Poll Talk: MLK to test Southwest DeKalb’s No. 1 ranking

Grayson had something to prove with its No. 2 ranking (and even a No. 5 ranking in one national poll) against defending Class AAAAA champ Camden County. Grayson did pretty well, winning 14-10. Linebacker Terry Williams looked like the best player on the field, but I don’t want to digress.

Now, it’s Southwest DeKalb’s turn to validate its ranking. SWD is No. 1 in AAAA, and its opponent this week is M.L. King, the No. 8 team in AAAAA. Should be a great game just to watch the running backs – SWD’s Ken Malcome and MLK’s Mack King.

Here are some questions for you:

Should Grayson be No. 1? The Rams beat Lowndes (our No. 1) last season, and they just beat the champs.

Of course, Peachtree Ridge beat Grayson last year. Should P’Ridge be No. 1?

Did anyone notice that Cobb County was 2-0 in the Corky Kell Classic? Walton and McEachern each were underdogs.

MLK does not have a good defense and the wrong player is starting at quarterback. SWD should win by at least 17 points.

And Marist is in AAAA, not AAAAA

“● St. Pius at Marist: It will be the first game on Marist’s new artificial turf. Marist is No. 4 in AAAAA.

● Griffin at Dunwoody: Griffin is No. 6 in AAA. Dunwoody, which finished 12-1 last season, is playing its first game under new coach Michael Youngblood, a former Tucker assistant.”

Also, I think there is a bias against Grayson. I remember these guys from AJC ranked N Gwinnett # 1 in the state 2 years ago – without earning it. Grayson on the other hand has to earn it. Why? Grayson is Grayson (a nice small town that has more of a country feel than N. Gwinnett and Suwanee. Can you imagine if N. Gwinnett beat Camden, went undefeated last year (up unitl the payoff lost), and beat Lowndes (as Grayson did).

Man Class 5-A jumping off this yr, with Camden playing Grayson already and Lowndes having to play peachtree in two weeks. We be separating the pretenders from the contenders early this yr. Doug chill out be patient if Lowndes lose against peachtree the #1 ranking will be grayson. If Lowndes beats peachtree on the other hand they might deserve the #1 ranking.Clearly the top 4 teams in the state are Grayson,Lowndes,Peachtree,Camden. Good win this weekend even if ya’ll special teams almost gave the game away. Camden will be okay once the young talent settle in and replace that the QB. Southwest will beat MLK this friday, MLK is not the #8 best team in the state they are overated. We will see how far Southwest Dekalb will go with their talent loaded team. Dont be another Stephenson!!!

Look for Stephensen and SWD to represent Dekalb County very well this year. Grayson is awesome but jury is still out on Lowndes, Camden and Peachtree Ridge. I believe Stephensen would beat any of those teams. There is no hands down super power this year in 5A or 4A.

Etowah at McCeachern in two weeks will be another good one. I was initillay worried about the Indians before this past weekend and justifiably so,after McCeacherns’ performance against Brookwood. Etowah was what I would call flat, and had chances to put the game away after a slow start, but just did not. Starr’s Mill seemed better prepared than last year, or perhaps Etowah just lacks the big play weapons. I don’t see a shootout against McCeachern like some might ,but rather a very physica, low scoring, time of possession, field position game. Maybe Etowah’s only chance in this one. More to come…

Pops, I agree that the McEachern will be the first of many tough Region 5-AAAAA matchups. Etowah as a tough D and will have to match up well to McEachern’ Offense. I just hope it is a low scoring game (Etowah’s advantage).

I’m a SWD grad and we’ve been lacking a quarterback ever since Quincy Carter left. You can’t win a state championship without having a pretty QB. I would rather for them to start off ranking in the top 5 (maybe 5th) and work your way up if you don’t have a strong QB.

Poor ole Lowndes skimmed by a 4A mediocre ball club. We might win 5 games this year, I’m gonna continue to cheer for my handicapped Vikings though.Peachtree will probably beat us by 4 touchdowns. SWD has had quality QB’s over the years since Quincy left. Brandon Jones and Eric Ward to name few. Eric lead Richmond to the 2008 NCAA Football Championship Subdivision champion(formly 1-A) as a Junior. It’s always been the talent that has to over come the coaching at SWD. plain and simple. This year they have better than usual talent.

Great win by Walton on Saturday. Their offensive line looks great. One question, can this team throw the ball? They won’t get too far this year once teams put everyone in the box like Norcross did in the second half.

Slalom,
Picking up on a topic we were discussing last week. I know what you are saying about transfers. The thing about these two particular boys is that they were not recruited by Gainesville, they both chose to go there of their own free will. I know Cole Smith personally and I know Spragues’ dad, and both said they transferred because of more scholarship opportunities. Sprague wouldn’t have a problem getting offers anyway, but they wanted to see what was out there. Cole Smith is just a junior,so this will allow them to get his name and tapes out early. The difference between North Hall and Gainesville is that at NH, the parents have to handle getting the kids tapes out, where at Gainesville, they have someone there that does nothing else but try to find scholarships for these kids. Sprague probably could have gotten an offer from wherever he wanted, he’s that good, but why take chances when you know that your name and tapes are going to be put out there for you, and all that you have to do is concentrate on playing football?

Okay I’m back everybody. Welcome back football fans from you prospective schools. I’m from Region 3-AAAAA, and I am a Bradwell Institute Tiger Fan. As I predicted last year and was right, Camden County Wildcats became the Region 3-AAAAA Region Champions and the Undisputed Class AAAAA State Champions. They were under-rated and they proved everyone wrong.

This year, Everyone has Grayson to be the State Champions. Well As it may be true that they are a good team, my prediction that this year, the Class AAAAA State Championship will go to Region 1- AAAAA Lowndes County High School. Last year, they’re head was a little swollen, and they became a little too over confident. As a result, they were upset by Grayson. Grayson came down there quiet and played a very good game against Lowndes County thereby beating them and knocking them out of the playoffs.

This year will be different.I am quite sure that they haven’t forgotten that, and had to carry that loss on their shoulders for an entire year. That was a pretty tough pill to swallow. However; I will guarantee you that they will carry a big stick this year, and will be playing with a chip on their shoulders.

I am not in by any means taking anything away from those North Georgia Schools. They are good, and have proven themselves to be great. I’m talking about Class AAAAA Schools like Grayson, Peachtree Ridge, East Paulding, Newnan etc. Those teams are very good.

But I am here to tell you that if you think for one minute that those South Georgia Teams in Class AAAAA will be a pushover this year, you had better think again. While a lot of you had under-rated Region 3-AAAAA, Bradwell Institute who lost in the 2nd Round last year against Region 1-AAAAA Perinnial Power Lowndes County, they did in the first round beat a North Georgia East Coweta Football Team whom a lot of you thought would just run all over Bradwell Institute. Then of course you had Region 3-AAAAA Camden County who won the Class AAAAA Title.

This is a rebuilding year for Region 3-AAAAA Bradwell Institute and Camden County, but don’t count them out. I expect it to be a very exciting year in Georgia High School Football. Lets buckle up and hold on tight.

Walton can throw the ball around pretty well in the West Coast Offense they run but was it necessary when Norcross could not stop the run and the qb option. There were plenty of our opponents their scouting and we didn’t have to show to much and came away with a win.

Grayson was ranked #2 going into the weekend, beats the defending state champions and stays #2? The Saturday game was more lopsided than the score suggests. I do understand that Camdem Co. lost a lot of players to graduation. The Grayson long snapper had a very bad day that resulted in the points scored by Camden. I mean, they rushed for a total of 45 yards the entire game! The Grayson D held when they needed to in the red zone and the offense scored the points when they needed to. Due to the issues with the punt snaps, Camdem consistently started their series 20 yards further up the field and yet the only Camdem touchdown was on the run back from the blocked punt when no one could get to the Camdem player that got the ball. That was a great blocked punt by the way and Camdem is to be congratulated for capitalizing on the mistake. (The snap had a hang time longer than most of the punts for the day! :-) )

I know one thing for sure, I DON’T want to be out on that field with Grayson or Camden either one! Those boys would kill this old man! ;-)

I was VERY glad to see after the game the sportmanship exhibited by bioth teams. Even though there was some seriously hard playing during the game and the occasional nudge here and there, both teams came out fo the after game hadnshake and seemed to really mean it. You know how you can tell when the two teams just hurry past each other slapping hands? both teams took their time and shook hands and seemed to be talking with each other.

Great job by both teams!

NTH Trojans, I see where you are coming from. In many cases “recruiting” is not necessarily a crime committed by the recipient school, but rather a decision made by a family who may feel that their son’s chances are enhanced by the transfer. I am okay with the family’s decision. However, I am bothered that the player’s head coach at his current school is not more pro-active in promoting a player who has college potential. If I was the father of a son who I felt had college potential, and was not being properly promoted by his head coach, I would also look elsewhere.

Pretty good picks, but don’t be surprised if McEachern pulls the upset. Also, I think North Gwinnett will have their hands full with Prattville on Saturday. Losing their QB & do everything RB from last year will be tough to overcome early, but North should have no trouble next week with Brookwood.

Sports Fan 31313, Great to see you back as well. As for Newnan, I believe that Drock09 is more qualified than me as for the 2009 version of the Cougars. But from what I can tell, the defense should be at least as good as in 2008. As for the offense, lost all 11 starters from 2008, but have a line up of very talented young players. This 2009 Newnan team could turn out to be very good provided that the young offense developes quickly.

After watching the replay there is no doubt Grayson was the better team Saturday. Having said that, what every one seems to be overlooking was the bone head 4th down attempt by Camden that may have ended up being the play that cost Camden the game. I don’t know what that was all about, hard to believe the coach would have actually called that play instead of punting back to Grayson and making them go the distance in stead of giving them a short field. Almost makes me wonder if the center snapped the ball when he wasn’t supposed to. A defensive game all night and your defense has held the other team to 7 points. Your offense has been horrible and then you go for it!!! That seemed so out of character for Camden. Let the defense win the game Camden.

In ranking teams, I’m not impressed with the idea that Grayson should’ve won by a larger margin, even though I agree they should’ve. As a ranker, I look at the bottom line – it was a game decided in the fourth quarter. That’s what I’d expect the No. 2 team to do against the No. 4 team.

Etowah fan:

Do I have a Gwinnett bias? Yes. I am biased toward areas of the state that have a lot of success. And why are you griping? Didn’t I rank Etowah. : )

Sorry about the errors in the classifications. I know better (as demonstrated in the rankings), but perhaps we in Georgia should scrap AAAAA and call it 5A, like other states. It’s easier to read.

Newnan returns six starters on defense but has to replace three starters on the defensive line that are playing in college this year. The offense feature a pair of talented backs with sub 4.5 speed. The line lack experience but will be good. Beno and rowe are two huge lineman with superstardom written all over them. Watch #10 jamal ransby I believe he might be the most dangerous weapon on the field.

Slalom,
I haven’t had the time to ask you about the outlook for LG this year. What’s your prognosis on them? As for NH, I didn’t get to see their scrimmage Saturday (prior commitment), nor will I get to see them play this week against Johnson, but from everything I’ve seen at practices, read about, and heard from people close to the team, they plan on running a seven man rotation between rb and wingback, with Robert Humphrey being the focal point, and a three man rotation at fb. They also have incorporated a downfield passing game (finally) to keep defenses honest. the strength of this team is their OL, and their weakness is the LB corp. They should finish on top of their sub-region, but after Johnson, they play Gainesville (#2 in AAA), have a bye week, then play Buford (#1 in AA). Not a very kind schedule to start the season, but it will tell them where they are at and what they need to improve on.

As for the transfers, I’m afraid it’s not going to get better until something gives at NH. The coach is going to have to show the parents and players that he is willing to do whatever possible to get them into college. If he makes that kind of effort, then NH will continue to be a force in AAA, if not, then the program will suffer even more.

This weekend I will be at the Hiram vs.Washington game on friday. Ready to see my son bust some heads.

I really expected more from Grayson. This was the statement game that everyone was waiting for from them.Grayson got the victory , but I feel they came up a little short proving to everyone that they deserved the national and state wide attention they are recieving. This Camden squad is light years from the 2008 championship team I was impressed with the Grayson squad that came to Warner Robins last fall that marched up and down the field all night playing mistake free ball.Just didn’t look like the same team ,Keep them behind Lowndes for now………..McEachern! Now this was a statement performance ,What an offensive explosion.413 total yards 204 rushing ,209 passing (balance) McEachern’s RB 26 for 174yds and 3 rushing td’s. The SOPHMORE Qb 10-13 for 184 and 2 Tds and this was the first game of the season.Man this is what OC’s can only dream about…..I don’t know if Brookwoods Defense was that bad or McEachern’s offense just plain good….Etowah fans will find out here shortly.

Greetings Slalom1,

Newnan loss 11 starters from Offensive? WOW!!! That says a lot. But you have 6 starters returning on defense. With that information, that is good for the defense. But it will also take a lot of offense to win games. I still believe that Newnan will win their region this year if they play with the same intensity or better like the way they did last year.

As far as one of my favorites Camden County losing to a good Grayson Team, one does not have much room for mistakes when playing against a caliber of a team such as Grayson. Camden County’s defense is very much still there. As far as the offense, there is still room for improvement. Not a good decision that Coach Jeff Herron made in last minutes of the game. Grayson capitalized on that mistake, and that decision cost them.

But make no mistake, Coach Herron will bounce back. While they may not be the team as they had last year, they are still Dangerous. I’m quite sure that they will will continue to be monitored.

I expect better in 2 weeks against warner robins but you are right keep lowndes there until they lose, if they lose to the ridge and we are undefeated then and only then should we be number 1. i dont think even if we blew camden out we would leap frog lowndes

FYI: Warner Robins will test Grayson’s #2 ranking. You heard it from me. Good luck to our Northside Eagles. Love Ya Blue! The road to another State Championship starts this Friday night. Good luck to all fans across the Peach State as the 2009 season gets under way across the state.

LOL… Todd, yes you did rank Etowah. Just trying to prop the brethren in Region 5/6-AAAAA after shutting out Gwinnett. I did see your comment in GHSF Daily about the Region 5-AAAAA race heating up already. Just hoping for some respect as the top 5-6 teams in that region (EP, Etowah, McEachern, Woodstock, Harrison, North Cobb) potentially beat up each other… and perhaps to change that Gwinnett bias a little. Have to start somewhere.
