Denzel McCoy picks Georgia Tech over FSU, Auburn, UNC, Notre Dame and Tennessee

DT Denzel McCoy committed to Georgia Tech

DT Denzel McCoy committed to Georgia Tech (AJC)

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said he felt like he could recruit against any school in the nation for the state’s top prospects.

Northview defensive tackle Denzel McCoy committed to Georgia Tech over 34 offers on Saturday. McCoy picked the Yellow Jackets because “they felt like home and they were close to home, along with great academics.”

The 6-foot-4, 270-pound McCoy said his second choice was Florida State, while he was also heavily considering Auburn, Notre Dame, North Carolina and Tennessee.

“Georgia Tech really cares about you as a football player and a person, they want to get you suited up for life,” McCoy said. “A lot of colleges talk about only ‘football, football and football.’ Georgia Tech talks about academics first, and then football.”

McCoy attended Georgia Tech’s spring practice on Saturday. He had been thinking about holding off with his college decision, but changed his mind after meeting with school officials about academics. “I have good grades, and they showed me that I could be admitted with the grades and test scores that I currently have. They showed me all the paperwork for admissions. That was great, I’d never seen anybody do that.” McCoy will major in computer science.

Northview coach Jim Showfety gave rave reviews to his prized prospect. “Denzel is a young man filled with character. He has been a leader for us. He is going to make Georgia Tech very proud with the way he handles himself. Now he can relax and focus on his senior season of football.”

McCoy also said that Georgia Tech indicated they were planning to sign only one defensive tackle this year, and he wanted to fill the spot. Some of McCoy’s other offers were Alabama, Auburn, Penn State, North Carolina, Duke, N.C. State, Oklahoma State, Miami, LSU, Stanford, Michigan State, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida State, Central Florida, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Maryland, Notre Dame, Memphis, Louisville, and West Virginia. McCoy said he was also hearing from Southern Cal, Oklahoma and UGA.

Georgia Tech’s Paul Johnson told the AJC last month that he felt good about his chances recruiting against any schools for the state’s top prospects.

“I think recruiting is recruiting, no matter where you’re at,” Johnson said. “You’re recruiting against different people, but it doesn’t change the way you recruit. It’s all about building relationships, and being honest and trustworthy, guys knowing where you are coming from. They can see the plan you have for them.”

“It doesn’t matter if you’re Army or Navy recruiting against Air Force, or Georgia Tech recruiting against anybody. It’s still the same, it’s just a different type of kid. We’re recruiting different people, but the actual recruiting part is still the same.”

Northview’s Showfety has been impressed by Johnson, who was previously at Navy. “I think he is great at recruiting. It goes without saying, after what he was able to do in his first year at Georgia Tech …. He realizes that the state of Georgia is very important to his recruiting, and it appears he’s making every effort to make as many [of the state's prospects] as possible go to Georgia Tech.”

McCoy is Georgia Tech’s third commitment for next year, following Collins Hill tailback Charles Perkins and Thomasville defensive back Fred Holton. All three are from Georgia. Johnson hinted to the AJC that Georgia Tech’s recruiting class for next year may be entirely comprised of in-state prospects.

“Georgia Tech may have a little bit more a challenge than other schools recruiting players because of academics,” Showfety said. “But I think they have made it very clear that they plan to get a lot of guys from this state, and be very successful at doing it.”

CPJ has this program moving forward and on the road where it needs to go to rise to a serious ACC title contender every year. This is shaping up to be a very strong class. His ties to the state from his days at Georgia Southern are certainly reaping dividends on the recruiting trail. Now before all of the trash talking begins, remember, let the kids enjoy their college selection without any personal attacks. CPJ has already shown that this team will only get better, and is ready to go head to head in the state for good football players. UGA will always get their kids, but now, GT will as well.

You and your family should be very proud. You’ve picked a great school and a great coach.

Can’t wait to see you on the field.

Oh, and pay no attention to the moronic dawg fans who will be along here shortly. They’re still bitter over Tech’s victory in their house, it’s made them a little mean spirited.

Go back and find those articles that said Tech couldn’t ever do this. With the Bulldogs whispering in the ear of the reporter and showing calculus books to the recruit like education was a sin. These colleges use to tell the public they were for the whole well being of the recruit but follow up what happens to the average player at Georgia and the one that went to Tech. Check out Calvin Johnson and what he got out of Tech even though he was a great football player. There may be two or three or more Obama’s in the works at Tech. If Chicago can spit them out why can’t a great city like Atlanta? The ACC conference as a whole gets it, but none better than our home town school Tech. And what fun for the parents who can not only make it to the games every Saturday but attend the practices too, with other parents that are neighbors. Those friendships will be there long after graduation. Good choice for all.

On the other hand, congratulations Mr. McCoy, we are very happy to have you here and we can’t wait to have you out on the Flats. CPJ, Giff Smith, and the rest of the staff have already done a great job with three great recruits. Keep ‘em coming.

Very classy, Ford. And, it is hilarious that UGA did not pursue this kid. I imagine that LSU, Alabama and Notre Dame are just not able to get the kids UGA does. Grow some common sense, pal. There could be plenty of reasons UGA did not offer, at least one of them could be McCoy saying that if he chose to stay in state he would choose Tech b/c of its academics. Not as a slight to UGA, but he wants to major in computer science and GT is stronger than UGA in that particular area.

Yeah, UGA didn’t seriously pursue him, that must mean he is not an “elite” prospect, so go tell that to LSU, Miami, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Alabama, Michigan State, Minnesota, North Carolina, N.C. State, Notre Dame, Oregon, Penn State, Purdue, South Carolina, Stanford, Tennessee, Wisconsin, UCF, East Carolina, Auburn, Cal, Duke, and Florida State…all who did.

Hmm I wonder who’s on the wrong side of this argument.

But can PJ recruit players on the other side of the ball? Can he get them to buy into the triple option? only time will tell. Once again, congrats Denzel, PJ, and Tech.

As a major Dawg fan, I still say great decision by the young man, and very impressed by the way Coach Johnson recruits. Seems like the real deal – remember, he was coming to Georgia with Erk, with the understanding it was his team when Erk retired in 5 years. Dooley said last year he still felt he would be a great winner playing in the SEC. Congrats! And lets keep it civil – it can still be a war and civil at the same time in the South.

P.S. Reason Dawgs didn’t offer McCoy – 5.8 recruit, which is outstanding, but DT’s at UGA tend to be premium offers, because of Gardner’s recruiting and our history of NFL DT’s. Gardner has a couple of bigger fish he is trying to land, but this young man is a 4 star recruit = to Tech’s highest rated recruit this year (also a DT by the way).

Hey wreck. Correction: Tech beat UGA WITH guys like McCoy. Dwire, Nesbitt, Johnson, Thomas were all ranked about the same coming out of high school. This (committing McCoy) is evidence that PJ can get these players (at least on defense) but how many will he get on a yearly basis? GT’s win over UGA will give Tech a little bit of help in recruiting quality in state guys like this but nobody knows yet whether he can reel em in larger numbers like UGA does. Also, one highly touted recruit isn’t necessarily evidence that PJ will bring more. Again, congrats.

tech student you are an emabarassment to the school.

anybody who would vote for a ticket with sarah ‘dumb as a rock’ palin on the ticket has some screws lose.

before you go bashing obama you need to look at W. he took a govt that had a surplus and was paying down the debt and pushed a national debt from 5 trillion to almost 13 trillion.

we were fighting two wars and for the first time in our history we didnt increase taxes to pay for the war.

if we had payed for next years budget with 3 of the 8 trillion bucks bush wasted we would be just fine. i am sure you would still find something to bitch about.

And btw… 70% of the country is behind obama. that puts you in with the group of far right religious fanatics and the uga fans that cant read nor right as far as supporting the republican party.

you know… the party who showed their own budget plan last week. 17 empty pages. the party of NO plan and NO answers.

are you sure you really ARE old enough to vote?
my guess is your still in high school.

the republicans have controlled this country for almost 32 of the last 40 years and you put the blame on obama. that is rich dude.

over those 40 years the worker pay to ceo pay ratio has gone from 1/30 to 1/300. that trickle down really works eh? just like the money that W gave the banks before he left office is trickling down now. yeah right.

i guess they can fool you once and they can fool you again and again and again and again.

Wreck7, the article above says Georgia had contacted him, but still had not offered. They contact dozens of recruits they never offer. Georgia just has a couple they regard slightly higher at this point. And obviously you don’t know much about program based on your comments to SugarHill Dawg. CPJ won last year loaded with talent that Chan Gailey had brought in, especially the class with Nesbitt and Dwyer – in reality, probably better than UGA’s class that year (UGA ranked 1 slot higher nationally, but a couple of those didn’t pan out). But also, look at the Seniors who just graduated – Gailey left alot of talent at Ga Tech.

For those asking if CPJ can do it on offense, spend a few bucks to get access to rivals.com and take a look at Charles Perkins’ videos. That kid is amazing. I didn’t see a single run where he didn’t get 2 yards after the initial hit, but probably averaged 6 or 7 YAC. He’s going to be a perfect B-back. Remember that this offense is kind of like Spurrier’s offense at UF. We don’t need 5-stars we need system guys that will turn into draft picks.

When you ru a gimmicky offense players don’t get the correct training to help them in the pros. Please keep this to sports why dont uga and tech fans want both teams to be good so we put this rivalry back on the map. I am a tech fan and for one loved the hire of johnson and think the richt johnson head to head will be awesome for years to come. There is enough talent in this state for both schools to have great recruiting classes.

BLACKPRIX just so you know if people like you are stupid enough to think Bush caused people to buy houses and cars they could not afford you might not want to open your mouth and let people know you are that stupid. This mess is caused by government and Thank obamas ACORN group for putting these worthless people in houses they cant afford.

Hard to get complete idiots to understand this is a sports article and is for sports comments. There are political blogs for idiots to express their stupidity. Why don’t you political jerks go there where someone might appreciate your ignorance? You can whine and wallow with the other losers.

Oh 70’s mutt, you’re the epitome of your breed. Remember the Donnan and Goof years? Just get ready. GT only needed three 4* recruits on offense to put 45 on you in your stadium with all your great recruiting classes reaching their pinnacle. You guys get a little carried away with these recruiting services.

That’s funny, you do out recruit UF and lose to them 49-10. It’s called coaching and your’s is not doing so well with his hot shot recruits.

CPJ is about to blow some minds with his offense this year. Just hide and watch.

Tech, along with Vandy and Wake are showing you don’t need 5.9-6.1 recruits to win. So many of those guys are 3 or 4 year guys. 5.6-5.8 guys who are many times redshirted turn into great, mature players also. An extra year in the weight room is not a bad thing at this level.

Same with basketball – recruiting is not Tech’s problem, its all the 1 year and out guys. The teams like Xavier who bring players in and keep them for 4 or 5 years seem to be doing very well. The 1 year and gone guys destroy chemistry so often on a team. Dennis Felton with Georgia had finally reached that conclusion, but we canned him before he could implement it. That being said, Hewitt is not a great coach, but seems like a great guy, and Felton was so disciplined cleaning up Harrick’s mess, he couldn’t keep enough players on campus.

Before we loose our minds he is only a three star athlete with 5.0 speed in the 40. Lets go for the really big boys. He is good but not great.

Diamond Dawg, or should i say pubic zirconian dawg?! Do you HONESTLY think for a second that the little puppies would ‘overlook’ a Tech team?! If you do, then you’ve NEVER played the game! I assure you, those little hiney biters wanted to win that game as bad as any other game! Didn’t one of your players say that he couldn’t go out that way and decided to stay another season? He’s going to be REALLY frustrated when he goes out with TWO losses to that ‘mediocre’ team from the flats! Our kid made a wise decision…..you’re made a bad one! GO TECH!!!!

No thanks GT. After the great Jimmy Carter we don’t need any more GT grads running for president.

You are right Steve, Ga gave Felton a mess, that he tried to clean up, but they didn’t tell him they don’t care about going to class or rap sheets, just wins. Felton deserved better, Ga deserves Harrick.

Please don’t compare Bobby Dodd or Paul Bryant with Vince “Mr. Mediocre who landed Hershel” Dooley. I think the State of Georgia owes an official apology to the rest of the free world for Jimmy Carter.

2 or 3 more Obamas are far better than 2 or 3 more Bush’s – god knows we are dealing with enough baggage from the idiot regime of the last 8 years
