in metro Atlanta, I don’t think so. Just because you won the A title last year, you think you’re something. How about trying to be Buford or GAC first, considering they both beat you the last 4 years. Of course dropping down in classification makes teams look better (see Warner Robins-2004), but considering that in AA you went 22-20-1 & 3 first round exits, let’s try your hand at AA teams before you call out AAAAA teams. Grayson, North Gwinnett, Peachtree Ridge, Parkview & Collins Hill would dust you off like nothing & that’s just Gwinnett schools It’s nice to have an opinion, but come with a dose of reality.

Walton isn’t a sleeper. They’re suppose to be good in the region. A sleeper would be Woodstock last year. As far as the power house team in metro..Thats tough. I mean we know the powerhouses in the regions. But as far as cross region powers thats tough to call cuz 5 doesn’t really play 7 or 8. I do think the Region 5 powerhouses this year would beat region 6’s.

Grayson Student: According to the playoff brackets this year, Grayson would not meet the Region 7-#2 seed until the semis & the Region 7-#1 seed in the finals. You would have a potential matchup with Newnan or Region 2 runnerup (Stephenson/MLK loser) in the quarters. This is going on the assumption (a very good one) that Grayson wins Region 8.

Ya i found the brackets and was looking at the first 2 potential matchups with region 5 and 6 in the first 2 rounds. No disrespect but north cobb and potentially walton or roswell would be fairly easy games. The way the brackets play out we would be lucky because it would eliminate lowndes/north gwinnett-ridge before we played them… This is all speculation but it is fun to think ahead. Im pretty worried about defending khalik barnes and the spread that parkview runs. Once we get by them i think its pretty safe to say grayson will be set for the playoffs, every week being a tune up

Many of you guys are funny. When the season started, the toast of metro Atlanta is Peachtree Ridge. P-Ridge is still the best team in metro Atlanta. I know that is a challenge for you Atlantans to get your arms around. At the end of the day, this is one of the worst big city high school football towns in America.
The best looking team is probably Stephenson. Of course, Stephenson is Stephenson. My guess is the Atlanta program that will be standing is P-Ridge. The beatdown in Valdosta has hurt their confidence. However, I expect their focus to improve and the reality check at Martin Stadium against Lowndes will make P-Ridge a better team in the long run.
Grayson deserves credit, but their offense will not get it done. North Gwinnett has done nothing. Beating an out of state team does not merit the hype surrounding these guys. I expect P-Ridge and Grayson to stand taller than North Gwinnett.
Guess what, P-Ridge, Grayson, North Gwinnett, Stephenson, or MLK would be lucky to finish in the top 4 in Region 1-AAAAA. You guys know it is true. Where are the East Paulding posters screaming about those overhyped guys in silver and black?

Grayson – That won’t be N Cobb in the fist round, probably Etowah or East, N Cobb should finish about 6th behind Harrison. ENR – Valdosta misses two field goals and decides not to try the third one so now you’re hot stuff. Same trash talk as last year when you had all 4 teams going to the semis after the first round, but none of them made it past round three, none, zero, nada. Are you any better than last year when Camden stomped you in the 2nd round? And Lowndes the pride and joy of your region got whipped so bad by Grayson they blew up and started a fight, which they also lost. Over-rated, over-rated.

He was told there would be no place for Benjie to play..Brookwood coaches please realize this…Benjie is not a quarterback. He doesn’t deserve to be on the football field. Anyway, the guys at Brookwood has beaten down, Parkview, Grayson, SG and every body else they have faced without Benjie being the quarterback….remember the 7,8, 9 andd JV years.. No Benjie…now Benjie will have more losts on his record than any Brookwood QB, but I do believe that if Benjie learns how to treat the other players and humble himself and show some respect those guys will remember they are still the big dogs and win out… beating Grayson, SG and Parkview as they did in those other years…..coaches of Brookwood think about it…

1. Newnan 2. Grayson 3. N gwinnett 4. Union grove 5. Jaguars. Newnan has the best defense in Georgia with a lot of talented pieces on offense. Grayson has a good defense and solid running game. The bulldogs has maybe the best coach in Georgia. I think the jags has more talent than anyone in Georgia. But will fold on round2

im tired of the same old b.S. at stephenson. Coach gartrell and that weak a$$ coaching staff need to pick it up. The defense is strong until they play teams where the coaches have to make in game changes (THEY CANT). The best players need to play on both s ides of the ball (THEY DONT). Stop being so bias and stop playing #21 and #6!!!! and you guys need to put coach sellers sorry a$$ son on the BENCH! The jaguars are the number 2 team in ga behind us (MLK).THEY JUST BE READY FOR THE MACK TRUCK ON 0CT 16TH!!!!

reality: Are you saying that politics are at work in the Bronco Nation? Is Benjie’s daddy a big money contributor? I was told that the reason the 2000 starting QB got the job was “allegedly” his daddy was a big financial booster to the program. Not saying its true, but makes you wonder.

mlk & stephenson fans, we know the rivalry is heated and trash talk happens, but both teams need to focus on the fact that neither team is respected throughout the state. Quit all the damn infighting amongst family and do the damn thing on the field. Make it past the 3rd round and shut some folks up!!! Oct 16th is just one game out of the 16 it takes to bring home a championship, yeah you get region bragging rights-that means nada come December!

Get a GRIP…go back and REREAD your post!…You are calling the most liberal newspaper in the SouthEast RACIST…You couldn’t be more wrong…The AJC gives much more coverage to football (and everything else) INSIDE 285 (along with Cobb & Gwinnet)t than they do ANYWHERE else in the state. They almost totally ignore Northwest Ga teams and have all but abandoned Paulding County / West as far as coverage. Yes they give East Paulding some print but ONLY because they are forced to as East plays the COBB County teams they do cover!
The AJC raised the cost of the paper to $ 1.00 daily and pulled out of most the counties except Fulton, Dekalb, Cobb & Gwinnett when it comes to coverage, so your comments are way off base. If you are not getting the coverage you want perhaps it is because of the QUALITY of play or the teams the schools you refer to are fielding…Just a thought!

WOW, talking a little smack makes the season fun but some of you are taking it too far. One thing that we should all be proud of is that GEORGIA as a whole produces some top quality football players which speaks volumes for our Coaches and parents that get involved. Stephenson and MLK both have very good teams BUT so does UG. Yes Union Grove was 7-0 last year when they lost but they played without their starting tailback who will be back this week. Pre-season games don’t mean alot but the Vigor Alabama game was great. Those kids from Vigor are HUGE and by the way Vigor is crushing their opponents this year and ranked #1 again. Send their Coach and email and ask him what he thinks of UG. I do agree with SouthGA lets just wait until we play and we will all know. I do think we should keep this post about football and leave the racism out of it. Stephenson and MLK i will tell you that the actual Union Grove players have respect for you guys.

Kudos to EagleNationRising and AVikingFan for giving Peachtree Ridge credit as the best team in Metro Atlanta. I will say though, i think PRHS would finish in the top 4 in Region 1 As would Grayson (Unsure about N.Gwinnett). They are definitely not a shoe in to win the region, but I think They would at least finish in the top 4. I still feel that PRHS gave itself a bad rap when we played like crap against Lowndes, I mean, had we played our best the game would’ve been MUCH MUCH closer. But I hope we can redeem ourselves. And if Lowndes and PRHS both finish #1 in their region, we would face off in the third round of the playoffs. I’d really like to see Lowndes come up to Suwanee this time, as it would definitely take some of Lowndes advantage away. (Martin Stadium/Concrete Palace is such a hard atmosphere to play in as the enemy). Again, thank you to all the South GA guys who give PRHS some credit.

Jags has the most talent in the State period. AJC always hate on Dekalb. true they do Metro Atlanta, but all they do is white teams in gwinnet county (North Gwinnet, Grayson, Brookwood) THEY ALL SUCK!! we saw what happened 2005 when Parkview played some real boys (Stephenson) in the playoffs Marcus Ball layed the wood to Caleb King all night and jags came out victorious so I think Stephenson should get more respect than they do.

The AJC only did that because of the financial crunch that everyone is in. It cost more to make the paper and send it out of the city than what they were getting from doing so. Thats why they did that and why would you complain about them covering the metro Atlanta schools more that the schools outside the perimeter. It is called the Atlanta Journal and Counstitution not the Georgia Journal and Constitution.

Eagles Nation Rising,
I agree with you. But my Top two is Grayson followed by Peachtree Ridge those to teams will Dominate North Georgia in Class AAAAA or any Class in Metro Atlanta. But that is as far as it goes…. The question was who is the baddest football in the Metro Area, and I gave you my answer. Anyone beg to differ?
But the Baddset Football team an any Class is South Georgia’s Region 1-AAAAA Lowndes County this year.

I believe there is a good chance that lowndes couldnt beat any of the #1 seeds from the metro area if they were on the road (besides region 6). The biggest baddest teams in the metro area have to be grayson, NG, PTR, and maybe Mceachern? If you count newnan as metro-atlanta they have to be on that list. these south GA teams are over rated because their fans talk them up to be all-world

Bulldawgbite,
I’m sorry to have to tell you but I NEVER said it. I ALWAYS stated last year that 2008 Region 3-AAAAA Perinnial Power Camden County (South Georgia) will be the undisputed Class AAAAA State Champions. I also said that no one in the State would beat Camden County no matter who it was. If you don’t believe me, ask some of the bloggers that was on here last year such
EagleNationRising, Reeze, Yo, AVIKINFAN, ACAMDENFAN, Camdenwildcat, and even Sports Writer and Editor Todd Holcomb. I was right. they became the undisputed Class AAAAA State Champions.
Now I am saying this year, that Lowndes County will be. The reason being is that….
1. That Lowndes County Team is a Mammonth size team.
2. That Lowndes County Team is Fast on both sides of the ball.
3. That Lowndes County team (Defense) is very physical and they bit hard.
4. That Lowndes County team is playing with a lot of emotion.
5. That Lowndes County team had to carry that embarrassing upset / loss on their shoulders for one year handed to them by Grayson. Remember?
6. That Lowndes County Team taking that lost was tough pill for them to swallow.
You can rest, and assure that the Lowndes County Team of this year, is better than the Lowndes County team of last year. They walking softly and carrying a big stick. They are destroying ever team they have faced this year, including your North Georgia Teams. Remember Woodland of Stockbridge this year? Ask some of these other North Georgia fan. Maybe they can share their thoughts of that brutal punishing game they got from Lowndes County. How about the fans of Peachtree Ridge, and I like Peachtree Ridge. Bottom line is that no team in the State will beat this ferocious Lowndes County Monster of a team this year. Mark my words….

When I compare North Georgia football to South Georgia football I look at 2 key machups. I see Colquitt County driving 3 and a half hours up to Lassiter and beating them handedly in their scimmage match (most of you have over-looked this obviously). And I look at Lowndes laying the pine to PRHS. Both of these games make the statement that, yes the leagues ya’ll have in North Georgia are nice, but every once and a while some team from 1-AAAAA has to come and remind you where the real football is played.

Sportsfan,
I have no doubt Lowndes is a good team. the things i have heard from several ptree ridge fans is that the passing game isnt particularly strong and that they rely on the big play. Their defense is always staunch and hard to do anything against. If they win the state title this year i will give you credit but playoffs is a long way away. region 7 and region 1 #1 seeds play in the 3rd round this year… I think the two toughest regions will play a good game that night (with region one as the deeper region) and will be a rematch of the 07 final or the ptr game earlier this season. btw NG still has ptr at the end of the season. and I hear Lowndes goes to Northside this week. do you think the Northside game will be close?
