Lane Kiffin has already publicly apologized to Florida, Urban Meyer and SEC. He told the AJC he "figured that was enough" (AP)
Lane Kiffin said he is through apologizing to Florida.
Kiffin issued a public apology for wrongly accusing the reigning BCS football champions and coach Urban Meyer of cheating while recruiting. Kiffin said that he felt like that was enough, and he didn’t plan to contact Meyer personally to say he was sorry.
“I already apologized to [Meyer] and anybody at the University of Florida that I may have offended, and I figured that was enough,” Kiffin told the AJC in an interview on Tuesday.
It has become one of college football biggest controversies. It started at a recruiting breakfast with Tennessee supporters on Feb. 5, the day after National Signing Day. Wide receiver prospect Nu’Keese Richardson switched at the last minute from Florida to Tennessee.
“I love the fact Urban had to cheat and still didn’t get [Richardson],” Kiffin told the crowd, when referring to the fact that Meyer called Richardson while he was on a recruiting trip to Tennessee — not a violation.
Kiffin was reprimanded by the SEC for accusing Florida of illegal recruiting tactics with Richardson, and Kiffin issued a statement of apology to Meyer.
“If you were in the setting, the way it came across that day was a lot different that the way it runs across the ticker,” Kiffin said. “It is what it is, and it’s over now. But I was … energizing the crowd. It was not as bad [as it was made out to be]. I didn’t mean any disrespect toward the University of Florida or Coach Meyer.”
Tennessee defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, Lane’s dad, told the Orlando Sentinel earlier this month that his son felt bad about the comment. ”He respects coaches. He wasn’t trying to come across as arrogant. He’s not arrogant. He respects Urban Meyer. He respects all coaches.”
On Tuesday, Kiffin confirmed his dad’s words. “I felt bad about the way it was getting out,” he said.
“Unless you’re there [at the breakfast], you can’t really understand the [atmosphere], the timing of my comments and the mood of what was going on. Like I said, it’s over with. If it offended anyone at Florida, I’m sorry.”
Update: Also on Tuesday, Kiffin tells the AJC that his response to Florida players posting his pictures in the Gators lockerrooom is “free advertising” [Click here to read it]

Kiffin’s getting a lot of flack.
But I’m thinking that two years from now, a lot of you are going to conveniently forget how you predicted he’d fail.
Tennessee’s going to be very impressive in 2010. He’s recruiting. He has solid coaches. He’s a good coach himself. And there’s the second year effect that Richt identified in Nick Saban’s Alabama team from last year.
Once Kiffin finds a QB, watch out.

I’ve been beaten enough already! Can you tell it’s a slow sports news time on the calendar? Urbie and the Gators and everyone else need to get over it. If UF needs bulletin board material to get jacked for the Tennessee game then they’ve got bigger problems. It very well could be an a** whoopin’ this year, but it won’t be ’cause anything Kiffin said. Go ahead and have your fun at CLK’s expense now, cause the Vols will be back – and soon.

It is amazing a journalist can say anything about anybody at any time, but if a coach who may know a little more about the situation says something out of line it is echoed around the world. Steve Spurrier makes a good living jabbing these “good old boy” coaches. I think Tennessee needed something up there beside an over ripe pumpkin that makes an easy target. We never heard Gailey say a disparaging word about anybody, just sat there collecting a paycheck about as emotional as a cucumber. Football ain’t about politics or manners; it is about winning and liking to win. I think Lane Kiffin brings something to the table and I’m not even a Tennessee fan.

Here’s the problem:
Kiffin apologized because the SEC commissioner put a gun this head and said “apologize.” Based on his subsequent public comments, and his failure to deliver a personal apology, Kiffin does not understand/believe that he did anything wrong. In his world, it’s okay to talk trash about another coach and team if it was only in front of his own fans and not the media. I’ve attended plenty of UGA fan pep talks by Coach Richt and his predecessors over the past 35 years, and not one of them ever accused another coach of cheating in front of a partisan UGA crowd. Not once. Kiffin just doesn’t get it.
I’m no Gator fan, but I’m afraid Coach Kiffin has made the 2009 UF-UT game “must-see” TV for the rest of the SEC. I predict a very long afternoon for the Volunteers.

wxwax is delusional. Other than his dad, who’s the good coach on that staff? Nobody. If he gets a QB, watch him $#%^ it up, is more like it. I am not going to say Kiffin is going to fail. What I am saying is that talking big (with a 5-15 record) before being anywhere near ready to back it up is juvenile and classless and I HOPE he falls flat on his face. By the way, Sarkesian (sp?) was the real OC on that USC team.

How come every time the Vol fans defend Kiffin they always have to bring that he has a good coaching staff behind him. I never here anybody talk about Meyer, Saban, and Richt’s staff. It’s like they know his track record sucks so they have to try and use someone elses name on the staff to make him look better. Maybe they should get one of the staff membes to head coach and let Kiffin be an assistant. In over his head.

He said he’s sorry, let’s move on. Did Spurrier have to say he was sorry for “Free Shoes University” or “Can’t spell Citrus without UT”? Uh, no. Were FSU and UT folks ticked? Sure.
Florida has UT logos up in the locker room…nice advertising. I’m sure McDonalds probably has the Burger King logo stuck up somewhere around the fries to get their people fired up too.
If Fla, Ala, USCe, or uga or anybody else plays one ounce harder because of something Kiffin said, then he’s already won the mindgames. He’s certainly taken the lead in that category in Gainesville.
Lest anyone forget, he believed CUM was cheating so much he turned him in to the SEC office…no wait a minute, he didn’t. It’s “free shoes” and “citrus” all over again, but this time the vitirol is going south instead of north. I can see why everyone’s so upset.

It will take Kiffin and UT two or three years to upgrade the talent. Once that is done, we will compete. Right now however, we’ve got to get recruits attention. Deal with it. He is planning his work and working his plan. We will see in a couple of years if it works. The last thing UT is worried about is the Florida game this year. Florida is on top right now so I’ll give the Gators their due. But its obvious that Georiga is not going to challenge them. Let’s see if UT can!

Or was it just a casual comment at a gathering to get the faithful energized? Or whas it like the South Carolina statements…I didn’t really say it like that? This guy is starting to sound like Casey Anthony. Also his “apology” was a slap in the face. Kiffin is very fortunate that he won’t have to actually take the field Sept 19th. Kiffin is the genius who let the clock run down to 1 second, called timeout and had Janikowski try a 76-yard field goal at the end of the half. Not go into the hurry up, not throw something to the sideline, not spike it and stop the clock, but run it down to 1 second, call in the kicker and try a 76-yarder against San Diego.
Kiffin will have the Orange faithful screaming for Fulmer’s return by week 3 of this season.

Let me first say I am a DIEHARD GATOR FAN. With that being said, I will give Kiffin credit for one thing, he is an excellent recruiter. Whether or not you think he is a dumbazz or not he does bring the players in. in a few years (read 2-3) he will have the talent to compete for SEC titles. His talent will surely surpass the pups (sorry couldnt help it). Whether you like the guy or not he is stockpiling top notch talent. Now whether the talented recruiting classes end up like Goff-Donnan-Richts top ten classes remain to be seen.

Everyone is falling for it. How many people would even recognize the new coaches at Miss St. or Auburn if they ran into them in pubic. Heck, how many people even know their names. Kiffin is all over PTI, ESPN, USA Today, the AJC, ect… Did any of you here what Jim Rome said while talking about the Bryce Brown signing? “Lane Kiffin hasn’t coached a game yet and already I care more about Tennessee football than I have in years…” He landed a top 10 recruiting class. Unheard of for a new coaching staff to come in and accomplish that. Next year he will bring in the #1 ranked class in the country. Top to bottom, the staff he put together should coach these guys up. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kiff gets his “signature” win next year, Beating one of the big three on his schedule. Can’t wait to see the message boards after that one. Keep on hating him. That keeps him right where he wants to be. In the news where recruits are hearing about TN football.

If Urban can save all 6 timeouts for the last 30 seconds of the UT game, he will do it. He will want Lame to have to look at that scoreboard. Kind of like when your puppy has an accident on the floor and you rub his nose in it, swat him with a rolled up newspaper and take him outside to teach him where to go. Have a feeling Lame may have his nose rubbed in his own poop.

if florida beats the vols its not much of a surprise, but its not going to be by 50 like all, yall think. remember last year they only got 30 (23 from offense that was set up by special teams and Brandon james Punt return) and they held florida to about 250 yards of offense YES thats right 250 yards. The vols might not beat the gators but it will be competitive with most of the defense back, and monte kifin coaching it. If tennessee can hold on to the ball theyll be in the game. Ut has a fair home schdule with it games, the 3 tough sec ones are Auburn uga, and south carolina. none of the three will be running away with much this season. Auburn was about like UT last year, uga is gonna learn some lessons this year, there glad fulmer is gone cause he dominated them in the 90’s thenthis decade didnt play so will against them some years but ended there undeafted season twice (2004&2006) South Carolina has always had the prospect of being good with a solid D and good skill players however with lack of QB they have strugled.

How does Kiffin lie? At least he doesn’t tell a recruit he’s a No. 1 target and then rescind a scholarship offer?(CUM anybody with Antonio Foster) So he told a South Carolina recruit to pump gas(JW: Are there any Pro Bowl South Carolina Players? Tennessee has Albert Haynesworth and Peyton Manning along with Jerod mayo- Defensive Rookie of the year) at least he wasn’t CUM and screamed hellfire and Brimstone(Greg Reid). Snybody remember him telling Jevean Snead a few years ago that he was the only Quarterback Florida had targeted, so Snead commits and then he goes and recruits Tebow. Of next year’s recruits, Mack Brown needs to ignore CUM completely because he is a proven liar to recruits. At least Kiffin doesn’t offer scholarships he doesn’t have.
