Poll Talk: Lowndes, SWD, Carver, Buford, Wesleyan are No. 1

Rankings don’t mean anything in high school football, but until toe meets leather for the first time this season Friday, it’s all we’ve got. So have at it with these.

Some think the defending champs should start No. 1, but I figure we’re ranking 2009, not 2008, so three state champs with heavy graduation losses — Camden County, Tucker and Cairo — won’t start in first place.

But I do think all three will be very good by the end of the season.

Lowndes (AAAAA) and Carver of Columbus (AAA) are safe choices, but I’m sure picking of Southwest DeKalb will cause some skepticism. But SWD was a Top 10 team last season that returns more marquee players than any other in AAAAA.

Maybe second time around will be the charm. Lowndes #1 start to finish. Couldn’t get it done last year so we’ll see.

Where was Charlton co. in 2A. They played good 3 qtrs. scrimmage against Camden Co. Friday in steady rain and looked good in their spread offense. Camden defense looked suspect. The linebackers and secondary especially did not show me much.

No way Sequoyah is #9 in AAAA – heavy graduation losses and a bigger loss last week at all-state RB got into trouble. Plus #9 AAAAA Etowah absolutely manhandled them at last Friday night’s scrimmage. I like the AAAA, AAA, AA and A picks – but I think Wesleyan will have the toughest road to repeat.

Ok, your kidding me right! Who lives or went to Etowah… Etowah thanks you for the bone. Sandy Creek&Loganville hell to nall. Don’t ever rank B.E MAYS Raiders again to they earn it… like the end of season, with state championship. Which should be in the next 2 years, Bowen Homes closed so Douglass will fall off; all the talent will stay at Mays.SWD who’s the QB…..Rome FOOSHIGADEAUX! Put your money there. I hate to bring up race but, Rome has a white shout down corner…. step for step and he’s only a junior I think. He is the truth like Babe Ruth. Gunsby=Lagrange… Carver HMMMM!!! let me get back too you once Lagrange go to Memorial stadium.Give me Peach County or Carrollton,I’ll take Carrollton since there only 15 mins from SWATL, that where euhrbody about start taking there kids for baseball, plus with all those juniors and sophomores… Boi Stop! When will Buford play up ,I’m so tried of there are the best team in GA lb for lb if so schedule accordingly. Start with some team from SWATS, i.e MAYS I guarantee they will shut down that run game. The new schedule come out this year(call Coach Mac). That not too much chew off.

Why isn’t Burke County ranked in AAA? Lets not forget, Burke County has the Augusta Chronicle player of the year (QB)Terrell Brigham back for his senior year. He led the Bears to upset Washington County that was ranked #4 last season, and they’re ranked again. WOW!!!! Then, in a very well battled 2nd round state playoff game. Burke County was the only team to score the most points(28), against #1 ranked Cairo last season. Last year was Terrell first year playing qaurterback, and his stats was higher than B.J Bostic from Jefferson County. He’s back to lead Burke County along with several other key players. So, tell me what do the Bears have to do to get regonition???

Sequoyah actually lost very few to graduation compared to most schools. However, if Swopes isn’t back, that deals Sequoyah a major blow. Rome has to grow up fast at some positions to get as high as the Wolves are ranked. Hillgrove may end up as the best team in 7-AAAA, which has emerged as the second strongest AAAA region (behind Region 6) in the state. Too bad those regions have to meet each other in the first round.

Well, Todd I guess this proves you are not a Brookwood homer after all.
Three Gwinnett teams in the top 10 & Brookwood & Parkview not among them. This should disprove the theory that Gwinnett revolves around those 2 programs. They are not even top five in Gwinnett County.

yet again, another great season of high school football and East Paulding is already in the back of Todd Holcomb’s mind. Etowah? i agree, they could be in the top ten if they could beat EP, but, that hasn’t happened yet. Last year Etowah came to the Boneyard and was promptly scolded and sent home like a kid who broke the neighboors window. You show me the actual play and not the “they have potential” play. Anyone can beat anyone, but some have never beat EP.

Todd..will you ever learn and show some love. For the past three years you’ve overlooked the same team only to jump on the bandwagon after we’ve left the station. Etowah, Woodstock, North, and even Harrison are all “good” teams but the best is East. A QB that can hit the receivers, a stable of running backs and a new kicker that just got back from indy and is now one of the top kickers in the country. If the “D” plays up, move East up on that list.

Even though Etowah was edged out in ot at East, they still won the region. The region 5 AAAAA champ is usually ranked about where Todd has them.Tood must think they will repeat, and I agree. Why is this a surprise to some? Also, East has to come to Etowah this year. Harrison came to Etowah at the end of last season and was steamrolled!

Most polls, and COACHES have EAST rated just outside of the “top ten”, which is fine. Time will tell. I feel most of the folks in and around football know EAST is the “800 Pound Gorilla” that just won’t go away”. The big rumor I’ve been hearing lately is how Big The O/D Lines are at EAST this year” and if you have Followed East since Reid arrived, we have consistantly been the smaller team in the trenches on BOTH sides of the ball. If East is that big on the lines and with their conditioning which is amoung the best in Georgia, well, it could be a very interesting year. Cause we have a ton of speed at Qback and behind him.

We do have some holes to fill here and there do to the loss of key players to graduation. We may come out and start the season a little slow and might lose a few early. But I would imagine as the season goes were going to be pretty darn good come playoffs. I just hope we can get there first.

Good post Undertheradar. Despite East’s new found size on the line, it will not compare to Etowah’s senior laden Ol with two D1’s and a physical senior TE. Region 5 AAAAA should be very competitive at the top, as usual, and all these teams being mentioned will have holes to fill. As you suggest, the team to peak at the right time, i.e Woodstock last year could make some noise.

Now thier down side will be that they are young this team is looking at a 7-3 8-2 recored this year upsetting eather Etowah or EP plus Woodstocks scares the H$!! out of us. This Region is going to be vary competitive. Good luck to all and somebody please beat a Gwinnett County team this year in the playoffs they own 5-AAAAA

Well I think Douglass has the number 1 ranked D-1 in the country, position wise. Did he play in the scrimmage the other night? He He!!! Like I said earlier, If the rumor is true. Lookout, cause I know those Raiders are strong and conditioning is what wears foes down in the 4th qt. Thats why were in so many games with out having d-1 studs like most. I’m excited as heck, gonna be a fun year on here and on the field. I do remember N cobb’s speed from last year, I’m glad that one dude graduated.

It seems Everyone got some transfers this year. East got a few too LMAO…. See what happens when you win

Woodstock does not have the consistency to compete with Etowah, Harrison and East Paulding this year. These are the 3 elite teams of region 5, which i think is the most competitive region based on these 3 teams. The rest of region 5 will have to catch up the level that these teams play on. Woodstock for example may pull off one or two upsets, but they will be upsets and nothing more. If someone sees you win and says, wow, that is an upset and i cannot believe they won, then your not an elite team, you just got lucky that one night in that one game. i.e. Grayson vs. Lowndes 2008

What a disaster in the scrimmage between Peach County and Northside-Warner Robins! NSWR played as though they had no pre-season workouts. Both quaterbacks had problems moving the ball. The center was terrible! He must have rolled four or five snaps on the ground while the QB was in the shotgun. The defensive linemen couldn’t catch any of Peach RB or QB in their backfield even when they were trapped. The team is young but continued mistakes like these will prove to be costly..

Ol’Raider Fan I agree for the most part about the top three but I dont think you can put harrison in there this year they dont have the athletes to compete this year. the 4 that will make it to the playoff’s out of the region will be EP, Etowah, N.Cobb and Woodstock. Like I said Please let Some Team in this region step up and beat one of the top Gwinnett Team’s intell that happens we cant call our self’s elite…
