Florida’s Urban Meyer offers Georgia’s No. 1 sophomore prospect

BCS champs want Vaughters (Tucker Tigers Football)

The reigning BCS champions want James Vaughters (Tucker Tigers Football)

Florida coach Urban Meyer jumped into the sweepstakes for Georgia’s No. 1 sophomore.

Tucker LB James Vaughters made an unofficial visit to Florida, and sat down with Meyer for about 45 minutes. Florida is offer No. 8 for Vaughters, who also has scholarships promised from UGA, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Clemson, Stanford, N.C. State and Central Florida.

“It was great to meet Coach Meyer,” Vaughters told the AJC on Friday. “Florida has won two national championships in the last three years. He let me see the rings and everything.”

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Vaughters claims no early favorites. His eyes got big when he was shown around the campus of the reigning BCS champions. “They definitely put a lot into weightlifting. Florida’s weight room is bigger than gyms I’ve seen. [Meyer] seems very interested in character, which is something else that is very good.”

“[Meyer] was also talking about how the team goes to church at 2 p.m. on Sundays. They also have a religious meeting before the games. That’s very important to me. If I went to Florida, I wouldn’t have to worry about finding a church home because they already have that put together.”

Vaughters also discovered that he had an unique connection with Urban Meyer. His mother was a student at the University of Cincinnati that same time Meyer and his wife were there. They didn’t know each other at the time, but they do now. Vaughters checked out Florida on Thursday and is headed to Central Florida for Saturday.

This past season, Vaughters was one of the top defenders for Tucker High School, which won Georgia’s Class AAAA championship and was overloaded with prospects. Tucker is one of the state’s top annual producers of football recruits, and had five seniors sign with major colleges last February.

Valdosta tight end Jay Rome, and Gainesville linebacker A.J. Johnson are some of the state’s other top prospects for 2011. The most impressive thing about Vaughters is not only is he one of the nation’s elite linebackers, he also boasts a 4.0 GPA, which makes him as “automatic” as it gets when offering a sophomore.

Man I just don’t know about recruiting and offering kids when they are sophomores! How can a kid make a committment for 3 years away? I don’t blame the schools for doing it if it’s not illegal but it just seems it should be against the rules. The NCAA needs some new rules…By the way 6′2″ 220…what do they feed those kids up there???

Hey Champ, at least football isn’t as bad as basketball. UK offered an 8th grader a scholarship last year. 8TH GRADE! No wonder these ‘kids’ have egos and some don’t worry as much about academics.

“Meyer is very interested in character?” I just spit my drink all over my computer! Isn’t that like saying Bill Clinton is very interested in monogamy?

What do we have now at last count for Florida wide receivers–two dopers in the past week?

Hilarious!

Hm…4.0 GPA? I knew there had to be something else about this kid that got Tech’s attention real quick. Don’t get me wrong, he appears as a really good athlete. I just hope that he doesn’t get pressured too much this early on in recruiting. Best of luck.

Vaughters is coming to Georgia Tech. He’s a secret commitment. He won’t be playing for preacher coach and the mutts. Neither will Stephen Hill. JV, Tucker High School and GT have something in common: We are both the 2008 STATE champions!!! We both got rings to prove it. 45-42, 45-42, 45-42. CPJ for President.

If you want a true human being and all around great person to send you to the NFL son, you’ll go to UGA. UGA will tell you the truth. Id like for any rival poster on here to name one kid that has transferred fron UGA football out of disgust and hate. Since CMR has been there…not ONE! YOu get the truth here. Cant say the same about UF. They have had several. Tech puts kids in the NFL don’t they? LMAO. UF puts them there also but not before they fail drug tests and blow Wonderlic test scores wide open….12? How in the world did Harvin pass the SAT or did he? LMAO. NO issues with UGA my friend. Id be willing to bet our program has more godly teachings in it than any program in this country and I would also bet that UGA would make you a productive member of society even if you didn’t go to the NFL. How many ten win season since CMRhas been there? Thats what I thought. I laugh when I hear Oscar Meyer talk about Church meetings and such. Devil in disguise. UGA is your home!

Meyer is interested in character????????? Made me laugh out loud. Virtually every school in the SEC puts football prowess above academics and character (Vandy excepted). But that comment is sooooo absurd, there is no program in the SEC that sells out its integrity for football more than Florida does under Meyer. Not even UGa stoops as low as UF does.

I find myself hoping for UF to fail in football simply because it is hard to root for the school that has the LOWEST average SAT scores of any school in the FBS division of Div I…the lowest ..in the nation. It’s AVERAGE SAT scores could not get admitted to most ACC schools, imagine what some of their lower scores are. Kinda like Percy Harvin getting the lowest score of all seniors tested on the Wunderlich. Disgusting, and disgusting that they are not up front about it.

Notice how the bugs are insanely jealous of the recruiting process. “It’s not right to offer at such a young age”, which is translated to, “we’ll never get him, so I hope nobody else does either”.

Regarding the negative comments concerning CUM, he is an upstanding person and obviously a great coach. Please don’t attack the man personally for situations that are out of his control. Not a damned one of you out there knows what really goes on in the recruiting process and is then spun and broadcast for all to misinterpret. The fact is I’m jealous of the success of UF, but I’m thrilled with Richt and his upstanding character. I beleive that he’d probably frown on negative comments concerning his freind, yes friend Coach Urban Meyer,

Meyer is a great teacher / leader / person. So is Richt.

Ask Tim Tebow, who is one of the greatest college players in history and could go down as THE best, about Meyer. Do you think THAT guy might have a little character to him??? Ask Brandon Spikes, who bypassed millions of $$$ to come back to play for Meyer his senior season. Ask the parents of the Pouncey twins about Meyer. Ask Dallas Baker, who was a total screw-up both athletically and academically when Meyer got there…and now has a degree and is playing in the NFL. Ask Chris Leak, one of the finest most upstanding individuals you will meet, about Meyer. Ask Jarvis Moss, who was saddled for two years with a hidden medical issue that almost made him quit football until Meyer got to Florida and insisted that the doctors look into it. Found the problem and he became a star at DE (you know what that is, don’t you Georgia?), a national champion and a first round NFL pick! In another words, for every one BAD example, I can give you 10 GOOD ones!!!…And by the way, get the REAL facts about SAT and graduation rates…not from these UGA/Gator haters with an agenda!

Nobody in the South can compete with Bama’s tradition. Possibly Notre Dame nationally. You place Nick Saban leading that storied program and it’s the best one-two punch in recruiting. Herbstreit mentioned Georgia had 30k for the Black-Day event. Look for Bama fans to show why they are the most passionate in college football. When ESPN shows up this Saturday, expect 85,000 loyal Tide supporters. When Saban realized Bama’s A-Day event fell on Easter weekend, he quickly changed dates so it wouldn’t inconvienence folks celebrationg Easter.

Its interesting to read everyones comments regarding their favorite schools, you guys are great. James continues to do a wonderful job in school and is maintaining his humble demeanor. His parents continue to give James an opportunity to see the options available and not rush into a program that does not offer the best mix of athletics and academics. It would be wonderful if society focused more energy on scholarship and less on sports. James continue to be an inspiration to your cousins and friends. Good luck on your Junior year.

Urban Meyer isnt even a christian he is a Catholic. Mr. Vaughters it would really be nice to see you sign with the university of Georgia like all the other greats from Tucker High who have been bulldogs in the past. Unlike Florida, Georgia really needs you at linebacker and probably other positions you would get more playing time at Georgia because we will have alot of linebakers leaving soon and goin to the NFL. Florida just wants you to steal recruits from our state like they try every year.

Hey Jon– Tell us how many of those 7 national chamionship seasons Bama lost it’s bowl game in…and then compare that to how many they were Co-national champions for. And also, how many of those 85,000 “loyal” Tide supporters went to the Sugarbowl last year? Pathetic. I used to respect Bama’s program till I actually checked all these facts.

As far as Meyer goes – He has the highest graduation rate in the SEC and has won uncontested NC’s 2 of the past 3 years. Looks to me like he’s taking boys and making them into men… doesn’t matter what team you cheer for..gotta respect that even if we don’t like it.

Oh, I forgot to give credit to Urban Meyers wife Shelly. Ive seen the interaction, she is like a mother to a lot of those players and there is very much a family atmosphere. If you ever get the chance, read a little bit on Chris Rainey and his life. I think that both Meyer and Richt are good men who have the best interest of their players at heart. So for many recruits it comes down to academics and support, athletic program and training, facilities, location, relationships and comfort level, fan support and fervor and campus life. Florida offers ALL of that and more!

James, I am so proud of you. I’ve watched you grow over the years and your commitment not only to sports but most importantly to your academics is highly commendable. Keep up the good work, stay focused, don’t get caught up in the hype, and please, please don’t listen to these idiots who think they know you. Be true to yourself. You have a great family, a solid foundation, a strong work ethic, and therefore it doesn’t matter where you go to school – you will be a success.

Yep, it is HILARIOUS reading the comments of the mutts on this thread. And to think I spent 7 months in Augusta way back in 2005 while going to an army school, but the church I attended had a Gator pastor trying to sway the poor souls of the misguided Jawja folk.

It’ll be hard to sway a kid away from the dark, evil side of the farce, especially when RIcht lays it on think about how they go to church too; but in the end, hopefully he’ll want to play for a real football school that WINS championships and doesn’t whimper and whine about moving games from my hometown of Jville and hasn’t even competed for a NC in nearly THIRTY (30) YEARS!!!

Even the Zookster won 2 outta 3 times (and almost won a third time with his worse UF squads against one of Jawja’s best squads in years!)
