Michael, how do schools like UGA play it when athletes like Jarvis Jones and Marlon Brown say they won’t commit anywhere until signing day. Seems like that puts the schools in a very awkward position. Also, if we have more offers out there than we have scholarships, do we just take first responders and notify the others that their offer is off the table? Tks for your time.

Your comments on Lutzenkirchen are not accurate. As of today, he is still committed to Auburn and looking at other schools like Alabama and Tennessee. I fully expect him to sign with Auburn now that Malzahn is on board. Also he is very tight with Raymond Cotton in Maryland and it looks like Auburn will get back in the fold with him now that James Willis has been retained.

Kay how can you pre judge someone (Reid) that you don’t even know. Do you know anything about the game of football? There aren’t any smiling faces on the players faces when they are on the field. Never give the other team the benefit of showing your emotions or letting them see you sweat. Wow what a stereotypical statement you made (lol)! Stop being so judgemental, maybe the world would be a better place to live!

Kay, you interpreted the picture just like the athlete wanted you to interpret it. Lots of football players don’t necessarily want to communicate a cuetsie look. They want to look mean or bad, the ‘don’t mess with me’ look. I understand from some of the players at the UnderArmour game that he is great to be around and a real good guy. If he had a bad attitude, the players he will be around wherever he chooses to go would quickly smack him down a notch or two. Good coaches can certainly control that type of situation also. Recruits wouldn’t be talking to him to convince him to come to their schools if he was a problem because as you said, “who would want to be around anyone…” .So, you probably don’t need to worry much about Reid.

because he could play at georgia and make an impact on a defensive backs unit that could use guys like reid and branden smith, or he could go to florida and compete with the 8 other cornerbacks currently on the gator roster. and from the standpoint of him being a two way player, the choice is simple: go to uga and add speed to an offense that just lost moreno, or compete with harvin, assuming he comes back, rainey, and demps

No great technique, speed or instinct. Think that being bigger and Carve-Columbus making it to championship his junior year excelled him into that position. But pure ability, I’ll take Jonathan Davis, Chase Vasser and Mitchell-Thornton. What do you think?

IMHO i think cox will bring offensive leadership to the table, something stafford didnt seem to posses as much as his predecessors like Greene and Shockley, and the fact that he knows the system inside and out has me at ease. I really don’t think that at qb we’ll have nearly as many problems as you’d think at first glance. however rb is going to be interesting. are we going to have another moreno or brown come off the bench, or are we going to revert to the post-musa smith days of lumpkin/cooper/browning? the optimist in me says that we’ll be able to work enough kinks into the offense with athletes such as logan gray, carlton thomas, branden smith, aj green, and co. that a large part of the hole moreno and stafford left can be filled

To answer a previous question, schools hold a certain number of scholarships open hoping to get the players they want. In the meantime, they usually tell the other potential players what’s going on and will offer them if they don’t get the first guy(s). It’s up to the potential prospect to decide if he wants to wait and see what happens or go ahead and sign with another school. I know a guy who waited on UGA until almost May before he signed with another school. He really wanted to come to UGA, but they were waiting on someone else. At least schools are up front about it – usually. But didn’t uf mess up and sign too many players and have to drop one of the guys who waited to sign with them?

Jarvis Jones? I don’t think he’s ever entertained the thought of playing in Georgia, but he was kind enough to do the right thing and visit UGA. I would’ve liked to have seen UGA pursue Peachtree Ridge LB Kevin Minter [LSU]. He’s Jonathan Davis with prototype size, and was an absolute wrecking machine in the state championship game (19 tackles). 1. Concerning the comment Kay made, that’s why women have no place or buisness in football, THEY DON’T HAVE A CLUE!!!

2. Auburn will wind up violating NCAA recruiting rules in the future and will have sanctions placed against them within the next 2 or 3 years. They have become SO intimidated by what Nick Saban is doing over at U of A all the talk about now is “we gotta get better at recruiting, we gotta get better at recruiting” I’;ve never seen such a since of urgency over recruiting over there. The whole thing is, is that Chizik and his assistants will never be able to recruit better than Nick and co., they’ll get desperate over at Auburn and start doing any and everything to lure recruits in and that’s gonna bring on what will be some of the darkest days in Auburn football history. The 08 season will just be a preview of what’s to come.

I think the interest in recruiting is an interest for die hard fans. I, for one, think the ’soap opera’ aspect to recruiting is that these kids are making one of the toughest decisions they will ever have to make. Playing for the right program, the right coach, and in the right location will make the difference if great players make it to the next level. The drama is just an aspect of the human story which makes it so compelling.

Not only is Stafford projected to be a first-rounder, he also could be THE No. 1 pick of the draft. Stafford is clearly the better NFL “prospect.” Will Stafford be the better NFL “player”? Consistancy is huge factor and Staff had three years to demonstrate some but in his final UGA game was far from consistant.Tarkenton was consistant. No big deal. I don’t think there are any plans for Mark Richt to come down to Valdosta and meet with him…Rodney Garner and Willie Martinez were at Lowndes earlier this year for the ball-game between Northside Warner Robins and Lowndes to check on Abry Jones, but I am sure they talked with Greg as well because he was clearly the best athlete on the field. The las thing I heard was that Georgia was mainly recruiting Greg as a DB, however, I think if he commits to Georgia he will be used in the return game as well (he is such a threat whenever he touches the ball). Obviously a school has a right to offer who they choose but this should have been handled sooner to allow time for him to find another school. After a month, other schools may have moved on to other players since he committed to SC, leaving him no where to go. Regardless of why, I think it’s sad this situation has happened to SC and Davis. Schools have many more options than these kids. Pulling a scholarship 4-5 weeks (or something like that) after he has committed when they (the staff) didn’t even want him, is not right and hurts him getting into a school. SC football will go on with no impact because they will still sign 25 players or so for their program. How many offers are left for this kid, who obviously thought he was set for the next stage in his life.

I wish him the best where ever he ends up. Sure someone will come back with their offer to him now that SC has backed out. His height scares a lot of people but he’s a very talented player. Hopefully he can find the right situation for him.

Secondly, USC doesn’t give FREE educations lightly and should make sure the recruits are there for an education and not NFL job training. I sure wish the NFL would restrict their ranks to real college grads, For that matter I wish all professional sports required their ranks be college grads if they want to play in the USA but that’ll never happen.
I firmly believe Spurrier will have a gelled team this year because he new coaches hired are first class.

Ral, LSU will not offer this kid. First they have not been recruiting him, and do not know him. Second, LSU recruits a different level of talent that SC does. LSU recruits and gets commits from the top players in the country, not 1 or 2 like SC, but 25 a season.

Rob, very good comments. These kids have a very limited number of opportunities, while the colleges have multiple players wanting to come there and play. Withdrawing a scholarship at the last second by a school can have devastating effects on a mid-level talent player who received a small number of offers. Yes schools can be hurt a little by kids changing their minds at the last minute and backing out of a commitment, but overall, the affect there to the school is really minimal whereas to the kid it could mean the difference in playing at an SEC school or Alabama-Birmingham.

Spurrier’s control of his staff is evident in Cooper taking another job. He doesn’t allow renegades players, and he sure doesn’t allow renegade coaches.

I’m glad Coach Stephens has such high moral standards. Maybe next year when a Gwinnett County kid wants to come to Tucker, he will recruit him before the 10th week of the regular season. Stephens is another sad example of DeKalb County at it’s best.

there`s more to this story…The kid wants to go to UGA where his uncle went.but they haven`t offered…why haven`t they offered..his grades? probably not..His attitude ? probably not…His height …probably so…the average lineman in the SEC is 6 ` 5″ 320 lb`s..Bigger , faster , stronger..is what they all need and you can`t waste a prescious scholarship on a hope and a prayer.Renee Curan`s are few and far between.

I don’t think position is the factor at UGA. Jonathan Davis is a DB/OLB type player. I think it is more that they have plenty of DB/LB scholarship players already.

Besides, they are holding out that Reid qualifies and heads to Athens since the Gators backed off.

This is just the type of player ut needs to continue down the road of being WORSE than a historically mediocre Gamecock team. Sure, SOS pulled the offer, big effing deal. If the kid has any SEC talent whatsoever, there are plenty of teams in need and he will not be left out. On the flip side, had he decommited from USC, it would again be USC’s fault for losing him. It’s a lose lose so move on. My guess is that the truth will come out after signing day and this rinky dink po dunk HS in ga will be the one with explaining to do.

On Marlon Brown: I just get the feeling from talking to Marlon, that Lane Kiffin is determined to keep Brown in Tennessee and will do anything to make it happen. I could see the Vols promising to throw to him on the first play of the first game (aka Clemson w/Davis), letting him pick his jersey number, name a street after him, etc. … All kidding aside, Brown is still blown away that Kiffin left directly from his press conference to catch a flight and visit him the same night. I know Marlon also loves him some Mike Bobo and Aaron Murray, but will tough for him to leave Tennessee, especially with the mounting public pressure and the fact that his last visit before signing day will be @ Rocky Top.

Greg Reid? I really think UGA has a chance. I don’t have any inside info, but it seems like Reid was shocked to see the enormous public reaction when he said he would take an official visit to Georgia. He liked it, and I think the idea of signing with Georgia is growing on him.

I think it’s a smart move to have Branden Smith make comments about his desire to be in the back field with Reid, but still don’t think that will happen. Meyer and crew will get the job done and i won’t be surprised to see Reid sign as a Gator.

Wasn’t it just a year ago that we were praising him for the dominating defense Georgia had during the 2007 season. Injuries and the inability to practice the way we needed to hurt us. We went back to basics before the bowl and it paid off. Don’t think for a minute that our boys won’t be worked hard this off season. True Dawgs support the team no matter what. I’ve had enough of these fair weather fans constantly bashing our coaches and players. If Richt wasn’t able to close deals, do you think we would have gotten a commitment from AJ Green his JUNIOR year? Oh yeah, Knowshon also chose GA over FL on signing day and I think Reid will too. The lesson for recruits at SC is don’t count on any commitments from this coaching staff until you sign the paper on signing day. When Murray broke his leg, Richt personally told him he had a scholarship at UGA whether or not he ever put on a football uniform again. That is integrity and class. That is the kind of leadership example I would want my son to see from a coach. I suspect Spurrier is a good person. However, when the chips were down, he didn’t honor one of his subordinates, and therefore his, commitments.

Truthfully, the kid (19 years old for quite some time now) was jockeying for a scholly at LSU and was busy not answering his telephone. He was busy calling Cooper and wouldn’t answer, nor return calls from USCe the week preceeding the scholly yank. Shouldn’t have been a surprise to him that the Evil Genuis found out just what he was up to. Would you continue tying up a scholly when you KNEW that the “prospect” was not 100%? Unfortunately, USCe is not able to talk about it nor defend their actions until after Feb. The Tucker coach cannot tell other kids where to go to school based on one situation where all of the facts are not publicized. I guess his statements are based on how it reflects on his program with the athlete in question being a 4* recruit.

Hmmm, let’s see a story about Spurrier not giving a damn about anyone but himself and treating other people disrespectfully. This is news? Now if you had a story about Spurrier wondering if it is because he has been such a tool over the years that he can’t sign a decent qb prospect then that would be news. How is it that a supposed “offensive genuis” and “qb guru” can’t even get any interest from a top qb? Its because the qb knows that if he succeeds its due to Spurrier and if he fails its because he sucks. Oh, and there will be no NFL future either.

Unfortunately UF loses the game in a squeaker. You will never live down the accident of the trophy in the Gator Nation. Nor with your teammates. It will be there in the back of your mind playing at UF. Number 8 Terrence Edwards dropped some key passes in key games that UGA lost. He was a tremedous athlete while at UGA. The Dawg Nation stood behing him and supported him as he needed encouragement not ridicule. Will you get that at UF in light of the trophy? Come play for the Dawgs along side of Green with Aaron tossing to you. Make a clean break with a man at the helm that is interested in you more than just winning games but in the game of life. As a life long Bulldog, I don’t think I have ever been more impressed with a young recruits record of accomplishment. UGA has had many who excelled in the classroom prior to entering college and after, but I am not sure I ever remember one who had never made anything but A’s, although I am sure there have been some. It is such an outstanding accomplishment, and I doubt if there is anyone who would not find it to be outstanding.

Coach Richt I am sure did not say he would attend if you indeed are Valedictorian without being completely sincere. It is a source of pride on his part that you have chosen UGA, as well as all supporters. You will be part of an outstanding class of young men, most of whom will have to work very hard to balance academics and athletics. What we as fans fail to realize at times, is that in addition to being a good athlete, you also have to go to class and study. It is not an easy task, but one that many do well.

Ried has completely droped UF now. He says Meyer treated him like crap during his official visit because he had pulled his commit and was looking around.

Meyer needs to watch his temper/EGO, other recruits are beginning to see how he treats people who “cross” him and how everything is about Urban and Urban only.

There is no doubt Meyer is a great coach and has put together a great team at Florida, but if he continues to alienate people with his attitude and ego, those two crystal trophies will only be worth so much once “superman” is gone.

Chris, if your academics are good enough to get into a better school than UGA, then you owe it to yourself and to your family to do so. UGA academics are rather poor and, if your high school has prepared you well enough, you should shoot higher. There are lots of kids who have no other choice than to go to UGA and that is good enough for them.

However, beware of being overconfident. Whether being the top student in your high school really prepares you for a better university really depends on the academic strength of your high school.
Lots of kids come out on top at their high school only to find that they have to struggle at an upper level academic college. Whatever you do, don’t rely on UGA graduates to advise you on UGA academics. They are understandably prejudiced and want to think the best about their own school.
Also, don’t fall into the trap of taking weak liberal arts courses in high school just to keep up your GPA and compete for valedictorian. You are better off taking the tough math and science courses even if you get beat out for valedictorian by someone who takes home economics and community organizer type courses. Those cupcake courses won’t help you get into the better schools.

You probably should speak to someone at Emory University, Vanderbilt University, Georgia Tech, or Duke about whether you would be qualified to move up. Even better, speak to two or more of these upper tier schools. Good luck whatever you decide.

Chuck, you are ignorant and this is proven with the statement “UGA academics are rather poor” Two Rhode Scholars (in one school year) are normally not pulled from “poor academic schools” Check the statistics before making such a ridiculous statement. This is to be expected from a jealous Tech guy. I know it just burns you guys up that UGA has become a nationally-recognized university. Kudos to Chris for picking an excellent university with fine athletics… best of both worlds.

Chris you could have excelled at Tech – receive a quailty education like Rueben Houston. He was taught the advantages of capitolism… buy weed in bulk and distribute in smaller, more profitable units. Joe Hamilton learned that when driving drunk, it is a good idea to carry weed. Stephon Marbury demonstrated that you can make the most of a 540 SAT score. Such fine examples of the North Ave Trade School.

Allison, your advice may well be the stupidest diatribe I have ever read. You need to be on political articles and not commenting on sports columns. It may surprise you to know that simply going to the schools you mentioned would do nothing to insure the students success in life. In fact, if they promoted a ‘nose in the air’ attitude like yours, they could actually hurt the students chances of success after college. Your recommendations on courses for this young man to take in high school are a bit late since he has already begun the final semester of his senior year. Gleaning that from the article above requires very little intelligence so I am sure it was well over your head. I won’t comment further except to say that there are no high school courses that I know of named ‘community organizer’. Using that phrase only serves to reveal your true ignorance. I only know of one person who at one time was a community organizer. He will be spending the next 4 years attempting to sweep up the broken glass left on the floor by a person whom I am certain you admire. I am sure Chris will apply himself at UGA as well as he has applied himself in high school and I wish him the best. I am equally as sure he will never embrace your lowly view of “community organizers’ or the education they have.

Chris needs to check the rules for Valedictorian in the county. It is NOT based on grades, but on graduating Magna Cum Laude. It then goes to the student who has the highest SAT. Many students have had the highest weighted GPA, graduated no. 1 academically and not named Valedictorian. Good luck on the SAT.

Chris, I am glad you chose UGA for your college education. The college experience is a lot like life: you get out of it what you put into it. Plan your academic program out and work your plan. Pick a career that you will enjoy and you will prosper. Perhaps you will play in the NFL and get rich one day. I hope so. But always be mindful that only a small percentage of great college players have NFL careers, so plan those academics for law, accounting, education, medicine, pharmacy, theology, or whatever you feel would provide you with the opportunity to have a great life.

Lets ponder his options here….
Option 1) Go to a school who runs the boring Option Offense and never touch the ball your college career due to a lousy two star “run only” QB, play in front of measly 35,000 silent nerds at the “never sold out” Bobby Dodd, play a grueling ACC schedule and have your biggest game aired on RAY COM sports, and at the end of your Tech career maybe have a shot to play in the XFL(if they ever make a come back).
Option 2)Go to a school that has 4 quarterbacks with great accuracy(4th being Logan Grey who could have his jersey retired at Tech), an offense that throws the ball over 50% of the time, consistently in the Top 10, has more of their practices aired on ESPN than Tech does football games, and puts more male cheerleaders in the NFL than Tech football.
Hmmmmm. If i was a 6″4 wide out that thinks I have a shot at playing on Sundays, I think the decision is pretty clear.

I am a UGA fan but it bothers me to see Dawg fans brag over another school beating Tech. Also, it is true Tech has not had a 5 star player in years (maybe Calvin Johnson). That makes it even more unbareable to get beat by Tech. They did it with no 5 star players.

Tech’s problem, with their offense, will be winning bowl games when teams have a month to prepare for the option. If they don’t pass more they will have a difficult time getting any WR’s although it looks like they do have Hill. We will see if he will be the next CJ. I hope he is a good blocker.

How many 5 star recruits does UGA sign and enroll every year? If my memory serves, it’s about 1 every 2 years. UGA’s recuriting “success” (as deemed by recruiting experts) is that they sign and enroll “solid” classes that are full of 3 and 4 star student athletes that fill their positions of need. So tell me, is there a correlation between UGA’s recuiting and their 9.8 wins a year vs. GT’s recuiting and their 7.8 wins a year for the last decade?

LSU fan, if you were a real fan you should know how hugely LSU underperformed all year. LSU had the talent of a National Champ team but had a horrible QB and a defense that started to implode near the end of the season (in part because the QB kept turning the ball over). I wouldn’t be surprised if LSU wins the SEC West next season. The CFB is similar to what I’d expect if GT player Florida or USC or Texas. Even the most die-hard GT fan will say they aren’t at that level.

I watched him once, so I’m not sure I’ve got a complete picture. But my impression is that the guy “plays with good length” as the basketball coaches like to say. He doesn’t have the body development to play down low consistently, but he’s a very complete player when facing the basket. Guys with that height and quickness who can shoot the ball and pass are always deadly in college because they’re so tough to guard (will he drive? Pull up for the jumper? Give it up?) He’ll be a contributor as a freshman and be one and done.

Anyone that commits, then de-commits, then sets up an official visit with a third school (UCF), then cancels the visit with that school obviously has some issues. I would be wary of signing this kid regardless of how many stars he has on Rivals.

**Michael** – Any information on Kwame Geathers? I’m thinking this guy may just be one of the most underrated and overlooked recruits in this years class. Word is he has standing offers from UGA, FSU, USCe, and Tenn. Also he just visited UCF this past week where his cousin apparently hosted him and tried to convince him to go to Orlando.

Any prediction where he ends up?

Signing day isn’t till Wednesday and he is free to chose whoever he wants for whatever reason he wants. Whereever he does go, he is going to have to work his butt off waking up at 5am to lift weights and run before going to class. I say good luck to you Johnnie Farms and don’t take any lip from a redonkulous sportswriter. I am a SEC fan but Farms is actually correct, UNC DOES have an excellent academic reputation…the only school in the SEC that is better is Vandy. It takes a lot of courage for a 18 year old kid to stick to his guns and tell that to Steve Spurrier….and what would you reccomend your 18 year old son base his decision on?

Tech and UGA usually don’t go after the same recruits. Academics and behaviour standards are considerably higher at Tech. We put education and citizenship ahead of just being another football factory. But, if you are not a good student and/or you have a criminal record, then UGA is the place to go. Why get stressed over studying when you can just go to UGA and party for four years?

Preseason #1 = A bunch of band wagon recruits, when you lose 3 games (one being your in-state rival). Those recruits keep their pledge as a recruit, but look elsewhere. Georgia became greedy to, only handing out scholies to top flight candidates, who have no love for UGA. Hence, we have Michael Bowman and other recruits going elsewhere. When UGA does not fulfill its hype, can’t reel in the top National talent, UGA makes a last minute run at the states remaining top talent and are left in the dust.

Go after the talent that wants to play at UGA. If a kid has not decided until signing day, you are left holding a bag, holes on the field. When Richt was meeting needs last year, he should have done that this year. Lack of depth = exploited weaknesses = 4 to 5 losses.

When will these kids who play games with these colleges realize that life does not revolve around them? The sad part is many of these kids do not learn the world does not revolve around them until it is too late. that is when their eligibility is used up and then they have nothing such as in no degree and no job. I realize it goes both ways yet maybe if kids actually stuck to their decisions the recruiters would not resort to the tactics they do.

And for those of you who think he is playing the sdhools- Alabama seems to have played him a bit too. Everyone is looking for the best match. Just because he is younf and full of promise and opportunity, dont bash him. The comment about his grades is quite perplexing, as I doubt that person is privy to his graqdes, test scores, or other criteria used in assessing scholastic aptitude. Thug??? What is a thug? Is a thug a young black male who is trying to make something for himself. If thats the case, then yes Alabama has been built of them, so to has FSU and UGA have all been built off them. 95% of the people who complain about the grades issue obviously doesnt understand the situation. If he was white with the same history and athletic ability even Harvard would be trying to find a way to get this kid in. I am teacher myself who unlike most of the people on this site actually went through the recruiting process and understand that the majority of high school students today have other things on their mind thier first two years in high school other than making good grades. Ive seen people critisize this kid for youthful transgressions that many high school students make. Look at the US poster child Micheal Phelps. He just got caught up in a drug photo. Not allegedly but he actually got photographed and you mean to tell me that colleges all over the country wouldnt be lined up right now to sign this kid to their university. Let Reid grow up or get to know him and understand his life before you critisize the decions that he has made in it. And for those who doubt his ability, I have seen film of every high school game he has played and believe me when I tell you that he can cover any guy in the country. I think he will end up at FSU. HE has the potential to be one of the best corners to ever play at Florida State. People say he is 5′8″ but look at Tony Carter. The lack of size didnt hurt his career at FSU and Reid has the potential to be better. If he comes to FSU, he will start as a freshman.

I think Reid would excel as a player and an individual by just being around the players and coaches at UGA. Not to say BAMA and FSU, or even UF, are bad environments. But, considering his background, I think CMR along with the older players on the team would offer Reid great leadership.

Big deal. I don’t much care where he goes. He can’t cover a much taller receiver so I see him as limited value. Playing well in high school don’t mean squat in D1 ball.

Really cool these FSU fans know what the NCAA will do to FSU even before the school or the NCAA rules committee knows. The only thing that could possibly keep FSU off probation is the seniority and respect of Bobby Bowden. They just don’t want the legendary Bowden to go out with his team on probation. Had some school like Nebraska, WVU, Virginia, etc.,committed the level of violations perpetrated by FSU they would already be on probation. Anyone that asserts to know what the NCAA will do is simply blowing smoke. The recent 3rd arrest of one of the FSU starters doesn’t help though. A starter with his 3rd arrest in 3 years and second DUI. Sounds like they run it pretty loose there.

Being a Gator, and hating FSU football, I must say your comments about the stadium are beyond stupid. The Doak is a beautiful football stadium, and the FSU campus is equally beautiful. And, yes, FSU educates and puts out some of the best teachers in the country…and we cetainly need “best” teachers today with the highly disrespectful and “give it to me, I don’t want to earn it” type of kids coming into schools today.

you “adults” need to stop and think BEFORE you write. to call someone a “thug, stupid, short, slow, and not good enough to compete” shows just how idiotic some of you adults are.

FSU -aka- the “criminoles”- are having a bad spurt that normally bobby would have never let happen.

UGA spells dogs “DAWGS” so there goes that educational system.

then you have UF that says “greg isnt a man of his word”—thats funny coming from a school that hired a coach in the middle of his contract after having promised the kids at utah he would be there. guess we know what meyers “word” is good for then huh? to claim that the gators were the “only school to recruit him the last 2 years was absurd— just like a purty engaged bride thats not married yet—just cause she isnt being pursued in public doesnt mean she isnt wanted by someone else- just means theyre waiting in the shadows.

attack a school people, not a young man trying to make a important life decision. seems they are some true “haters” (using that word make me a thug also?) out there.

Wally- Does that include UF’s record against UGA in the 70’s and 80’s? I am pretty sure before UF’s current run of 16-3, UGA was 15-5 over the previous 20 year span. Don’t see how that was dominant by anybody but UGA. Why don’t you ask SOS how good they played us before he took over as the head coach? I am sure that ‘66 loss still stings a bit. Look, you have been dominant since the early 90’s. I admit it, just like any of the other UGA fans I discuss football with on a daily basis. Just enjoy your program, which I believe is one of the best in the country, and let us try an build ours to the same level so we can enjoy the game each and every year.

A 5′ 8″ DB being great in college? Call me a skeptic, but… actually no. It simply is not going to happen. A RB, maybe. But not a DB. He’ll be a great roleplayer, and we’ll completely forget who he was a few years from now.

All you people on here calling Greg a thug and dumb and all those other terrible things need to get a life. None of you even know him because if you did, you wouldn’t be saying those things. Instead of encouraging our youth, you are on this blog with all of your negativity. All of us have done somethings in our younger days that we wish we hadn’t, so he who is without sin, cast the first stone. Greg Reid is a fine young man and an outstanding athlete. Don’t let the 5′8″ fool you. Just ask some of the 6′5″ and above receivers he’s intercepted or broken up passes from. I don’t know who your #1 cornerback is, but where was he during the ESPN Under Armour game when Greg Reid won MVP? So if you don’t have anything encouraging to say, don’t say anything. You don’t know anything about his grades or anything else, so stay off of this blog with your hatred!!!

Previous Georgia 5-star Recruits:
AJ Green (2008)
Richard Samuel (2008)
Rashad Jones (2006)
Matthew Stafford (2006)
Brandon Miller (2004)
Kregg Lumpkin (2003)
Paul Oliver (2003)
Marquis Elmore (2002)

Previous Georgia Tech 5-star Recruits:

Well that was a short list. Let’s try 4-star:
Omoregie Uzzi (2008)
Derrick Morgan (2007)
Morgan Burnett (2007)
Jonathan Dwyer (2007)
Nick Claytor (2007)
D.J. Donley (2007)
Josh Nesbitt (2007)
Jason Peters (2007)
Steven Threet (2007)
Jamaal Evans (2006)
Calvin Johnson (2004)
Rashaun Grant (2003)
Kenny Scott (2003)
George Cooper (2002)
Ajenavi Eziemfe (2002)

Since 2002, Georgia has had half as many 5 star recruits as Tech has had 4 star. If you take away the 2007 aberration, Georgia is pulling as many 5 stars as Tech is 4 stars. In 2007, when Tech got lucky under old Coach what’s-his-name, Georgia had 12 4 stars. The recruiting just doesn’t compare. Tech gets 14 4 star recruits in 6 years. Georgia gets 12 per season.

And let’s not forget the overwhelming recruiting success of 2003 named Reggie Ball.

No problem with Johnson’s approach. Recruits just have to remember to make Tech their 5th visit. Otherwise, if it is their first visit and they get an offer, it is take it or leave it with no other visits allowed. Not a problem if the recruit knows Tech is where he wants to be. However if he wants to visit any other schools before deciding, he better do it before going to Tech. Hard ball and fair goes both ways!

Obviously SEC Fan, like many of his conference brethren, struggles with reading comprehension. Offers from Tech aren’t “take or leave it,” but rather “don’t take it unless you mean it.” Coach Johnson actually encourages recruits to visit as many schools as they want and to gather as much information as they can about prospective schools, even after they visit Tech. He just doesn’t want them to accept an offer unless they are absolutely sure of where they want to go. Aycock knew this going in, but still made a commitment to Johnson and Tech. If Aycock had interest in Auburn or any other school, he should not have committed to Tech.

I, for one, find this approach refreshing and think that if more coaches adopted it, the current muddy world of commitments, soft verbals, contingency offers, etc. would be radically changed. This not only benefits the schools and coaches as they plan how to use their limited number of scholarships, but also the prospective student-athletes as it simplifies the whole process.

I don’t care where Farms goes. He can go to Auburn and play for a coach named something like “Cheezit,” or N. Carolina who lost to a S.Carolina team that played only one half of football with a backup QB. And, at UNC he will second fiddle to the Bball team and wear powderpuff blue. That’ll be cute, although they have mixed in dark blue to look more like Duke now.
Well, Cock and Bull, you’re named appropiately. The last time South Carolina played North Carolina was in 2008 and they had no quarterback problem. The SEC officials in the first five minutes of the game gave South Carolina a touchdown and stole a touchdown from UNC. I said during the game, after the game and ever since the game that if it were my decision no SEC official would set foot on Kenan Stadium soil again. South Carolina won by seven. Spurrier cried about how lousy his team played after that game. Your record against UNC is 34-17-4. You’ve lost two for every one you’ve won, and that’s all you’ve got to brag about.
South Carolina is the graveyard of coaches. So far, Frank McGuire is the only coach to win at a National Championship caliber level there and he couldn’t do it after you pulled out of the ACC because of the ACC’s rule that an athelete had to score 800 on the SAT and Paul Dietzel couldn’t find players that intelligent that would go to South Carolina. An 800 score means you can spell your name and usually find the classroom unassisted.
South Carolina ended the coaching careers of some very good coaches. Hall of Famer McGuire, Eddie Fogler, Paul Deitzel, Dave Odom and Lou Holtz. It remains to be seen if Spurrier will survive. If he doesn’t it’ll be fitting since a friend of mine who went to Science Hill High in Johnson City Tennessee with him told me that he was, let’s say, a jerk (he used an A word) then too.
As for “Carolina Blue”, you’d be hard pressed to find any college ball fan in the country that doesn’t recognize it. You’d be just as hard pressed to find anyone outside of the southeast who has a clue what South Carolina’s colors are. That would be because South Carolina’s athletic program is just as pathetic as it’s academics.

Fla. working hard in Fla along with some other states. Several big schools looking at Ga recruits but apparently no offers yet from UGA. Since UGA seems to do a good job of hanging on to a recruit once they commit, seems they need to get on it with some of the highly rated Ga kids. Then again, Richt has proven he certainly knows what he is doing as far as getting good recruits. Would like to see UGA and Tech lock up the Ga kids though.

Note: Tennessee has reported itself for three recruiting violations involving Kiffin. I’m sure he didn’t plan for that to happen. However, please keep in mind these are “secondary” violations, and are unlikely to result in any punishment from the NCAA and SEC, according to the Knoxville News. It appears he’ll still be able to recruit Bryce Brown, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 prospect by Rivals. Bottom line: While the latest violation doesn’t help Kiffin, it doesn’t necessarily hurt him either. Due to the violation, Kiffin maintains his stranglehold on being one of most popular topics in sports. Bad publicity, but still publicity.

Any hype or buzz going on today will not reflect where these kids will sign a year from now. Typical that UT fans would think they are all of a sudden going to derail Mark Richt and UGA football, especially in Georgia where UGA football is the winninget football program in the SEC the past ten seasons. Florida on the other hand will OWN UT for years until FSU and Miami start to win big again and sign a larger saher of top in-State players…something they aren’t doing. Whether Mack Brown goes to UT or elsewhere, it isn’t going to hurt UGA one bit. UT had very little glory before Fulmer, so where is that statement coming from?! Anytime UT had had success, it’s been when Bama and UGA were down. Now that’s not the case. Also, no new SEC coach in the past 50+ years who replaced a legend has been successful. Not one.

In the end Kiffin will be judged by what he does on the field. All of the off the field noise will only shorten UT alumni’s patience when it all starts to fall apart. UT starts off with home games against Western Kentucky and UCLA, meaning that Lane will be 2-0 and in rare form going into the game with UF at the Swamp. However, the next 5 games are UF, Ohio (easy win), Auburn, UGA and Bama. UT will loose 4 of those 5, with at least the UF, UGA and Bama games being blow outs. Suddenly a 3-4 record, blown out by your biggest rivals will not look quite so good. Lane has shown that he is good at blaming everyone around him for a loss (look at his history in Oakland). Once Bama completes that “rival sweep” of blow outs, Lane will be firing at everyone, his players, other coaches, you name it. That’s when the melt down will begin. This will be fun to watch…

Great article, we are thrilled to have Kiffin in Knoxville. We can sense the Gator and Tide fans frustrations from this kid, and he hasn’t even coached a game yet. With this great coaching staff, that has some of the greatest recruiters in the South, I don’t see how it can fail. Monte has the greatest defensive mind in footabll. Offensive coord, Jim Chaney had very explosive offenses at Purdue, and coached 2 great QB’s in Jim Everett and Drew Brees, the you can Look at the ones Kiffin coached at USC and you have some great experience. They may go 5-7 or 6-6 this year but watch out for the Big Orange in the future.

Might I remind everyone that in 2005 USC offense produced school records in virtually every dimension. Averaging 49.1 points per game and 579 yards per game. They also became the first school in NCAA history to have a 3000 yard passer (leinart), two 1000 yard rushers (bush & white) and a 1000 yard receiver (jarrett) all in the same year. one other receiver (smith) fell just short of 1000 yards in receiving AND that was considered to be a rebuilding year for USC. In 2006 they also had another 3000 plus passer and 2 receivers with 1000 plus yards, ALL UNDER KIFFIN. Kiffin went 23-3 in his career as Offensive Coordinator and Recruiting Coord. and had the top #1 Recruiting class for 3 years. With his Dad (considered to be one of the best Defenses Coaches in all of the NFL) this is definately going to be interesting for Tennessee. As a FEMALE orange blooded fan for 34 years I think the man is a marketing genius and look forward to seeing UGA, FLA, BAMA on the field in the coming years.

As far as the alleged recruting advantage he’ll have because all the kids will know who he is, a lot of them will also be advised(from
people they trust) of what an absolute jask-ass he is…I just can’t imagine parents of these kids encouraging their son to be influenced by

So let me get this straight. I am an idiot because you say so. All I said was, know what you are talking about before you post and now I am some POS fan who leaves games early. Nice. Well done Tony. How can I come back from that? Your right, Tennessee has been down for a few years although we were in the SEC championship game in 2007. And yes Urban has our number. What school’s number does he not have? The question will be can he do it without Tebow? Tebow is a once in a lifetime player that fits Meyer’s offense perfectly. What will Meyer do without him? Especially when other teams will be able to recruit against Florida by saying that no QB that Meyer has ever had has made a career out of the NFL. If you want to play college ball go to Florida if you want a shot at the NFL go anywhere else.

I don’t expect to beat Florida in the swamp next year but we didn’t hire Kiffin for next year. He (hopefully) is a long term solution. And, even if it doesn’t work out, he should be able to recruit a bunch of talent and leave the next coach in good shape, a la Coach O at Ole Miss.

I don’t see what I said that would imply that I leave game early, perhaps you can explain Tony? Or perhaps you were just (once again) posting about things you have no idea about.

Finally, what in the world makes you think we will be on probation? Every school in America racks up secondary violations. Mark Richt had 17 last year. Who cares? Please enlighten me Tony because your wisdom is truly astounding.

By the way I called some other guy and idiot, Tony, not you. Perhaps my words should have been directed at you though. Everyone that knows anything about football thinks Monte Kiffin is good. I doubt his defenses will be that much better than the Chavis defenses but I will defer to people that know more than I do. The fact that you are saying its a bad hire proves you have no idea what you are talking about.

Scroll though your posts and tell me they aren’t the most unsubstantiated wildly idiotic statements you have ever read. Kiffin is gay. UT fans are redneck homos. I feel like I am on the playground in 3rd grade.

cgatlanta- finally someone is actually talking football. All of you points are valid but I guess what I was getting at was Meyer has never been anywhere long enough to say whether or not he can sustain a program. What he has done is incredible, I sure hope he can’t keep it up. My comment about no NFL QBs was directed more to recruiting. It will be interesting to see if Meyer will be able to continually get top high school QBs when they don’t have an NFL future by playing at UF. If Meyer can find guys that are okay with that then great for him. We will see.

Yes it is sad that a still proud program is counting their losses before spring ball. But we won 5 games last year and Florida won the National Championship and returns all their talent. I would be crazier than Tony if I was expecting a UT win. The fact that we aren’t the team that we used to be is the reason a change had to be made. It’s not going to be an over-night thing but hopefully in 2-3 years we will be relevant again. Luckily (as this article points out) we are already relevant again in recruiting.

If Kiffin doesn’t work out then he will look like a complete ass but hopefully he will leave a ton of talent so UT will be successful in the future. I don’t know of many programs that get their long term solution in the first hire. Even the great Florida hired Zook. Hopefully Kiffin will win or be UT’s Zook.

SEC fans calling another SEC school’s fans rednecks is a perfect example of the pot calling the kettle black. On the redneck hierarchy, Tennessee is nowhere near the level of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, or the north Florida swamps that are home to the Gators. Georgia, South Carolina, Arkansas and Kentucky sit on around the same level as Tennessee. If you’re an SEC fan and think that your school doesn’t have its share of redneck fans, then you’re absolutely kidding yourself. FYI, Auburn has on campus housing in trailers.

Lane Kiffin has implemented daily offseason workouts at 5am eveyday. There are reports that there are new haircuts, no nose rings or thug like apparel being tolerated. Assistant coaches are showing up in the classrooms to make sure players are in attendance. He has released players who don’t comply with the new disciplines. The players are buying in to the new program. Despite what some of the idiots are posting here, he now has a top notch recruiting and coaching staff. He is only recruiting players who fit into his system and are up to his standards. Will all of this translate to wins on the field? Time will tell, but it looks like a pretty good plan to me.

There are guidelines for offseason workouts if coaches are present. Sounds like Kiffy is lining up another recruiting violation. Discipline rules are great, wonder when Kiffy is going to start demonstrating discipline of his own mouth? Public drunkenness policy for his assistants might not be a bad move either. Based upon recent actions, it seems there is a greater need for for the coach and his staff to learn something about discipline and public appearance.

I’m a South Carolina fan but I always pulled for UT when we didn’t play them. What the UT fans may see as energizing the Vol nation, the rest of college football sees as the silly acts of an immature brat. Kiffin is quickly isolating himself from the rest of the SEC and the only problem with that is he doesn’t have the talent level to fight toe to toe with UF, Ala or UGA. Another point that interests me is everyone has ordained Monte as the absolute defensive guru. Sure he’s had success at the NFL level and has been in the NFL as a DC or position coach since 1983. But he’s not in the NFL any more and he doesn’t have NFL talent any more. The three years he was head coach at NC St (1980, 81 & 82) he went 16-17. He was fired after the 82 season and when to the NFL. His college record is not too stellar and the general knock on older coaches is they don’t relate well with the younger kids. I’m not sure Monte will be the savior of the UT defense. In my opinion, they should be thrilled Kiffin hired Coach O as defensive line coach. That was his best hire. From as outside perspective, Kiffin needs to grow up and shut up.

Let’s get this straight. It’s okay to recruit 12-year-olds. It’s okay for an inebriated Bob Huggins to ralph on his car door in public. It was okay for Ohio State to wave their magic wand, pull a rabbit out of a hat, and make Andy Katzenmoyer eligible in the mid/late 1990s. It was fine for NC State to admit Chris Washburn with a supposed SAT score of 380 in the 1980s

But it’s not okay for a man who is the future head coach of a signed talent to celebrate with him a fantastic academic achievement.

The SEC and ACC can now stop paying for those commercials during games that highlight the academic universe of their respective universities. It’s clear that this is not the image the NCAA wants to portray.

They could also say that the coaches can’t recruit (talk to) underclassmen at graduations.

Also hear of 5-7, 6-6 records. Blah-blah-blah. Same diarrhea of the mouth from the same loudmouths. Morons, UGA is going to win 9+ games per season under Richt, and Kiffin/Orgeron/whoever from UT isn’t going to change any of that. Nor is that staff going to damage the Florida, LSU or Alabama program. What a joke. Kiffin is and will be looking up at those four coaches, even if he does occasionally win 8 or 9 games (he will never be as successful as Fulmer). And don’t let me forget Spurrier who is also building a pretty strong team. And Monte Kiffin was successful at Tampa PRIMARILY because of Tony Dungy’s and Rich McKay’s draft picks. He is the young, new kid in town and theses coaches know that he is a force to be dealt with in recruiting because of the above mentioned reasons. That’s the real deal behind this. tennesse has had a few players from the West Coast on there rosters in the past..Expect more now that this coaching staff has been put in place. Since all the other so-called SEC powers aint got the balls to play USC, maybe Tennesse will. Hey all!

I don’t normally do a lot of posting on these forums. I mostly read to hear what everyone is thinking. But after reading these posts I just felt the need to put some words out there.

first: To TonytheGator

Who do you think you are, a relative of Tony the Tiger or something? Do you think you can get away with your idiotic comments without being called to mat on them? You are the most negative poster I have ever read. All you do is put out useless drivel slamming CLK and the VOLs as if you know what you are talking about. Do us all a favor, both the VOL fans and the fans of college football all together, and take your mullet wearing, redneck, toothless grin, uneducated, mindless ramblings to some other board. We don’t appreciate you here.

Second. Something for all to consider. After next season is over and the dust has settled we will know if CLK and staff has what it takes to compete. Until then, it is all speculation and guesswork on our part.

Third. For the Gator nation. Things are looking very good for you guys to repeat as NCs next year. Even as a VOL fan, I can recognize that. But after that, what will happen? Tebow will be gone, and something else to consider, where will CUM be? If ND has another down year, they may just payout CCWs contract. If that happens, it is a good bet that CUM will jump ship at florida and head to ND.

Forth. As a long time VOL fan, I am enjoying all of the heat, smack, and excitment that has not been around the VOL program for a long time. For me, it is an exciting time to be a VOL. Will CLKs commits, and his ruffling of feathers equate to success on the field? I certianly hope so, but as I mentioned before, the answer to that will not come until fall.

Fifth. That’s all. I look forward to the upcoming season and fully expect the VOLs to surprise a lot people. To all of you, regardless of you school affiliation, good luck next year!

Do all of you GA, FL, and AL fans really expect anyone to believe you’re not scared? Considering the reactions to this article from you so-called SEC fans. I can almost see the foam forming around some of your mouths responding to the Vol posters. I am not a fan of any SEC team at all but, even I can see that you guys are abviously a little concerned otherwise you wouldn’t be making so much fuss about anything LK says publicly. I mean there was an Ole Miss or Mississippi State coach that got caught driving drunk, cussed out the cops and was reportedly disorderly and uncompliant when arrested but, all I have heard about out of the SEC is Lane Kiffin talking sh** about Meyer!!! I don’t care what delusion you live in but, the writer is correct. The more UT is in front of the camera, especially with their coach basically stepping up to the table with the supposed “big boys” like Meyer and Saban and isn’t tepid or in awe. You guys are just pissed off that LK is kissing your coaches’ rear ends like you expect any new SEC coach to do. Most high school kids are against the “establishment” and love the rebel image. Kiffin could well be positioning himself as the anti-thesis to the regular everyday SEC coaches, giving himself an memorable, and respected position in the eyes of a future recruit. Anyway, whatever the case I tend to agree with the author above in many respects. I am a UM fan, and would prefer for the entire SEC to be disbanded tomorrow but, until then I will be satisfied with someone else inside the conference getting better to help beat the crap out of each other even more every year. Eventually, you guys will beat each other up so much that no one will be better than a five hundred record and some of the rest of us can actually play for national championship again, hooray!!!!

You are so right, BigVolFan,
TonytheGator must enjoy talking to himself – and reading his countless posts. The fact is Kiffin has energized the Tennessee team and fan base. He has reinstituted discipline across the team – on and off the field – something that was sorely lacking under Fulmer.

His passion for the game and for winning will translate well on the field and in the hearts of the Vols players – something else that hasn’t happened in years. Kiffin will have Tennessee back on track as one of the best teams in the nation in a few years. Tennessee is and always will be one of the most successful college football programs in the country – with tradition that goes deeper than most in the game.

So Tony and others – why don’t you stop looking for something to go negative about – and just watch it play out on the field. In the short term I’m sure the gators will have the Vols number – but give it a couple of years…

A coach that has already intensified conditioning drills like no one else, who personally checks on a player’s attendance in class, and has banned earrings, baggy pants, ipods, and all the &^%%$# most teams let fly, is making his mark early and often on a team that is bound to be more passionate, hungry, and successful on the field and off.

Get ready – the Vols are coming back – and you know it.

Anytime a coach can fire up Vol fans this much before he even takes the field is starting off beautifully! Please don’t doubt that Vol fans are excited – I run a bar on the strip in Knoxville, and I can report that we’re all lovin’ it.

Anyone who doesn’t believe Kiffin has hired a great staff who can recruit with anyone just isn’t paying attention. Here’s to proving it on the field in the years to come!

Coach Richt certainly appears to have a classy approach to recruitment. And it is surely effective. He should certainly get credit for that. But, I’m not sure that UGA tends to hold off it offers more than other schools. Last year, at least 14 players were not only offered but committed before September. I assume that some of the others had been offered, but had not yet committed. They had a great year, but many were offered early — for what its worth.

I’d like to see the commitment go both ways.
The school has committed to the kid a free college education, so the commitment from the kid should be to stay and graduate.

Most high school juniors are not capable of committing to anything, but there are exceptions. It would be better for everyone if colleges waited until after the recruit’s senior football season to offer scholarships. Offering a scholarship to a 10th grader is absurd. If the 10th grader in question is injured in high school and can’t play, will the school still honor the scholarship? I don’t think so.

Michael,
Speaking of commitment, what is the latest on Orson Charles? Did USC become a serious contender after this weekend? When is he planning on announcing his decision? Tks.

Hey, Coach Johnson… did you worry about the definition of “commitment” when you signed Jaybo Shaw in your 2008 signing class? You remember the kid… the one that had previously “committed” to Middle Tennessee State before you recruited him, had him “commit” to you, and sign him?

Seems to me like the definition of “commitment” isn’t something you need to be worrying about… what you should be doing is pulling out a dictionary and looking up the definition of “hypocrite”.

Although the article was somewhat interesting, I was more intrigued by the photo of Michael Carvell… He is extremely hot!!
