OK, HS football fans – let’s get the Week 3 talk started early. Doubts have been raised in some of our other blogs about just how mighty Peachtree Ridge and Grayson really are. Even Newnan was taken to task in another blog this week.

What’s up with that? It’s WEEK THREE. Have we really seen the best from any ranked teams yet?

You tell us. Go. This blog stays open all weekend long for YOU to talk high school football.

Yall don’t show no love to B.T. Washington HS since Branden Smith left. Yall thought Washington was a one man show? #6 Zack Wichett( don’t know if I spelled it right) Might be one of the top juniors in the nation. Plus don’t forget about Antonio Goodwin, Quadrel Forte and Garrison Glass they make plays too. Show the APS school some more love.

Michael Carvell,

No disrespect, but you can’t be serious about previewing those games.
Northview at Peachtree Ridge (Michael Carvell’s live chat game)
Sequoyah at Hillgrove
McNair at M.L. King
Buford at Lovett

Are you serious? Oh I get it. You only preview more North Georgia Teams…… How bias…..

The 4 games you highlighted are probably not the best matchups to say the least. P’tree Ridge will put something on Northview that Ajax can’t take off. MLK will do the same to McNair and likewise Buford to Lovett. As far as Sequoyah-Hillgrove, I know nothing about either school. I believe McEachern-Woodstock is probably the best metro matchup this week. South Gwinnett names the score against Meadowcreek & the Grayson-Dacula tilt will NOT be decided on the final play of the game (as Dacula’s first 2 games were)
Would be interested in Carver-Columbus-NSWR game. Probably the best game in the state.

SportsFan31313 — You misunderstand. The games listed on this board are those we’ll have various writers covering Friday night. Michael Carvell isn’t previewing those games. He’ll just log on from the Peachtree Ridge game (unless lack of wi-fi prevents it, which can happen) and report from there and try to answer some fans’ questions.

The GHSF Daily staff is handling our previews this season and here are the 10 games for Week 3 that they’ve deemed those not to be missed. You’ll see that they cover both metro Atlanta and the State of Georgia.

We’d say it’s a pretty unbiased list. But you may feel differently. At any rate, your beef would be with the GHSF Daily staff, not Carvell.

I’ve gotta agree with my new southern brothers. Woodstock-McEachern and CC-NSWR are by far the top games in the state. I’m not sure about the NSWR game, but I know that the winner of the Wood-McE game is going to be favored to win the region. Just wish I could make it up to see it. I wanta throw in Camden-Hoover game as the 3rd best game. Not sure about #4. Any body got anything so we can make the REAL, er the Fan’s top 4 games of the week. haha

Lowndes rocks! I’m with Reeze and the rest. Northview lost by 27 to Marietta so the Ridge game is a certain blowout. I know they don’t like to get too far OTP (outside the perimeter for our southern friends) but I think Woodstock is closer to downtown than Suwanee! I don’t really have a dog in this fight but I’ll pull for the Woodstock Woodys using my ABC (Anything But Cobb) approach. We non-Cobb teams have to stick together. Besides there’s something about the slim possibility of 9-0 EP at 9-0 Woodstock to end the season that I really like.

Greetings SouthGaRules,

I see that Chip Saye has picked Houston County over Bradwell Institute. I am a Bradwell Institute fan by far, but I am also a realist. I don’t think that Bradwell Institute has ever beaten Houston County, and I stand to be corrected if I am wrong. Bradwell Institute is a fairly young team with new players on a rebuilding year. However; this young inexperienced team is playing better than the team of last year. They are 2-0 this as compared to last year, Bradwell Institute went 0-2 the beginning of the season due to injuries at the beginning of last year’s season. But Bradwell Institute ended up with a strong come back winning 7 seven games in row losing only to the last regular season game to Region3-AAAAA Champions Camden County who went on to win the State Championship. Bradwell Institute Defense this year is very fast and physical, just like the teams from Region1-AAAAA. They are getting better every week. So this year, I am going to give the edge to Bradwell Institute because of their defense, and them having home field advantage. This will be a very hard hitting game. This game will be determine by defense.

HeadEast…

The Cannon is loaded and ready for tomorrow night at “THE BONEYARD”, I am a bit curious about this years South Cobb team…they lost 14 / 6 to Campbell in their opener then BEAT Kennesaw Mountain 21 / 0 !!! Those type scores scare me a bit and I hope EAST is not looking past South Cobb to next weeks McEachern game.

and to “Wolverine2Blazer”…Regardless who wins the Woodstock / McEachern game tomorrow night the winner of that game WILL NOT be favored to win the division!!! BOTH of these teams still have to play EAST PAULDING’S RAIDERS…and our Raiders may be 9/0 going into that last week when we travel TO WOODSTOCK!!!

But the COUNTDOWN IS on for 5A-AAAAA and that noise South Cobb is hearing already IS NOT THUNDER…TICK…TICK…TICK…BOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

Has anyone scored a lot of points on Warner Robins yet? That is a stout defense. May say Grayson offense is down, but is it really? Lets watch and see if Warner Robins beats up offense this week and if Grayson puts up points on Dacula to determine things a bit more. What has been seen the last 2 weeks is Grayson’s defense dominating the other teams. Has South played a solid defense yet. I think not. With that defense Grayson is at least in the top 10 in the state.

I hope Camden changes the QB or they will get torn apart this week! They will really fall in the standings then.

Warner Robins keyed on Ean Pemberton all night. Grayson moved the ball between the 20’s all night, but missed FG’s & losing the ball on downs did not help. Grayson will be fine. I don’t see anyone beating them in regular season.

Not really sure about McE but i’m sure it isn’t to shabby. I think that this friday’s Wood-McE and the East-McE in a few weeks will shead alot of light onto who’s going to be the top 3. Hoya Chuck…

I wish that McEachern / Woodstock game had fell on EAST bye week I would have loved to gone to see it. I don’t think last week was a fluke and I will be shocked if McEachern “crushes” Woodstock…Last year Woodstock came to “THE BONEYARD” and beat the Raiders…they are well coached and will be even tougher AT HOME…for McEachern to win they will have to play close to perfect all night. It may come down to a special team play from some of that “speed” we been hearing McEachern has this year.

As far as Harrison “crushing” EAST…You forget SOOOOO easy how hard fought last years EAST / HARRISON game was. You saw EAST only one time and that night EAST BEAT ITSELF!!! You forget how “BEAT – UP” Harrison was in the weeks following the EAST game…Ya’ll LOST 2 of the next 3 games with players so bruised and banged up they needed weeks to recover from the beating they took from the EAST “D”!!! This year the Hoya “pups” come to “THE BONEYARD”…WELCOME TO REALITY!!!

EAST loyality aside if Harrison finishes above 500 this year it will be a a stroke of luck…the look of 5A-AAAAA has changes and you will hear a fan favorite all year….4th Quarter Raider Quarter!!!! as our Raiders finish off team after team on their march to the Division title!!!

Grayson is not over rated. They are a pretty good team. But I doubt that it could beat Lowndes County this year. It will be a toss up between Peachtree Ridge and Grayson. Peachtree Ridge beat them last year remember. Peachtree Ridge?????? I don’t know as of yet. They got blown away by Perinnial Power Lowndes County did’nt they? But out of all fairness, No one will beat Lowndes County This year. Those Plow Boys are too Big, too Fast, Too Physical. This Team is the Camden County Team of last year. What is it with the stupid cannons? Several high schools seem to be using them in the state. Hoya Chuck – You’re going below 500 tonight. You’ll probably rally the next two weeks but then Woodstock at home and EP and MAC on the road will put you sub 500 for the season. You beat EP last year because we self-destructed with a fumbled punt and Robbie G was great on O and D. This year you got nothing after the turnipseed kid and he’s not enough…no playoffs for you.

Wolverine Fan, do you think your boys will take the Indians to that wood shed tonight? Everyone talks about their play makers on offense and believe me, we were on the bad end of that last week. But it’s their defense that really impressed me. That big, strong experienced O-line of ours was dominated. The Wolverines aren’t exactly explosive on offense but your defense looks stout. I think we might see a 17-14 type game.

I guess it was started by that cheesy NFL team Tampa. We co-opted Tampa’s cheesy cannon and Oakland’s cheesy logo. Our opinion is that only teams named Raiders, Bucaneers, Pirates, etc should use a cannon. After all if the Hoya bulldog shot a cannon it would be totally senseless, and interfere with their excellent band. BTW, we have a band, the Raider Brigade, and they’re pretty good. Look for them to be playing in Lowndes later in the year!

HeadEast, is Lowndes having some type of band competition that the Raider Brigade will be attending? You folks still have a good football team but from what I am reading, you are not nearly as strong as last season on defense. You are definitely a believer, though. You have to be if you think you will go undefeated through region 5. I think MAC, Woodstock and even my Etowah boys have the ability to hang a loss on the Raiders. Funny comments about the cannon though. LOL

Fred

September 11th, 2009
2:25 pm

SportsFan31313, for what it is worth, Grayson beat themselves vs PTR last year. Four bad long snaps for field goals after a perfect season by the long snapper. The final drive before the end of the regulation, Grayson collected more penalty yardage than the previous two or three games combined. Any one of those things changes and Grayson is in the Dome instead of PTR. Having said that, Grayson made the most mistakes and PTR made fewer so they won and advanced.

For everyone talking about how Lowndes and others have scored X number of points and Grayson only 10-14, there is no doubt that Grayson has some work to do on offense. They have made mistakes that hopefully they have learned from. In the end though, the season record is measured in wins and losses and not the individual scores. At the end of the season it doesn’t matter if the defense won the game or the offense or both, only that they won. I think the Grayson offense is coming around and will score the points needed.

All I can really say for sure is that high school football rocks and is fun to watch.

carlos – We are smaller, slower, and untested and those three games are on the road so your assessment is very accurate. However, I like to talk smack until we actually lose and then I like to make excuses. I learned most of that from EagleNationRising! BTW, our band is required to be available every Friday through the state championships just in case. They support the team and schedule competitions on Saturdays unlike Milton whose band was away when we played them in the playoffs last year. I expect EP to be at Lowndes in the third round, but only if we lose the coin toss for home field!!!

Head East – I like your “spirit”… and both you and “Cannon” certainly appear to be chomping at the bit to get into the real action in the Region 5-AAAAA race with your first region test tonight. But, I wouldn’t be looking so far ahead to a 9-0 showdown with Woodstock in November. McEachern has surprised some folks (Etowah and Brookwood for sure!) and is red hot right now. Several have already said it… the winner of McEachern/Woodstock tonight will be the R5-AAAAA front runner (I predict McEachern). I think EP will definitely be in the race, but I would look no further than next week when EP has to visit McEachern.

Don’t forget you guys visit the Eagle’s Nest two weeks later. Etowah got their nose bloodied last week (maybe face smashed in is a better description), and has something to prove from here on out… here’s hoping it starts tonight with Kennesaw Mtn!

No question that the interesting game this week will be Camden vs Hoover, AL.

Is GA really that much better than Alabama? Or was North vs Prattville a fluke.

I sure wish some quality GA teams would take on a few of the highly rated FL teams. I just do not believe that Florida really has that many teams that are among the best in the nation. I’ll give credit to Byrnes, Prattville, and Hoover for being willing to see where they stack up versus teams outside of their respective states. If the Florida teams only play each other and a few “girls school for the blind”, that doesn’t prove diddly to me.

You also have to give credit to the Georgia teams who are willing to put some hard “non conference” opponents on their schedules: Lowndes, Camden, Grayson, P Ridge, and N Gwinnett. I have a lot more respect for teams who are willing to prove it on the field rather than only relying on their shrill fans and local sports writers. Even if you take a loss, you learn more in a game that is 14 – 10 than in a game that is 44 – 6.

well Grayson is good on defence you have to give them that defence wins championships hopefully Dacula will put up a fight if Grayson scores low points again then their offence isnt that good all teams will have to do is score at least two TD’s its possible if u got a good line u will be fine against Grayson, And everyone saying lowndes is unstopable come on you idiots u said the same thing last year and u had the top player in the country and u lost Lowndes chokes when it matters kinda like the New England Patriots when they lost the Super Bowl hahaha

I know its not that important of a game but does anyone have any thoughts on the Coffee/Shaw game?

1 5 A fan…

I don’t know that much personally about Shaw. Just what one hears. I have seen all of Coffee’s games this year including their shellacking by Fitzgerald in the pre-season scrimmage. In Coffee’s defense, the first squads did not even start the Fitzgerald Scrimmage and Coach Eldridge puts no stock whatsoever in scrimmage scores. With that said, from what I saw, I think the Purple Hurricanes could go toe-to-toe with any team outside the top five in AAAAA and hold their own.

Coffee beat Ware county soundly in everything but the score. The Trojans had the game firmly in control until literally the last minute or so. Even so, a loss is a loss. Note that Ware is tied for 8th in the AAAA coaches poll.

The Coffee-Pierce game was used by Coach Eldridge as another lets-see-what-we’ve-got game. Coffee won handily and dominated as they should have. It was also the first start back from an injury for Coffee’s returning senior QB.

Coffee is hard-nosed and quick, executes well and has four Div 1 prospects as well as several other talented skill players. They are young, starting about 75% Sophmores and Juniors. They run what is in effect two QB sets and both can run and have good, accurate arms. Their offensive sets can be confusing for the defenses and having two QB’s in the offensive set offers a lot of options.

My gut feeling is that, as in years past, things are falling together at just the right time. Coffee should handle Shaw but, Shaw is Shaw. They always seem to wind up seeded.

I don’t know what to expect from Coffee when they hit the 1AAAAA schedule next week. I know they won’t be pushovers. They are awfully young though. That’s why this is all so much fun though. One just never can tell.

Coffee is young. They are starting about 75% sophmores and juniors. They took a thorough shellacking from Fitzgerald in the pre-season scrimmage but in Coffee’s defense the starting squads didn’t even start the game. Coach Eldridge puts no stock what-so-ever in pre-season scores. I’ll say this about the Purple Hurricanes though. I would bet money they could go toe-to-toe with anyone outside the top 5 in AAAAA.

Coffee had the Ware County game well in control until the very last minutes. The score did not reflect the game. A loss is a loss though. (Note that Ware county is tied for 8th in the Coaches Poll)

Coach Eldridge used the Pierce County game for anothe lets-see-what-we’ve-got game. Coffee won handily and was very impressive any time the staring squads were in. It was also the first start for Coffee’s returning seniot QB who had been out with an injury

Coffee runs a lot of offensive sets with two QB’s on the field. It makes for a lot of options offensively as both run and throw well. Coffee has 4 Div 1 prospects as well as some outstanding young skill players. They are fearless, fast and hard-nosed. Just need to get in some playing time for the younger guys.

Don’t know much about Shaw other than what you hear. My gut feeling is that things are falling together at just the right time for Coffee and they should handle Shaw without too much grief. Shaw is Shaw though. They always seem to wind up seeded

Hey TrojanDude – Next Coffee game you hit, make sure you send us some cool game photos. We’re not limited to posting pictures from metro ATL schools. Now you can just upload them, write your captions and they’ll be on our site right away. No worries about the double-post. It happens. Thanks for the info on Coffee and Shaw. Good to know b/c you never know who you may face in playoffs, eventually.

And if anyone wants to see a really cool, well-done tribute website, scroll up in the comments thread and check out the Briarcliff Barons website. We gave it a look earlier today and were impressed. Also, it got the old AJC newsroom debate started about why Georgia high schools nowadays pick such bland mascot names. Barons? That’s sharp. Why’s everyone got to be a wild animal or some variant of an NFL or Georgia college team? Where’s the creativity, y’all? Paging former AJC high schools writer and “Take 10″ scribe-in-chief Jeff Haws, who always had fiercely-held opinions on this subject.

Hey ramsfan123 and everyone — Remember, you can check live in-game updates from scoreatl.com all evening here: http://www.ajc.com/sports/high-school/high-school-scoreboard-130179.html

But last time we checked we didn’t see a Grayson score. Not many scores in yet. Hopefully soon, though.

Adding: heyAJC — Just heard from Michael Carvell and he’s getting set up out at Peachtree Ridge to try checking in on this blog, if that’s what you’re talking about. Otherwise, we’re not sure because there’s plenty of good chatter going on here. So please jump on in.

Hey everybody. Out here in Dacula at Falcons-Grayson and it’s all Grayson. Rams little back Ean Pemberton has TDs of 6 and 48 yards and DB Kori Gaines — a BYU commitment — has two interceptions.
