Notre Dame among the finalists for Georgia WR Tai-ler Jones

Gainesville wide receiver Tai-ler Jones, who will announce his college decision on Thursday, has Notre Dame among his finalists.

There’s a good reason. His father, Andre Jones, played linebacker and defensive end for Notre Dame. The younger Jones has narrowed down to UGA, North Carolina, Stanford, California, UCLA, Ohio State and the Fighting Irish. He is one of the nation’s leaders in early scholarships offers with 32.

“Notre Dame is a great school … and I know that because my dad says that about every day,” Jones said with a laugh.

“He tells me all the time about his experiences, and how the college life and connections you make at Notre Dame are different than any other school in the country,” Jones said. “It’s like one big brotherhood, and they all help each other out.”

Jones said he feels like better days are ahead for Notre Dame, which posted records of 3-9 and 7-6 over the last two seasons under Charlie Weis. “Because they are Notre Dame, they are going to get the recruits to help them succeed. In any given year, like when my dad signed there, they can have a great year in recruiting and then compete for the national championship.”

How would Jones feel about following in his father’s footsteps? “It’s a great feeling for my dad for me to recruited by Notre Dame. It’s his alma mater, and I know he’d love to see me run out of the tunnel in the blue and gold. They’re one of my top schools.” Jone attended one Notre Dame game, last year’s matchup with Michigan.

Notre Dame has been quiet with its recent recruiting efforts in Georgia, signing only one prospect from the state over the last three years. Jones visited Stanford, California and UCLA last week over spring break. He claims no favorites and will commit on Thursday at Gainesville High.

    1. 7B-AAA North Hall lost to Jones’ old school by 2 points, per AJC, this pre-season. Jones’ school soundly beat North Hall. So, there’s no talent deficit or inferior competition.
    2. You have several post bashing Jones. Doesn’t sound like Jones is your issue. Maybe you should send your slanted vents to the coaches of the WR’s you feel have been over-looked. Or send film to the colleges you feel could benefit those kids. Bashing defenseless kids doesn’t further your cause and it makes you look bitter and jealous.
    3. Sean Bailey is no A.J. Green, so who cares. Be the best player you can be and let others like you judge..
    4. Jones sounds like his final 7 colleges will offer him success in life and a chance to further his education.. Isn’t that what all of this is about anyway? Football is the perk, not the leading factor..

Who cares what team, get the degree… The joke is on all of these kids who think they are going to go pro, end up hurt, without the degree. Then they look back and say, man, I should have taken school more seriously.. That’s the big a-hah moment..

Actually irishmist there are plenty of Irish fans who don’t want Urban Meyer. He was offer and never took the job, why offer him again?

It’s not that the other 2 are necessarily that great (1 is a senior but wasn’t seriously recruited; the other may be a 1-AA or lower level D-1 prospect). Jones simply wasn’t that highly regarded, which may be why his dad took him to a school that throws the ball a lot and plays inferior competition.

College recruiters make mistakes all the time. I saw the kid from Tift play in the Georgia Dome against Jones’ old school, and saw nothing to indicate that he was worthy of a Georgia scholarship. Maybe he’ll prove me wrong, but at this stage, he hasn’t.

Maybe Jones has improved to the degree that he is worth being pursued by all these big-time programs. But I remain skeptical based on what I saw and have heard since.

My frame of reference for a big time college prospect WR is Sean Bailey, who was exceptional in high school and played pretty well for the ‘Dogs. Jones is no Sean Bailey.

He has to select the school that feels best to a 17-18 year old. Not what everyone says is best for him. I hope he gets to make his own choice. Where ever he goes he will make good, lifelong friends. He knows what feels right for him and I wish him good luck. He may turn out to be a great player, but only time will tell about that.

I don’t believe ND nation has an overall great feeling about landing Jones.
ND will be better this year because of our easy schedule, but we are also starting to build depth at every position. UGA obviously has more talent but don’t count out the irish. Good luck all.

Scout – I didn’t know ND plays 1AA teams. You do know that schedules are made in advance, right. You wanna rip ND for it’s schedule, but go look at Bama and PSU schedule this year.. It’s about as terrible as NDs. You can try to justify the so call tough SEC schedule, when yet they play teams like Troy and Appy State while playing tough teams in their conference like Vandy, Miss State, and Kentucky. Your arugment is moot..

Brock D – “ND has had a top 3 class for 4 years straight.”

    2006 ND #8 in recruiting
    2007 ND #8 in recruiting
    2008 ND #1 in recruiting
    2009 ND #21 in recruiting

Where are these so called 4 straight years? I quote Jim Calhoun in saying, “Get your facts straight and than come and talk to us!”

Recruiting Skeptic: Just out of curiosity, does ND & UGA know about these WR’s?? If they’re better than Jones, then they must be big time recruits. Not that UGA doesn’t cover the state, but we could use a few great wr’s right now. Do you have a name(s) for us? Tks..
