Mark Richt gets first commitment for Georgia’s 2010 football recruiting class

Who is No. 1 for Georgia's 2010 recruiting class? It's Dalton DE Jalen Fields, who hinted to the AJC that he intended to commit to the Bulldogs.

Georgia finally got its first commitment for 2010 when Dalton defensive end Jalen Fields committed to the Bulldogs during UGA’s Junior Day on Saturday.

“I told [Mark Richt] and he was hugging me and my family,” Fields told the AJC. “Georgia is the place I want to be. I believe in [Richt] and Georgia. Coach Richt has already done so many great things at Georgia. I’m a hometown guy, so there was no need for me to look around anywhere else. Georgia is where I want to be, and it’s an honor to be the first [commitment] for next year.”

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Fields picked UGA among seven offers, including Tennessee, Alabama, and FSUHad Fields waited longer, he was expected to double or triple his scholarship offers.

“I like ‘Coach O’ a lot [Tennessee recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron], but Georgia was my first offer and my first love,” Fields said. “I’m happy with Georgia, my family is happy with Georgia. That’s where I want to be, and I’m finished with my recruiting. I’m glad to get it over with. Georgia is my dream school. Now I can focus on Dalton football and helping us be the best team we can be.”

Fields, who is a junior, had told the AJC on that chances were high that he would give the Bulldogs an early pledge, and Fields delivered on his word on Saturday. “It’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog. It doesn’t get any better than this.”

The first commitment for Georgia Tech’s 2010 recruiting class was Collins Hill tailback Charles Perkins.

On Saturday, UGA also offered Tucker sophomore linebacker James Vaughters. [Click here to go to the story and see video of the sophomore sensation]

Do you believe that other schools’ recruiting results were that much different? Seriously, take a second and think about LSU, Auburn, Florida, Texas, even Oklahoma. Thats just the reality of the situation. It doesn’t make it right or wrong, its just the way it is. Not all of Coach Richt’s recruits were black, and even though it shouldn’t matter what color the kids are, I don’t think it was 95% like you said, it was probably more like 65 or 70% if we’re really going to have this discussion. I trust that Coach Richt is bringing in players that are the kind of kids that he wants to coach and win with. And knowing the kind of person that he and his asst. coaches are, I think that on the whole, those are good kids, regardless of their color. As for The University of Morehouse at Athens, you should find out the percentage of African American students among the entire student populous before you rename my school. I believe the percentage of black students at UGA is something like 8-10 percent. Which is actually a larger amount than when I was there, and I’m happy for that. Good for them, and good for anyone that goes to a good school to get an education or play football or do whatever. You seriously need to check yourself.

I dont know a lot about this guy, but he seems to be a good player based on the other schools that were recruiting him. The country is full of idiots unfortuantely theydont have to wear white sheets anymore, they can disguise themself and be even more dangerous. The Dawgs are certainly headed in the right direction. With as many skill position recruits as we got last year, the focus should be on the defense next year, the secondary in particular. Go Dawgs!

big o,

You’re right, no one respects UT right now, especially UGA fans. And for good reason, with all those National Championships Georgia has won the last 25 years. Of course, you guys were robbed 2 years ago of a national title…and the SEC title…and the SEC East title, all in the same year. You remember that year, when Tennessee ripped off Georgia’s head and crapped down their necks. Georgia fans are still crying about getting ripped off when they couldn’t take care of a barely above average UT team that season.

Yes, UT was bad last season. Yes, UGA beat us without too much trouble. Yes, we’ve had 2 bad seasons out of 4. And maybe our new coach has made some comments that probably shouldn’t have been made. But what has Georgia and their super-coach Mark Richt done? If you take off your red and black glasses for a minute, you’ll acknowledge that Georgia is a good not great program. They are consistently in the hunt, but have never taken the next step to be championship material. I’m not saying it’s easy to make that jump, but it annoys me to hear Georgia fans talking as if they are Florida or USC or something.

Tennessee has slipped some over the last decade, which is why Fulmer needed to be replaced. But if you and your team don’t respect UT, the Dawgs will get spanked again like they did 2 years ago. Despite what ESPN’s talking heads would have you believe, there is not a huge talent deficit at UT. If (and I admit, it’s a big if) UT can get even average QB play this season, we’ll be right there fighting for the East with the Floridas of the league.

Georgia needs to earn some respect before they start mouthing off, too.

Who cares if the kid is African-American or not? Can he play? That’s what matters. The thing that’s great about Richt is ALL his players love him and so do the parents. Competitive, let me get this straight. You (a tennessee fan) are telling UGA fans they need to earn some respect before mouthing off? Maybe you should direct that comment to Kiffin. I do believe he is UT’s head coach. What has he done to back up all his talk? That’s what i thought. I think big o made his comment not based on UT’s track record over the past 5, 10, 15, or 20 years. I think that comment was based on the circus that has come about over the past few weeks. I certainly don’t respect Kiffin after all his childish antics that have come about. The vol nation respects and supports this guy which is reason for lack of respect. God knows i wouldn’t tell a sole if i was a vol fan. I think you will understand a little more when UT gets ripped by every SEC team they face this year.

Competitive

sswinfordawg:

Your comments would have more weight if not for the treatment given to Fulmer by opposing fans the last 17 years. This was a man who was respectful to everyone, never made any inflammatory comments, and fielded a championship level team for most of his career. Opposing fans, including UGA fans, did nothing but ridicule the man for being too fat (The Great Pumpkin is not a compliment), too conservative (usually said before and after losing to the Vols), and too guarded in his comments (workin’ like heck).

Kiffin doesn’t care what UGA, UF, or any other fans think of him. He cares about recruiting great players, winning championships, and restoring pride for UT fans. So what if your feelings are hurt by his comments, or you think he is low class, or whatever. His job isn’t to make UGA fans like him! I agree he hasn’t won any games at UT, because he hasn’t coached any yet. I’ll bet that he wins his fair share this year, despite your prediction.

UT haters will disparage UT no matter who is coach, what the coach says, or how many games they win. I understand that. I just get annoyed with the holier than thou crap from so many. We are talking about college football coaches, and every one of them (including Richt) is cocky. It’s one of the traits that makes them successful. Kiffin should have kept some of his comments to himself, I agree. But I’m going to support UT football no matter what our coach says to fans and the media.

I’m with you on your comments “competitive”. UT is a fine program that had a down year. It happens to every program. And UGA is not a great program at this point, just a very, very good program. We do need to take that next step, and I believe that we are on the right track.

What I love about being in the SEC is playing against great competition: UF, UT, Auburn (another fine program that had a tough year), AL (maybe, they need to do it one more time), LSU. And even SC, Ole Miss (ask UF) and AK can beat you just about any year. Throw in UK and it’s a battle every week. Love it.

CMR is really inferior to the coach of the football program that we techies live vicariously through. Stupid mutts. Please quit enjoying your football team and the news that surrounds them. To all the Tennessee and Lame Kiffen supporters out there, the fact of the matter is your program is 3-5 against Mark Richt and has not won an SEC title since 1998. The program has fallen dramatically since the 90’s and by the looks of things, it is falling even more. Mark Richt may not have the national titles but he has the consistency of winning football games that makes him one of the better coaches in the SEC and true character, which says a lot in todays society. Lane Kiffen is 5-15 as a head coach and runs his mouth about coaches and programs that have proven that they can compete in the ELITE Southeastern Conference.Maybe that is why guys like Fields and Marlon Brown choose schools like Georgia. If I were a high school player, I would much rather play for an experienced coach with character than for a insecure, inexperienced little brat like Kiffen. If were Kiffen, I would shut my mouth until I have proven I can compete.

Gen Neyland,

That’s a laugh. Why don’t you tell the vols NOT to offer Jason Fields a Scholarship, if you think it is too early to be recruiting for next February ?

That’s why the vols, by the way, have continued to be out-recruited by the UGA Bulldogs – you waited too long to get involved.

7 Consecutive Years and Counting now, UGA has been ranked BETTER than the volmits in the Final AP Poll.

And, we out-recruited you again this year according to every sigle solitary recruiting service.

In the mean time the Vols are talked about constantly in the media (good and bad). Wow, it really is interesting. I will agree he’ll have to back it up this Fall. Hey SECfootball fan, i am sure you are the voice of every recruit out there by saying you would rather play for an expereinced coach like Richt instead of a brat like Kiffin. Then somthing must be incorrect if this brat can recruit the #1 player in the nation as well as a top 10 class with less than a month as a staff to recruit.
I think if I was a recruit, I would ask why would I go play for a coach that is complacent with his assistants and wont get the best coaching for his players. Why would I want to play for sub par coordinators like Bobo or Martinez? What is funny is no GA fan will admit the parallel between Richt and Fulmer now. Both are too loyal to a fault and look where it got Fulmer.

I am starting to wonder if some of these bloggers realize that the 1950’s are behind us. After that, I actually wonder if some of the bloggers are middle school students expressing their sarcasm as a means of dealing with inferiorities. The truth is that many of these comments have a racial overtone, an elitist undertone, and are based on ignorance. Do you really believe talking trash makes an impression on other? Your right, most think you are a clueless idiot. No, you don’t seem cool. You seem like a desperate buffoon. In terms of Jalen Fields, I am very excited about this young man. 6’5 245 pass rusher is exactly what UGA has been needing. I talked to a cousin of mine and he told me that the young man is a great kid too. Welcome to the Bulldog family. Jalen let me encourage you to avoid all the negative comments. You will always hear childish morons making insinuations about the quality of students that UGA recruits. The truth is that these clowns are spewing recruiting propaganda. You will learn that grades and test scores are confidential and not accessible to the general public. Yes, those people are haters. They will tell you that UGA places kids in JUCO and prep schools. The truth is that is very rare. Yes, Coach Richt believes in giving every kid a chance no matter his socioeconomic status. Some struggling kids need another year at a prep school to get ready for college. To me, that is a sign of a good Christian man. To make fun of children, reveals a lack of character. Sadly, most of the modern culture is based on the lack of empathy for others. That is so sad to me. We wonder why our country is in such a mess. That is not cool, rather it is a psychopathic tendencies. I continue to wonder why the AJC continues to promote UT. There were other schools that offered this young man, but the AJC wants to fuel the flames of gossip between the two schools. Did Randy Shannnon make any recruiting allegations when the Brown kid signed with UT? No, he has class. He doesn’t pout like a child that doesn’t get his way. Go DAWGS.

I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech, and a hell of an Engineer
A Helluva, Helluva, Helluva, Helluva, Helluva Engineer
Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear.
I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an Engineer.

Oh, if I had a daughter, sir, I’d dress her in white and gold,
And put her on the campus To cheer the brave and bold.
But if I had a son, sir, I’ll tell you what he’d do–
He’d yell: ‘TO HELL WITH GEORGIA!’ Like his daddy used to do.

Oh, I wish I had a barrel of rum, and Sugar three thousand pounds
A college bell to put it in, And a clapper to stir it round.
I’d drink to all the good fellows, who come from far and near.
I’m a Ramblin’, Gamblin’, HELL OF AN ENGINEER!

Where are you Daddydawg? Still trying to use Shakespeare to solve your math equations? LOL. 45-42, whipped the junk yard dawgs between the hedges, in their own yard, down by 2 touchdowns at the half, in front of 90,000 faithful and 50,000,000 on television and satellite. All those years of out recruiting us didn’t mean squat did it Daddydawg? LOL. Number 1 in the nation my azzzz. LOL. 45-42, will be worse next year at our house. I guarantee it.

daltondawg,

I think YOU can bank on it happening to YOU again next year. But you know what, I don’t want to sound like all you Georgia “Wait till next year” guys. So I will stay in the present…………………45-42! IN YOUR OWN BACK YARD!!!!!!!!!! tore your number one in the nation, junk yard dawg azzzes UP between the hedges, in YOUR own yard, being down by TWO touchdowns at the half, in front of 90 thousand faithful and 50 million television viewers around the world. WITH all those five star recruits that can’t spell Calculus againts all of our two star recruits who PASS it. No, my friend, the tables have been turned. Not only do we own you in the business world, we NOW own your ugly, mangy, flea ridden hairy azzzes BETWEEN THE LINES now TOO. Better get (AND STAY) on the equestrian and gymnastic boards where you can beat us 45-42. “Well it wont happen again, bank on it”. How original. LOL.

First of all, congrads to Jalen Fields. I know him personally and I watch him on Friday nights at Dalton Football games. He will be a great addition to UGA football.

Now for the knuckleheads that’s clinging to the fact that GT did beat UGA last year 45-42, big deal we will be at Bobby Dodd this season and we will see if Tech will be consistent or living off the high from last year’s game.

And as I said before, at least we beat LSU. UGA 52 LSU 38. LSU 38 GT 3.

No focus in that game whatsoever. Tech was still dreaming about beating UGA. LOL. Next time focus on every game you play.

Dalton,

I wish jalen Fields all the best as well. But tell me Mr Carpet installer, what were you focused on last year in the Florida game? I couldn’t even enjoy the Tech game that day because your (or should I say Florida’s) score kept changing over head like a pin ball machine. LOL, Nice focus in the Alabama game as well. Last time I checked, Bama beat you 31-0 befoire they put the practice squad in. Rest assured, with no off week advantage this year, we will beat you again. YOU, can count on it.

Buzz, you should come to G-Day on April 11. Admission is free, so you don’t have to ask your mom for an advance on your allowance. Come out to Athens and say it to me and my friends’ face. Unless your stinger falls off and you forget the way. But Techies know the way to Athens for sure, thats where they all go each weekend to find actual hot girls, cause you know all the girls at Tech look like their faces caught on fire and they tried to put them out with a fork. I will make sure to find you at this years game, right after we break every one of your players and rock your weak a$$ “stadium” to the ground. Grow a pair and bring what you got, me and my Dawgs will be ready.

Overcompensation,

You sure do talk loud over the internet.

I am going to the G-Day game April 11th but will not open a can until after the game and outside the stadium. I date a girl from there and I bet she could probably kick your azz and a few of your bandmates. More than likely, I will be wearing black and gold and an old GT Baseball hat.

Great recruit. A DE that is 6′5″, 250lbs., 4.6 speed puts him physically among the top DE prospects in the country. With his head and heart already with the Dawgs for years, he seems to have great potential. Certainly the kind of recruit that will stay with his commitment thru signing day. Another solid recruiting job by Richt and team.

How many of you played and/or playing for TN, GA, or GT? Thats what I thought. And judging by the comments, and whats being said, I doubt if most of you have gone to any of the universities mentioned as a student or fan. Can’t we all agree that SEC and ACC football is the best around, and enjoy the games without the BS….its about SEC pride.

Buzz,

Better yet, you can watch the G-Day game on ESPN. Yeah we get that kind of coverage regardless if we get blowed out or not. Yes we got caught up in the hype of both those games, but we didn’t make any excuses for losing those games. The second tech loses every body turns on them. Bandwagon fans.

P.S. Did I touch a nerve?

Buzz, needs a reality check. Mouthing off after just one victory and loves to point out our losses but what about yours. You did go 9-4 while we went 10-3. And GT didn’t suffer the injuries we did. See you in November. I know you won’t answer my questions because BUZZ is full of it.
