Alabama’s Nick Saban rolls into Georgia for 2010 prospects

Alabama’s Nick Saban dampened UGA’s national championship hopes last year. Now Saban is returning to the state to inflict more damage.

Gainesville QB Blake Sims is the latest 2010 prospect to pledge to Alabama. Sims picked the Crimson Tide over UGA, Michigan, Tennessee and West Virginia, among others.

Alabama has as many commitments from the state as Georgia Tech (3), and more than UGA (1). The other Tuscaloosa-bound prospects are North Gwinnett OL Austin Shephard and Westside-Macon WR Ronald Carswell.

The big questions are these: Now that Saban is scoring big early in Georgia, will he be able to finish as strong as he started with recruiting? And will he be able to hold on to the commitments he has? So far, so good.

UGA touched base with Sims this week, asking if he wanted to take another look at the Bulldogs. “[Assistant John Jancek] wanted me to come down there, so they could roll out the red carpet like Alabama did for me last weekend,” Sims said. “I told him thanks for the invitation, and I appreciated it. It was hard to turn down Georgia. I grew up a Georgia fan. I’ve been good friends with [Mark Richt] since my freshman year.”

“But I’ve already picked my school, and I’m going to keep my word because [Saban] gave me his word.”

Saban closed the deal with Sims at a dizzying pace. It was the stuff of recruiting legends. Last Wednesday, Sims said West Virginia, Michigan and UGA were his top three choices. Thursday, Alabama offered out of the blue. Friday, Sims talked to Saban for the first time in his life. Saturday, Sims visited Alabama for the first time. Within a few hours, Saban had Sims so fired up he was ready to learn words to the school fight song.

“Coach Saban showed me love, lots of love,” Sims said. “He let me know I was very important to the future of Alabama football. I was head over heels about the place. I surprised myself by committing. I just looked up and asked God to help me with my college decision.”

The quick commitment by Sims abruptly ended a long travel itinerary for his family over spring break. They were headed to West Virginia the next day, and then Michigan by the end of the week.

However, the recruiting journey has just begun for Sims, along with rest of Alabama’s seven overall commitments. As with all the top prospects, Sims will be pursued by other schools until he signs the scholarship papers in February. He got 11 letters from colleges on Thursday, including hand-written cards from coaches at West Virginia and Michigan.

Nice start by Nick Saban with next year’s recruiting class, especially in Georgia. We’ll see where everything stands in 10 months.

SR, so you just admitted it’s a popularity contest. Second, what team did FLA beat that was the right team? They backed in but I’m glad they beat the lousy Little10 up north.

FSU fan, I’m not sure what the record of Richt vs Saban is, but I believe it is 2-3. Richt lost a close one in death valley 17-10 I believe with 4 TO’s and got spanked in the SECCG (the year lsu won the nc) and richt returned the favor in athens the next year 45-16 in athens. he won in titletown and lost in athens this year.

It’s called beating the right team. OU and UT had identical records. However, OU beat the team that beat UT, even though UT had beat them. That is called making it count.

Please tell us sound reasoning what exactly Meyer did that made it count? Richt won his BCS game he was ‘assigned’ to as did Meyer. So Meyer calculated his LOSS knowing he would still make it to the NCG? I would love to have his calculator. Maybe Richt can call Meyer and ask which game to lose where he can make it since Meyer obviously has ‘the timing’ figured out??? Please share what the secret is.

JB, I don’t care about or follow GA or the SEC, but I know Saban beat Richt last year, he beat him in a regular season game in Baton Rogue a few years ago and he absolutely stomped Richt in the sec title game one year and those are just the ones I remember

MtnBama, according to Sims himself, he was promised early PT. But, that is what they all want all these kids want to hear. Bama is down this year in HS talent, so I would expect Saban to come to GA/FLA/TN. AU gets A LOT of players from GA as does TN. UGA can’t sign them all (like ole miss did last year)

Bama will get tested this year without QB John parker Wilson. Not the greatest skills in the world, but he was a winner. Bama will miss him. I for one am looking forward to Joe Cox. Matt had the big arm, but I think Joe will manage the game better. Georgia went three and out a lot last year because of his arm, and of course our D couldn’t catch their breath. We will have longer drives this year which will help the D.

There have been more National Champions with a loss than undefeated. So, it’s the timing of the loss that makes the difference. That’s called making it count.

Coach Saban did not promise Sims early playing time, he promised him the opportunity to compete for the qb position. Blake Sims is not stupid, he is totally aware of the competition at the position. Sims is also aware of the fact that he is likely not the only qb that Bama will sign this year. The state of Georgia usually produces more quality players than UGA can accomodate and Auburn and Tenn have traditionally signed those players, but today Alabama is getting them because, well because we have Coach Saban.Best of luck to all, please be civil.
