Georgia High School Football Daily Spotlight: Predicting the 2009 Class AAAAA State Playoffs

Below are GHSF Daily’s projections for the 2009 postseason. Team’s ranking is indicated.

Observations:
The bottom quarter of the draw is the weakest. The winner of Region 2-AAAAA or 6-AAAAA or a sleeper team (GHSF Daily likes Creekside in that role) could be in good shape to roll into the semifinals.

If Grayson can win Region 8-AAAAA, that’s a good quarter of the draw to be in.
The winners of Region 1 and Region 7 will meet in the quarterfinals. Will that be Lowndes and Peachtree Ridge? GHSF Daily might cover the tossing of that coin to determine which has home-field advantage. That could be big.

FIRST ROUND
#4 Camden County over Luella
#7 Northside (Warner Robins) over Westlake
#9 Etowah over South Gwinnett
#6 North Gwinnett over Lassiter
#10 Newnan over Tift County
#8 M.L. King over Johnson (Savannah)
#2 Grayson over Woodstock
Norcross over Roswell
#3 Peachtree Ridge over Walton
East Paulding over Parkview
#1 Lowndes over East Coweta
Union Grove over Bradwell Institute
Collins Hill over Kell
McEachern over Brookwood
#5 Stephenson over Windsor Forest
Creekside over Warner Robins

SECOND ROUND
#4 Camden County over #7 Northside (Warner Robins)
#6 North Gwinnett over #9 Etowah
#8 M.L. King over #10 Newnan
#2 Grayson over Norcross
#3 Peachtree Ridge over East Paulding
#4 Lowndes over Union Grove
Collins Hill over McEachern
#5 Stephenson over Creekside

QUARTERFINALS
#4 Camden County over #6 North Gwinnett
#2 Grayson over #8 M.L. King
#1 Lowndes over #3 Peachtree Ridge
#5 Stephenson over Collins Hill

SEMIFINALS
#2 Grayson over #4 Camden County
#1 Lowndes over #5 Stephenson

FINAL
#1 Lowndes over #2 Grayson

NO love for the N/NW side of Atlanta… especially Region 6 (shut out entirely in the first round!?) and then Region 5 done after the second round. I am thinking Todd’s love for Gwinnett county teams continues to show in these predictions. Hard to argue with the Final Four based on history and preseason ranking. Aside from letting the seeds fall in place, I am thinking that Region 5/6 will surprise (think Woodstock and Lassiter from last year) and upset a few of the Gwinnett teams in the first two rounds.

I actually think todd is showing love for region 5, with three teams advancing to the second round. If the seeding happened to fall this way, these would be very tough matchups to advance any further. I would love to see the Etowah vs North Gwinnett battle,(you guessed it), IN THE TRENCHES. Two of the best and biggest O Lines in the state.

Wait a minute, Etowah fan- if, as you say, it’s hard to argue the final 4 based on history, why isn’t it also hard to argue Regions 5/6 getting out of the second round? Based on history, teams from 5/6 rarely get out of the 2nd round. Mac and Harrison did at the turn of the century; Walton has a couple of times recently and Woodstock did last season…but only 4 or 5 appearances past the 2nd round in a decade confirms the unlikelihood of anyone doing it this season. The past two region 5 champs have been gone in the FIRST round…including your favorite team just last season. I’m a Region 5 fan, so it’s as disappointing to me as anyone…but the truth hurts.

I see where McEachern put the wood to Brookwood (no pun intended). From reading the story of the game, it was evident that McEachern dominated & Brookwood tacked on a couple of touchdowns to make the score seem closer. Looks like they will be 0-2 after North Gwinnett gets thru with them.
Pridge senior: Sounds like you may be right about Grayson, especially in their weak region. They should go undefeated in the regular season.

I saw he Grayson-Camden game. Outside of two mental errors on Grayson’s part (a blocked punt that resuled in a Camden TD and a funble on the next kick-off that resulted in a Camden field goal) it was very apparent that Camdem’s offense could not score. Grayson’s offense, on the other hand, probably could have scored another TD, but the play calling was a bit conservative. They are the real deal.

Good observations on Camden vs. Grayson. Grayson special teams need work for sure. Almost gave game away but Grayson could have done more damage. Camden had another QB come in the game in the second half who was clearly the better QB. What is up with that? Could have been a better game with him in there. Got to play the talent Camden!!!

got to give it to grayson high, they made my cats look silly. Grayson has an outstanding team. their defense is great at stoping the wing t. they beat camden hands down. I’m not sure what the rest of season has in store for camden, but sometimes you have to adjust. Cats #3 QB should have ran the second half and put the ball in the air. Camden players keep your heads up, its a long season, Dec 12 back at the DOME.

Camden County it is time to rebuild. Grayson was clearly the better team. The special team play for Camden was what made the game as close as it was because they forced a couple of turnovers. The offense looked like junior varsity against Grayson defense. That second quarterback that took over for Camden seemed to make them a faster more energized team. Decision time on which quarterback should start.

Highschool football season is here!!!! I enjoyed the great games this weekend at the ga dome.Man did grayson defense looked good, obviously Camden is not the same team from last yr replacing alot of seniors. Camden really needs to change the QB and go with the younger kid. In my opinion grayson and preachtree are the teams to beat this yr since they have more talent back this year.Grayson really needs to work on there special teams that could hurt them in the playoffs. I will be at the Lowndes vs peachtree game this yr. So we will see how good Lowndes will be without Greg Reid. Camden little young cats should primed and ready to go by playoffs time that if they change QB’s.

Okay I’m back everybody. Welcome back football fans from you prospective schools. I’m from Region 3-AAAAA, and I am a Bradwell Institute Tiger Fan. As I predicted last year and was right, Camden County Wildcats became the Region 3-AAAAA Region Champions and the Undisputed Class AAAAA State Champions. They were under-rated and they proved everyone wrong.

This year, Everyone has Grayson to be the State Champions. Well As it may be true that they are a good team, my prediction that this year, the Class AAAAA State Championship will go to Region 1- AAAAA Lowndes County High School. Last year, they’re was a little swollen, and they became a little too over confident. As a result, they were upset by Grayson. Grayson came down there quiet and played a very good game against Lowndes County thereby beating them and knocking them out of the playoffs.

This year will be different.I am quite sure that they haven’t forgotten that, and had to carry that loss on their shoulders for an entire year. That was pretty tough pill to swallow. I will guarantee you that they will carry a big stick this year, and will be playing with a chip on their shoulders.

I am not in by any means taking anything away from those North Georgia Schools. They are good, and have proven themselves to be great. I’m talking about Class AAAAA Schools like Grayson, Peachtree Ridge, East Paulding, Newnan etc. Those teams are very good.

But I am here to tell you that if you think for one minute that those South Georgia Teams in Class AAAAA will be a pushover, you better think again. While a lot of you had underated Region 3-AAAAA, Bradwell Institute lost in the 2nd Round round beating East Coweta whom a lot of you thought would just run all over Bradwell Institute. Then of course you had Region 3-AAAAA Camden County who won the Class AAAAA Title.

This is a rebuilding year for Region 3-AAAAA Bradwell Institute and Camden County, but count them out. I expect it to be a very exciting year in Georgia High School Football. Let buckle up and hold on tight.

Do not know. Help me out on this. It is driving me nuts. Here is what I have so far: “gray”-the color of Robert E. Lee’s famous horse “Traveler” as well as the color of the great General’s uniform during the confederacy. This gets even better. Gen Lee wore a size 4 shoe.(Ean Pemberton?)”son from a previous life?” The dots seem to connect. This may very well be the year of destiny for Grayson.(Gray-son)

And when is this south ga football tradition gonna go away. is it when the ridge embarasses lowndes at home. its time to give metro teams credit to… region 7 and 8 are insane compared to region 1. ya there 2 differernt regions but the only reason is because of population. lets put it this way in GWINNETT COUNTY, THEY HAVE 2 TEAMS IN THE TOP 10 IN THE NATION ON RIVALS… aka THE ONLY POLL THAT COUNTS IN HS FOOTBALL… IT DETERMINES NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

Okay, Okay, Grayson Student and PRidge Lions,

I am giving you all credit. I have said already in my previous comment that Grayson is a good team, in fact I named Peachtree Ridge, Grayson, Newnan, and East Paulding. I saw how they all played last year during the playoffs. I even commented on the lost handed to Lowndes County by Grayson. But as I predicted last year, I said that Camden County was the team to beat, and that they will win the Class AAAAA State Title.

Now this year, I predict that Lowndes County will win it this year for several reasons. I mentioned that in my previous comments. The fact that I said nothing compares South Georgia Football was the tradition of wins. To prove a point, Region 3-AAAAA Camden County won the State title last year. That is a South Georgia Team.

A Lot of the North Georgia Football Teams are good, no doubt about it. But I still believe that the State Championship Title will go to Region 1-AAAAA Lowndes County this year.

True champions can win on any field. Lowndes can’t win away from their home field. They were over-rated and when Grayson punched the bullies back in the mouth they choked and collasped. Georgia high school needs to eliminate playoff games on either of the two teams home field. If Georgia high school football is so great then why are we so stupid when it comes to playoff format. Play neutral fields throughout the playoffs….with the two teams determining the site. Stupid is as stupid does.

Hey Camden Unfair,

Region 3-AAAAA Camden County didn’t put themselves in that predicament. GHSA aligns the Schools. Now Camden County is not as good as the 2008 season, but I will tell you that they are still a great team. Will they win State this year? I doubt it. You have a great Lowndes County Team out there that remembers the loss given to them by Grayson, and they had to live with that memory for a full year. You can bet your last dollar that they mean business this year. They will dominate in 2009. Now as far Camden County being handed a number one seed, and home field advantage, I doubt it. They had to earn it. I went to Bradwell Institute, and they are also a good team. Remember last year when I was telling everyone that Bradwell Institute was a good team last year as well, and a lot of bloggers disagreed with me, and Bradwell Institute did emerge as a contender. As a matter of fact, they beat a North Georgia Team, ( East Coweta) and advanced into the 2nd round losing to Lowndes County. However; this Decade, Camden county has ran the gamut in Region 3 – AAAAA followed by Bradwell Institute. Bradwell has lost quite a few students due to a new High School being built in the County. Bradwell Institute’s enrollment is comensurate with Class AAAA. They just remained in Class AAAAA. Camden county has one one High School there therefore they have more students and more talent.

Yo

August 25th, 2009

Get Real….Lowndes didn’t lose to Grayson because we were on their home field. We have lost playoff games at home and we have won playoff games on the road. In fact in 2004 we won a state championship at Parkview and that only made it all the more sweeter. It doesn’t matter where you play the game, a win is a win and a loss is a loss. Wimps make excuses like home field advantage. We lost because Grayson hit us in the mouth, not because of their home field advantage. What wimpy team do you pull for that you keep making excuses for?

PRidge Lions,

Come on now. You know and I know that South Georgia Football Teams are not over-rated. Camden County beat you all last year and won the Undisputed State Championship. I said it last year all Season that That Camden County Wildcat Team in 2008 no one could beat them. They had tons of talented players. I have proven to be right. Now Camden County lost a lot of those players, and they lost to Grayson last week. But don’t you think for one minute that Camden County is not good. Coach Jeff Herron has a fine team of football players. They are still a good team. If you think for one minute that a football like Peachtree Ridge will just walk all over Camden County, you had think again. I am not taking anything away from the North Georgia Football teams in Class AAAAA. North Georgia have some really good teams up there. Example: Grayson, Peachtree Ridge, Etowah, East Paulding County, Newnan etc. But South Georgia for years have dominated the State Championships in Football, and you know it. So the South Georgia Bloggers are speaking from years of a winning tradition. Thats all.

Hey Valdosta Wildcat,

Stop talking about how Region 3 – AAAAA sucks, and how you can put anyone in from Region 1-AAAAA against a team in Region 3-AAAAA and they could beat them. Well with Respect to the Valdosta Wildcats in yester year. They were the Perinnial Power and the team to beat. But the Spider Web is on those records. I don’t remember, but did Valdosta make the playoffs last year? Lets see: If i can remember correctly, From Region 1-AAAAA you had Lowndes County, (#1 Seed) Northside Warner Robbins (#2 Seed) Coffee County ( #3 Seed) and (Tift County (#4 Seed)

Region 3-AAAA Had Camden County (#1 Seed) Bradwell Institute (#2 Seed) Windsor Forest (#3 Seed) and Johnson Savannah (#4 Seed). I did’nt see Valdosta anywhere. I believe that Bradwell Institute will play Region 1-AAAAA Houston County the 3 week in September. Or somewhere around that time. Lets just see what happens. By the way, I went to Bradwell Institute.

Sports Fan 31313: Isn’t the reason that the Savannah teams (which are basically 3A & 4A teams playing up) are in with Camden is because of travel costs?
As far as Lowndes playoff record since 2001, here it is.
2001 Lost to Collins Hill @ Lowndes
2002 Lost to Lovejoy @ Lovejoy
2003 Lost to Camden @ Camden
2004,2005 State Champs
2006 Did not make playoffs
2007 State Champs
2008 Lost to Grayson @ Grayson
BTW: Before losing to Collins Hill in 2001, the last time Lowndes lost a home playoff game was to Warner Robins in 1985.

slalom1: Grayson is a small town between Lawrenceville & Loganville in eastern Gwinnett county. This is the 2nd Grayson HS. The original Grayson HS was in existence thru the 1930’s to 1950’s. I believe the original Grayson HS was closed when South Gwinnett opened. The new Grayson HS opened due to the tremendous growth in Gwinnett, as so many high schools have in the last 15 years (Collins Hill, Peachtree Ridge, Mill Creek, Archer, Mountain View & Lanier (to open in 2010))
Grayson Student: If you are saying that Regions 7 & 8 in AAAAA are so much better than Region 1, I beg to differ, especially Region 8. Grayson is the only decent team in Region 8. Region 7 is a much better region, but it is top heavy. From top to bottom, Region 1 is the best region in AAAAA. They may not have as outstanding teams as Peachtree Ridge or Grayson, but they don’t have cupcakes like Meadowcreek, Northview or Duluth.

South GA, the reason why Lowdnes didnt lose at home all those years in the playoffs is because its hard to beat the 11 on the field and the referees

SouthGaRules,

Yes partly True. However; Before Class AAAAA was added, the Highest you could was AAAA. Remember? Now with that being said, Bradwell Institute at that time, was the only High School in the County making it a TRUE AAAA School. They had more than 3,000 Students during that time. When they Build a New School in the County, (Liberty County High School) it took away a lot of students thereby causing the student enrollment to drop. If you look at the Districts and the way that it is aligned, you will see that Region 1 AAAAA is somewhat in South West Georgia, Region 3 AAAAA is in South East Georgia. Camden County is in Southeast Georgia and therefore are assigned to that Region. Bradwell Institute never dropped down because of the cost of travel.
So basically you are correct. But I must say, that the majority of Region 3-AAAAA is in Savannah. 8 out of 10. By the way, Savannah has soooooo many High Schools. Not only in Class AAAAA but also in AAA, AA, and A.

Now in the previous comment that I made to Valdosta Wildcat, I was not speaking of the Lowndes County Vikings. I was speaking about the Valdosta Wildcats when it came to them making the palyoffs.

I don’t know what you are talking about Decatur 4 Life, because teams come to Decatur and beat your 11 football players and the referees all of the time. What’s so hard about it?

grayson state champs??? uhh no possibility. Cheaters don’t make state champs. Everyone know the coaches paid off the refs and that is the ONLY reason you won against lowndes. Come on, people aren’t stupid. When you give a good 2 feet to make it a first down, come on someone is gonna notice and obviously they did or the refs wouldn’t have been fired. Lowndes is not overrated, we are just the best…no doubt. Atlanta teams think they are so big and bad, news for you guys. You are nothing compared to our boys. but I’m gonna be nice now because I just started dating a Grayson boy I am totally crazy about. So good luck everyone hopefully we will see a rightful matchup again this year, with the proper boys taking state. Let’s Go Vikes!!!

I’m suprised that my favorite team, Collins Hill, makes it to the quarterfinals! We’re undefeated right now only because Charles Perkins is amazing at RB. Our QB just isn’t good enough to get far in the playoffs. But, if we’re lucky, I’d like to see us get at least to the Dome where we’ll lose to either Camden Co., Lowndes, or Peachtree Ridge. They are all better well rounded on offense, and we don’t have a great defense.
