McNair fires football coach two days before opener

Michael Carvell

McNair High School fired its football coach two days before the team’s season opener.

Roderick Moore, coach of the Mustangs for the last four years, said he was informed of his termination by McNair principal James Jones on Thursday.

“[Jones] said he wanted to ‘move in another direction,’” Moore told the AJC. “I was disappointed. I told him I felt like it was not a wise decision, considering the boys.

“The kids are the most important thing. We’re here for the kids, not because of personal things between adults. It’s about the children, and I think along the way, that message got lost in this situation.”

Roderick Moore (AJC)

Roderick Moore had three playoff appearances in four years and helped place nearly 60 McNair players in college. (AJC)

Jones and DeKalb County athletics director Ron Sebree declined to comment on Moore’s removal, referring all inquiries to county spokesperson Dale Davis.

“There were some issues, some concerns that led to the decision,” Davis said, declining to provide details. “He was removed at the discretion of the principal.”

Moore, 40, posted a 26-18 record in four years, guided the Mustangs to three appearances in the state playoffs, and helped nearly 60 players earn college scholarships.

John April, who is McNair’s athletics liaison, has been named as school’s interim coach and oversaw practice on Thursday. The Mustangs play Stephenson at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at DeKalb’s Hallford Stadium.

Moore said he was called to the principal’s office after “miscommunication” over the team’s pre-game meal last Saturday. Moore said his players were initially scheduled to eat at Panthersville Stadium before the scrimmage. However, Moore said he was informed late last Friday that the county school buses used for transportation would be delayed by two hours.

Moore said he then decided to host the meal at McNair, with parents and booster club members bringing cooking grills on school grounds rather than at Panthersville. Moore thought his principal had been told of the change of plans, but later found out differently.

“[Jones] didn’t know about it, and said that permission wasn’t given by him.” Moore said. “He had concerns over the grills being on campus, and the conversation snowballed from there.”

“I don’t think it’s fair, but sometimes life isn’t fair. I appreciate my experience at McNair, and feel blessed that I was able to touch the lives of so many outstanding young men. I wish nothing but the best for the football program.”

Fired over a miscommunication on the team MEAL? WTF? wish all the best to coach Moore cause as it seems he’s taking the high road here. You’ll get another job. hope the principal is happy with the “direction” his program’s gonna move now.

That’s how the city of Atlanta and Dekalb County schools works…a coach who cares about the kids and is not a part of the “CLIQUE” always gets harassed until they quit or get fired. I suggest home schooling…it’s SAD!!!

Please tell me, this is a joke, right? But I have to admit, I would have gotten the principal’s approval FIRST before I did anything on campus – honestly. I still don’t believe the coach’s action’s warrant being fired – reprimanded, yes, but not fired. Come on people, get a life. Trust me, it’s more to this story.

Man, I hope there is more to this – because I remember AJC doing a article McNair football about a year or so ago, how he helped get the kids scholarships. It was a pretty impressive article, considering how McNair was sending more football players to school on scholarship
then several of the quote unquote bigger named schools in the state.

Nothing that happens in Atlanta schools surprises me anymore. There is a reason Ga schools are a joke nationally, thank God, I moved to a state where common sense is not a lost art. Texas schools are much better and the school board members have the kids best interest at heart.

How petty. Fired over where a meal was being held? We don’t need “the full story”. What’s NOT being told is the principal’s “side”, which was referred to the county spokesman. Sounds more like somebody got their panties in a bunch and wanted to exert their authority. And to do this two days before the opener? Wow.

What a sham or shame! Something here does not add up. If it is true the “Principal” terminated the Coach over a kickofff cookout seems nutz. Somebody is not telling the whole story – and if we wait for one of the School Board politicos to speak – School will be out for winter break or over.

Come clean on the issue Principal Jones or do you have skeletons in your closet too?

Seriously?

Well? It’s journalism and it is a short article, so we’re certainly getting newsworthy information, but we’re also certainly not getting the full story. It could be that Coach was repeatedly overstepping his bounds, it could be that the Principal is anal about to heading off any potential problem from the beginning. It seems though, that the Principal’s problems are only beginning and the Coach has shown public graciousness for the opportunity he had “with the kids.” We’ll see, won’t we?

This is a case in which it makes kids suffer, No need to fire the “Coach”, a man who has helped 60 kids try to better themselves in four years !! This is all about ego’s and power, and somekid will pay the price for a grown up actions. Remember football is a game of emotions as well as physical skills, and when you do this you crush young men dreams…… One final note, Black men this is why we fall, not because of White men, but because we chose not to love each other.

Principals are supposed to be administrators. This one (Jones) doesn’t appear to pack the gear to do the job—Firing a coach a week before the season begins? Why not after the season? Why not last June?
With the info about the grills on campus it looks like a CYA move by the principal, doesn’t it?
And a REALLY great example for McNair students. Beyond contemptible.

In Cherokee COunty the basketball goals were removed from one of the gyms because it was deemed unsafe to play basketball in the gym. Recently a girl broke her arm in the same gym during recess. Go figure how the school system can rationalize that one. Coach Moore’s job loss sounds like a guy in charge who has a personal issue with the Coach and disregards all the good the man does in molding boys into young men.

As graduate of McNair High School and former player under Coach Moore for four years, there are no words to describe the outrage and indignation, I, along with many former players, parents, and well respected persons w/in the community feel about this situation. While many details seem to be left hanging on the part of the school/county administration, I know these things are certain: 1)Coach Moore and his staffed built a consistent football program that encouraged the growth and development of hundreds of young men both on the football field and in the school. 2) It is very hard to get young men to buy into a program that enforces responsibility through hard work and discipline. 3) Coach Moore and his staff (including all who served under Coach Gilbert from 1999-2006) were the best grouping of football coaches the McNair Football Program has ever seen.

For the sake of the future of the McNair Football Program, I seriously hope Coach Moore is returned to his head coaching position, and whatever factions, be they person or persons, that caused his dismissal are reverse their decision… Especially since they obviously have not been involved in the progress Coach Moore has helped invoke for the past 10 years.

To make a move like that with no comment at all, is like sticking up his middle finger to the parents. Hopefully the players will be motivated by this, as oppossed to the opposite. I’m sure there is more to this story. Regardless, bringing grills or serving unauthorized food on a high school campus could be a huge liability issue. If someone were to get burned by a grill or sick from undercooked meat, the school system could face a big lawsuit. I bet the coach overstepped his bounds on other occasions too. If you have a problem with it though, take action and go to the school board. Don’t just yap on some blog or scold Big Mike for grammar errors. Those school employees work for you…the citizens of DeKalb.

I don’t know this school or this coach. But I do know as a former school head, that there is always more to the story than the event that leads up to a dismissal such as this. And it always amuses me that it is the school head who bears the brunt of the criticsm – he or she just doesn’t know what is going on. Believe me, there are many times that it would be easier for a principal or athletic director to post on an electronic bulletin board out front of the school the reasons why an employee was terminated, or removed from certain responsibilities. Nowadays you can’t do that for political and legal reasons. But even in decades past, the principal or AD who was the real pro wouldn’t do that for professional reasons – wouldn’t even allow stories to leak out. Come on here folks – give your school administrators a break. No coach is let go, especially at this time of the year two days before the first game, for one issue like miscommunication or grills on campus. And aside from rumors and innuendos, we’ll never (and should never) hear the Paul Harvey summary, “and now you know the rest of the story.”

News to READER, This is the South and its been like that since before you moved here. It probably was what brought you here, the fact is racial tension will always be a part of the South because it still exsist today. They just find more subtle ways to do so, but this story has nothing to do with race. I know Coach Moore from coaching against him in baseball and most people didn’t know he was the baseball coach at McNair as well. As a fellow coach, I never heard nothing but good things about him on the diamond and the gridiron. That let’s me know it was something personal, regardless of what was said in the argument the kids will be the one that will suffer. That’s the bottom line and what make matters worse the demographics of the area are individuals that need positive males role models. Now the kids have to deal with fact that their beloved principal got rid of one of the more important role models in the school. Pride can be terrible thing

I read a comment about Mays HS…I coached track and football at Mays…that is why I made the comment about “CLIQUES”…if you are in with the clique, you can do WHATEVER and still keep your job. APS and DEKALB are “old boy” networks. Until that is ended, we will keep reading stories like this. By the way, remember what happened to the prior McNair coach? He had to file suit to get justice!!!

I’m like DCB there had to be no other alternative for the principal to fire a respected head coach 2 days before the first game. The whole truth we’ll never know, but there had to be something. So the McNair football will learn another message here and that’s there’s no “I” in TEAM and now someone else has to take the flag. If anything, Coach Gilbert and now Coach Moore has shown other prospective coaches that if you can coach and you care about the kids you too can win at McNair.

Power struggle b/w principal and coach. If in fact, all of his accomplishments are true in regard to the coach, then the principal was overshadowed (thru his own perception) and used this to reassert himself.

I always thought Mr. Moore had a well run football program. His team did not have many resources that other programs had, but he got the most out of those kids at McNair that any coach could have done. I will miss the football coach who always wore those leather boots on the sideline of the game. Good luck in you future endeavors Mr. Moore.

Maybe the principal was ticked off becuase they didn’t save him a plate. What an idiot. We live in a time where the kids best interest doesn’t matter. I work in a school and I know that some principals can be hard to deal with. To me, it sounds like he had someone else in mind and was looking for a reason to get rid of his coach. Happens all the time where I’m from when it comes to personnel decisions.

Folks, there’s something we’re not being told. This is bigger than a cookout and Ron Sebree should fess up and let it out. DeKalb County School System is a disgrace, their athletic facilities are about as sorry as they come and will never get better under the present leadership of the school system and the athletic department. Wake up, DeKalb County…..you’re getting closer to Clayton every day.

As a part of the coaching staff at McNair I can assure you that this was nothing more than miscommunication, there was nothing done so major that would warrant a firing during the first week of the season. If it was so you would be reading about it within this article. This is a complete and total injustice. But more importantly it is the kids that have put in all that work during the spring and summer who suffer b/c they have to deal with this distraction. I is not fair to the Kids, School or the Community. This is what happen when you have people in charge that are more concerned over how much power they can obtain than actually putting students best intrest in the forefront. This is an Outrage!

To “DCB”, “Tbanks”, and “FrankTheFalcon”, and anyone else in this blog talking about the other side to this story.

If there was a problem before this incident it should have been dealt with prior to two days before the first Frickin’ game. Can you imagine the emotion and turmoil these kids are going through. I live in Clayton so I don’t know this coach or the pricipal. However, there have been at least a couple of persons in here who played for the guy singing his praises, so the story of how this man cares about “KIDS” sounds legit. And for that reason “Cooler” heads should have prevailed. Maybe they should have sat down with the President over a beer. My daughter teaches at a Dekalb County High School and yes from what I hear you all can’t brag about being better than Clayton County. I have served as a Football Commissioner for a youth football program in Clayton County as well as a Booster Club President for one of the local high schools, It has to always be about the “KIDS” and not this other BS. My wife teaches in APS. To much “CLIQUE” crap in both of these systems. CYA and looking out for your buddies as it seems with these administrators in DCSS.

RON SEBREE and others time has expired and they need to be booted out! The consession stands from the stadiums are controled by one family that makes ALL the money NEVER…NEVER…NEVER giving back to these teams. Ron Sebree and the consession stand family walks away with the purse every year giving nothing back to the schools. We need to stop buying from these stadiums nothing is coming back to OUR schools.DEKALB DON’T CARE ABOUT THE KIDS ONLY THE MONEY THAT CAN MAKE OFF THE KIDS TALENT!!

first off i want to say that i hav coached with mo for the past three years. he is a great and well respected person that is the heart and soul of mcnair middle and mcnair high. he was the first person to give me an oppurtunity to be a high school coach. im a mcnair alumni and i bleed red and silver .this situation is real foul and some people need to be put on blast. FIRST TO INTERIM COACH JOHN APRIL YOU HAVE WANTED COACH MOORES JOB SINCE U FIRST CAME TO MCNAIR ALSO THIS IS THE SAME COACH THAT COACHED A BASKETBALL TEAM THAT COULD ONLY WIN 4 GAMES OVER THE PAST TWO SEASONS, ALSO YOU HAVE NEVER COACHED FOOTBALL AN A HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL . THIS IS A COACH THAT IS NOT RESPECTED BY THEY STUDENTS AND HE HAS MAJOR HATE FOR OVER HALF OF THE PLAYERS ON THE FOOTBALL TEAM.HE ALSO HAS NEVER EVEN WATCHED THE TEAM PRACTICE . SECOND ON MY LIST IS THE ATHLETIC LIASON MR. HARRELL YOU AE A REAL BUSTER AND MR JONES DO BOY . ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS COACH MOORE CALLED, TEXTED,OR EMAILED U HIS PLANS FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON AND THE THINGS THAT HE WANTED TO DO FOR THE TEAM, BUT YOU DIDNT RELAY THE INFO TO MR JONES BECAUSE YOU WERE CONSPIRING TO GET RID OF MO THATS FOUL. NOW TO MR JONES THE PRINCIPAL THAT HAS NO CONTROL OF THE SCHOOL THAT HE IS RUNNING. YOU TOLD EVERYONE IN THE BUILDING THAT MO WAS FIRED B4 YOU TOLD HIM .NOW THATS FOUL, AND WHEN YOU MET THE COACHING STAFF YOU COULD NOT EVEN LOOK US IN THE EYES THATS A MAJOR SIGN OF BEING SHADY . THEN TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS SPEECH TO THE COACHES HIS PHONE RANG AND HE LEFT THE ROOM ONLY B4 TELLING HIS MINIONS TO “HANDLE THEM” . THE IRONIC PART TO THE WHOLE THING IS THAT AFTER OUR GAME VS CARVER MS. SARA COPLEAND WOODS WHO IS ON THE BOARD OF EDU TOLD US THAT WE WERE DOING A GREAT JOB AT MCNAIR.

I ALSO HAVE TO SAY THAT THE COACHES @ MCNAIR WERE MORE THAN COACHES WERE FATHERS,BROTHERS, FRIENDS, AND COUNSELORS TO THE BOYS THAT WE COACH. WE SPENT MORE TIME WITH THE BOYS THAN WE DID WITH OUR OWN FAMILIES. ALSO THE CRAZIEST THING ABOUT THIS IS WE HAD A TEAM THIS YEAR THAT COULD GO ALL THE WAY AND WIN A STATE TITLE. NOW IT IS LEFT IN THE HANDS OF SOME VERY INCOMPETENT PEOPLE. THIS CANNOT END LIKE THIS. THEY GOT RID OF NOT ONLY COACH MOORE BUT THE ENTIRE STAFF EXCEP 1 TURNCOAT OF A COACH JUAN TORRES AS THE SO CALLED OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR IT IS MY OPONION THAT HE IS THE ONE THAT SOLD MO DOWN THE RIVER AFTER MO GAVE HIM AN CHANCE TO COME BACK TO THE PROGRAM AFTER HE LEFT THE TEAM 2 YEARS AGO. WHAT MAKES IT EVEN WORSE IS THAT HE KNEW WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN ALL THE WHILE AND THATS FOUL.BUT U KNOW WHAT THEY SAY THAT GOD DONT LIKE UGLY.

I can see some issues where there was a cookout on School Property. There is a lot of Red Tape involved there to get clearance to have this. The Principal is the TOP Administrator of the School and he should have been contacted by the Coach and speak to him personally prior to doing this. What is a player had gotten sick from eating something that he should not have eaten? The responsibility solely rest upon the School Principal.

Now on the other hand, terminating this Coach for a mistake was a bit harsh. I believe that this coach should be reinstated if that was the only reason he was discharged from the Head Coach Position. After all, I am a proud parent as well, and have we forgotten about the kids? This Coach according to reports, have a pretty good coaching record. I believe deep down that there is more to this that meets the eye.

I’m not from there and really don’t know much about the coach or the principal. However; I do keep up with the Football Teams in Georgia, mainly Class AAAAA. But if that is all this Coach had violated, the action taken is a bit too harsh.

Wow.. Moore, 40, posted a 26-18 record in four years, guided the Mustangs to three appearances in the state playoffs, and helped nearly 60 players earn college scholarships. I wonder how many of those kids will get to go to college now. If principle’s decision to fire this coach will not increase the number of earn scholarship to colleges then I wonder about his decisions for the classroom. Glad we moved to out the county to educate our kids. Way to go Principal Jones with your great test scores you have plenty of time to deal with this issue. Please stay in Dekalb County!!

Unfortunately, it seems that when you actually find out about one of the “good guys” , the SYSTEM is there to rear their ugly head. The administrators in charge of these schools and school systems couldn’t manage themselves out of a wet, partially torn paper bag. They’re in education because they’d never succeed in the “real world”.

It is obvious to any rational thinking person that when the “county spokesperson” has to speak, especially for a the 2 highest ranking administrators (School Principal and County AD), then the lies, innuendos, and other BS claims are in need of manipulation in order to benefit the school system.

Coach Moore…….run as fast and as far away from that crap as you can. It stinks to high heavens. You should be able to find something else in another environment with more class……and I say THAT with a hint of sarcasm. Remember what you’re dealing with here. Good Luck.

Mr. Jones brought these two people in to make things hard for Coach Mo since he got mad about that meeting. He has done everything like cancel practices for no reason, cancel events for no clear cause, NOT ALLOW FOOTBALL CAMP THIS YEAR!!! FORCE COACH MOORE TO VIOLATE GA LAW AND DCSS POLICY BY COMINGLING FUNDS!! This is something that could have gotten Coach Moore’s teaching certificate taken away by Ga Professional Standards Commission, only Coach Moore REFUSED to do it. (Just so happens that this refusal just recently happened, timing is EVERYTHING isn’t it?) He also tried to force Coach to do what is called “deficient spending” which is NOT permitted by GA LAW or DCSS policy, see the aforementioned Athletics Handbook from the website
http://www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/instruction/athletics/files/Athletics%20Handbook.08.09.pdf

Not to mention, Jones violated Coach Moore’s due process rights, which are established by the Board for grievances. He asked Coach Mo to appear before PARENTS to discuss PERSONNEL matters, which to, is a violation of DCSS policy. Ask Dale Davis, Director of Public Affairs. He says that EVERY TIME YOU ASK HIM ABOUT A PERSONNEL MATTER. He then MADE the parents that attended the meeting sign a letter stating that they would NOT reveal what was said at the meeting after Coach Moore left the room. That, is another violation of rights. The “Open Records Act” allows for ALL minutes and records, of government business(i.e public schools), be made available to the public for view. Board Policy requires that minutes be kept of all such meetings as well as a list of attendees. So if the BOE policy was followed, the Open Records Act should keep such things from being kept private. Unless, the argument is because it was a personnel matter (which means the parents should NOT have been at the meeting because they are NOT DCSS personnel). ….Cont

So to all of you that are wondering what happened, there it is. The difference is that when this happens at the NORTH end of the county, people complain and demand answers and don’t stop until those answers are given. Like the readers of this BLOG, you want answers, you want to know the truth…but how many are so willing to find out or so concerned as to pick up the phone and DEMAND what you have a right to? How many will answer the call and speak up for YOURSELF. Like I told Mo not long ago, you should speak up when things are not going right because you never know when one day that thing is going to be going against YOU. Unfortunately, he found out the hard way! Now, on the north end, law suits, injunctions, protest, and the media would be all over a case like this. In McNair’s community and the community of the WORLD WIDE WEB, which is supposed to have endless resources….WHAT WILL HAPPEN??? How will this play out. It is not about black or white, Rich or poor, but RIGHT OR WRONG. It is about WWJD. It is about WHAT WOULD YOU WANT TO HAPPEN IF **YOU** WERE THE ONE GOING THOUGH THIS!
So…WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO??
If every dog has his day…surely a man who has done what Coach Moore has done should have his day too. BTW: that number of 60 players in school in NOT correct. The actual number is more like 150. Remember, Coach Mo has been there 10 years. That number only speaks for him as Head Coach, which he became HC after they did this SAME THING to the previous HC. I know because I helped him get those guys in school. That includes 29 out of 32 in the class of 2006!! Remember that article. AND he still helps kids that come home after starting college either find a job or find a second chance to be in school and finish their degrees. THERE AREN’T TOO MANY PEOPLE LIKE RODERICK IVAN MOORE!!!

Will the REAL James Jones please stand up? This punishment obviously does not fit the crime. SERIOUSLY! Termination over a cookout? How absurd!!! I know there have been more serious violations of board policy than a cookout. Even so, a written or verbal reprimand would have been more sufficient, unless this was a recurring situation. Your first comment was that you (Jones) were going in a new direction (the generic comment from DCSS authority figures when they can’t or won’t face the person or have no real grounds for discipline or dismissal). This is not the way to treat anybody especially a professional, even though Dekalb is forever commenting about behaving professionally. This was indeed not PREMIER DEKALB. Look at all the negative press Dekalb School System is experiencing: out of 21 high schools only 6 made AYP; grade changing scandal; test changes scandal. Makes you want to say HMMMMMMMMM!!!!!! Remember, you reap what you sow, more than you sow and later than you sow. Obviously, you have forgotten how most of you got where you are. It certainly was not earned nor by merit. You have scratched, clawed, maneuvered and pushed people aside to make your way toward the top; remember what goes up MUST come down. What happened to helping the children? How does a cookout on school grounds violate any DCSS board policy? I’ve been told of cookouts with grills during school time. Who gave permission for them? Was it the cookout or you just wanted to put “your boy” in control, so that he can make more money and not just be in a clerical position as Athletic Director, certifying students’ eligibility? How can you possibly justify to the students you have their best interest at heart when you are clearly not functioning as a leader on whom they can depend?

IT IS ALSO SAD THAT SOME OF THE PARENTS ON THE TEAM WERE AGINST COACH MO FOR SOME REASON. BUT WHEN YOUR KIDS DONT GET RECRUITED BLAME COACH APRIL AND MR JONES,AND MR HARRELL THEY ARE NOT MCNAIR GUYS. WE HAD A STAFF THAT WAS FULL OF MCNAIR ALUMNI AND SWD ALUMNI THAT COULD HAVE ONLY BEEN A ASSEMBLED BY COACH MO. WE TAUGHT THE KIDS THAT YOU MUST HAVE GOOD CHARACTER FIRST AND FOREMOST. COACH MO ESTABLISHED A YOUTH LEAGE CALLED THE DEKALB TROJANS THAT WAS A FEEDER PROGRAM FOR MCNAIR WITH OVER 150 KIDS FROM AGES 6-14 HE ALSO PARTNERED WITH THE SCHOLLS IN THE MCNAIR CLUSTER TO HAVE A FOOTBALL CAMP FOCUSING ON CHARACTER BUILDING FIRST AND FOOTBALL SKILLS SECOND. MY QUESTION IS WHAT ABOUT ALL THESE YOUNG KIDS THAT HAD ASPIRED TO BECOME A MUSTANG ? FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 5 YEARS WE HAD OVER 85 PLAYERS IN THE PROGRAM COULD HAVE HAD 100 BUT DIDNT HAVE ENOUGH HELMETS. BAD MOVE MR JONES I HOPE THAT AFTER THIS YOU CAN SLEEP GOOD AT NIGHT BECAUSE WHAT YOU DONE WAS DISRUPT A WHOLE COMMUNITY TO MAKE A EXAMPLE OUT OF ONE PERSON. HOPE THAT MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE A MAN!!!

THE FIRST PART OF MY MESSAGE DIDN’T POST!!! IT WAS SIMILAR TO THIS…

ITS MESSED UP WHAT THEY DID TO MUSTANG FOOTBALL… Yall Mustang Alumn need to call the Superintendent’s office and go the heck off!! 678-676-2803 and the school board office for Sarah Copeland-Wood at 404-371-1490 or Ms Zepora Roberts… at 404-284-7314 how much MUSTANG PRIDE DO YOU HAVE??? Support Bigg Mo!!! EVERYONE READING THIS MESSAGE THAT KNOW HIM *OR* ME…SHOULD TAKE 5MINS, CALL AND DEMAND ANSWERS!
Also need to put pressure on the media to ask the tough questions on OUR behave. Contact the AJC Publisher – Michael Joseph, 404-526-5889.

Now the real part of the story: This actually began when Mr.Jones came to MHS a few years ago just before football camp. He met with Coach Mo and Me, (as I was second in charge) and discussed our program goals and what his expectations were. He soon saw that his goals and OUR goals were one and the same. He pledged that he was going to support the program and its Coaches. He asked us to make a list of things we needed and problems or concerns that we need addressed. Shortly after that, Coach Moore was informed that he would be removed from the High School and relocated to the Middle School. Coach Moore objected and tried his appeal to every source he could. After he exhausted his listening audience, I, as system-wide administrator, took up the cause placing my job at risk BECAUSE IT WAS THAT IMPORTANT TO ME THAT COACH MOORE STAYED IN THE BUILDING. Yes, the Head Football Coach was not in the building. Not only that, NOT A SINGLE PERSON ON STAFF HAD A POSITION AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. So the program was being run with NO COACHES in the school all day.
I rallied the parents together. I gave them the Board Policies that Governed teacher displacement and the use of “FTE points”. I showed them the LAW as it was written concerning teacher certification. I gave them the rules, the results, and the numbers to the people that mis-applied the rules for this situation.
The parent then called a meeting with Dr. Simpson, Area Superintendent, Ms. Wood, School Board Member, and James Jones, Principal. Of course, when these three tried to pull wool over the eyes of the parents and tell them lies about what the law is, the parents spoke up and showed that they knew exactly what the law and board policies were. The meeting got heated and ended with Dr. Simpson basically calling them ignorant parents and he and Ms. Wood walking out. Afterward, Coach Moore was called into the office and asked why he didn’t stop the parents from “attacking” them at the meeting. He was then “bullied” into asking the parents to call off any additional things they had planned to do. He told them it was, “In the best interest of the program”, that he accept their decision. This came only after they threatened to take serious disciplinary actions against any student that participated in the “walk-out” that was scheduled to happen that day as part of their protest.
Since then, Mr. Jones as been NOTHING IN THE WAY OF SUPPORTIVE. He has done everything to keep Coach Moore from returning to the building. He has made it virtually impossible to do anything positive for the program. We were even called into the office for sending our “recruiting guide” out to all of the colleges in the Country. Yes, we paid (out of OUR pockets) to send a full-color book and DVD highlight of EVERY Junior and Senior prospect in our program to OVER 150 schools). We did this EVERY YEAR since 2003, THAT’S WHY WE GET SO MANY KIDS IN SCHOOL!! But Mr. Jones felt like by sending out these materials TO COLLEGES, we showed them that our kids weren’t as smart as the rest of the schools. Nevermind the fact that this, each year, resulted in scholarships for these kids that might not have otherwise been made known to the school that offered them. HOW MANY OTHER COACHING STAFFS DO THIS??
Each and every time we did something that made the program stand out as “great” or “positive”, we got called into the office and asked “who authorized” us to be great basically.
Then, when we allowed him to “micro-manage” the team by flooding him with every little detail, he complained that we were not running the team if we needed his input on every little thing. That’s were his two flunkies, Mr. Harrell (not COACH Harrell), and Mr. April came in.

This is absolute garbage. I’ve kept up with this man from a far for years and the impact he has had on these young men is tremendous. He has sent so many kids to college in a school where many young men don’t see that road as a viable option. The principal needs to be fired for not doing what’s in the best interest of the kids. Coach Moore got results on and off the football field. I hope the South Dekalb community takes issue with this and write their local school board to have Coach Moore reinstated and the principal fired.

I went to high school with Coach Moore aka Mo Boy. He was always a stand up dude. I followed his career and heard about all the great things he was doing as far as getting these kids scholarships who coming from a hard, tough, urban neighborhood, otherwise might have been breaking into cars, selling dope, carjacking, etc. Unless he REALLY did something bad, and something TERRIBLE is being left unsaid, he needs to be rehired with the quickness. PLEASE call the Dekalb Co. School Board and McNair High if you agree.

For the past 10 years, Coach Moore has put his blood, sweat, and tears into the McNair football program. Under his watch, along with former head coach Johnny Gilbert. McNair football has come from the door mat of Dekalb County to a program known across the state. For example, my freshman year in the football program we were 3-7, sophomore year 0-10, junior year 8-3, senior year 10-3. After my career was done I went on to earn a full scholarship to a major D-1 school, I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree. Along with a host of other student-athletes that came through McNair. Not only did he send me to school, he sent over hundred kids to school and not just for athletics. Many of McNair alums went on to better there education as regular students. Coach Moore is a god-fearing, humble man. He taught us responsibility, accountability, and to always put god first in whatever you as a man decide to do. For the sake of the young men and women at McNair Sr. High School, I hope that Coach Moore is reinstated. Oh yeah, along with Coach Moore the entire coaching staff has been gutted. So who has the best interest of the kids at heart. You go and fire an established coach whom has proven that he can win and get kids out of South Dekalb cty on to better things. Then you hire a coach who took a prominent basketball program at McNair to the crapper. This coach went 2-23 with the basketball team. Whom couldnt handle 12 kids. What makes anyone think that he can handle 80 kids. Come on people lets be real. The decision that was made will be regreted after saturday. Also to the parents who really wanted to see this happen. Lets see how your kids benefit now!!!!!

Mo is the TRUTH. Know this man from church and know him to be the real deal to young men and his faith is unwavering. Mo, keep moving man. There is much better awaiting you. Obviously, this beauracrat is NOT thinking of the young men you’ve positively affected. He probably does not have their best interest at heart and is clearly power tripping. Best to you Mo. My heart goes out to those young men that have lost their coach.

Moore was an asset to the football program. James Jones is childish and trival. Jones is the one that should be under investigation. He doesn’t practice what he preaches. McNair has lost many good teachers that had the true interest of the kids at heart because Jones can’t grow up and stop holding grudges. Don’t worry Coach Moore…his day will come!!!

Somewhere up the blog, I read a comment that Coach Moore was the best football coach McNair has ever seen. I don’t disagree. I grew up a stone throw away from old Walker High School, kept tabs on the football program since the first year of existence as McNair back in 87/88 (when Fleetwood, Big Joe, and the boys were doing their thing). I didn’t go to school there but always felt the connection since it was the neighborhood school and many of my friends and neighbors went there. I have been proud to see the Football Program doing so well despite many of the challenges.

There have been many negative comments about a Dekalb County Athletic Programs/Facilities and they are probably warranted. But remember the programs that are being compared against have money pouring in from the community, boosters, and in some instances former players. McNair is in a lower middle-class area, so there is no influx of funds coming in from the community and boosters. But despite all of this, Coach Moore obviously created a tight-knit football program that, in my opinion, beat the odds. He deserves better than this and justice will be served in some manner……if you don’t believe in KARMA…..keep watching his outcome.

James Jones you should be ashamed of yourself! Moore was for the kids. Grilling without prior approval is the reason for ousting someone good for the students. Mr. Jones you should be investigated for flirting with the teachers and pursuing the younger ones into your bed. You should be investigated for lying to your wife and about your age. Your slick and sly ways should be investigated. We see you. I see you and know what you’re all about. Your illegal antics to improve the school should be investigated. Forcing teachers to pass kids should be investigated. Graduating kids who have missed over 50 days should be investigated. Transferring excellent teachers because of your personal indifference. Shame, Shame!!! Careful…Mr. Jones, God is watching you and he may not be pleased.

REEZE, If this is the entire story, I agree with you. This is a shameful dismissal. However if there is more to the story, why is everyone in the so called “media” today so fearful of simply “telling the truth”? (At least as they see it.) Not saying that the entire truth has not been spoken. But before dismissing someone who appears to be a sensible head coach, if there is any more to the story it should be made clear to the public before the dismissal.
I believe there might be more to the story. But not about Coach Moore. It will turn out to be about the administrators.

i am a former mcnair student not player and coach moore impacted my life also. first of all, let me expalin who he was to the mcnair community. 1st wed all know he was the football coach he was also the baseball coach, wrestling assistant coach, mc of the school pep rallys and he knew how to get everyone hyped bout being a mustang for that momment u forgot about what was goin on in the streets. this man did the morning anouncements i mean this guy really cared i heard this guy voice every day for four years man it is kinda like loosing skip carry. i remember when moore had the boys go help katrina victims in 2005 he sent countless guys to college. i remember coach moore riding through the hood like the police sweeping his players off the street corners i remember moore raiding house dangerous house parties andmaking his players leave saying making sure these guys stay out of trouble i remember moore calling his player and there parents to make sure thaT THEY RE DOING HOME WORK AND NOT SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME ON THE VIDEO GAME SOUNDS LIKE A FATHER HUH WELL MOST OF THESE KIDS DONT HAVE FATHERS AND HE ACTUALLY TOOK IT AMONG HIMSELF TO PLAY THIS ROLE. SOME OF THESE PLYS CAME FROM FAMILIES FULL OF DRUG USER AND DEALERS AND HE WAS THEIR ONLY POSTIVE MALE ROLE MODEL. I MET MOORE IN THE 9TH GRADE I HAd a mouth full of gold teeth and had onbaggy pants but moore did not judgeme and he stayed on me and talked to about choices like i was one of his players moore is mcnair we already lst gilbertand have not been the sam since now moore i just hope those mustangs still play hard for moore and give me some to chee bout because i amsad rite now it feel like i lost a family member i am so heart broken now . moore is respected by his peers if u dont belive me read the article after last years mlk game and the quote from coach jarvis. i hope every one mcnair fans, dekalb county fans atlanta cobb gwinett south georgia i dont care where u from rally aroundthese boys and this coach

Thank you all for your support, but my boys need your prays and support, I will always be a Mustang but if things don’t change I have to move forward. And McNair Football will move into a new direction without me. I love the McNair Community for all the support it has shown me the past 10 years. I will not throw rocks at anyone because God will handle the people who hurt his children and right now 80 kids are hurting and someone will have to account for their actions and decisions. So to all the AJC Bloggers thank you and hope to see you at the game I will be on the 50 yard line at the top supporting my boys. I am surprised to see a “leader” of to day using tranactional process such as what Principal Jones has used. Those type of leadership modes are so outdated. Transformation leadership principles should have been applied to ensure that Coach Moore continued to coach his team. I feel that very little thought was given to the impact and that much of this was do to a lack of strategic planning on how the impact would be on the school, team, community and with as less resistance. Dekalb County Board of Education needs to seriously look at how decisions are made of this magnitude and how they can impact the entire program. Every professionally trained leader knows that inorder to have buy in for change you must first make people feel included in the process. If Mr. Jones was truyly on the up and up with his decision he would have given other stakeholder a chance to buy in. I hope the school board quickly recognized the lack of importance that Mr. Jones have given to state and federal employment laws before he makes a decision of this magnitude again.
Yes, I have known Rod Moore since he was a young boy in he is a magnificent young man. He will continiue to florish.

My suggestion is since Coach Moor has made such an significant impact on these Kids, the parents who hold the power, should ALL at one time go to the Board Of Education and demand that Coach Moore be reinstated.

Yes! Everybody is right, there is more to this story and I know what. From what I’m hearing Coach Moore is not a certified teacher at the high school level. So you bumb fools want a man to teach MATH at the school with no certification. The Gerogia Law states that everybody has to be highly trained. Coach moore had over six years to get his certification and he could not pass the test. Its all about accountabilty. With this NCLB Act and McNair hasn’t made AYP in years and one of the areas that are holding them back is Math. I dont blame the principal. We all say its about the kids. what about the other 1300 students in the school that principal Jones is trying to help by getting a teacher in there that can add 2+2. Thanks and I’m gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I coached at McNair for four years with Coach Moore and I will say that nobody has ever cared for those kids at McNair the way Big Mo cared for them. He has taught those kids how to be men off the field as well as on the field. McNair has lost a great leader in Coach Moore but the kids has lost a great father feature.

Dirty DeKalb

This a fascinating story, but not very surprising. The DeKalb County School System may be worse than Clayton’s. The thing is: they haven’t gotten caught. Promotions are given in this county to the undeserving, while others are never offered an interview. Jobs are posted on PATS, but individuals are already designated for those positions prior to the posting. Individuals are giving promotions based upon who they know, ie, their mothers, fathers, uncles, aunts, girlfriend, or boyfriend has some big position in the county office or know someone in the county. Better yet, they are a friend of a board member. When you attempt to transfer to another school or county, administrators often send a negative reference or call the school or county that you are trying to go to-to block your transfer. Your job with DeKalb is decided after your interview when you are on 285 or 20 on your way home. And low and behold, if you ever disagree with an administrator, you name will be passed on throughout the county as a trouble-maker, unless you are the chosen few that I mentioned above. If have seen incompetent board members and administrators throughout my tenure in DeKalb. Although I retired some years ago, I still love students. Mr. Smith is merely doing what he’s seen and heard others do. I’m sure that there are several stories that others could share about how they were done it by an administrator in DeKalb. If Whistle Blower only knew. There are a lot of stories that could be shared about the DCSS. I’ve seen people get promotions when they didn’t have certification to become an administrator, and others received promotions immediatley after getting their leadership certification, while others have been waiting and waiting and had to go to other counties to get a position.

Coach Moore, you should have said nothing and let your parents and team speak for you. Now, I’m sorry to say that you name will be dirt in the DCSS. That’s how it works, especially with the people who are in charged. I wish you the best though. Oh and after this year, get the heck out of DeKalb cause your GTOI and GTDRI will probably be unsatisfactory this year…thanks to Mrs. Jones.

We was at a parent meeting with Mr. Jones and Coach Moore on friday night and Coach Moore has received his Master of Education to make him certified K-12 in Physical Education. So all of us as parent can see that this is personal because Coach Moore was the Head Coach and was teaching at the middle school and still was winning and still putting kids in school so whats up with that. Mr. Jones would not answer our questions wouldn’t look us in our eyes which is very shady an insulted our intelligence talking down to us giving us no reasons for Coach Moore dismissal. Coach Moore has be the foundation of McNair the pass 8-9 years and our kids not only football players but the student body can always count on “Coach Mo” Mr. Jones this is NOT OVER our kids, our parents, and our community is going to show you our power. McNair is a pitiful high school to be at anyway. The principal and principal of instructions are the ones who need to be fired because they are a disgrace to the education system. They have know clue how to run a school. All they know how to do is just please the folks on the school board and county office. The morale of the teachers is very low and there is no order in the school.

[...] No further details were provided by the school; Moore said he was initially called to the principal’s office over “miscommunication” over having cooking grills on campus for a meal before a scrimmage, and then conversation “snowballed from there.” [Click here to see the previous blog on Moore's firing] [...]

I guess you FINALLY did it huh? All the talk of how you want to be the Head Coach at McNair is starting to come to life huh?

Funny how YOU are the only one in there with James Jones everyday….
YOU are the one that told Coach Ferjustie NOT to come back up there (he is the REAL DB Coach)
YOU are the one that always have been trying to sabotage the program while giving the image of building it up
YOU are the ONLY Coach that did not play College Football (and you weren’t even good in HS)
YOU think for one minute they gone let a punk with a DeVry diploma lead young men??
YOU really think that YOU are the example for what our kids should be??
YOU really think that YOU are going to be able to get someone in school like MO
YOU really think that DeVry going to start up a football team so you can use your connection to get kids in?
YOU are the biggest Benedict Arnold EVER!!!
YOU are a real loser!!
YOU have to try to run everyone off so that the boys will have to respect you BY DEFAULT!!??
YOU should know that no matter how hard you try, they NOT going to respect you
YOU should know that they only listen cause they HAVE to
YOU should be the one, as a former Mustang, telling them what to do to bring Coach Mo back
YOU are the one that really wanted him gone
YOU finally get to call the defense huh?
YOU gave up 42 point (most were from Stephenson JV)
YOU have a High School mentality about football that’s why you can never thrive as a Coach

YOU ARE THE BIGGEST DISGRACE AS A MUSTANG AND YOU SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO PUT ON THE RED AND SILVER AGAIN

Apparently, after reading half of these comments, Coach Moore must have done a lot of changing since the time when I was there…..He had just begun as a coach and he used to try to terrorize people….. the guy was trying to jack up the smaller kids for reasons regarding a need to feed some kind of power trip he was on. I don’t know about these other people on here, but to me, Moore was definitely arrogant and obnoxious at times and I really didn’t deserve the treatment he gave me for the short time I was there. He may have been the sole reason I left the school. That is the honest truth………. But who knows what has happened over the past 10 years. Maybe he became a better person and coach once he began to realize that his position gave him the ability to impact people’s lives. I swear though…. he threw a wrench in mine….. and this is just a story from another perspective… since everyone else makes people out as saints. HOWEVER, the reason for being fired was bogus…. but it takes two people to tango…. And I’m sure both men played their parts to perfection to where it was a big mess when they spoke with each other over the situation. Either the decision gets reversed and they both work together or both should go.

WELL IF YOU REALLY WANT TO BE SERIOUS…. COACH MOORE HASN’T DONE MUCH OF ANYTHING FOR ANYBODY UNTIL HE GETS MOST OF THOSE PLAYERS TUTORS!!! IMAGINE HOW MANY DIVISION 1 SCHOOLS ARE TURNED OFF BY THE GRADES THEY SEE FROM DEKALB SCHOOLS…. OK I SEE THAT YOU WANNA SHOW THE SCHOOLS THAT THEY CAN PLAY BALL BY SENDING THEM A HIGHLIGHT TAPE… BUT CAN YOU SHOW THE SCHOOLS THAT THE PLAYERS CAN SURVIVE A COLLEGE CLASSROOM?! LET’S TALK ABOUT HOW MANY OF THOSE FORMER PLAYERS ACTUALLY FINISHED COLLEGE……….

I remember one time…… at football camp…. Coach Moore decided it was a great idea to wake us up for hell night in the trailer using firecrackers…….No he didn’t throw the firecrackers outside on the ground so they would pop and scare everyone…. he actually threw them INTO the trailer where people were actually sleeping!! YES!! He really cared for the kids…. especially the one who woke up with a big patch of hair missing from the side of his head because the firecrackers burned his hair off…. I believe i saw MO heartlessly shrug about it……..
THAT’S THE COACH MO I REMEMBER………. and trust, i have plenty of memories just like the one mentioned above…..

But….. people change….. apparently MO changed…..Let you all tell it……
Check this…… If i came in and led the team to a 10-3 record……how many of my players do you think would get recruited…….. a lot right? Success breeds success….. Stop acting like one guy is determining your future…..Do what he did for you on your own……. win with the next coach….work harder…. DO YOUR SCHOOLWORK!!! BELIEVE IN YOURSELVES!!! Stop sitting around and crying like your lives are over……. WHAT IF I TOLD YOU THAT YOU STILL WOULD HAVE LOST TO STEPHENSON 42-0 EVEN IF MOORE WAS STILL THERE?!?!?!?! WHAT IF YOU ALL WENT 3-7 FOR THE YEAR?!?! WHAT IF MOORE GOT FIRED FOR GOING 3-7?! HOW MANY OF YOU WOULD GET SCHOLARSHIPS THEN?! Pick yourselves up and move on! Or else you won’t go anywhere!!! AND THEN WHAT!!! YOU’RE GONNA SIT AT HOME AND BLAME MR. JONES OR WHOMEVER FOR YOU….. I REPEAT……. YOU…… NOT GETTING INTO COLLEGE??? TIME TO BE REAL…. BETTER DIG DEEP OR READ MORE BOOKS……

spoken like a real scrub that never touched the field or paid attention in class to control his own destiny with his grades. Don’t be sour because you didn’t have the academic or athletic skills to go to a D1 college. If what you say is true, then shame on who ever took a patch of hair out of a kids head, but that does not minimize what a man has done for the school, team, AND its community.

Success does breed success. That’s why McNair has sooo many players that are in D1 and other division schools. Obviously, you don’t know that it is actually HARDER to get into a lower division school because THERE IS NO SLIDING SCALE like it is on FBS level school. Which means that he won with people with less talent than others. Just cause you win, doesn’t mean you have a team full of FBS level talent, sometimes it means that you have a FBS level Coach that brings the best out of his team. That raises them up to a level otherwise not obtained.
Lastly, Coach Moore not only gets his players the academic help that they need, he gets them ACT/SAT help if they need it, signs them up to take it, picks them up to go take it, then rides to the different sites to makes sure that they get in if they were on the “walk-up” list.
And to answer your other question about graduation…..at what point does the PARENT suppose to assume that role and responsibility? Did you want Mo to hold your hand through college has well? Did you not have the wherewithall to be able to be a success. Are we now saying that if he helps prepare you for college, he has the responsibilities that include monitoring you while there and seeing that you graduate. That in addition to the 80+ boys that his is also supposed to be their teacher for EVERY freaky subject including how to be a man? Why don’t you just spill the beans and say it….You mad at Mo cause he wasn’t your daddy aren’t you. Or, maybe you just mad cause he isn’t God because only God could live up to the expectations you are placing on a HS football coach. Too bad college football players don’t have Coaches. Someone should look into that and see if we can start that up! College coaches being at, and responsible for, college practices and players.
You get to post on this blog like everyone else, just know that for every grain of sand that shows up against Mo (whom is human and thusly, NOT perfect), a beach will show up in his favor.

RE: Statement of Support for Coach Roderick Moore

To Whom this May Concern:

I, Anita King, am writing this letter of concern for the, what I feel, is an unethical dismissal of Coach Moore.

On Tuesday, August 25, 2009 there was a meeting called by Mr. James Jones, McNair Sr. High School Principal. This meeting was called together for the booster club cabinet, Selena Hamilton (president), Victor Sheppard (VP), Anita King (Secretary), Cowanna Davis (Treasurer), school Principal, Mr. Jones, Administrator of Athletics, Mr. L. Harrell, and Coach Moore. This meeting was to inform us as a whole what was going on with some actions of our Head Coach, Coach Moore, that took place over the weekend of August 22, 2009.
There was an overseen communication between the Coach, Mr. Moore, and the Principal, Mr. Jones about the activities that needed to take place at the school for the purpose of feeding the team, and a DJ playing music at the game that night. After only being asked 3 questions by Mr. Jones, question #1) Who authorized the grilling at the school on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009? Coach answered, “I did, and I will take full responsibility for that.” #2) Who authorized the DJ at the game? Again, Coach answered, “I did, I will take full responsibility for that, but I did receive the ok from Mr. Cammat. I didn’t know I had to also get the ok from the school because it wasn’t on the school property. I used the DJ that the school uses for every event given by the school, like the proms. Since it was jus a Jamboree game, I just wanted to add a lil’ flavor for the kids. ” #3) Have you gotten your paper work done for your certification? Coach answered “I have contacted my school, and I am waiting for them to fax my results over.”
With the things that needed to be discussed about the mishaps and the actions of Coach, I was very shocked that Coach Moore was asked to leave the meeting, seeing how it was concerning him (Coach Moore) and his wellbeing. After Coach Moore left the room, Mr. Jones told us this will now began our “Executive Session, of our meeting.” Mr. Jones had the remaining of us to sign an Executive Cabinet Session Guidelines form. (Please See Attached Copy). After so Mr. Jones immediately began to tell us of some things that coach had being doing that has brought him, Mr. Jones, to considering going in a different direction in the coaching staff. Mr. Jones also stated that he had given Coach Moore a dead line of August 28, 2009, to have everything he needed in order to stay employed with the school. At this point there has not been any decision made as to weather or not Coach will be dismissed. Again there was a dead line given, Aug. 28, 2009.

So, as of Wed. Aug. 26, 2009, we have come to this line of actions: not Friday Aug. 29, 2009 that was told to us as the deadline given, Mr. Jones called a meeting with all football players to inform them that there’s a new Head Coach of the team. Then on Friday August 29, 2009 another meeting was called for a question and
answering session on the decision of dismissing Coach Moore. In attendance; Parents of Players, Coach Moore & supporters, and to answer the questions, Mr. Jones. We left the meeting still with NO answers. To every question we asked, we were told, by Mr. Jones, to speak with, Dale Davis and/or his Attorneys. It was very obvious that Principal Jones has been given advice to not say much from his advisors, but if this is a fact then the information that he voluntary gave up to the booster cabinet and administrator of athletics on the night of Aug. 25, 2009, in the meeting was unethical on his behave. There was personal information told to us about Coach Moore, like an isolated incident of a weapon found in the equipment bag of the football team, still no write up on Coach Moore. There was an incident of a child getting a staff infection, for which Coach was being blamed for, saying that Coach was not keeping the equipment clean enough. Once again no write up. It was also heard at this meeting about Mr. Jones took money from an account, coach account, to pay for the 2008 football banquet. If Principal Jones is advised not to speak on the situation at hand, then why was he so willing to give up SO MUCH information behind closed doors and without Coach present? After to many unanswered questions, we asked Mr. Jones if he can not answer the questions, for what ever reason advised to him by his advisers, would it be possible to have the coach himself come up and speak. There was a question that I, Anita King, feel was one of the most important questions. “If such or so many said insubordination was done by Coach Moore, then as with any given organization before firing an individual there should be or has to be a paper trail of written warnings, write ups, and possibly suspensions that leads up to the termination of the individual, is there a paper trail on Coach Moore, or was this one weekend the cause for dismissing him?” At this point Coach Moore to the floor and answered, what we feel, was as truthfully as he could. He told us that he had never been wrote up or suspended for any said insubordination. Coach Moore has always stood for and teaches all students that has ever comes his way, especially the football players (his sons), “you stand up and be a man, if you did it you fess up to and take the consequences!!!!!!! “
My opinion of Coach, by dealing with him for the last 5 going on 6 years, he stands for the truth, doing what’s right, teaching how to take the high road & not the easy road, he stands for FATHER in all that it stands for when one is missing from the family, keeping it REAL when most will only say what they think you need to hear so that they can move on to the next thing on there agenda, he is the true meaning of I CAN and I WILL, Coach Moore is the one who steps up to the plate when you cant even see a way to make that son, of a single mother, sit up straight, stand tall, walk a straight line, pull up them pants, tuck in that shirt, mow that loan, take out that trash, DO THAT WORK and PULL UP THOSE GRADES so that you CAN AND WILL BE SOMEONE in life!!!!!!!!!!!

In closing I would like to say, to take a MAN like this away from well deserving kids that need, love, want and most of all RESPECT him, for reasons at this point what has become a very openly seen personal vendetta against Coach, will be a very devastating plow to many lives. I will say that we also respect the authority of the Principal, Mr. Jones, and the Administration at McNair High School, and will also respect there decision, if there has been treatment, and the proper procedures be taken to assure the respect and well being of a person that has foreseen the safety and well being of our kids for the pass several years, the one and only COACH RODERICK MOORE.
This statement is written to you with an open mind and broken heart. I ask and I thank you for your time and proper handling of this matter at hand.

Sincerely,

Anita R King

It appears, this blog has been mis-used in so many different ways. This was a place to voice opinions on what happen at the school with the coach. Not a place for personal attacks on any one that was involved. YES it is devastating to hear such things have happen. However this is a time we are suppose to be standing as one. And showing support for Coach Moore as he deserved.

King Solomon: I commend you on the approach which was taken.
This is how a situation should be handled.

anonymous guy who was around: The children and parents are hurt. Let them have their time. True the coach may have done his part and help the players got into college on scholarships, yet it is up the student to continue the hard work and stay in school. Not the coach.

As far as the teaching certificate: He would not be able to hold a job in Dekalb County not just at the school. The school system. And if there were a situation going on it was just a clerical error. One may hear all of gossip mill, yet not know the truth. So that is a subject that need to be left alone. No one can put their life on the life and testify that what you are saying is really true. So leave it alone. Im pretty sure some of you are students and need to be studying instead of taking personal attacks at others on a blog.

Just as someone else’s post stated, students if you want to take a stand and you really mean there are ways you can demostrate things and have the right to.

Well, what happen was unfair & crazy.
I hope all this is resolved in timely manner.

To Coach Moore
mo my heart is very sadden when i heard of the news you have been dismissed because of the job you were chosen to do. It takes a special person chosen by god for the job you have done for our kids. The 1st hat that god gave you he instilled in you his spirit. From that spirit many branches
grew. Love for other, respecting others, reaching out for others, standing srtong before others, and letting other young men know you have a choice in life. You taught them to make the right decision.
Not only were you a coach, you were there minister, to some you were fathers, for some you were big brothers, some you made it possible they could eat, you made sure that every child that came in contact with you shoes on there feet, and a man of your stature, many demonic spirits will come against you but none of them will hold you fast. Your steps are ordered by the lord and there is nothing man can do against you. Stay strong and continue doing what god has called you to do. Success will always follow you, the booster club are still working on thing for you….LOVE YOU VAN AND TRAVIS (TWO BIG ONES)(MUSTANG, PRIDE, MUSTANG, PRIDE)

WTF!!!!! Why would you fire him. I played for SWD, but I had the chance to play for Coach Moore for one week. And I could tell that he was a good man. And why don’t the players have a say so in situations like this. I know if my coach got fired abruptly over miscommunication I would be pissed and not feel like playing anymore. Dekalb County sucks, they always fire ppl that have a positive affect on the kids.

Yea “hot” you are right Coach Mo is responsible for football players having babies. B/C we all know that when a student plays football that all responsibilities of the parent is handed over to the Head Coach. Let’s be real!!!!!

Once again injustice lands on the door steps of the black community and we take it lying down and do nothing. As tax payers we must demand an explanation immediately. But like most black citizens, it’s not an issue to us because it’s not our kid being affected by decisions made by ego influenced personality clashes. Lets not hide behind cowardly excuses like “wait until the whole story is told”, and demand that Crawford Lewis for once do his job. The parents of every kid at Mcnair High School not only deserve an explanation but it is their right. Our tax dollars employ these people, they don’t tell us how their going to handle our kids, we are suppose to tell them. I ask all you people with your silly cowardly blogs who want to hide behind your self inflated educated responses to sit this one out because kids lives are at stake. Keep your eyes an ears open if you want to help do something about this. A protest is what’s needed. Organized unity moves mountains. These people who abuse their power do this because we sit back and allow them to. A great man once said “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”. It’s the kids at Mcnair today, it Might be my kids or yours tommorow!

Wow! What have we become? We wonder why our kids are lost and don’t show us the respect that we showed our parents. Our parents were the ones that boycotted buses, organized sittins, desegregated schools, were attacked by dogs for diminstrating, lynched, beat, raped among many other injustices, because they refused to leave it alone. To anybody out there who think this should be left alone, I hope you understand that the very computer that you are blogging from would not be at your fingertips if somebody had left it alone. Because great people didn’t leave it alone we have the opportunities we have. And to continue to watch injustices happen in our communities make the ones that sacrificed their lives so that we may succeed died in vein. Dr.King would have been a millionaire 50 times over had he taken the money offered to him to just merely “leave it alone”. That’s what wrong with our community now . We leave it alone. The drug dealer move in our neighborhood, we leave it alone. The criminals know that in our community there is safe haven because we leave it alone. And when the chicken come home to roost we wonder how our kid got on drugs or begin a life of crime. We left it alone and allowed it to manifest in our communities. And when it manifest it don’t stop at the low level of street crimes such as drug dealing and other criminal acts. It spread to the level of attacking our children in the school system. Satan has no bounderies and if we don’t fight back we are doomed. Talk about this issue, don’t just leave it alone. Go to your church and talk to your pastors,deacons,co-workers,relatives,friends and who ever else that will listen. God works in mysterious ways. This started out about a coach but he was just gods pon. Now exposure is being brought to the people thats leading our children. In situations like this we can’t be afraid. Everyone who is on the side of justice is important. We must organize in unity because the more voices the better chance of being heard. We must not be afraid to call names that is responsible for the injustices not just at Mcnair but through out the county especially south dekalb. Starting with Crawford Lewis who never seems to show his self when it concerns black school issues but on the north side of the county when our white brothers and sisters speak he moves. It is not our white neighbors fault that he is that way, they just make sure he do his job on their side of town because they understand their rights and they know that their tax dollars pay his salary. We could learn something from their unity. Let’s call him out to Mcnair High School to address the parents in this matter. Not his assistant but him. He’s not that busy, this is why we pay him. If he can’t come address a serious issue dealing with our kids then we should ask him to resign. By the way , to all the parents a Mcnair, My son attends Miller grove High. But I want you to know that I love you all and stand with you 100%.
