If they play again in November, will it be the same story?
I didn’t see the Lowndes-Peachtree Ridge game, but hearing from a few who did, and reading newspaper reports, it sounds like Lowndes played a great game, while Peachtree Ridge got knocked down hard early and couldn’t get up. Result: 51-17.
Tyler Hunter, the son of former Georgia receiver Brice Hunter, returned the kickoff for a touchdown, then ran a fumble in for a touchdown. Lowndes also scored on an interception return.
Don’t misunderstand: If I didn’t think Lowndes were the better team, I wouldn’t have put the Vikings at No. 1 in preseason. A few people grumbled at my sticking by Lowndes after its QF exit last year and the loss of Greg Reid. If Lowndes played Peachtree Ridge tomorrow, I’d expect Lowndes to handle the Lions again.
But it’s a long ways until November. Just ask Tucker and Marist. Or just ask Lowndes, for that matter. Just curious of how others view the significance of this game.
Can we write Peachtree Ridge off? I don’t see how a team that reached the final in 2008, played Camden County to the wire and returned two-thirds of those starters can’t still win a state title this year.
But Lowndes is the favorite. 51-17 settled that.
In other news, Holy Innocents’ and Chattahoochee County in Class A are ranked for the first time in their histories, and Treutlen is there for the first time in 10 years. HI plays No. 1 Wesleyan this week.
Etowah got pounded, leaving a hole in the rankings. I picked Woodstock. Who was your choice? McEachern? Roswell? South Gwinnett is looking good, fwiw.
Big game this week: Carver-Columbus vs. Northside-Warner Robins. I think I’m taking Carver.
Also watch Buford vs. Lovett.

South Ga. Rules!!!…Gwinnett this & Gwinnett that!!! Grayson, Peachtree Ridge & McEachern…Well McEachern has to first get past Woodstock this week…AT WOODSTOCK…that in itself will prove to be a handfull!
These early rankings based on one or two games show nothing yet. Many teams have yet to play a game within their own division and are untested. Less see where we stand come Saturday morning of this week!
East Paulding ( 1-0 )begins division play this week with South Cobb ( 1-1 ) this week at home in “THE BONEYARD”!!! Grayson remembers well last years playoff game against East Paulding at Grayson. Grayson won last years match but East proved they could step up and play the best AAAAA had to offer.

Slalom sorry we didn’t hookup at the game. I had to do something for a local radio station before the game that delayed my plans. You and I agree with the defense if they stay healthy will be better than last year. They are bigger and faster this year. Once we get our 4 starters back including our quarterback we should become a scary team. All 4 should be back next week

fred,,,just simply implying that the game was last year and for the guy/woman who insinuated that lowndes shouldnt be even playing at all this year,,,well,,,i guess thats not the most stupidest thing ever said on here but its close. its a new year,,,a new season and some new players ,,,time to put 2008 behind,,i agree,,just wish other “adults” knew how to do that. as far as ALL the players involved,,well,,,both sides will disagree as to who were really involved and actions by coaching staff, school staffs and law enforcement. again,,,2009 is here,,lets all concentrate on that.
as for the one who is teaching grammer to the “plowboy” about “to bad” being “too bad”,,,how are these young kids suppose to know anymore when our own state college spells dogs “DAWGS”?

I agree Viking fan we are all Georgians but that doesn’t mean anything that we have more students students in our schools. The proof is in the pudding, the schools that used to be perenial powers in the area aren’t anymore. Southwest Dekalb were a fixture in the playoffs in the late 80’s and 90’s but since they opened Stephenson and Martin Luther King, the talent hasn’t been the same since. Don’t get me wrong they have good teams but top to bottom it’s no where near the talent level they had on both sides of the ball in the past. There’s no coincidence that Stephenson and MLK have had great teams in their short history but no championships. The same can be said for Tucker, although they’ve had a fairly god tradition. Before last year they were the Stephenson and MLK of the past, they always made the playoffs but never got too far. Lakeside of Atlanta had excellent teams in the 90’s and have since fallen off the map because all of the players in their area are going to either Tucker or St. Pius. Too much to contend with, even if you have those athletes in your school, what’s going to stop them from going elsewhere? They’ll go where the success is bottom line, you guys don’t have to deal with that. That’s why I brought up the fact that school saturation in certain areas affect the success of the programs.

McEachern High should be ranked in the top 10. If there is a 5A school better than this team, I really would like to see them play. These boys are fast, big and aggressive.

Region 1, how far back do you want to go? Back when Lowdnes and Northside were the red-haired stepchildren to Valdosta, WR or Colquitt.
When they made up here to the dome they would run into some of our are teams like SWD. You guys would win some and the Decatur schools would win some, bottom line. There’s wasn’t any dominance. One of the best games in the history of GA high school football was Valdosta and Southwest Dekalb in the dome in 94 or 95. That was a heck of a game and although Valdosta won they didn’t roll over anybody. The next year in the dome Warner Robins came up and SWD sent them back down South looking forward to next year.

K-man, I hate to break it to yah but the real AAAAA championship game was play in the Semi’s last year down at Camden when we went there. The game was lost on a fluke pick-6 and they still only beat us by one point. So the South GA domination isn’t really all there. But thats in the past.
Cannon! Thank you man. Atleast somebody from East will give us some respect. Dont think your gonna need it but good luck against South Friday.
And to the EP/McE person who said woodstock only run’s the ball. I really dont know where your getting your info from. But you might wanta change your sorce. Woodstock’s got a dynamic passing attack with our WR and TEs.
Just wondering, With the ENR back, I think we’re just missing the band mom from brookwood. You still out there ma’am?

Im new to all this blogging stuff but from what Ive been reading on here there seems to be a battle over who is best in AAAAA and if Buford could beat the Vikings. I think that Lowndes is the best team in the state especially in 5A but I havent seen Grayson who must be pretty strong to beat Camden. Dont get me wrong Im not a Viking fan at all (cant stand em) but you gotta look at them over the last decade and understand they have become a power. I dont think any of the schools north of warner robbins can put a scare into another team the way Lowndes can. Maybe Buford who I would like to see play Lowndes. Just my thoughts. have a good day.

REPORT ON LOWNDES COACH RANDY MCPHERSON’S RADIO SHOW LAST NIGHT. Coach McPherson was very complimentary of Peachtree Ridge and promised they will be “in the thick of things” come playoff time. He said last week’s game was a fluke and everything went right for Lowndes and wrong for Ridge. He said Ridge’s O Line and D line is as good as anyone’s and that they have two great linebackers. He also said their coaching staff is very good.
But local grill and pub owner Myron P. summed up the Lowndes Peachtree Ridge game by saying “after seeing the game in person and now watching it on film, I know exactly what Peachtree Ridge did wrong last Friday – they got off the bus.” Maybe that advice will help them against North Gwinnett later in the season. Don’t get off the bus the man says!

EagleNationRising,
Oh how I know how much you love your Northside Warner Robbins Team. As a Football Fan and and a strong supporter of South Georgia Football, it would be ludicrous to say that Peachtree Ridge would be written off. Its still too early to tell. We are just into the third week of the season. I wont go as far as saying that Peachtree Ridge should be written off You could never be too over confident of your team. Yes we all know that Northside Robbins won a State Championship. I believe that was in Class AAAA when Class AAAAA was around. I can’t remember, but correct me if I am wrong. You all didn’t play any Region 1 AAAAA teams during that year did you? You all played in one class down. Not taking anything away from NSWR because they are proven to be a good team. But you can’t get too over confident. That is all I am saying. When you do that, you can be beaten. I believe that Peachtree Ridge will bounce back, and will be in the playoffs.

Sportsfan31313, ENR is a lot like Democrats, you confuse’em with facts! NSWR might not be the best team in Houston County this year, but probably are still better than most if not all Atlanta area teams. (NG, Grayson, Newnan, Roswell, and McEachern might prove me wrong!)
And there are not four teams in Peachtree Ridge’s region who are better than them, so they defintely will be in the playoffs. Question is who will make it in our region? Lowndes, Valdosta, NSWR, WR, and Colquitt seem to be the best bets for now. Could end up with three teams tied for 1st place.

How is it going? Well to answer your question, In Region 1-AAAAA I know that it will be Lowndes County of Course, Northside Warner Robbins, Colquitt County, and a toss up between Houston County and Warner Robbins (Demons). As far as 3 teams being tied for 1st place, that is a possibility.

Last year EP was beaten soundly by Woodstock 27-16 and by Harrison 28-16. But all that means is the first year in AAAAA was a learning experience and Reid and team have had those games circled on their calendar for this year! Okay, Woodstock – MAC should be a great game and the winner will have a leg up in the region. But this is this year and unlike Harrison our battle cry is not “wait until last year!” I am a fan and until proven otherwise I expect the East Paulding Raiders to go undefeated in the region, starting with S Cobb in about 54 hours. One thing I dont get is why people keep treating PR’s loss and Camden’s loss differently. Sure, Camden lost only 14-10, but if you look at actual stats, they seem to have been beaten bigger than PR, yet Lowndes, Camden, PR, and Grayson were all definite contenders last year, and it looks like the only reason Camden wasnt knocked down as much as PR after the loss was that they had 7 points over us last year. seriously, if Camden had lost state last year and we won, then they would now be in 9th and PR would be 4. Camden was playing a team ranked lower, but we were playing a team ranked higher. (once again, the offensive yards say Camden was beat worse by grayson than PR was by Lowndes.)

DROCK09. No problem. I was almost a “no-show” due to the weather, but decked out in my bass fishing rain suit and enjoyed the game. The 2009 Cougars are ALREADY scary. I was serious in predicting that NOBODY will put double digits on the Cougars “D” throughout the regular season. Throw the starting QB back into the mix and the sky is the limit. One problem for the 2009 Cougars is that I believe AAAAA is even tougher than in 2008. Lowndes is a monster. Valdosta and Colquitt Co may turn out to be much better than anyone thought. Also I was stunned at the N. Gwinnett win over Prattville. I work in the Montgomery, Al area one day a week along with some devout fans of Prattville who have kept me up to snuff for the past several years. They have a tremendous program with success that rivals the best in Georgia. Then there is Grayson. Frankly, like P’Ridge I believe they are dramatically over rated. (Although our buddy “YO” is still experiencing Grayson nightmares). lol. Throw in NSWR and AAAAA looks much more difficult than in 2008. According to REEZE, this NSWR team is in a re-building mode. Next week the Carver-Col vs. NSWR game should speak volumes about both teams. THE game of the week.

Speaking of P’Ridge, No disrespect intended by my previous comments. To the contrary I agree with many of the posters that a loss this early in the season is no reason to write off an otherwise good team. SOMEBODY help me with this: I cannot recall the exact year, but it must have been somewhere around 10 years ago when Valdosta lost the state title game to Brookwood to the tune of 45-24. Dusty Bonner was QB for the Wildcats. Earlier in the season Valdosta manhandled Brookwood 28-6. ( I believe). Point is, the best team in the state now may not be the best in the state at year’s end.

BUFORD FANS, I share your frustration. All you are looking for is respect. I have been amazed at the success of the program throughout the years. Furthermore, I agree. Buford would tear up most AAAAA teams year in and year out. But regardless of whether your success is in A, AA, AAA, AAAA or AAAAA, that is part of the beauty in the system. At the end of the season, there is still lots to talk about. Every school in each classification has bragging rights. I felt that 2008 Cairo may have been the best in the state at season’s end. Felt the same way about 2007 Buford. This is part of what makes GHS football the great sport that it is. Most everyone assumes that bigger is better. But when you take a look at the enrollment of each school in each classification, the school with the largest enrollment does not necessarily win. i.e. Lowndes vs. P’Ridge. The enrollment at Carver-Col has dipped below 1,000. But my bet is on Carver this week vs. NSWR with an enrollment which is almost double. I believe it was in 2007 when Buford travelled down to Coweta County and put a thrashing on a very good AAAAA E. Coweta team to the tune of 35-7(or maybe it was 35-0) Cannot remember, but it was a “thrashing” at the hands of a school with an enrollment approx 1/3 the size of the opponent. How about AA Brooks County vs.AAAAA Tift Co? Butt kicking in 2008 and 2009. In 2008 Brooks won 35-7. Powerful Lowndes had a tough time against Tift finally winning 28-14. Is that not a good example of parity between 2 great programs regardless of classification? My theory is if it was possible to pit the Top 4 from each classification against each other at season’s end, there would be some major upsets with the smaller schools sometimes faring better than the larger schools. TODD, Share your feelings. lol.

2 things i would like to add… to all the ep fans, why on earth do u consider scoring on an opening drive “playing with the big boys” look at the stats of that game it wasnt even close. Also, why does it matter about the overall score of the game? grayson d has yet to give up a td all year, with that defense why do u need a dynamic offense to be ranked number 2? looks like northside warner robins is a little dissapointed that they cant jump us on their own so please keep predicting a loss by grayson

PRidge Senior quit consoling yourself with offensive yardage stats.
The fact is PTree got the pew beat out of them. Grayson starters went the whole game against Camden and “had to”. Lowndes put almost 250 yards offense on Ptree in the second half. And yes Ptrees offense looked unbeatable once we substituted our “2nd string” into the game and at least 1/2 of their offensive yardage was against that unit in the 4th quarter. Take away the first half in which Lowndes defense domintated. Then spot Ptree a touchdown on the opening second half kickoff return and Lowndes still outscores and wins the game by 27-7 before they put their second unit in. Potentially much worse if Lowndes doesn’t put their second unit in.
Now I don’t say any of this to put down Ptree. I believe Ptree will be just fine by year end.

I was at the East / Grayson Playoff game last year and if you look back at Grayson’s season you will see that in only one other game was Grayson held to under 20 points ( Brookwood at 10 ), in most games you blew out the opponent. Your OWN fans that night told us this was one of your toughest games all year and that EAST was the FIRST team to score on its opening drive against Grayson.
EAST fans had nothing but great things to say about Grayson, ya’ll have a nice stadium, and both teams showed sportsmanship throughout. ( Unlike the following week when ya’ll got a taste of South Ga. “THUG” football!!! )
So yeah, EAST Fans are VERY proud to say our team scored on the opening drive against a team of Graysons caliber, remember it was EAST FIRST year to play in AAAAA!!!
and one other note…stats don’t always win the game…ya’ll moved the ball all night between the 20’s but in the end could ONLY hang 17 on the EAST “D”…It was the Grayson “D” that kept our guys out of the endzone and won the game for you.

Slalom,
Hold that priase for Buford football right now. Buford U thinks that they can compete with Lowndes? They beat a North Hall team 35-7 ( it should have been 35-14 or closer but the refs rode in the same bus with Buford to the game), and their Offense didn’t impress me at all (except for #26 or 28, their best RB). Their Defense is another story. They are fast, big, strong, and hit like someone said something about their mommas. That said, I don’t think that they are the best team on the 985 connector. That honor, my friend, goes to Gainesville. The Red Elephants haven’t even been scored upon yet this season, and it doesn’t look like it will happen until they play Flowery Branch, if it happens then. They have at least 6 D-1 prospects on that team, and several more D-2 prospects to go along with them. They are the only team that I think can give Carver, Columbus any problems this year, because they match up well everywhere on the field, speed, size, strength, and skill level. So Buford U, put that in your pipe and smoke it, and be glad that you didn’t come to 7-AAA two years ago, or Gainesville would smoke you this year. The reason you stayed in AA is so you can keep that regular season unbeaten streak alive, and you know that you would have a better chance of winning more state championships.
Contrary to popular belief, Buford is not as loaded as they have been in years past. However, they are well coached, talented at the skill positions, and they looked like a disciplined team Friday night.

NTH Trojans, I see where you are coming from. I actually know very little about 2009 Buford. My point was not to lay accolades on Buford, but rather to point out that in any given year there are teams in A, AA, AAA and AAAA that are plenty capable of mixing it up with most AAAAA teams. Buford and Brooks County just happen to be among some of those smaller schools who in recent years have proven that they are more than capable of playing with some of the best in AAAAA. Granted, Tift County has not been exactly great, but I believe you get my point. As for 7AAA, hands down the best region in AAA for 2009. Look at the top QB’s in the state. They all come from AAA schools. i.e Gainesville, Flowery Branch, Carver-Col and LaGrange. That is sort of where I was going. 2008 was all about Cairo. MUCH better than anyone else. This year, who knows? Carver is good. But so is F. Branch, Gainesville, Carrollton, LaGrange, Baldwin and Troup. Yes, TROUP. They will be there in the end. Good luck to the Trojans.

Slalom,
I’m not suggesting that Buford is not a very good football team or, for that matter, an excellent program. The point that I was making is that this years’ Buford team is beatable, unlike the team that NH played last year. I knew THAT team was going to win the AA title. This years team, however, is a different story. This might be the first year since somewhere around the turn of the century that a team NOT named Buford or Charlton Co. could very well win the AA state title. That being said, if Buford continues to improve on offense, then they will probably win state. But beat Lowndes? Not this year. As for as AAA, I will continue to believe that it will wind up being Gainesville vs Carver, Columbus. But I also think that Flowery Branch and LaGrange will have a say in it before it’s over. How about a 7AAA vs 2AAA semifinal? It’s a very strong possibility. I can’t see LG having much of a problem with Stephens County this weekend, though, 8AAA is down this year. I would have a hard time seeing any 8AAA team get out of the first round this year.

Etowah was a big disappointment. They made multiple mistakes in the first quarter, they were sluggish. They finally started to play some toward the half. Then the second half started ok but ended up more mistakes and slow, slow play. They definitely did not play like a #8. I don’t think McEachern saw the real Etowah and I don’t think Etowah is finished.
McEachern has several large players who like to take cheap but legal shots. Their defense is so full of themselves it’s unbeleivable. Number 71 is the best player on defense. #70 has good size but doesn’t move well. McEachern does have backfield speed and those guys run with determination. they do not have good team speed. They do make a lot of mistakes, penalties etc.
I don’t know a thing about Woodstock, Mceachern is definitely beatable
