The Georgia High School Football Daily’s Weekend Predictions: Who’s winning and losing in Week Two

For the AJC

Picking the winners of high school football games in the first week of the season can be tricky. You have to base your selections on tradition, last year’s results and whatever previews you might be able to find. In other words, you’re guessing.

Last week, I went into detail about three games and missed on two of them. Southwest DeKalb put up a fight but lost to a strong M.L. King team, and I was way off the mark picking Marist over St. Pius. Only Peachtree Ridge came through as predicted. That’s not exactly the way I wanted to make my debut. Overall, however, I got 77 percent of the winners across the state correct, which is pretty good.

Now we move to the second full week, which presents its own set of problems. Sometimes it’s hard to tell what to make of the first week’s results. For instance, is Lakeside-DeKalb on the road back to respectability, or is Columbia in for a long season? Does Leo Barker have Roswell turned around after going 5-5 in his first season, or is Tift County down a bit this season? Is Hiram’s offense that good, or is Washington’s defense that bad? Only time will tell.

So now we head into Week 2, armed with as many questions as answers:

– Peachtree Ridge at Lowndes: This is the big game of the week, if not the entire regular season. Both teams are on the short list of teams seen as having a shot to win Class AAAAA. Peachtree Ridge, ranked No. 3, looked impressive in beating Harrison 35-13 last week. And I would imagine No. 1 Lowndes looked better than average in putting up 75 points against Woodland-Stockbridge. Lowndes won 22-7 last year, but Peachtree Ridge ended up playing for the state championship. Take Lowndes again this year, but in a closer game. And don’t be surprised if they play this one again in December.

– Brookwood at North Gwinnett: Last week we mentioned Grayson and Peachtree Ridge as state championship contenders from Gwinnett County. Well, you can throw North Gwinnett’s name into consideration as well after the Bulldogs surprised Alabama powerhouse Prattville 14-11 in a well-played game on Saturday. Don’t expect the Bulldogs to get derailed this week, especially after the way Brookwood got run over by McEachern at the Corky Kell Classic.

– Lakeside-DeKalb vs. Tucker at Adams Stadium: Lakeside lost to Columbia 70-7 last year, then turned around and beat the Eagles 21-7 to open this season. The Vikings can only hope for a similar result against Tucker, which beat them 50-0 in 2008. Lakeside might be better this season, but don’t count on another 77-point turnaround. The defending Class AAAA champions win big again.

– Centennial at Roswell: Roswell was coming off a 32-21 loss to Tift County last year when it easily handled Centennial. This time, the Hornets are coming off a 42-7 victory, and they’ll make it 2-0 this season after taking out the Knight again.

– Hiram at Northwest Whitfield: The Hornets’ 55-point performance against Washington last week was eye-opening. But can they keep it going against a Northwest Whitfield team that is a perennial Class AAAA playoff contender? The probably won’t get anywhere near 55 points again, but they should be able to leave Tunnel Hill with a victory.

Last week: 132-40 (.767); Overall: 132-40 (.767)

I like Rome, Etowah, and ECI. I hope the Pea wins down south but it’s hard to pick them. What the heck, PeaRidge 24 – Undisciplined Plowboys 23.

Valdosta wins it’s last game of the season against the hapless Windsor Forest Whatevers while the lonely Plowboys get taken to the proverbial ‘woodshed’. The woodshed’s where the Plowboys keep the female sheep.

Baaah. Ew(e).

To Chip: If Lowndes and Peachtree play again, it’ll be on Nov. 27 in the quarterfinals, not in December.

To Whinersville: Your use of “it’s” is incorrect. “It’s” is a contraction of “it is”. You should have written “its” which is the possesive form of the pronoun “it”. So you have lost all credibility with the rest of your juvenile comments which reek of pure jealousy. We rednecks do like our tractors and our sheep … plus we know how to use English grammar properly (but only when we choose to).

Chip, no pick for the MLK vs. North Cobb game this week… tonight maybe? A ranked team you highlighted last week.

Also, I have to go with Etowah over McEachern… I realize that McEachern is at home and seems to be much improved this year. Any reason for the upset, albeit minor, since Etowah is ranked? I won’t pick the P’Ridge/Lowndes winner, but it should be a barn burner and should make for some smack talk here and next week!

Head East, thanks for the vote of confidence.

Well, I see Brookfan has changed his name. I will guarantee you Valdosta will win more than 2 games this year. It is evident he is jealous of Valdosta & their long standing tradition, considering that his school has no tradition. I’m surprised about Pope over Lassiter , Tift over Brooks & am figuring that you picked McEachern over Etowah due to the game being at McEachern.

HeadEast which one of the 5AAAAA “never ever good enoughs” do you hang your hat on?

Oh that’s right, 5AAAAA doesn’t have any hat racks do they?

Sorry, bad question.

Maybe I should just say, which 5AAAAA team do you pull for that they will own a hat rack one of these milleniums?

Man it must be aweful to know you are in a region
that you will probably die before you ever get to
see a 5A football championship.

I can only hope Lowndes will put up 23 points, because
that will probably be good enough for either team to win.
Both of these teams actually play some serious defense.

Grayson Student asks:
“yo, can i get an honest assesment of lowndes on friday night besides the score how did they look”

Grayson Student….my assessment of Lowndes. First, Viking Lover gave a pretty good assessment except the first string defense has not given up a touchdown this year. The first 40 yard score and drive by Woodland was immediately “after” taking the first string out.

Now my assessment. First a quote. “Hiram Johnson, who is entering his 37th year as a coach at Lowndes, said he believes this year’s defensive line is the best he’s ever seen at Lowndes” Pretty big statement by Hiram Johnson but it is exactly what I have observed thus far this year. The strength of Lowndes this year is “first” in the trenches on both sides of the ball. They are not only big, but quick. Lowndes Dline against PTrees OLine is the test for both teams. 3 of the starters on Lowndes DLine are definite Div 1 prospects (Christian 6′5″ 290-committed to FSU, Copeland and Black – both of who have many Div 1 offers). I believe Copeland has been offered by FSU also, at least according to his Grandad. The other 2 starters on the DLine are a tackle who is 6′2″ and 260. 2 defensive ends (they rotated) who are fast both around 6′3″ to 6′4″ and 200 to 215 lbs. Copeland is DE on the other side.

Our linebackers are Div 1 committment to FSU (Telvin Smith) and
a rotation of 3 other players. Starter is Robert Anderson at other linebacker (starter at fullback last year). Probably end up a Div 2 committment due to being a little small for Div 1. Unless he goes Div 1 as a fullback.

The unknown for the Lowndes team remains the secondary. We have a Div 1 prospect at safety in Tyler Hunter (junior). The rest of the secondary graduated from last year. Both of Lowndes Wbacks (Franklin and Braswell) played some secondary last year and can should they need to. They have not thus far this year.

Running backs. As I have been telling everybody, Troy Braswell (junior) is ready to make his break out at wingback opposite of Khary Franklin (fastest player on team and last 2 years starting qback). Braswell was player of the game last week scoring 4 TDs. 101 yards rushing on 10 rushes and 14 yards in 2 receptions. All in the first half.

Our Qback Cole Parker (junior) is the best we have had under a McPherson coached team. A very good passer who was 6 of 7 passing last week for 107 yards (didn’t play a down in the 2nd half). Also runs
the ball well if he needs to. 2 good scrambles last week for good yardage both times.

What I observed in the 1st half last week.
I counted 29 ball players who played in the first half (not counting kicking teams). 15 of these players are seniors. About 1/2 of these 29 players are subject to play both sides of the ball at any given time. So based on this I would say there are in essence 29 who got enough playing time to pretty much be called starters.

Lowndes will be graduating a large part of the OLine and DLine this year. We will return good skill positions for 2010 but the question for next year will be in the trenches.

Now here is my candid assessment to sum it all up.
I believe this will be the best team Lowndes has ever fielded and
I have been watching them for a lot of years now.
Add to that talent the embarrassment of the Grayson game
of last year and you have some seriously motivated kids.

PTree may prove me all wrong Friday night….we’ll see

Win or lose it is going to be Electric In the concrete palace.Hostile environment and football at its finest..Man i can’t hardly wait to see how they stack up.Peachtree is tough but there not just playing the average 1AAAAA team.Lowndes county doesn’t lose very many games on their turf and i don’t think it is going to happen friday either. It will be determined by mistakes and penalties.I hope Lowndes does better this week in the penalty department.I also hope Cole Parker can throw good enough to open up the running lanes. It will be a packed house and lights out talent on both teams. See you on the visitors 40 yard line, the home side has been sold out!

To Goober:
Your use of sentence structure is incorrect. Your fourth sentence has a complex structure, therefore its independent clause should have been followed by a comma (”,”). Your lack of mastery of the English Language is a sure sign that all rednecks are stupid.

Honestly who careswhat anybody else does with grammar and spelling. nobody likes a grammar nazi and as long as we understand each other and DONT WRITE IN ALL CAPS LIKE THIS, i dont give a $#!+ what grammar you use

BTW, Pridge is gonna make Lowndes really regret this 4-year game-scheduling contract very soon.

Yo – Why all the hostility towards region 5AAAAA? Someone with obvious knowledge of the high school game and absolutley no respect for what is a truly competitive region. I don’t get it? I have not seen any posters including Head East ( East Paulding fan) , clearly you realized that, Etowah fan or even Wolverine fan, say anything negative about your team or region.
Great assesment by the way. Again you have a great knowledge of your program, and I mostly enjoy your posts, but could you ease up on 5 AAAAA, teams like East P, who is new to the region and Etowah with coach Bill Stewart 3 straight playoff appearance and two region championships in his 3 years, along with Woodstock’s run last year gives all region 5AAAAA fans hope. I am looking forward to a great seaon beginning with Etowah’s victory over McCeachern Friday night.

Yo – I have to close ranks with Pops and Head East. Your post was rather stinging, albeit true. I have no problem conceding that the history of Region 5-AAAAA is definitely not on the same level as Region 1-AAAAA and not even in the same ballpark (or football stadium) with no state titles amongst’em. We could throw the usual Metro Atlanta argument about the size of the area to draw from, the lack of continuity with the ever changing school districts as new high schools open every year and thusdiluting the talent, but I won’t (I guess I just did). The North Cobb/Cherokee corridor has grown tremendously in the last 10-15 years, right behind Gwinnett and even DeKalb of the 70s-80s.

In the end, I really don’t want to go down the history road. We can let the football to be played this year speak for itself. I will promise that the P’Ridge/Lowndes game is the one game I am most interested in right behind the Etowah/McEachern game (which I think will have a huge impact on the Region race!).

I will be pulling for P’Ridge just for the whole North GA (Metro Atlanta) vs. South GA to help the argument that the tide has turned in this direction. And I say that lightly as I have strong family ties in South GA, but when in Rome… Who’s ready for some football!?

Chip, I think Hiram is for real. I think the offense is legit. Any one of the backs can break a long one on any play. The wide receiver #84 is probably one of the best in region and is currently flying under the radar. After his two scores in the first half, Hiram didn’t need to throw the ball much. Hiram also handled Harrison in the scrimmage 39-16.

Or, do the Bears have to defeat (AAAA)Statesboro, (AAAA)Brunswick, and all of their region(AAA)opponents before regontion? Note: Burke Co.19 Ware Co.14

September 5th, 2009

Well everyone, as I Predicted, Lowndes County Beats Peachtree Ridge convincingly. Lowndes County Football Team this year is like Camden County last year. This is a mammonth of a team. The defense is very fast, and very physical. I can’t see any team beating this Lowndes County Team this year. This Lowndes County Team will definitely win the Class AAAAA State Title keeping the championship again this year in South Georgia.
