Georgia Tech and UGA lining up to battle over state’s top prospects

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson and UGA’s Mark Richt say they expect to battle it out more this year over the state’s top prospects.

Westlake linebacker Michael Taylor is the latest homegrown talent to be recruited by the archrivals. Georgia Tech offered Taylor on Thursday; UGA extended the scholarship papers on his 17th birthday in February.

“It means a lot to get offered by both Georgia and Georgia Tech,” Taylor said. “Both are great schools. Georgia is one of the top teams in the SEC, while Georgia Tech is one of the best in the ACC. It doesn’t seem to happen a lot, when [an in-state] player gets offered by both of them.”

It’s still early in recruiting for the 2010 prospects, but at least a dozen of the state’s top names have dual offers from the rivals. Some of the headliners are M.L. King tailback Mack Brown, Booker T. Washington wide receiver Antonio Goodwin, Gainesville wide receiver Tai-ler Jones, North Gwinnett offensive lineman JaWuan James, Douglass defensive lineman Garrison Smith, South Paulding cornerback Ryan Ayers, Newnan safety Alec Ogletree, Warner Robins defensive tackle Jeffrey Whitaker and Buford lineman Kolton Houston.

“It’s special to have offers from both because it’s one of the greatest rivalries in college football,” Garrison Smith said. “It is just an honor to have the opportunity to play for both of those great programs. It’s not the type of thing that happens every day.”

Smith has special insight into UGA and Georgia Tech. He has yet to announce his college decision, but appears to be favoring Georgia among his 24 offers. His older brother, Greg Smith, played for Georgia Tech.

Getting an offer from Georgia Tech and UGA is very important for the in-state recruits. It cements the player’s status as being one of the nation’s top college prospects. You can expect a flood of scholarship offers from out-of-state schools to follow. Just look at the elite names above.

The state of Georgia produces around 200 Div. I prospects every year, and only a tiny percentage are offered by either UGA or Georgia Tech. Even a smaller number of recruits are heavily pursued by both. There are exceptions to the rule, but you have to be good. Very good.

“It feels like a privilege,” JaWuan James said. “Georgia Tech is great, while Georgia is a powerhouse. If you decide to stay around home to play college football, you can’t go wrong with either of them.”

Back to Michael Taylor: The 6-foot-1, 200-pound linebacker also has early offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State and North Carolina State, and many other schools are interested. He was thrilled to get the news from Georgia Tech.

“They have great academics, and if I was to go there, I could see myself playing very soon,” he said. “It would also be a chance to stay close to home and play in front of my family in Atlanta.”

What about Georgia? “If I had to sign today, then it would be Georgia. The Bulldogs are my No. 1 choice right now. I’m just waiting until the right time to commit to a school because this is one of the biggest decisions in the last 17 years of my life.”

I know it’s the paper’s job to stir the pot BUT UGA goes for 4 and 5 star recruits and Tech could never hope to land those kinda guys. Tech needs to be able to convince players that it’s cool to play on Thursday nights and lower their standards and settle for the ACC and that is a hard sale.

Lane Kiffin is a joke. UT supporters join your cousin/girlfriends on a UT blog.

UGA will get the recruits that it needs. UGA is a great institution that will have a sold out 92,000 in the stands each week, will be in the top 10 every year and will be on TV every week.

Tech is a great place to end up too. They have 47,000 every week and they sometimes get on tv on ESPN 3.

    Things to consider;
    1. Tech: normally plays at noon in front of 35000 or so on REGIONAL TV, if at all.
UGA: prime time, National TV, 96,000 fans
    2. Tech: ACC is rated 4th or 5 th conf.
UGA: SEC Number 1 by most fans and writers.
    3. Tech: 10 to 1 male to female ratio
    UGA: 1 to 1 ratio
    4. Tech; Beating UGA one time consumes them 24/7
UGA: winning 7 of last 8 No big deal. One of our usual 10 or 11 wins
    5. TECH: runs ads in paper begging any and all to attend games with free pizza offers etc.
UGA: returned thousands of request for season tickets
6; Tech; Game day experience, tailgating hoping you don’t get robbed or raped.
UGA: Game day experience, one of the beat venues and experiences in the country.
    7. Make sure you visit Reggie Ball’s retired jersey on display when you visit Athens.

Then how did Tech get Jonathan Dwyer over Georgia? He was offered by both schools and Richt expressed in the press conference leading up to the game how much they wanted Dwyer and then he proceeded to burn UGAY for 150 yards. In hindsight I’d say that’s a big win for Tech considering he’s likely to go for 200 on UGA’s D this year.

I think it’s hilarious that this article lists 12 names that UGA and GT are head to head for and some UGA fans still say “we don’t recruit head to head because we get better players than they do.” That sounds about like what FSU was saying about 6 years ago, just as they started to slip. Sometimes I wonder if they even ask you if you want it before they hand you the “we’re better and always will be” Kool-Aid.

Lance, you need to give up on that last seven years thing. College football is about the last three years and what your rival is doing, ask Tommy Bowden and Tommy Tuberville. If UGA has another less than hoped for season and loses to GT, Richt will be on the hotseat. I respect his faith, but that ain’t gonna save him if he doesn’t live up to those lofty expectations y’all have in Athens. I’m not saying Richt isn’t a good coach, I think he is.

UGAY best take care of its state considering they let the nation’s best Safety (Eric Berry if you’re too sped to figure that out) choose Tennessee over UGA. Kiffin has already proven he can recruit with the best. 3 months and he signed the no. 8 class for scout.com and top-15 everywhere else. Imagine who he’ll get with a whole year to recruit. BTW they already scored the top prospect from Tennessee this year so you don’t have to worry about that and he chose UT over UGAY and Bama.

    JB, more things to consider:

    1. There are currently over 10,000 division 1 scholarship football players.
    2. There are 1,760 roster positions available in the NFL.
    3. With the average career in the NFL lasting 7.5 years, there are roughly 235 new jobs in the NFL every year. That means your odds are about 1% to make it into the NFL.
    4. Heres the big one. Average starting salary for a GT grad is about $59,000, with 10-year salary at $152,000.

That’s a good fall-back plan if rivals overrated you as a 5-star when you should have been a 4-star or a 3-star. Or, you could give up about 120 points in front of nearly 300,000 collective fans in only 3 halves of football.

Alabama fans talking garbage about Richt is funny. Did you know his record against the Tide is 3-1. He’s also the first coach to win in tuscaloosa. Not once by the way but twice. He’s also beaten Nick Saban pretty good over the years. I’m not worried about Bama. Saban will underachiev with great talent and then move onto another level. The tide will probably be back on probation or even the death penalty when it’s al through. Enjoy it!

Actually JB both UGA and Tech usually finish in the top 4 of their respective conferences….plus over the last five years Tech and UGA have the same number of conference title games under their belts (granted, UGA won their game). One last thing, then it’s time for bed…JB, I gotta disagree with you about Gailey and Ball. Gailey was a QB killer. Ball never progressed under Gailey. That’s not Reggie’s fault. He was a hard worker on the field and in the weight room (not so much in film though). I think with the proper guidance and even fatherly attitude and support, Ball could have been an all-American under CPJ. In college football, you have to have killer instinct because teams score 20 points in a quarter pretty regularly. That was not Gailey at all. It is CPJ. That dude wants and expects to score on every play.

And yes, none of us are afraid of UT. That recruiting crap will bite Kiffin in the butt. Of course, I’m guessing he’s not planning on being there for year four. He wants back in the NFL.

Tennessee ripped the dawgies (who were favored by 2 TD’s I must add) a new a*ssh*ole to the tune of 35-14. UGAY is in for a rude awakening period because Stafford and Knowshon are gone. Yeah Joe Cox looks great this spring but thats against that girl scout troop you UGAY fans call a defense. Yes, we offered the Hill kid, but it kind of like going to a dance. You may talk to a great deal of takers, but in the end we got the elite. In terms of recruiting, we will dominate in recruiting again. Tech talks trash, but they know that we get the pick of the litter and they get the runts.

Have you ever been around Tech/Ga State and the Varsity…You might be thinking of a different area in Atlanta…or at least I hope so. Sheesh…let’s hope your wife or girlfirend never wants to eat downtown…you’ll be like “No honey..the thugs and holligans will rape us and steal our money”….How out of touch are you man? Atlanta’s a great town and I can promise you won’t get raped if you ever venture down there. It’s too bad you’re too scared to get down there to see your Dawgs this year. They and their fans will be there while you are hiding in your room. Get some culture in you…you need it. There’s a lot of great resturants and things to do downtown. Or you can just continue to hang out at your local chili’s in east bumblef*ck if that suits you. Loser.

GTMan – did you suffer a head injury recently? tech dominated the 90’s? Seriously? You do realize that after 1990, tech didn’t win in the series again until 1998? Then, your precious three game winning streak (not to mention the infamous Jasper Sanks non-fumble costing Georgia the ‘98 game)came within a hair of being vacated by the NCAA for using ineligible players. This is before losing another seven in a row. Does any of this ring any bells for you?

Unfortunately, to add fuel to this fire next year, UGA will only sign 15-18 in the 2010 class due to limited available scholarship numbers. Most schools average around 25 a year(or 50 if your Ole Miss). I’m not sure what GT’s numbers look like next year. That will leave more GA kids than normal in most years available to sign with GT. At the moment UGA has offered 16 GA kids out of 68 total offers. GT has offered 23 GA kids out of 31 total. Obviously, those numbers will increase. But, it’s also obvious that UGA has more of a national draw than GT does. So, in 2010, GT could conceivably sign more GA kids than UGA does. The question though is which kids will those be. UGA typically wins the war in signing the majority of the top 25 out of 50 players in the state year in an year out while GT takes the majority of the bottom 25 out of 50. The exception to that rule of late came in 2007. GT did get it’s fair share of quality talent in the state that year. In any given year, GT & UGA both HEAVILY(the key word) recruit about 10 to 15 of the same players in the state. Historically, UGA wins that battle the majority of the time. With Johnson at the helm, I suspect that there will be recruiting wars for years to come with increasingly more GA kids. And, I think UGA will begin to offer more and more kids nationally as the program succeeds. This will benefit both schools because of the depth in state. The state of Georgia may not have the depth of talent as states like Florida, Texas, California or Oklahoma. But, it’s pretty darn close.

They are NOT the leader of any of them right now!

Several of them have already crossed Tech off of their list of consideration.

All of them still have UGA on their list of consideration.

Many of them have UGA leading.

UGA has a chance of landing 9-10 of those players.

I know Tech being mentioned in the same breath with Georgia is tearing the boys up in Athens. Georgia have at least owned the PR in this state too long and with the loss at Athens in CPJ’s first year with “subpar” players learning a new system the crack is beginning to show. I really think the Dawgs are losing their grip on every front. Last years train ride from number one to being beat at home by Tech has got to be getting to even the R30 thick headed ones. The SEC is becoming less and less an opportunity for them, Alabama, LSU and even Mississippi not to mention Florida and yes Tennessee are all better or will be. There is something about the hype that goes on over there and the reality that don’t match up. I am not saying this because I am a Tech fan, it is not fun beating a mediocre team, and Georgia did it with us for years and never felt the rivalry like we did. Without hating Georgia college football is not half as fun. Unlike Georgia we haven’t got any other rivals to really speak of. Everybody in the ACC has kind of gone to dust too. We even beat FSU now and Bobby is getting so old he is pitiful. Georgia always has Auburn, Florida, and Tennessee and they don’t like Alabama much now days either. Nope when beating Georgia becomes second page news the falls in the state of Georgia won’t ever be the same.

GT21 – this the wikipedia entry for Reggie Ball in regards to his time with the Lions:

At the NFL Combine Ball tried out as a wide receiver, attempting to follow former college quarterbacks Antwaan Randle El and Reggie McNeal. He ran a 4.8 second 40-yard dash,[11] and had somewhat inconsistent pass coverage.[12] Ball was not selected during the 2007 NFL Draft, but was signed by the Detroit Lions, auditioning for a role as a wide receiver/kick returner. [13] He did not make the team.[14]

On December 5, he was re-signed to the practice squad when defensive back LaMarcus Hicks was placed on injured reserve and wide receiver Brandon Middleton was promoted to the active roster.[citation needed] On July 27, 2008 he was placed on injured reserve.[citation needed]

Ball was released by the Lions of March 18, 2009.

I’m guessing that since there’s not a big call for NFL WRs who run 4.8s, he’s not pulling in a lot of professional football cash.

Sad, but funny b/c it is exactly what I would expect from a delusional uga hick. uga always gets better talent, but there is a reason why everyone says that they have the astounding ability to do less with more. Quite an accomplishment that is, being able to consistently underachieve….Great job guys!

And to all the mutts boasting how “GT wins one game, and talks trash” I remember a certain group of inbred hicks claiming superiority over UF after their embarrassing “endzone” dance last year. As a side note, I would be completely ashamed of my team if we did something like that, holy crap. But, back to my original point, all of you delusional hicks talked trash to UF all year, until UF rubbed your noses in it this past year (i still giggle when I think about those time outs in the final minutes). Ok, a couple of points for Tech fans:

    1. Before we get to football, the first thing that needs to be said to understand the psychology of Tech fans is that ugly girls go to Tech so they can be considered hot. Ok, now let’s move on to the gridiron.
    2. “Old-fashioned Boredom” would probably be a better term for the so-called rivalry. Yes, Tech won last year, but the truth is, I rarely worry about Tech. Florida? Yes, and I’ll admit that they dominate us right now. I’d exchange beating Florida for losing to Tech, and that’s the sad reality for Tech fans: you’re not important. You’re an afterthought.
    3. Why? We beat Tech about three/fourths of the time . . . and that’s not just over the last decade . . . or the last two decades . . . but the last three decades. That’s right – over the past thirty football seasons, going back to 1979, UGA’s winning percentage is 73% over Tech. I mean, wow. I think that’s considered dominance. Last year was an anomaly. If it happens again, I might actually get concerned. Until then, let me get back to focusing on the important things, like beating Florida.
    4. Three Tech grads report to me.

    Give me a break

Since I logged into this site about 30 minutes ago, catching up on all the previous posts, I have not seen one cogent, intelligent, or meaningful post that actually concerns football…whether it be Tech or Georgia or Tennessee. JB, for you to accuse Tech posters of being obsessed with Georgia, and posting nothing but insults is PURE HYPOCRISY. That is all you have done in any of the posts I have read. Dawgtime is no better. So what if Georgia has a bunch of highly-rated recruits? How about talking about the fruits of recruiting? How even the highest rated ones don’t always produce the best result, and the lowest rated ones sometimes do. So what if Georgia has one of the biggest stadiums in the south? Tell the Duke basketball team that stadium size means anything. So what if one team has a long streak of wins against another team? All streaks end sooner or later, and in many cases, they totally reverse. It’s not the past that matters. It’s what the future holds. Come on guys, talk about real stuff here, and not just self-absorbed fanatacism. It’s not pretty, and it’s not healthy. GET A LIFE!!!

I just want to congratulate the High Schools in the State of Georgia. For years we heard that Tech couldn’t win because it couldn’t sign the same players that Georgia could because of how smart you have to be to play sports at Tech. Well, magically and seemingly at the exact same time as Paul Johnson’s arrival, the kids in Georgia are smart enough to play at Tech. I mean you could conclude that the Tech nerds were just losers looking for excuses before, but I’d just assume that the Techsters were right in their analysis and its just that players in Georgia are now friggin’ genuises. Lucky for you Techies.

BTW: When we go on another beat down win streak, you can go back to the same old whining. We don’t mind. Its expected.

yes, i can and will readily admit that ugay will for the most part cherry pick the 4 and 5 star players that they want from the state. in the past Chan had a tough time competing with his crew of 2 and 3 stars (though you have to admit several of those games were VERY close) the difference now is that Coach Johnson is a better coach and has a better staff than CMR, Martinez and crew. CPJ>CMR it’s a simple equation that even you dumb ugay fans can probably understand. CPJ and his system will beat you 2 out of 3 times with lesser talent.

I went to one game at Georgia Tech several years ago and the handicap access at the stadium was atrocious. I saw a girl in a wheel chair having to be picked up to help her get through crowd. Tech should really do something about that. Don’t they teach architectrual engineering over there? If so, you may want to study IDEA Law as well. Maybe hire a UGA law student to help you out!

Gant they have Civil Engineering over there too and most of those guys wind up over at DOT. Now seeing how screwed up Atlanta traffic is, does that shed some light on that stadium thing. Not to mention they also were the culprits in those defective tiles on the space shuttle. There’s a lot of talk minus walk that comes out of that North Avenue Trade Schoo.

Its funny to me that all the GT fans think UGA is “losing their grip on every front”. Let me remind you that GA still won 10 games last year and has averaged 10+ wins the last seven years and a top ten ranking. GT obviously dosn’t come close to those figures and never will – the support isn’t there. By the way, the more you face the triple option the easier it is to stop and recruits will be harder and harder to come by; luckily you still had Gaileys recruits last year, which for GT were pretty solid players.

Georgia is undoubtedly one of the best programs in the SEC. Fla is a notch (or TWO) above all teams in the SEC, followed by UGA, BAMA, LSU on the second tier and UT, AUBURN, SC, OLE MISS third tier teams.

I’m tired of hearing all this BS about the rings, here is the real story:
As part of its CFA bowl package, Tech got a ring. They had some say into what design was on the ring, and PART of that design was the score 45-42. Bottom line: Tech got rings from the CFA bowl, not for beating UGA. AJC took this story and ran with it, implying the latter.
Saint Richt can have all the 5 star recruits he wants, but UGA never lives up to the hype.

    Tech Student

    April 3rd, 2009
    1:17 pm

Most all of you people sound like idiots.

UGA is the better football factory and it will always be that way due to the nature of the two schools, however, Tech is getting better and seems (so far) like it is on the way up. Tech’s academics (choices of majors, toughness), and UGA’s program success, environment, and conference, will get UGA more of the 4-5 star recruits. Tech will still get mostly 3-star recruits and a few 4-star and possibly one or two 5-stars in a good year.

UGA will usually win the recruiting battles, as they will and already have won many of these mentioned (I thought this article was retarded), but I think that with RBs and dual-threat QBs, the battle will go to GT more often, and with WRs and nfl-QBs, the battle will go to UGA. The rest of the players will more often go to UGA for the reasons stated above (history, success, SEC).

    That is how it is.

So, when Tech wins, it is a bigger deal because of the talent gap. And how can you blame Tech fans for “bragging too much”? It is a rivalry game, no matter how little UGA fans say they think it matters. UGA fans could not stop bragging about “this game doesn’t matter” over the past 7 years (and yes, that counts as bragging). That is what a rivalry game is about – bragging rights for the next 365 days.

    To sum this up:

GT academics >(but more narrow scope than) UGA academics, which btw, > UT
    SEC football > ACC football
UGA football (usually) > GT football
    # of UGA 4 and 5-stars > # of GT 4 and 5-stars
    59 > 39 (series record, UGA leading)

    but,
    4 NCs > 2 NCs
streak of 8 (long ago) > streak of 7
45 > 42, so we are allowed to brag

……how so many GA fans laud the dogs’ 7-game winning streak as if all 7 were like the 1st one, 51-7 (what time is it? 6:09, yeah 51 ‘to’ 7, good one). And how they “forget” that 3 of the 4 games prior to 2008 very easily could’ve gone in Tech’s favor. That’s with Reggie Ball and Chan Gailey!

Then came 2008 with PJ and his high-school offense, and Tech wins!

Now, if anyone on here that thinks PJ will EVER lose 7 in-a-row to the SAME team better stop what he/she is doing now, and get mega-rich selling what it is they are smoking. In fact, by looking at PJ’s track record as a coach, HC or OC, I’d say ANY of Tech’s COMMON opponents should get use to losing to PJ’s teams more than beating them.

What was the temp. in Athens 11/28/2008?? High of 45, low of 42. 45-42, ha,ha,ha. Get it? Now, how’s that for clever? What will Jacket fans come up with after their 2009 victory I wonder ……

You ugay fans are are morons. Is that all you worry about is how many stars a kid has or what magazine claims you to fame with a high recruiting ranking? Half of those kids are a bust? I remember when we signed donnie davis who was the #1 qb in the nation during the bill lewis days. That kid sucked! There have been plenty of busts at uga as well, and you guys have a top 5 class every year and i don’t see many top 5 finishes for you. 1 that i can find in the last 28 years in the final ap poll! It’s all about coaching leghumpers and CPJ will coach us up just fine, we don’t care how many stars they have, half your players don’t even end qualified and end of at juco or in clarke county jail! Those are FACTS! How many tech players do you see sign with us and then go juco??? Yeah, thats what i thought! At ugay, its every single year. The reason? You recruit alot of dumb kids who can’t qualify with their sat scores. Do you see us having issues with signing a kid then he drops of the face of the earth because he didn’t score well enough on his sat??? UGAY, ITS THE SAME THING YEAR AFTER YEAR.

We have a good staff and a great coach, cpj gets in these kids faces and if you watch the games, you know what i mean. CMR has one expression and demeanor all game, CPJ is intense from play to play and I LOVE IT! We need that, and your days of dominance are over. Get used to that 2nd place finish in this state, there will be plenty more of that to come!! Some of you ugay posters have your head in the gutter. Just know that you will be the underdog this year and chasing us in the polls all year, it must be tough to be a butt sniffer these days! We have 19 starters back to your 12, our offense will be loaded and will have a much improved running game and the passing game will be adding alot of shotgun and formations that are new. Why should we fear ugay this season? Cause you butt sniffers say we should?? Man, we are going to paste you clowns all over north avenue and on national tv! I welcome your arrival to the flats next thanksgiving, but pray with that terible defense you have, that we show some mercy!!! CPJ WILL BECOME YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE BEFORE HE IS THROUGH.

You really have people talking on here, it is wonderful.
If any 2 schools could do it I would say GT and UGA, with their current coaching staffs, could lock down the state of Georgia.
Between GT and UGA you can get:
    1) ACC or SEC (in Alabama in state recruits only have the SEC)
    2) Bigger school in small town or smaller school in big town
    3) Great engineering and business or great journalism and business (if academics is your thing)
    4) Both schools are BCS conference
    5) Both schools have recently had a player drafted in the top 5 of the NFL draft (assuming Stafford goes in the top 5)
    6) Both have great football traditions
    7) Both have high character and proven winning coaches
    8) Both are on national TV multiple times per year

Even with all that, coaches at AL, AU, UT, USCe, Clem, FSU, UF, Miami, are going to come in and make it difficult for GT and UGA to lock down the state.

Paul Johnson was a brilliant hire for Tech because he gets more out of his talent than just about anybody. At Navy he was 10-2….NAVY of all places, 3 seasons after they went 1-11. Then there’s last year…he took a team picked to finish near the bottom of the ACC into Athens and beat Georgia without a single senior starter on offense.

Its funny Georgia fans claim that they are competing with the likes of UF, Alabama, and USC for recruits when in all honesty UGA is not even on par with those programs. USC has more national titles in the past 6 years than Georgia has in its entire history as a football program. Alabama, lets just say Georgia you got raped by them this year and at your rate it will be another 500 years before you can catch them in national titles. If you really want to compete with UF you should try beating them more than 3 out of the past 20 years. Its funny that Georgia fans believe they are relevant on the national scene when honestly by the time they play Tech every year they are already out of the National picture cause they can’t beat there biggest rivals.
For those who point out that Tech only won by 3 this year who cares. Its still a W and counts just as much as if they blew Georgia out. I will take a win by 3 over a loss by 3 any day of the week. oh and incase the Georgia fans forgot UGA started the season as the number 1 team in the nation and oh thats right barely finished in the top 10 in the nation because they lost three games including to Tech. That top ten ranking should be bs as well considering there are teams with 1 and 2 losses still behind Georgia in the national rankings. Georgia fans when you actually can claim you compete for the national championship every year like Florida, Alabama, and USC then maybe people will consider you relevant.

    wow

Kurt thats probably the most intelligent post I have seen on here yet. Its funny how stupid both sides get in this argument. If people want to compare programs compare who wins on the field. “Elite running backs will favor GT.”

Disagree. Elite running backs will not go to a school where they will be viewed as a “system” back. Georgia Tech will rack up massive amounts of rushing yards under Paul Johnson. You will never hear me deny that. But it won’t be because they’ve got a Knowshon Moreno (played for UGA if I recall correctly) or a Chris Wells back there toting the rock. It will be because of the system. Elite running backs will choose to play for traditional offenses where they can showcase their skills, not be a cog in some archaic option scheme. If CPJ could get elite players he wouldn’t even run the triple option. This is why GT will always be very limited in what it can achieve and continue to terrorize its ignorant fan base. I can’t say that I won’t enjoy it.

    Huh?

This does seem to be a repeat story, but here’s what I don’t understand – a lot of GT fans spout off about how they get the “smart” athletes and UGA gets the dumb ones. If that’s the case, then why is Tech offering scholarships to so many of the same players as UGA? Either the athletes are getting smarter (Georgia’s public school’s performance doesn’t seem to reflect that), or many GT fans just lost their argument about recruiting smart athletes. You can’t have it both ways. Which is it?

Huh? They haven’t won the SEC in 10 years but incase you forgot they did compete for it this year and oh thats right whipped Georgia in Atlanta. Oh and as far as your national title comment they were in contention for the national title until they lost to Florida due to Tebow playing out of his mind. Where was Georgia during the SEC championship? Oh thats right they were sitting at home watching the game wondering what happened to the number 1 ranking they had at the beginning of the year. Oh and when is the last time Georgia won a national title? 1980 I believe so who are you to run your mouth cause thats right Alabama still has a national title more recently than Georgia. Go outside the state of Georgia and you get an almost unanimous result stating that Alabama is a more heralded program than UGA is and can probably ever hope to be. Georgia gets off thinks about how great it was with herschel walker but they forget that he played almost 30 years ago. When Georgia has a national title thats not almost 30 years old then you can talk. Until then take it just like Georgia did this year from Florida, Alabama, and Tech. Oh and I don’t hear you trying to say how Georgia is able to compete with Florida or USC. Please try and prove me wrong.

Please tell me how I need a reality check. When you can show me a reason that Georgia deserve the same prestige as the other great programs in this country I will gladly listen. Georgia fans feel like Georgia is a great program and is on par with the best in the country when in fact they can’t come close. When you rank the ten best programs in the nation georgia doesn’t even make the list, unless of course your in Georgia where everyone thinks they are the best team in the country every year.

Michael its funny that since you have nothing intelligent to say in support of georgia you turn to gay comments. Wow I wish I was 12 again and could come up with these great lines like you do.
Huh? Your response is laughable considering UGA hasn’t competed for a national title in 29 years to be exact. 29 years!!!! Oh no Alabama only competed this year which if you ask me is more relevant than 1980 but hey I guess for Georgia one good moment is better than 11 National titles. Your response on why you won’t argue Florida and USC is laughable because your trying to save face when honestly you have no argument. USC has more heisman winners in the past 10 years than georgia has in its history. Then again the Florida argument. They have more national titles in 3 years than georgia in its history. If you want to defend UGA please prove me wrong by showing how they are relevant. When was the last time they had a real chance of playing for the national title? Don’t talk about the recent trip to the Sugar Bowl when LSU won the national title since as Georgia fans forget they couldn’t win their own conference and therefore have no right to a national championship. Huh? If you want to criticize my facts thats fine but instead of being a little baby with no support for your argument about how great georgia is why don’t you use real facts and prove how great the little bulldogs who are always irrelevant are.

jason w. – he argues because that’s what techies are trained to do. Focus on one or two myths and hammer the point home with their fingers stuck in their ears, ala a two year old brat. Or better yet, they focus on the one or two games georgia lost, and summarily dismiss georgia as a bunch of wannabes because they lost to the best two teams in the SEC West and SEC East, respectively. Yeah, that about sums it up. Or the fact that Nathan is sexually frustrated seems like it has some merit.

Jason, they may have finished in the top 10 in 6 of the past 8 years but you have to look at the ranking system and how its set up. This year they were tenth and two teams had better records than them and beat better teams than them weren’t even in the top 10. The probably with the ranking is that the only reason Georgia finished in the top ten was there number 1 mythical ranking at the beginning of the year.

Wiley, how is focusing on the fact that Georgia has not been relevant to the national title in 29 years focus on one or two loses. The florida argument focuses on the past 20 years when georgia had 17 loses out of 20. Its funny how people think Georgia is relevant and a great team when they haven’t had a chance at a national title in 29 years. Hell Colorado has a national title since then.

If you want stats when is Georgia number 1 at the end of the year? NEVER! If Georgia wants respect win a National Championship or atleast have a shot at it at the end of the year. Georgia hasn’t had a legit shot since 1980 but wants national respect as a great program. If you want respect you have to have championships to back it up which georgia doesn’t. To be an elite program, such as USC and Florida, you have to win the big games which Georgia doesn’t. Cause Jason W. who was number 8 in the nation 3 years ago? Who cares cause they didn’t win but Florida won the national title. Who was number 7 2 years ago? Who cares LSU has the national championship? Hell who was number 5 last year? Who care Florida is national champion. I will take a national title or a shot at the national title every 10 years or every 5 years which USC and Florida look like they have the programs to do this now and I wouldn’t put it past Saban who use to own the SEC when he was at LSU. Georgia hasn’t won a championship so who cares about there top ten rankings. When mark richt gets a ring he will matter and Georgia can start to talk about being an elite program. Until then there just a good team that can’t win the big game.

Maddog, the reason they are competing for the same athletes is georgia is becoming a much better school that is actually harder to get into now than a large number of schools in the nation. The educational system and standards at georgia have risin drastically over the past 10 years thanks to Adams role at georgia as well as the HOPE scholarship keeping the brightest students in state for college instead of traveling out of state for an education. Both schools have there share of dumb athletes but overall academically they are both strong and good schools. You can’t really compare them due to the different types of degrees, engineering against mainly buisness, but Georgia has built up a much stronger academic reputation in the past 10-15 years.

Honestly I do not argue that Chief. The whole thing I have with Georgia is that tope tens don’t make you an elite program. Hell Florida State had 14 years in the top 5 and Bobby Bowden and FSU were not considered elite until they got a national championship.
Maddog, i responded earlier but the post didn’t come up. The reason UGA and Tech are competing for the same athletes is that academically UGA is not an easy school to get into. Over the past 10-15 years with the help of President Adams and the hope scholarship the academic requirements at UGA have increased as the states brightest have stayed in state to receive free tuition. Both schools are developing strong academic standards. You can’t compare tech and UGA academically because of the different degrees they provide. Buisness and Engineering are two very different fields but both schools are building strong reputations in there fields. That is why they both compete for the same athletes.

Alabama is an elite program based on the history of the program. its the same reason Notre Dame is able to get top recruits, the history of the program. Incase you forgot Huh? Alabama is only 1 national title behind Notre Dame for the most all time in college football. You want to be an elite program build a strong history and such as Alabama has. Alabama was down for a while but the thing is with Saban its only a matter of time until they reach the Bear Bryant standards again of consistently winning. The 6-6 year happened to be a coaches first year and if you forgot Georgia who was suppose to be amazing barely one on a last second miracle. If you want to knock alabama why did Georgia barely beat a bad team? The whole key is to be considered a great program you have to win championships. Bowden and FSU were not great until he got a national championship and would not be considered great if he hadn’t gotten it. The same goes with Mack Brown at texas. Wins are good but championships are what matters and what people remember. If finishing in the top 5 14 straight year, which georgia top 10’s in 6 of 8 years is not close to, wouldn’t make you great without a championship why is georgia great. Insult me all you want but the sad thing is we all know at the end of the day georgia is not an elite program and won’t be considered elite until there is a National Championship trophy in the case.

Go ahead and try to make a list of the top 20 all time programs and not include Georgia. Nathan may feel all pious that he can sit here and say Georgia isn’t elite because of National Titles. Look at win loss statistics over a long period of time and number of players sent to the NFL Or better yet, go look online at the poll that ESPN did earlier in the year. Georgia is in the top 15 of all time programs. Go learn something and stop just trying to rile up people with your inane babble.

Who has more players arrested than fsu?

Which conference between the ACC and SEC had more of its players represented in the pro bowl this year?
which program has a better bowl winning percentage between the two schools?
Lastly, Who has 4 national championships compared the other teams pathetic 1?
Your school has been around since before hoover was president and you could muster but 1? But your soooooo superior? All your 5 star recruits? What happened ugay? You had one coach {dooley} turned your program around, and he won 1 nc and football has been played for a century before you won your first and you got 1????

    2) Georgia fans hide behind LSU for excuses, Tech uses Florida’s record vs UGA in defense.

buddy, tip, Geogia Tech was also in ESPN’s top twenty of all time, finishing at number 19. Listen kids, if you want to spend your college life playing under the lights in the SEC and consistently finishing the year with two divisional losses, you can go to Georgia. Or you can come to Tech, where the education is as good as any public college in the nation, where players are not only hard workers on the field, but also volunteers making the inner city better for the homeless. You can go to Georgia and live for the football, or you can go to Georgia tech, where you can play football and make a difference in the community

i seem to see UGA fans saying that when 10-3 was a down season, the progam is top notch. Well, did UGA beat anyof the elite teams in the SEC. OK, they may have beaten a half decent LSU, but they lost to the two best teams, didn’t play Ole Miss, and struggled against Tennessee, south Carolina, Kentucky, Auburn, and Vandy. They failed to beat a bowl eligible nonconference team as well, unless you count Michigan sate, which was probably the weakest Big Ten team to ever play on New Years Day. When you start out as the number one team in the nation, you dont play like UGA did last year. and don’t use the injury excuse, because every other team in the country has to deal with injuries too.

Sugar Hill Dawg, seems GT didn’t need any 4-5 star recruits to come from behind and win in Athens last november. When something like that happens there are several factors to be considered. One team wants to win more than the other, One coach prepared his team(1-3 stars) better than the other coach, one coach may be the best coach, 1-2 star players may be equal or better than 4- 5 star players, BUT I say that GT was just better prepared. We will have to see what happens next Nov., but again, you can argue all day, but we won’t know who wins until after the game is played. After UGA’s Poor season(according to their fans), the biggest thing you have to crow about is extracting some measure of revenge by LSU taking GT to the woodshead for you.

In regards to Dwyer-King, I know Dwyer quite well, and it was smart of him to pick Tech. He got to immediately compete for a spot at Tech. Not that he wasn’t good enough to play at UGA, he wouldn’t have gotten a look until this year. Lastly, UGA will get better offensive recruits while Paul Johnson is Tech’s coach…The majority of offensive players with professional aspirations would be delusional to think that Tech’s offense give them a better chance to impress scouts. But fellow Georgia fans, do not be ignorant even if the counterpart is, it still doesn’t make it ok

Maddog, I haven’t seen an answer to your question, so here goes. Over the past three or four years there have been more GA highschools offering calculus and more students expected to take it. We don’t always get smart players (see Reggie Ball and a lot of the other guys under Gailey/O’Leary watches); though we do have our Daryl Richard, George Godsey, Dan Dyke types too. We get guys who are able to at least get their foot in the door. And, based on increased offerings in GA schools, there is beginning to be some competition. It really started in 2007. I think the basis of the question is good football player =? smart guy, and the answer is yes.

BUZZSAW – Please dont use another teams stats to talk about your lack of a football team. I dont really like overrated dawgs myself but Tech is not even close to being in their class.

I think it’s humorous that people are using “class” and UGA in the same sentence. I also think it’s humorous when people want to be a reality check and can’t spell “reality.” The only reason that it’s rare for a recruit to get a scholarship from both schools is that Tech’s admit process has more restrictions.

    techfan,

see that definition of class up there is in reference to the grouping/echelon a team might be considered among.

your humor was trying to incorrectly read him saying something in regards to being classy.

georgia is considered to be among the class of the upper echelon of ncaa d1 football teams. for the past decade, they have regularly competed to win the sec and nationally for the highest spots including bcs bowls. albeit we are below the very top of the echelon since we have not actually won a national championship.

georgia tech is not in this same class of football teams. ga tech is a very good team, but it cannot be said of them over the past decade that they have regularly competed to win the acc or nationally gotten into any bcs bowl games.

Oh, and before the Bulldog fans start…I know UGA shows they haven’t offered “yet”. That doesn’t mean that Denzel isn’t a quality young man or a quality player, so please, just this once, try to act like adults…

I saw Denzel McCoy play last year. He was the lone bright spot on an 0-10 Northview team.

The only thing I will agree with UG[sic]A fans is the fact UT is pathetic much like its shirtless coaches. I hope UT’s athletic department goes bankrupt with their celebrity coaches.

BUZZSAW…. point taken. Florida has owned UGA and UGA has owned GT. So where does that leave GT…. who are they owning?

Here is the truth for both sides:
    (1) UGA wishes they had another national championship to go along with the ONE they got in 1980, since that is their #1 goal.
    (2) GT wishes they could beat UGA more often, which is their #1 goal.
    (3) UGA hates the fact they lost to GT last year and thinks there is no greater embarrassment.
    (4) GT is so thankful that the streak didn’t continue and ended at 7 years,,,, that makes it extremely difficult to talk about a rivalry.
    (5) UGA wishes they weren’t completely owned by Florida.
    (6) GT wishes they could do the same.
    (7) UGA loves to brags about the # of players it puts in the NFL. God help them if they didn’t make it.
    (8) GT loves to brag about the education that their players are definitely going to need.
    (9) UGA fans are supposedly more redneck and less educated.
    (10) GT fans forget that they are talking about their neighbors and relatives.

UGA has 2 National Titles that are recognized: 1942 and 1980

So if your going to talk titles get your numbers straight!
Also, if TECH fans are going to count “shared” titles, then they should count UGA’s “shared” titles in: 1927, 1946, and 1968.
