OK, HS football fans – let’s get the Week 3 talk started early. Doubts have been raised in some of our other blogs about just how mighty Peachtree Ridge and Grayson really are. Even Newnan was taken to task in another blog this week.
What’s up with that? It’s WEEK THREE. Have we really seen the best from any ranked teams yet?
You tell us. Go. This blog stays open all weekend long for YOU to talk high school football.

Yall don’t show no love to B.T. Washington HS since Branden Smith left. Yall thought Washington was a one man show? #6 Zack Wichett( don’t know if I spelled it right) Might be one of the top juniors in the nation. Plus don’t forget about Antonio Goodwin, Quadrel Forte and Garrison Glass they make plays too. Show the APS school some more love.

The 4 games you highlighted are probably not the best matchups to say the least. P’tree Ridge will put something on Northview that Ajax can’t take off. MLK will do the same to McNair and likewise Buford to Lovett. As far as Sequoyah-Hillgrove, I know nothing about either school. I believe McEachern-Woodstock is probably the best metro matchup this week. South Gwinnett names the score against Meadowcreek & the Grayson-Dacula tilt will NOT be decided on the final play of the game (as Dacula’s first 2 games were)
Would be interested in Carver-Columbus-NSWR game. Probably the best game in the state.

SportsFan31313 — You misunderstand. The games listed on this board are those we’ll have various writers covering Friday night. Michael Carvell isn’t previewing those games. He’ll just log on from the Peachtree Ridge game (unless lack of wi-fi prevents it, which can happen) and report from there and try to answer some fans’ questions.
The GHSF Daily staff is handling our previews this season and here are the 10 games for Week 3 that they’ve deemed those not to be missed. You’ll see that they cover both metro Atlanta and the State of Georgia.
We’d say it’s a pretty unbiased list. But you may feel differently. At any rate, your beef would be with the GHSF Daily staff, not Carvell.

I’ve gotta agree with my new southern brothers. Woodstock-McEachern and CC-NSWR are by far the top games in the state. I’m not sure about the NSWR game, but I know that the winner of the Wood-McE game is going to be favored to win the region. Just wish I could make it up to see it. Lowndes rocks! I’m with Reeze and the rest. Northview lost by 27 to Marietta so the Ridge game is a certain blowout. I know they don’t like to get too far OTP (outside the perimeter for our southern friends) but I think Woodstock is closer to downtown than Suwanee! I don’t really have a dog in this fight but I’ll pull for the Woodstock Woodys using my ABC (Anything But Cobb) approach. We non-Cobb teams have to stick together. Besides there’s something about the slim possibility of 9-0 EP at 9-0 Woodstock to end the season that I really like.

Greetings SouthGaRules,
I see that Chip Saye has picked Houston County over Bradwell Institute. I am a Bradwell Institute fan by far, but I am also a realist. I don’t think that Bradwell Institute has ever beaten Houston County, and I stand to be corrected if I am wrong. Bradwell Institute is a fairly young team with new players on a rebuilding year. However; this young inexperienced team is playing better than the team of last year. They are 2-0 this as compared to last year, Bradwell Institute went 0-2 the beginning of the season due to injuries at the beginning of last year’s season. But Bradwell Institute ended up with a strong come back winning 7 seven games in row losing only to the last regular season game to Region3-AAAAA Champions Camden County who went on to win the State Championship. Bradwell Institute Defense this year is very fast and physical, just like the teams from Region1-AAAAA. They are getting better every week. So this year, I am going to give the edge to Bradwell Institute because of their defense, and them having home field advantage. This will be a very hard hitting game. This game will be determine by defense.

The Cannon is loaded and ready for tomorrow night at “THE BONEYARD”, I am a bit curious about this years South Cobb team…they lost 14 / 6 to Campbell in their opener then BEAT Kennesaw Mountain 21 / 0 !!! Those type scores scare me a bit and I hope EAST is not looking past South Cobb to next weeks McEachern game.
and to “Wolverine2Blazer”…Regardless who wins the Woodstock / McEachern game tomorrow night the winner of that game WILL NOT be favored to win the division!!! BOTH of these teams still have to play EAST PAULDING’S RAIDERS…and our Raiders may be 9/0 going into that last week when we travel TO WOODSTOCK!!!
But the COUNTDOWN IS on for 5A-AAAAA and that noise South Cobb is hearing already IS NOT THUNDER…TICK…TICK…TICK…BOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

Has anyone scored a lot of points on Warner Robins yet? That is a stout defense. May say Grayson offense is down, but is it really? Lets watch and see if Warner Robins beats up offense this week and if Grayson puts up points on Dacula to determine things a bit more. What has been seen the last 2 weeks is Grayson’s defense dominating the other teams. Has South played a solid defense yet. I think not. With that defense Grayson is at least in the top 10 in the state.
I hope Camden changes the QB or they will get torn apart this week! They will really fall in the standings then.

Warner Robins keyed on Ean Pemberton all night. Grayson moved the ball between the 20’s all night, but missed FG’s & losing the ball on downs did not help. Grayson will be fine. I don’t see anyone beating them in regular season.

Hoya Chuck…
I wish that McEachern / Woodstock game had fell on EAST bye week I would have loved to gone to see it. I don’t think last week was a fluke and I will be shocked if McEachern “crushes” Woodstock…Last year Woodstock came to “THE BONEYARD” and beat the Raiders…they are well coached and will be even tougher AT HOME…for McEachern to win they will have to play close to perfect all night. It may come down to a special team play from some of that “speed” we been hearing McEachern has this year.
As far as Harrison “crushing” EAST…You forget SOOOOO easy how hard fought last years EAST / HARRISON game was. You saw EAST only one time and that night EAST BEAT ITSELF!!! You forget how “BEAT – UP” Harrison was in the weeks following the EAST game…Ya’ll LOST 2 of the next 3 games with players so bruised and banged up they needed weeks to recover from the beating they took from the EAST “D”!!! This year the Hoya “pups” come to “THE BONEYARD”…WELCOME TO REALITY!!!
EAST loyality aside if Harrison finishes above 500 this year it will be a a stroke of luck…the look of 5A-AAAAA has changes and you will hear a fan favorite all year….4th Quarter Raider Quarter!!!! as our Raiders finish off team after team on their march to the Division title!!!

Grayson is not over rated. They are a pretty good team. But I doubt that it could beat Lowndes County this year. It will be a toss up between Peachtree Ridge and Grayson. Peachtree Ridge beat them last year remember. Peachtree Ridge?????? I don’t know as of yet. They got blown away by Perinnial Power Lowndes County did’nt they? But out of all fairness, No one will beat Lowndes County This year. Those Plow Boys are too Big, too Fast, Too Physical. This Team is the Camden County Team of last year. What is it with the stupid cannons? Several high schools seem to be using them in the state. Hoya Chuck – You’re going below 500 tonight. You’ll probably rally the next two weeks but then Woodstock at home and EP and MAC on the road will put you sub 500 for the season. You beat EP last year because we self-destructed with a fumbled punt and Robbie G was great on O and D. This year you got nothing after the turnipseed kid and he’s not enough…no playoffs for you.

Wolverine Fan, do you think your boys will take the Indians to that wood shed tonight? Everyone talks about their play makers on offense and believe me, we were on the bad end of that last week. But it’s their defense that really impressed me. That big, strong experienced O-line of ours was dominated. The Wolverines aren’t exactly explosive on offense but your defense looks stout. I think we might see a 17-14 type game.

I guess it was started by that cheesy NFL team Tampa. We co-opted Tampa’s cheesy cannon and Oakland’s cheesy logo. Our opinion is that only teams named Raiders, Bucaneers, Pirates, etc should use a cannon. After all if the Hoya bulldog shot a cannon it would be totally senseless, and interfere with their excellent band. BTW, we have a band, the Raider Brigade, and they’re pretty good. Look for them to be playing in Lowndes later in the year!

HeadEast, is Lowndes having some type of band competition that the Raider Brigade will be attending? You folks still have a good football team but from what I am reading, you are not nearly as strong as last season on defense. You are definitely a believer, though. You have to be if you think you will go undefeated through region 5. I think MAC, Woodstock and even my Etowah boys have the ability to hang a loss on the Raiders. SportsFan31313, for what it is worth, Grayson beat themselves vs PTR last year. Four bad long snaps for field goals after a perfect season by the long snapper. The final drive before the end of the regulation, Grayson collected more penalty yardage than the previous two or three games combined. Any one of those things changes and Grayson is in the Dome instead of PTR. Having said that, Grayson made the most mistakes and PTR made fewer so they won and advanced.
For everyone talking about how Lowndes and others have scored X number of points and Grayson only 10-14, there is no doubt that Grayson has some work to do on offense. They have made mistakes that hopefully they have learned from. In the end though, the season record is measured in wins and losses and not the individual scores. At the end of the season it doesn’t matter if the defense won the game or the offense or both, only that they won. I think the Grayson offense is coming around and will score the points needed.
All I can really say for sure is that high school football rocks and is fun to watch.

carlos – We are smaller, slower, and untested and those three games are on the road so your assessment is very accurate. However, I like to talk smack until we actually lose and then I like to make excuses. I learned most of that from EagleNationRising! BTW, our band is required to be available every Friday through the state championships just in case. They support the team and schedule competitions on Saturdays unlike Milton whose band was away when we played them in the playoffs last year. I expect EP to be at Lowndes in the third round, but only if we lose the coin toss for home field!!!

Head East – I like your “spirit”… and both you and “Cannon” certainly appear to be chomping at the bit to get into the real action in the Region 5-AAAAA race with your first region test tonight. But, I wouldn’t be looking so far ahead to a 9-0 showdown with Woodstock in November. McEachern has surprised some folks (Etowah and Brookwood for sure!) and is red hot right now. Several have already said it… the winner of McEachern/Woodstock tonight will be the R5-AAAAA front runner (I predict McEachern). I think EP will definitely be in the race, but I would look no further than next week when EP has to visit McEachern.
Don’t forget you guys visit the Eagle’s Nest two weeks later. Etowah got their nose bloodied last week (maybe face smashed in is a better description), and has something to prove from here on out… here’s hoping it starts tonight with Kennesaw Mtn!

No question that the interesting game this week will be Camden vs Hoover, AL.
Is GA really that much better than Alabama? Or was North vs Prattville a fluke.
I sure wish some quality GA teams would take on a few of the highly rated FL teams. I just do not believe that Florida really has that many teams that are among the best in the nation. I’ll give credit to Byrnes, Prattville, and Hoover for being willing to see where they stack up versus teams outside of their respective states. If the Florida teams only play each other and a few “girls school for the blind”, that doesn’t prove diddly to me.
You also have to give credit to the Georgia teams who are willing to put some hard “non conference” opponents on their schedules: Lowndes, Camden, Grayson, P Ridge, and N Gwinnett. I have a lot more respect for teams who are willing to prove it on the field rather than only relying on their shrill fans and local sports writers. Even if you take a loss, you learn more in a game that is 14 – 10 than in a game that is 44 – 6.

I don’t know that much personally about Shaw. Just what one hears. I have seen all of Coffee’s games this year including their shellacking by Fitzgerald in the pre-season scrimmage. In Coffee’s defense, the first squads did not even start the Fitzgerald Scrimmage and Coach Eldridge puts no stock whatsoever in scrimmage scores. With that said, from what I saw, I think the Purple Hurricanes could go toe-to-toe with any team outside the top five in AAAAA and hold their own.
Coffee beat Ware county soundly in everything but the score. The Trojans had the game firmly in control until literally the last minute or so. Even so, a loss is a loss. Note that Ware is tied for 8th in the AAAA coaches poll.
The Coffee-Pierce game was used by Coach Eldridge as another lets-see-what-we’ve-got game. Coffee won handily and dominated as they should have. It was also the first start back from an injury for Coffee’s returning senior QB.
Coffee is hard-nosed and quick, executes well and has four Div 1 prospects as well as several other talented skill players. They are young, starting about 75% Sophmores and Juniors. They run what is in effect two QB sets and both can run and have good, accurate arms. Their offensive sets can be confusing for the defenses and having two QB’s in the offensive set offers a lot of options.
My gut feeling is that, as in years past, things are falling together at just the right time. Coffee should handle Shaw but, Shaw is Shaw. They always seem to wind up seeded.
I don’t know what to expect from Coffee when they hit the 1AAAAA schedule next week. I know they won’t be pushovers. They are awfully young though. That’s why this is all so much fun though. One just never can tell.

Coffee is young. They are starting about 75% sophmores and juniors. They took a thorough shellacking from Fitzgerald in the pre-season scrimmage but in Coffee’s defense the starting squads didn’t even start the game. Coach Eldridge puts no stock what-so-ever in pre-season scores. I’ll say this about the Purple Hurricanes though. I would bet money they could go toe-to-toe with anyone outside the top 5 in AAAAA.
Coffee had the Ware County game well in control until the very last minutes. The score did not reflect the game. A loss is a loss though. (Note that Ware county is tied for 8th in the Coaches Poll)
Coach Eldridge used the Pierce County game for anothe lets-see-what-we’ve-got game. Coffee won handily and was very impressive any time the staring squads were in. It was also the first start for Coffee’s returning seniot QB who had been out with an injury
Coffee runs a lot of offensive sets with two QB’s on the field. It makes for a lot of options offensively as both run and throw well. Coffee has 4 Div 1 prospects as well as some outstanding young skill players. They are fearless, fast and hard-nosed. Just need to get in some playing time for the younger guys.
Don’t know much about Shaw other than what you hear. My gut feeling is that things are falling together at just the right time for Coffee and they should handle Shaw without too much grief. Shaw is Shaw though. They always seem to wind up seeded

Hey TrojanDude – Next Coffee game you hit, make sure you send us some cool game photos. We’re not limited to posting pictures from metro ATL schools. Now you can just upload them, write your captions and they’ll be on our site right away. No worries about the double-post. It happens. Thanks for the info on Coffee and Shaw. Good to know b/c you never know who you may face in playoffs, eventually.
And if anyone wants to see a really cool, well-done tribute website, scroll up in the comments thread and check out the Briarcliff Barons website. We gave it a look earlier today and were impressed. Also, it got the old AJC newsroom debate started about why Georgia high schools nowadays pick such bland mascot names. Barons? That’s sharp. Why’s everyone got to be a wild animal or some variant of an NFL or Georgia college team? Where’s the creativity, y’all? Paging former AJC high schools writer and “Take 10″ scribe-in-chief Jeff Haws, who always had fiercely-held opinions on this subject.

Just can’t figure out Coach Eldridge sometimes. Coffee’s starters literally dominated Shaw through the first quarter. Coach immediately broke up the unit and began substituting 3-4-5 each play. Coffee played three QB’s in 1st half. Shaw held to literally no yardage other than a desperation pass as time ran out in the half.
Can’t help but sort of feel like you know what he’s doing in developing players and giving playing time. But, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a coach have the discipline to forget about the score and do it. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Game ends on running clock with Coffee emptying bench on substitutions and staying on the ground from the middle of 3rd QTR until game end.
The Coffee starting offense and defense were just dominating. 2nd and 3rd units looked good too.
Allright fellers. Next week the real stuff starts. 1AAAAA against 1AAAAA. I can speak for all Coffee fans when I say that Coach Eldridge has worried us to death using the pre-season scrimmage and the first three regular season games to prepare the Trojans for the real season. The scuffle for the 4 seeds in 1AAAAA.
Good luck to everyone except on those nights when you play the Trojans. Let’s all think good thoughts and say little prayers that all the young men make it through the upcoming confrontations with nothing more than bumps and bruises.

Houston County is hammering Bradwell Institute. Some of you guys lose sight that HoCo is a Warner Robins high school. The Bears may struggle to get over the hump of Northside-Warner Robins and Warner Robins. However, the HoCo Bears are far from a push over.
There is this wild belief that Valdosta is going to automatically reach the state playoffs. You guys from Valdosta can put it down in permanent marker, Northside-Warner Robins is going to the state playoffs. Lowndes County is going to the state playoffs. There will be 2 other programs. Assuming it is definitely Valdosta is short sighted.
Houston County, Warner Robins, & Colquitt County are going to battle Valdosta. You can bank on Tift County playing hard through region play and I doubt those kids from Coffee are going to roll over. Region 1-AAAAA is going to be a battle. I guarantee it.
Valdosta is in a “most win” situation. Home region loses are not the answer. The Wildcats lose next Friday, forget about reaching the state playoffs.

Nothside-WR did win tonight over number 1 in 3AAA, Carver of Columbus by 21-12. Carver is a “HUGE” physical team. I heard they had 6/7 D1 players but the one noticeable player was a running back named Crowell. He was tough to stop. The score may have been greater except for the 5 or 6 key fumbles NSWR made. This is a problem Coach Nix must fix. I wouldn’t wish for any team to play Carver more than once per year.

Went to the Collins Hill-Chattahoochee game tonight. In a wild affair, Collins Hill came back & held off Chattahoochee 35 to 33. Charles Perkins of Collins Hill had 25 carries for 134 yards & 3 TDS, but was upstaged by Chattahoochee QB Tim Byerly who ran and passed all over the Collins Hill D all night. Collins Hill led 14-0 early, but Chattahoochee scored 27 unanswered points to lead 27-14. Collins Hill then scored 21 unanswered to go up 35-27 with 2 minutes left in the game by running a Byerly INT back for a TD. Then, Byerly went 61 yds to pull Chattahoochee within 2 with just over a minute left. The 2 pt try failed & Collins Hill recovered the onside kick & ran out the clock. This was some of the best 7 bucks I spent.

I am disappointed that South Gwinnett only put up 49 on a wretched Meadowcreek team. This makes the third straight game South has scored 49 points. It will NOT happen next week against Grayson. But… Valdosta a sure thing? I think not. The battle, and it is going to be a battle my friend, for the 3rd and 4th seed in 1-AAAAA, (and maybe the 2nd Mr. Northside), is going to be a knock-down-drag-out to end all knock-down-drag-outs. With the exception of lowndes, I think what we’re looking at in 1-AAAAA is something that hasn’t been in this region in years.
Parity.
Plain and simple as that.
And not just any kind of parity. It’s a parity within the region, (And this is going to P*** off everyone outside 1-AAAAA), not a parity with other AAAAA regions around the state. I truly think 1-AAAAA is a notch above the rest of the state overall and I think It’s really going to show up in bracket play this year as long as we don’t beat each other to death during the regular season.
Just my thoughts. Mark my words though,,,,, and then give me hell in late November and early December if I’m wrong.

So our defense has yet to be scored on through game 3. That is pretty impressive, you got to admit. Camden did put up 10 points but it was a special teams blocked punt for TD & a lay-up field goal after the kick-off return that was fumbled @ the 20. Even on that score the Rams actually held for negative yardage.
Offense showed up tonight & the bag of tricks has gotten a little deeper & more diverse.
The team that I see as being a match for Grayson– North Gwinnett. If that happens, it will be deep in the playoffs & it will be a game.

You know, I agree we havent really played any seriously good teams yet. We get a chance next week though! Although it does hurt to put Lowndes up as the no. 1 seed from 1-AAAAA.. It’s true. And not being shortsighted.. but honestly I think the only teams that could put up a fight would be Lowndes and NSWR… Colquitt, Coffee, Warner Robins, and Houston?? Really? I dont know about that! However the year shapes up in the next few weeks. Gotta admit.. it will be pretty exciting!

Rams Fan I am impressed with your defense. Lowndes 1st string defense is yet to give up a touchdown either. They did give up a field goal against PTree, but that is all they have given up. The problem with Lowndes completely shutting people out is that the games are not usually close enough to keep the 1st String defense in the whole game so teams do score touchdowns on our 2nd and 3rd string defenses. Against Ware tonight the clock was non stop in the second half so the game was over in what seemed like record time. The second half took what seemed like less than 30 minutes total to play.

I knew that with the winning tradition at Valdosta that you knew the difference between a real game and a scrimmage, unlike some on this blog . Next week will be a good one between our schools, should be closer than last year…..I am glad the region games start next week…I think Colquitt will have something for Lowndes, not a win ,but I think Lowndes will see a much improved Colquitt…..Hoco will surprise Coffee……..WR will beat Tift…….and Northside defense will take the Cats out.

Brookwood Mom: I’m kind of surprised you & Coach are wanting to blow out your coaches. I did some research on ghsfha.com & pulled coaching records. Mark Crews is 70-20 (including 1-2 this season) with a winning pct of .777 since he took over for Dave Hunter. He had won 9 or more games for 6 years prior to last year. I know Dave Hunter is a legend at Brookwood with a record of 149-36 & a state title and built the program. Valdosta had a coach named Mike O’Brien who succeeded the legendary Nick Hyder. Coach O’Brien went 70-20-1 in seven years with a state title. His sin was he was not Nick Hyder.
Since Coach O’Brien was run out of Valdosta, the Wildcats have not won state & have had multiple coaches. Basically, I’m saying: Be careful what you wish for.

I’m here I do apologize for my lack of perception on my Panthers. We have never come out so flat in a region game in the last 9yrs that I have been supporting the Forest Park Panthers . I am embarrassed from the performance of tonight . I will say we are very young . Only 8 Seniors on this years team. We’ve got several soph. playing and it shows. Pray for us man that we get some heart. Because we made Mt. Zion look like westside macon or lowndes or somebody and they are not. same team we lost last year to like 15-14.

Mays vs Whitewater…was the best SORRY game I ever saw! Both teams are talented…but not very-well coached. MAYS–you are not disciplined at all…and your fundamentals are terrible! But thats not your fault…you only do what you do in practice. If you practice sorry…then you play sorry! You need A real coach who can coach!..WHITEWATER—you have great size on your team but its not being utilized what-so ever! Your skills-position are weak…the offense your trying to run does not fit this team! Had you been coached BETTER …this team would be A serious contender instead of A pretender!

What a great game, Wolverinefan not real sure about the whole safety thing, it appeared he was good to go from where i was sitting. But both teams made some crucial mistakes throughout the whole game, MHS just made less when it counted. Sure we are Happy about the win, but when it comes to a football game, that one was great. MHS was behind by 2 td’s plus some; most of the game and came from behind to tie it and win in OT. Looking forward to next week, but sure are glad we are at home.

I attended the Wilkinson Co. vs. Wilcox Co. game last night since it wasn’t to far from where I live. The GHSA needs to look into the officiating, at one time 10 flags in a row against Wilcox. This officiating crew no doubt wasn’t going to let Wilcox win. You couldn’t even enjoy the game due to the number of flags. I could go on for hours, but a team with this caliber of talent just doesn’t commit this many penalties.

McEachern wins what sounds like a close / tight fought game…I hope what some posted isn’t true and the refs didn’t cost Woodstock the game…from what I have heard to go into “THE WOOD” and come away with a win in HUGE!!! Congrats to the Indians!!
South Cobb barely loses to Campbell, then beats Kennesaw Mtn. in week two, wasn’t sure what to expect at “THE BONEYARD” last night but it was RAIDERS from the start and the backups got a LOT of play in a 36 / 0 RAIDERS victory!!! The Cannon got lots of “PLAY TIME” as it announced another Raider win all night long!!!
So now this coming week should be an exciting game as our RAIDERS travel to McEachern. I don’t see this one being a blow-out for either team, but the stands WILL BE FULL of RAIDER fans as this week 4 game will go a long way in determining the winner of 5A – AAAAA this year!!!

Westside-Macon, Mt Zion-Jonesboro, next week Griffin & then North Clayton & later on Dutchtown. i hope your guys keep fighting & don’t give up. i see that Rod Perrymond is coaching @ FP now. If I remember correctly, he was a star TB on the 1993 Dunwoody team that won state under David Kelly. Hopefully, he can build a good foundation for FP.

Hey, TROJAN DUDE. You are a complete liar when you say Coffee did nto start their “first squads” against Fitzgerald. I was at the cam and the only thing that rotated was the 2 qb’s. The starting lines really never came off the field. You people in Coffee have a tough time accepting you were physically manhandled two years in a row by a bunch of smaller, more disciplined players froma AA school. Yes it was a scrimmage but Fitzgerald was able to work and successfulybcapitilize on every facet of the game. That what that game is for. From what I saw, Coffee is not very good no matter what “squad” they put out there. How about just giing credit to a pretty good Fitzgerald team.

If you read any of three or four posts I wrote about the Purple Hurricanes you would know that I gave about the highest praise I could give the young men. You kicked our asses last year and this year. Go back and read where I stated that it was my belief that the Hurricanes could hold their own against any AAAAA team other than maybe the top five or so.
You were to quick to jump to the defensive when I was discussing the confusion all Coffee fans sometimes feel about how Coach Eldridge ignores the score in pre-season games and uses them to evaluate personell and capabilities. I NEVER said Coffee could have beaten Fitzgerald. I don’t think they could have back in August and I don’t think Coffee would beat The Hurricanes next week. Maybe…. But I myself don’t think so. Fitzgerald has on hell-of-a-team.

South Gwinnett has played sub par teams and hope to roll into this week doing the same. They come to Grayson’s stadium and will be stunned at how hard they will be hit. They have not played that level yet. But there will be hope for South Gwinnett after the Grayson game. They will learn how to play in a big game. It will carry them past teams in their region and they will make the playoffs. Brookwood may not make it if they do not pick it up soon because South Gwinnett will beat them. I am sold the only reason Grayson has not put up many points prior to this week is the caliber of defenses they have faced with Warner Robins and Camden. They still won!

This is a tough year for Thomas County Central. I had the same belief for Northside-WR but Coach Nix (as you told me) dug deep to find some JV’s that could play. They are cxoming around slowly but still need to reduce fumbling at the worst times. It looks like we are going back to AAAA. I must say you were right and I was wrong. Houston County came to Hinesville and hammered Bradwell Institute 33-14. Houston County disclosed Bradwell Institute’s weakness on field. Bradwell’s offensive line is very very young and inexperienced. They couldn’t get anything going. Now my thoughts are Houston County has gotten very good over the past two years and very well be a contender in Region 1-AAAAA or they hammered Bradwell on Bradwell’s turf over a very young and inexperienced team that was playing against a tough Houston County Region 1-AAAAA. nevertheless,, Great job Houston County on your convincing win against Bradwell. We will probably meet again in the post season depending on the seed.

Liberty County High in Region 3-AAA is getting some notice. They are 3-0 and have beaten at least a great McIntosh Academy team. Their strength of schedule is better than Bradwell Institute. They still to play a good Burke County team, a good Washington County team, and good Baldwin County Team, and a Great Thompson High School Team. If Liberty County beat those teams, there is no doubt that they win their Region and will go very far in the post season. I was simply stating the fact that you were LYING when you said that Coffee did not pay it’s “first squad”. The people of Fitzgerald heard all last year how the scrimmage did not matter and Coffee would beat them in a regular season game. None of that matters. IMO, no time last year or this year could Coffee play ithin 3 td’s of Fitzgerald. Maybe you need to reread your own posts. Fact is insinuated in a previous post that Coffee’s startes never played. That is a pitiful excuse flat out lie. Admit it and everything is good. Don’t admit it and lie the same lie that most do in that corrupt county you call (or have called) home.

By MIKE ANTHONY
manthony@statesboroherald.com
Burke County at Statesboro In a game filled with big plays and big hits, the Statesboro Blue Devils couldn’t quite come up with enough. Burke County came to Womack Field Friday night and handed Statesboro its first loss of the season – a 35-17 defeat.
Senior quarterback Terrell Brigham and the rest of the Bears offense perfectly executed a no-huddle attack that kept the Devils on their heels all night.
Brigham did it all on Friday, rushing for 111 yards and three touchdowns while passing for 81 more and even recording a few catches.
In all, the Burke offense would rack up 411 yards on the night and cruise past a Statesboro defense that had looked dominant in its first two games.
“We knew that (Brigham) was going to be a factor coming into the game,” said Statesboro coach Steve Pennington. “We tried to stress gang tackling and schemed for their abilities on offense, but they just had too much firepower tonight. We knew that we didn’t want to get in a track race with them and when they jumped out in front we couldn’t quite answer the call.”
Burke County wasted no time in taking the upper hand.
After a great Blue Devil kickoff gave the Bears possession on their own 11 yard line, the Burke offense got right down to business. Utilizing a balanced attack, the Bears used their speed to spread out the Statesboro defense and efficiently moved down the field.
A 10-yard touchdown run by Brigham capped the 11-play, 89-yard opening drive that took just under five minutes to complete.
Statesboro was able to narrow the gap, but could never quite pull even.
On their second drive of the night, a 53-yard run by senior Allen Wooden set the Devils up with first-and-goal on the Burke 3-yard line. A botched snap and a sack caused the drive to stall however, and Statesboro was forced to settle for a field goal.
Trailing 14-3 in the second quarter, senior running back Lamar Stimage slipped in for a two-yard scoring run to bring the Devils within four. Burke was able to add another touchdown before the half, and Statesboro would never get back into the game.
In its first two games of the season, Statesboro was carried by its powerful running game. Lamar Stimage and Aaron Lester were a big reason for that success, but both were hampered by injuries Friday.
“It kills me that I couldn’t be out there tonight,” said Lester. “I was watching all of my teammates fighting hard all night. I just wish I could have done my part to help them.”
Although the Devils were able to run the ball effectively, it was evident that they were sorely missing the big-play abilities of Stimage and Lester. In all, Statesboro was held to just 155 yards on the ground and could never get into a rhythm that would allow for sustained drives.
“Any time you have two quality runners like Aaron and Lamar out, it’s going to hurt,” said Pennington. “It put a lot of pressure on our offensive line. Right now, we’re a little banged up there too. We just weren’t consistent enough in any part of the offense tonight.”
The second half was dominated from the get-go by Burke. Building off of their score at the end of the second quarter, the Bears added touchdowns on their first drive of the third period to take a commanding 28-10 lead.
Twice in the second half, the Devils were able to start a drive in Burke territory, but could never make anything of their good fortune.
Burke stretched its lead to 35-10 in the fourth quarter when backup quarterback Corey Mayton raced in from five yards out.
Statesboro was able to put together one more scoring drive, but by the time Reid Pennington plunged into the end zone to make it 35-17, it was far too late for a comeback.
“This is going to be a good learning experience,” said Pennington. “Some of the concerns that we had coming into the year were exposed tonight. We just need to respond come next week.”
The Blue Devils will wrap up their non-region schedule Friday as they travel to Augusta to take on Thomson in their first road game of the 2009 season.

HeadEast…. You can apologize now!! Harrison will not go below .500, and your fantasy 9-0 match-up with Woodstock is just that! McEachern will win the region and spank EP along the way. Yes, the Hoyas lost many excellent players. However, tradition, coaching, and heart go a long way. Teams like Harrison, P-Ridge, Woodstock, and McEachern are respected for the class and success they have earned. EP has a long way to go before it reaches that goal (if that is a goal of EP). BTW, Woodstock will take EP to the woodshed! I say again, Kool-Aid anyone?

Be it known…Griffin High has a very talented team this year, like most years. They are fast, and the new spread offense is fitting for a team with the speed of Griffin. That being said, they are also small. The first real test will be against Mt. Zion of Jonesboro, and they are fast AND big. They beat us last year, and are also off to a great start to their season. (congrats) I hate to say it, but after seeing GHS early on, and knowing what they have, I’m afraid they will struggle this friday and lose to Mt. Zion. Just being objective. The game is in the bears den, and on TV, so it should be a good one. Go Griffin. The team nobody knows about, We’re # 2 !!!

Yo-
Fair enough- looking forward to a Lowndes/Grayson match up again this year. It would prove to be another great game.
Rams played 2nd & 3rd string defense the 2nd half (actually starting in the 2nd quarter). It’s great to get the younger kids some reps. Depth is good- I’m sure you can appreciate that

South Gwinnett looks great this year. The Rams are respecting that & are ready for a war.
Not sure about the “steroid” taking comment- that’s a little over the line. The fact that the kids never missed a workout all summer might have something to do with strength. Let’s keep it about the “x”s & “o”s.

REEZE, Once again, you called it right. “Coach Nix will have those kids ready to play”. But, REEZE as much as I hate to say this:”You have been sandbagging all of us.” Nobody knew that Northside had a 7′1 340 lb RB wearing a size 22 shoe who must be approaching age 35 by now.

To: South Ga Rules:
The new Veterans High School under construction in Houston County will impact Houston County High School and AAA Perry High School more that Northside or Warner Robins-with NSWR beiing the lest affected. One large neighborhood of NSWR will go back to Houston County High for sure. It is the Quail Run Area. A lot of students come from there but they seem to be more into baseball and soccer. We will miss them! Some Warner Robins students will shift to Houston County and a few NSWR students to WRHS. I believe Houston county will stay AAAAA because she has close to 2300 students. NSWR is already in the AAAA range and WRHS is borderline for AAAA. We don’t care– We will kick both of their butts.lol
Jaybo: I am pulling for Thomas County Central to make a powerful come back next year but NSWR
will be in the same boat. Our team will be very experienced. Now, imagine if we win it all in 2010 at AAAA. I can see the headlines how NSWR had to move back down to win another Championship. This our down year but in any classification NSWR will make a strong run next year.

Northside Observer: Thanks for the info.
TJ: Agree with you about Grayson & South Gwinnett. However, I would say that Norcross is still a decent, playoff contending team in Region 7-AAAAA, though as a 3 or 4 seed. PRidge & North Gwinnett will be the top 2 seeds. Delino DeShields had a breakout game for Norcross Friday night, even though it was against a wretched Mill Creek team.

It is so sad to see how people would hate on a APS school just because they are predominaetly black and continued to play, to defeat a white team such as Whitewater. People should realize that it doesn’t matter what background your school has but the amount of talent that you have. It was a good battle between two undefeated teams however Mays came out on top even when Whitewater fans left the game at Lakewood Stadium thinking that they wrapped Mays up but really was proven wrong. How about we let the talent talk for itself for now on and not waste our breaths about last year. This is a new year and a new season so be ready for anything. And one last thing to say
GO RAIDERS!!!!!!

Michael 18, Rams are on another level this year on Defense is what I am saying. Last year they were one of the best, now they are the best in my very humble opinion.
SouthGARules, for 8 AAAAA I am predicting the following finish and order.
1.Grayson 2.South Gwinnett 3.Parkview 4.Dacula 5.Brookwood 6.Shiloh 7.Meadowcreek

Greetings Hollabackk,
Yes Bradwell Institute get hammered by Houston County. Bradwell Institute has such a very young and inexperienced team this year. Although they won their first two games, I still wasn’t truly convinced that they were spectacular. However; They are playing better than the team at this time last year.
Bradwell has a very young inexperienced offensive line, and they don;t do a very good ob protecting the QB. Now it was said that Houston had players returning from two years ago. If that is true, then they wnt be the scrub team from Region 1-AAAAA as some people think. To come in Bradwell Institute home field, and beat them like that says a lot.
But I still believe that Bradwell Institue will go 9-1 this year even with that young team. They are getting better every week. What I will say, is that you Savannah Schools had better beware. Bradwell Institute is coming there and will dominate all of the Savannah Schools again this year. I just don’t know how big the point spread will be.
