Wolverine Fan, do you think your boys will take the Indians to that wood shed tonight? Everyone talks about their play makers on offense and believe me, we were on the bad end of that last week. But it’s their defense that really impressed me. That big, strong experienced O-line of ours was dominated. The Wolverines aren’t exactly explosive on offense but your defense looks stout. I think we might see a 17-14 type game.

I guess it was started by that cheesy NFL team Tampa. We co-opted Tampa’s cheesy cannon and Oakland’s cheesy logo. Our opinion is that only teams named Raiders, Bucaneers, Pirates, etc should use a cannon. After all if the Hoya bulldog shot a cannon it would be totally senseless, and interfere with their excellent band. BTW, we have a band, the Raider Brigade, and they’re pretty good. Look for them to be playing in Lowndes later in the year!

One correction to make, Mr. Carvell:
It’s North Gwinnett’s homecoming game tonight. Therefore, it’s South Forsyth AT North Gwinnett.

Go Dawgs!

HeadEast, is Lowndes having some type of band competition that the Raider Brigade will be attending? You folks still have a good football team but from what I am reading, you are not nearly as strong as last season on defense. You are definitely a believer, though. You have to be if you think you will go undefeated through region 5. I think MAC, Woodstock and even my Etowah boys have the ability to hang a loss on the Raiders. Funny comments about the cannon though. LOL

Speaking Of Bands? This will be interesting. Who has the Best High School Marching band in Class AAAAA, AAAA, AAA, AA, and A This Year?

SportsFan31313, for what it is worth, Grayson beat themselves vs PTR last year. Four bad long snaps for field goals after a perfect season by the long snapper. The final drive before the end of the regulation, Grayson collected more penalty yardage than the previous two or three games combined. Any one of those things changes and Grayson is in the Dome instead of PTR. Having said that, Grayson made the most mistakes and PTR made fewer so they won and advanced.

For everyone talking about how Lowndes and others have scored X number of points and Grayson only 10-14, there is no doubt that Grayson has some work to do on offense. They have made mistakes that hopefully they have learned from. In the end though, the season record is measured in wins and losses and not the individual scores. At the end of the season it doesn’t matter if the defense won the game or the offense or both, only that they won. I think the Grayson offense is coming around and will score the points needed.

All I can really say for sure is that high school football rocks and is fun to watch.

carlos – We are smaller, slower, and untested and those three games are on the road so your assessment is very accurate. However, I like to talk smack until we actually lose and then I like to make excuses. I learned most of that from EagleNationRising! BTW, our band is required to be available every Friday through the state championships just in case. They support the team and schedule competitions on Saturdays unlike Milton whose band was away when we played them in the playoffs last year. I expect EP to be at Lowndes in the third round, but only if we lose the coin toss for home field!!!

Head East – I like your “spirit”… and both you and “Cannon” certainly appear to be chomping at the bit to get into the real action in the Region 5-AAAAA race with your first region test tonight. But, I wouldn’t be looking so far ahead to a 9-0 showdown with Woodstock in November. McEachern has surprised some folks (Etowah and Brookwood for sure!) and is red hot right now. Several have already said it… the winner of McEachern/Woodstock tonight will be the R5-AAAAA front runner (I predict McEachern). I think EP will definitely be in the race, but I would look no further than next week when EP has to visit McEachern.

Don’t forget you guys visit the Eagle’s Nest two weeks later. Etowah got their nose bloodied last week (maybe face smashed in is a better description), and has something to prove from here on out… here’s hoping it starts tonight with Kennesaw Mtn!

No question that the interesting game this week will be Camden vs Hoover, AL.

Is GA really that much better than Alabama? Or was North vs Prattville a fluke.

I sure wish some quality GA teams would take on a few of the highly rated FL teams. I just do not believe that Florida really has that many teams that are among the best in the nation. I’ll give credit to Byrnes, Prattville, and Hoover for being willing to see where they stack up versus teams outside of their respective states. If the Florida teams only play each other and a few “girls school for the blind”, that doesn’t prove diddly to me.

You also have to give credit to the Georgia teams who are willing to put some hard “non conference” opponents on their schedules: Lowndes, Camden, Grayson, P Ridge, and N Gwinnett. I have a lot more respect for teams who are willing to prove it on the field rather than only relying on their shrill fans and local sports writers. Even if you take a loss, you learn more in a game that is 14 – 10 than in a game that is 44 – 6.

Just wondering if Cannon Rules is related to last years Homet? Maybe he just changed his handle?
I do appreciate the posts from all the EP fans. They will have a tough road ahead, and I don’t think 9-0 is acheivable for anyone in 5AAAAA, except possibly McCeachern. Etowah will be under the radar for awhile but get arch rival Woodstock and then EP back to back at home. What a country!

well Grayson is good on defence you have to give them that defence wins championships hopefully Dacula will put up a fight if Grayson scores low points again then their offence isnt that good all teams will have to do is score at least two TD’s its possible if u got a good line u will be fine against Grayson, And everyone saying lowndes is unstopable come on you idiots u said the same thing last year and u had the top player in the country and u lost Lowndes chokes when it matters kinda like the New England Patriots when they lost the Super Bowl hahaha

I know its not that important of a game but does anyone have any thoughts on the Coffee/Shaw game?

TrojanDude

1 5 A fan…

I don’t know that much personally about Shaw. Just what one hears. I have seen all of Coffee’s games this year including their shellacking by Fitzgerald in the pre-season scrimmage. In Coffee’s defense, the first squads did not even start the Fitzgerald Scrimmage and Coach Eldridge puts no stock whatsoever in scrimmage scores. With that said, from what I saw, I think the Purple Hurricanes could go toe-to-toe with any team outside the top five in AAAAA and hold their own.

Coffee beat Ware county soundly in everything but the score. The Trojans had the game firmly in control until literally the last minute or so. Even so, a loss is a loss. Note that Ware is tied for 8th in the AAAA coaches poll.

The Coffee-Pierce game was used by Coach Eldridge as another lets-see-what-we’ve-got game. Coffee won handily and dominated as they should have. It was also the first start back from an injury for Coffee’s returning senior QB.

Coffee is hard-nosed and quick, executes well and has four Div 1 prospects as well as several other talented skill players. They are young, starting about 75% Sophmores and Juniors. They run what is in effect two QB sets and both can run and have good, accurate arms. Their offensive sets can be confusing for the defenses and having two QB’s in the offensive set offers a lot of options.

My gut feeling is that, as in years past, things are falling together at just the right time. Coffee should handle Shaw but, Shaw is Shaw. They always seem to wind up seeded.

I don’t know what to expect from Coffee when they hit the 1AAAAA schedule next week. I know they won’t be pushovers. They are awfully young though. That’s why this is all so much fun though. One just never can tell.

Coffee is young. They are starting about 75% sophmores and juniors. They took a thorough shellacking from Fitzgerald in the pre-season scrimmage but in Coffee’s defense the starting squads didn’t even start the game. Coach Eldridge puts no stock what-so-ever in pre-season scores. I’ll say this about the Purple Hurricanes though. I would bet money they could go toe-to-toe with anyone outside the top 5 in AAAAA.

Coffee had the Ware County game well in control until the very last minutes. The score did not reflect the game. A loss is a loss though. (Note that Ware county is tied for 8th in the Coaches Poll)

Coach Eldridge used the Pierce County game for anothe lets-see-what-we’ve-got game. Coffee won handily and was very impressive any time the staring squads were in. It was also the first start for Coffee’s returning seniot QB who had been out with an injury

Coffee runs a lot of offensive sets with two QB’s on the field. It makes for a lot of options offensively as both run and throw well. Coffee has 4 Div 1 prospects as well as some outstanding young skill players. They are fearless, fast and hard-nosed. Just need to get in some playing time for the younger guys.

Don’t know much about Shaw other than what you hear. My gut feeling is that things are falling together at just the right time for Coffee and they should handle Shaw without too much grief. Shaw is Shaw though. They always seem to wind up seeded

Hey TrojanDude – Next Coffee game you hit, make sure you send us some cool game photos. We’re not limited to posting pictures from metro ATL schools. Now you can just upload them, write your captions and they’ll be on our site right away. No worries about the double-post. It happens. Thanks for the info on Coffee and Shaw. Good to know b/c you never know who you may face in playoffs, eventually.

And if anyone wants to see a really cool, well-done tribute website, scroll up in the comments thread and check out the Briarcliff Barons website. We gave it a look earlier today and were impressed. Also, it got the old AJC newsroom debate started about why Georgia high schools nowadays pick such bland mascot names. Barons? That’s sharp. Why’s everyone got to be a wild animal or some variant of an NFL or Georgia college team? Where’s the creativity, y’all? Paging former AJC high schools writer and “Take 10″ scribe-in-chief Jeff Haws, who always had fiercely-held opinions on this subject.
