The Georgia High School Football Daily’s Weekend Predictions: Who’s winning and losing in Week Three

By CHIP SAYE
For the AJC

Picking the winners of high school football games can be easy a lot of the time. Even an occasional upset can be spotted a mile away. Other times, teams appear pretty even on paper, so you have to go one way or the other. Sometimes you’re right, sometimes you’re wrong, and you don’t worry about the misses. Then there are the frustrating times, when the teams defy all logic. Play poorly against a weak team one week, pound on a good team the next.

It’s not going to be easy for me to put up a good score from week to week if the teams won’t cooperate and play the games correctly. And here are some of the prime offenders so far:

Whitefield Academy: Whitefield, 10-2 in 2008, lost its opener to a Walker team that went 2-8 in 2008. So the Wolfpack had no chance against Athens Academy, which has won at least 10 games in four of the past five seasons, right? Wrong. The Wolfpack beat Athens Academy 21-15. This week, while Whitefield Academy is beating Southwest Atlanta Christian, Athens Academy plays at Walker. It doesn’t seem logical, so I’ll go with Athens Academy.

Woodland-Stockbridge: Woodland lost to Lowndes 75-14 in the opener. So few would have thought the Wolfpack would win last week when it traveled to Worth County, which won its opener 39-0. Woodland then went out and beat the odds as well as Worth, 31-13, to establish itself as a playoff contender in Region 4-AAA. The Wolfpack will beat Spalding tonight. (And Peachtree Ridge would tell you that Lowndes really is that good.)

Towers: The Titans were 1-9 last year. North Atlanta went 5-5 in 2008 and won by 20 in its season-opener. You can probably guess where this is going. Towers rolls over North Atlanta 49-18. And because the other six teams in its subregion are a combined 1-11, there’s no reason to believe Towers can’t win more. It just won’t be this week, as the Titans lose big to Grady.

Lakeside-DeKalb: The Vikings end a 14-game losing streak with a 21-7 victory in their opener against a down Columbia team, and they receive votes in a couple of the statewide polls the following week. How does that happen? Tucker wasn’t as impressed, beating the Vikings 60-27 last week. Perhaps the voters got this Lakeside confused with Lakeside-Evans, which upset Evans 17-0 last Friday. I haven’t picked the Vikings to win yet, so I’ll keep that up until I’m convinced otherwise and go with North Springs this week.

Elsewhere
● There are not a lot of high-profile games around the state tonight, but a few of the matchups are good ones. Take Buford, as always, but expect Lovett to score this time.
● Northside-Warner Robins, No. 6 in Class AAAAA, knocks off Carver-Columbus, No. 1 in AAA.
● Defending Class A champ Wesleyan beats Holy Innocents’.
● Go with Class AAA No. 5 Peach County against No. 4 Baldwin.
● Burke County has impressed in its first two games, but the Bears likely won’t have enough to take down Statesboro.
● Class A No. 2 Wilcox County beats No. 4 Wilkinson County, but in a closer game than their 30-14 meeting last year.

You actually think that Douglass has a chance against the Bulldogs? The cubboards are bare at Douglass and look for another coaching change after the season. Smith is playing all over the field and will face double and triple teams all season.

CHIP, you still wants to think Burke County is not ready for AAAA teams. Like I said last week, “Burke County will defeat (AAAA)Ware County” and did that. Now the Bears will defeat (AAAA)Statesboro in Statesboro. CHIP, you say “Burke County likely don’t have enough to take Statesboro down.” Note, several of Burke County key players didn’t play against (AAAA)Ware County cause of injuries. Maybe you need to attend this game and see that Burke County is loaded with weapons. Quarterback Terrell Brigham have plenty of support on the field, Statesboro will see. DO IT BEARS…….

Chip Saye, I disagree with one of your predictions:
With respect to the States Toughest Region (Region1-AAAAA) I don’t believe that Houston County will come down to Hinvesville, Georgia and beat Region 3-AAAAA Bradwell Institute this year.

“THE BONEYARD” heats up for the first home game this season as South Cobb visits our Raiders. That rumble South Cobb already hears is not thunder but CANNON fire! TICK…TICK…TICK…BOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!

With the season only starting I hate to look to far down the road but that road trip EAST takes the last week of the season ( Nov. 6th ) to Woodstock is looking like it might be REAL INTERESTING!!! But lets see what happens with the Woodstock / McEachern game tomorrow night as that will tell a lot about division 5A – AAAAA!!!

Chip, I’m glad to see you are doubting those boys over at Mays yet again. Maybe after Mays ‘upsets’ Whitewater to become the only undefeated team in Region 5AAAA, maybe then you and your staff will understand that Mays High is a force to be dealt with in AAAA. Stay tuned…………

I like the Forest Park Panthers in the upset over Mt Zion . The bulldogs come in off there blow out win over AAAAA Shiloh and underestimate the Panther PRIDE a new look team that is young with about 6 Sr playing with alot more depth than usual. Mt Zion maybe looking at the Panthers score at westside macon and just think they are push overs but they are far from it. It’s a new season, a new day , a new era for The PANTHER pride . Go PANTHERS ! ! ! Beat them bulldogs ! ! !

S. Cobb would love to catch ‘em sleeping. They won’t be looking ahead.

For what it’s worth, three of the games you guys have mentioned (Burke vs. Statesboro, Houston vs. Bradwell, and Whitewater vs. Mays) were some of the ones I struggled most with this week. I do think Burke County, in particular, is very good. If they beat Statesboro, I’m on board big-time. Wins by Mays and Bradwell wouldn’t surprise me one bit either. And I didn’t think Hiram would beat Washington, either.

If MAYS defense don’t stop trippin, we lose by 20 to WHITEWATER. Mario you picked the #5 so play like you deserve to were it. For all that don’t know, the #1,5,7,11,21,42,46,72,79,99 are sacred at MAYS. Meaning you going go out,you better show out!!!!!!!! OOOH!!! Acey, It game time !!!My fault, I watching utube. ACEY!!! I NEED SOME Straightn this Friday, It was there you drop the ball. Brandon, you came all the way from the muck(GLADES CENTRAL) but you not playing like you want it. You kill the SAT in 9th Grade, Play like you playing against PAHOKEE rest of year. We know you want go to U, but at 6′5 320 and killing sat and smartest person on team!!!You make the call. I don’t know why but every time Mays changes region there is team that hate Mays and , that Whitewater in 5-AAAA it was Tucker in 6-AAAA . The TE @ Whitewater say y’all be poppin at the Fayette Pavillion. HANDLE YOUR BUSINESS, Everbody want to be MAYS but they can’t.

MAY HIGH TIL I DIE

P.S Brandon why did you Walton instead coming to MAYS, imagine the wideout we would have this year with you. You 2nd string @ WALTON u was QB @ DOUG last year. Not to mention legacy at MAYS, You know f up don’t U, the guys still have love for you and GARRISON since y’all
didn’t come to the HILL!!!!!

I think Mc ceachern wins going away tonight against Woodstock, and hate that I have to root for Woodstock in this one. East beats a fiesty improved South Cobb team and Etowah bounces back big at home against an apparent down K Mountain. North Cobb in a mild upset of Harrison, and Cherokee loses heartbreaker to Marietta to extend losing streak.
My take on region 5AAAAA.

Ricardo, for the third consecutive week, you play a team that doesn’t even field a defense. Enjoy your 3-0 record over the 0-6 teams you’ve played. Reality sets in next week.

THEHILLISREAL appreciate the support for the former Astros’s QB, he is doing very well at Walton. He is starting at WR and returns punts and kicks for the Raiders. They will play the Campbell Spartans tonight at Campbell. Since Mays is playing Saturday, come out and see the young man in action or catch the highlights on High 5 Sports. Thanks again.

Pops – I agree with your assessment except that I don’t think McEachern wins going away. Woodstock has a stingy defense that will keep McEachern in check for most of the game, but in the end I think McEachern prevails in a low scoring, defensive battle, for most of the game. If McEachern wins going away as you predict… then EP should be very concerned especially since they won’t be at home in the Bone Yard next week when they have to visit McEachern!

Lots of HS Football in the Towne Lake area tonight with both Etowah and Woodstock playing at home less than a mile apart.

Nomo, I will see you at Grayson next week after South Gwinnett pulls off the biggest upset of the year. South’s 49 pts/game is no fluke. Their new QB is playing outstanding ball and they have playmakers with speed.

Greetings Chip Saye,

Out of the three you mentioned, Here is what I predict.

Statesboro over Burke County. Reason: Statesboro is very good on both sides of the ball. Statesboro is at home.

Whitewater over Mays. Mays is just impressive at the least.

Bradwell Institute over Houston County

Again, Bradwell Institute although Bradwell Institute has a young team and they are rebuilding, Defense is very good this year. Houston has a running game. Bradwell Institute defense will shut them down on the running game. In addition, I give the edge to Bradwell Institute because they are at home. I give it Bradwell Institute because of the home field advantage.

There you have it.

Those Etowah fans know their stuff. N Cobb will be mad enough after that MLK whipping to handle a very mediocre Hoya squad. I give Woodstock some chance at home but they’ll have to play well in all three phases as the MAC is dangerous on special teams too. Etowah didn’t cover their punter and it became 60 yards and six points. East is unproven and probably too small and too slow to win at the MAC next week, espcially since the GHSA won’t let us take the cannon on the road!

The Cannon Rules!

HeadEast…

I wish that McEachern / Woodstock game had fell on EAST bye week I would have loved to gone to see it. I don’t think last week was a fluke and I will be shocked if McEachern “crushes” Woodstock…Last year Woodstock came to “THE BONEYARD” and beat the Raiders…they are well coached and will be even tougher AT HOME…for McEachern to win they will have to play close to perfect all night. It may come down to a special team play from some of that “speed” we been hearing McEachern has this year.

EAST loyality aside if Harrison finishes above 500 this year it will be a a stroke of luck…the look of 5A-AAAAA has changes and you will hear a fan favorite all year….4th Quarter Raider Quarter!!!! as our Raiders finish off team after team on their march to the Division title!!!

TICK…TICK…TICK…BOOOOOOOOOM!!!!! GO RAIDERS!!!!!

CHIP, like I predicted (AAA)Burke County will defeat (AAAA)Statesboro in Statesboro. And the Bears did that, 35-17 even though Statesboro was trying everything to stop the Bears. Including Statesboro’s band playing while Burke was on their own 2 yard line. The officals played for Statesboro too, they acted like their glasses or contacts was home. Burke County was penalize for about a 100 yards, I wish you was a witness. CHIP, you said “Burke likely don’t have enough to take down Statesboro.” Note, Burke still have starters that haven’t played since week one. Remember, the ranking doesn’t mean nothing……..
