Alabama’s Nick Saban rolls into Georgia for 2010 prospects

Alabama’s Nick Saban dampened UGA’s national championship hopes last year. Now Saban is returning to the state to inflict more damage.

Gainesville QB Blake Sims is the latest 2010 prospect to pledge to Alabama. Sims picked the Crimson Tide over UGA, Michigan, Tennessee and West Virginia, among others.

Alabama has as many commitments from the state as Georgia Tech (3), and more than UGA (1). The other Tuscaloosa-bound prospects are North Gwinnett OL Austin Shephard and Westside-Macon WR Ronald Carswell.

The big questions are these: Now that Saban is scoring big early in Georgia, will he be able to finish as strong as he started with recruiting? And will he be able to hold on to the commitments he has? So far, so good.

UGA touched base with Sims this week, asking if he wanted to take another look at the Bulldogs. “[Assistant John Jancek] wanted me to come down there, so they could roll out the red carpet like Alabama did for me last weekend,” Sims said. “I told him thanks for the invitation, and I appreciated it. It was hard to turn down Georgia. I grew up a Georgia fan. I’ve been good friends with [Mark Richt] since my freshman year.”

“But I’ve already picked my school, and I’m going to keep my word because [Saban] gave me his word.”

Saban closed the deal with Sims at a dizzying pace. It was the stuff of recruiting legends. Last Wednesday, Sims said West Virginia, Michigan and UGA were his top three choices. Thursday, Alabama offered out of the blue. Friday, Sims talked to Saban for the first time in his life. Saturday, Sims visited Alabama for the first time. Within a few hours, Saban had Sims so fired up he was ready to learn words to the school fight song.

“Coach Saban showed me love, lots of love,” Sims said. “He let me know I was very important to the future of Alabama football. I was head over heels about the place. I surprised myself by committing. I just looked up and asked God to help me with my college decision.”

The quick commitment by Sims abruptly ended a long travel itinerary for his family over spring break. They were headed to West Virginia the next day, and then Michigan by the end of the week.

However, the recruiting journey has just begun for Sims, along with rest of Alabama’s seven overall commitments. As with all the top prospects, Sims will be pursued by other schools until he signs the scholarship papers in February. He got 11 letters from colleges on Thursday, including hand-written cards from coaches at West Virginia and Michigan.

Nice start by Nick Saban with next year’s recruiting class, especially in Georgia. We’ll see where everything stands in 10 months.

BAMAKJ, those 2ND CLASS Shula boys you speak of won 12 games this year. Saban won with Shula’s boys, the majority of the ones on the field were NOT freshmen or sophomores instead leaders like JPW. Btw, don’t make us look STUPID. UGA WAS without their starting LT for most of the year. They lost their starting LT and #1 DT. Imagine us without Cody or Smith, well you saw what happens in the sugar bowl.

Andre Smith was not the reason Bama lost the bowl game, that is pretty funny. Nor will he be picked in the top 6 in the draft. Bama lost in the bowl game to me for the same reason UGA lost to WVU. It is hard for kids to get excited playing a school like Utah or WVU in a bowl game-you just don’t have the same focus. Oklahoma was the same way with Boise. The Bama defense certainly didn’t come to play against Utah either, I don’t think Mr. Smith played on the defense for the Tide.

Folks need to chill out. The kid decided to leave the state, wish him well and move on. It does make you wonder how he could go from no offer one day and a top three that didn’t include Bama, to having an offer, meeting the coach, visiting the campus and commiting all in a matter of 48 hours. Saban must have really impressed him and the kid must have really just wanted to get his decision out of the way. Who really knows and cares, just wish him the best. UGA will be fine in the QB category and also fine at any other position this young man might play in college.

Saban is smart to recruit in Georgia and I think he will continue to do so. His home state does not produce nearly as many D1 football players so he has to look around elsewhere. Might as well come into Ga and look and see if you can grab a few here and there. UGA looks around and signs out of state players as well as do most other programs. Tenn will be heavily involved here as will Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State and SCarolina. Bottom line is, UGA is typically going to get most everyone they really want in state. They will lose some sure but by and large, they get the top talent they want in the state of Georgia.

UM and Richt each had decent talent when they got to their schools, Saban had a bunch of 2nd class Shula boys to work with and to see his truly first recruiting class come out as well as they did is great. As far as losing in the Sugar Bowl, do you think GA would have won anything without Herschel or Florida win a thing without Tebow, well we were without our Starting left Tackle #6 projection in this years NFL draft, that is what cost us the Sugar Bowl, nothing else….

Bwell, the only thing you left out was “Go Gator!”

If Saban is telling the Sims kid he is going to be a SEC quarterback, you might want to check his height, he looks a couple inches taller than Saban and isn’t Saban a short man himself ? I was just wondering if Saban was telling him what he wants to here like he does with most of the recruits, and Blake should pay close attention to what other QB’s bama offers this year to actually see where he stands, commenting too early may not be a good thing.

[...] *** QB/ATH Blake Sims Commits to Alabama *** A good read from today’s AJC. . . it sounds like CNS did some whirlwind [...]

Lil Sims is full of it! How do you grow a Ga fan your entire life and then switch to a school that wasn’t on your radar. Sims stated that he has known coach Richt since his freshman year, okay what about respect for coach Richt and his staff. What did coach Saban offer the kid money. What? the kid is not shown any love at home (parents). Ala roll out the red carpet? Give me a break they will do anything to get you to their school. Ga is very professional, Ga have no need to play on a kids mind, if Ga offer guess what you are special. Where is the kid parents; what do they say. Have he passed the SAT or ACT yet.
