Coach Kitten will always sparkle as a recruiter, he is after all just a little bit older than the kids he is recruiting. he knows their language, their music, their mindset and yes he knows how to push their buttons. He should know all this, because that is where he is at mentally as well. If ever someone was seriously overmatched for the job before him, than this is the classic example. UT has tremendous history and tradition. With the great recruits they will bring in (at least the first 2-3 years), they will be respectable. What the UT faithful want though is something different than respectable. UT fans want to challenge/compete for the SEC championship every year. Sadly for them, this will not, and cannot happen under the "boy coach" who is dreadfully unprepared to deliver the results of a Saban or Meyer, who got their jobs because they earned them. The best coaches in the league are guys who earned their stripes actually coaching and leading programs to success. They have proven themselves to be able to run championship caliber programs based upon their accomplishments, not their daddy's resume' or the success of Pete Carroll. Kitten got this job while literally never doing anything in the sport outside of recruiting well for one of the best college programs in the country that every great recruit wanted to attend already. And trust me, that "recruiting" staff he assembled, has little success actually coaching games. A bunch of car salesman assembled to collect talent in order to "hide" their coaching deficiencies. Even the great Monte has been away from the college game a long long time. Without him on that stuff however, this would have been an unmitigated 100% disaster.

Yeah, Orgeron had the same energy and antics at Ole Miss for 4 years and didn’t win squat. At some point they still have to coach, and NONE of them have a good record as a head coach. Gimmicks will not win the SEC.

Ole Miss had a pretty good year this past year as I recall remember??? And Ed Orgeron recruited those players so please look up facts before you post some of this crap, and he left for more money in the NFL.. And those gimmicks you mentioned sure seemed to work when he was at USC along with Lane Kiffin...

Complete joke? Signed the #1 player in the country thats no joke. I've heard that Brown won't be that great because he played weak competition, but Ya'll never acknowledge that Washaun Ealey might have played the weakest competition of any top-100 recruit in A football. Brown was a standout at all the all-american and all-star games he participated in as well. Kfffin signed a top-10 class in 2 months which is incredible. So he's rude and offensive, so are Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, and Steve Spurrier and as I recall they are pretty successful coaches with more National Championships than Richt has even though richt has signed nothing but top-10 classes since he arrived at Georgia. How about actually letting Kiffin coach before you pass judgement on his ability. Yeah he went 5-15 with the Raiders, a franchise that the NFL just needs to get rid of. Oakland is where high draft picks go to die. Just ask Jemarcus Russell. Al Davis is the biggest joke of an owner. Don't get mad because Tennessee will beat the mutts this year in Knoxville.

wow!!! i went to a camp at USC 2 years ago and pete carroll and the assistants did the same thing. lane should come up with his own way to recruit instead of doing the same thing as sc including the same chant, t-shirt ripping, and mosh pitt. kiffin with oregeron is scary though wen it comes to recruiting no one beats oregeron

Yep, lots of sour bulldogbuttsniffers here, lol! From rivals.com:

Now that Bryce Brown has signed with Tennessee, what do you think of the job the new staff did in Knoxville? And how much more competitive does this staff make the SEC?

-- Bill from Atlanta
-----
I have said over and over that Lane Kiffin's staff would make Tennessee a recruiting superpower. But I didn't expect it to happen this quickly.

The late addition of Bryce Brown moved Tennessee into the top 10 of the team recruiting rankings.
I didn't think there was any way the Volunteers would turn wide receiver Nu'Keese Richardson from Florida, any way they would turn defensive back Janzen Jackson from LSU, any way they would even be in the hunt for Brown.

There just wasn't enough time.

But the Vols turned Richardson away from the home-state Gators, turned Jackson away from the home-state Tigers, then signed the most prized recruit in the class of 2009 in Brown.

The Vols now are ranked No. 10 overall in the national team recruiting rankings. That's amazing. A coach's first class always is the toughest to put together, no matter who you are or where you are, simply because recruiting is about building relationships. Kiffin and his staff had three short weeks to do what coaches in the SEC have been doing for months – recruit and build relationships with prospects, parents and coaches. Yet they still closed strong, which proves what I have been saying for three months.

We already have seen the effect defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin is having on recruits. Defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron always has been regarded as one of the nation's finest recruiters and was instrumental in landing Jackson. Running back coach Eddie Gran was the man when it came to landing Richardson and had a big hand with offensive coordinator Jim Chaney in getting Brown.

Linebacker coach Lance Thompson was the Rivals.com national recruiter of the year in 2008 while at Alabama. Quarterback coach David Reaves and wide receiver coach Frank Wilson also are good recruiters.

You put this all together and you have a great recruiting staff – which means that the SEC just got a little tougher, if you can imagine that.

I always respected the UT football team when they took the field against my beloved Bulldogs. But I never knew Vol fans were so stupid.

Lets see how this act has worked out 3 years from now.

Yes sir, I would really want to send my son to a coach that is borderline gossip queen combined with homoerotic tendencies. What core values is his actions representing? I'm desperate and I will do anything for attention. This egomanic approach is what got our country in the mess that it is in. No foundation, just impulsive reactions without consideration for the long term. Kid ask Kiffin, hey coach what majors does UT offer? Response, who cares, we can shake our flab for you. Hey did you catch my transgender dance. It was so OMG cool. Hey coach, can I play as a freshman, sure, just show up and stroke my ego and everything goes. Hey coach, Coach Myer called me. Response: hang up because we can start texting some gossip about him. Coach Richt just called. Oh just tell him to go to church on Sunday and I will sing to you. Coach Saban just called. OMG, he just wants to talk about football. Tell him that we are more concerned with getting attention cast upon us. What is so great about football? In truth, this gimmick approach is nothing but desperation. True UT fans have to be disappointed. A great school resorting to drag queen behavior to recruit kids. Yikes.

Is UT paying for all the advertisement you are putting in the AJC. Why not spend more ink on Johnson, Richt, other local coaches, the UGA baseball team, etc.. You write about Kiffy's idiotic acts and comments just about every other day. Do the in state coaches need to act stupid to get AJC coverage? The AJC shouldn't be the school newspaper for UT but you sure are acting like it. If you truly think Kiffy is doing and saying controversial things by design, then why do you bite and write about it every time he expels gas? Time to move on to something else. The daily saga of dumb Kiffy is getting old.

Great stuff if it works. But if it does not produce success/victories, all credibility in the UT program will be gone. Convincing naive 18 year olds is one thing, producing victories on the field is another. His tactics with recruits reminds me an awful lot of what Rush Week was when I was in college. Once Rush Week was over, things were back to the way they always were - the elite fraternities were still the elite, and the wannabees were still the wannabees. UT fans may buy into Kiffin's preseason hype, but the unfornuate thing about this scenario, is that he will be the glass jaw of the Vols in 2009, same as with the Raiders. You won't scare anyone in the SEC with big talk, if you can't coach them up. One thing is for sure, his mouth has made sure that no SEC team will be underestimating the Vols this year.

You no it kinda sounds like a bunch of college kids talking smack on here about UT. You guys sound a little worried about Tennessee football to me.When I read the article it says nothing about Lane ripping his shirt off, beside all the other great coaches you mention here you guys might check out some of the stunts these coaches have pulled in their younger days..But it sounds like you guys are to young to remember those days LOL..Oh and man I forgot about how good Steve Spurrier was in his pro coaching debut LOL...UT might not be back next year but in 3 or 4 years all this smack talk may come back to smack you right in the face. UT has one of if not the best coaching staffs ever put together "EVER" in college football. And to finish 8th in recruiting not to mention getting the top 2 running backs in the country, wait till they have a full year to recruit.. Might be an awful lot of crow eating on these boards in the next few years LOL....Oh and here is Pete Carroll wonderful pro coaching debut. But he must suck at coaching to because his pro cachong career...(The Jets got off to a 6–4 start under Carroll, but in week 12, he was the victim of Dan Marino's clock play that led to a Miami Dolphins game winning touchdown. The Jets lost all of their remaining games to finish 6–10. He was fired after one season)

Come on guys, what can we expect them to do? They hired the coach that is personably responsible for the success of USC, nevermind the fact their offense hasn't missed a beat since he left and they still dominate the Pac 10. Coach L Kiffin blames Al Davis for the Raiders misfortune, but isn't this the same Al Davis that owned the Raiders when they were winning championships? And lets not forget Coach O, who was also personalbly responsible for USC's success, see USC's results since he left, oddly they mirror Coach Lane Kiffin. The only real difference is OM was decent before he got there, and won as many games the year AFTER he left as they did the 3 he was the coach. But then he carried his talents to the NFL, where the under achieving Saint's DL most noteworthy acomplishment was using banned substances, thats partuiculary interesting. Add those 2 stars of the team with a drunk, another that chases the 18 year old co-eds harder than he recruits, the next coach Clawson and the poster boy for depends. Of course the rest of the conference and nation are huddling in fear with all those great football minds asembled at one site.

But make no mistake, the UT recruiting machine of old is back in business. Did anyone else notice UT's success started to dwindle when Bama went on probation? The recruiting money stopped flowing out of Knoxville and not many recuits wanted to spend "free" time in that crap hole of a town. Who could blame them? UT will recruit well, but they don't have a staff to develope the talent and will continue to be what they are until the NCAA investigates and probation follows, then they will become MSST.

Atl Dawg maybe you should look deep into recruiting and see that these kinds of things have been going on long before now. Heck this isnt the first time it has happened at an SEC school, Orgeron did it at Ole Miss and look at the talent he was able to bring in. People want to talk about what Kiffin hasnt won yet but if i remember Richt hadnt ever won as a head coach before taking the UGA job. Neither had Fulmer. Look at Sabans record and Spurriers record in the pros. Now look at the coaches that Lane has brought in, Monte as DC nuff said, Eddie Gran was a hell of a coach at Auburn see Caddy Williams and Ronnie Brown, Orgeron as Dline coach look at his Miami lines and USC lines,Chaney as OC was great with Drew Brees at Purdue. Lane may shoot off at the mouth a tad bit but honestly who cares? Society has become and entertainment society and right now hes bringing it , UTs name in the news means more publicity for recruits.

I can't wait to see what you have to say this season after all the beatings you are gonna get. I love that UT has given it's keys to a child. See you in Hogtown!

I'm not too worried about Lil' Lane's recruiting "skillz" because UT will be under NCAA investigation within a few years. Ed Orangutan was a dirty recruiter at ole miss before he was fired, but I'm sure that's why Lane paid him so much money. It's also a little suspicious that two high-profile out-of-state running backs who share the same "handler," (AKA agent, Brian Butler) both sign with UT after NSD. Somebody -Butler- had a hand out looking for "incentives," and then convinced both to go to UT. I'm not saying that UT boosters didn't something unethical, I'm just saying.

Where do the Vol fans get the ridiculous idea that we Gators are scared of Tennesee. We have consistently beaten the vols like a drum. Come to the "Swamp" September 19 and see if you can sense fear in the Gator Nation; and make sure that lame kitten is there to share in the vols continuing humiliation by the National Champions.

Stephen, you are right. When CMR and company gets three td's up. They insert the back ups for valuable game time experience. And please hold predictions on how good your defense is going to be until they actually play a down.

Oh, and one more thing for those Vol fans who are crowing about the foolish Kiffins recruiting class and how the ends are justifying the means. We had a guy down here a couple of years ago, Ron Zook, and he could recruit too.

Personally, I think anyoone who uses the word "Crunk" is perfect for that kind of nonsense. If you have to get recruits by resorting to some sort of Lord of the Flies BS, you get what you deserve. I wish I could say more, but my high horse isn't all that high since this is probably how opposing fans looked at Soulja Boy and the Trinton Sturdivant dance war in Jacksonville

Michael, are you serious? Did you not read the comments of players that said it was "awkward" and no one "knew what to do?" They just had middle aged men rip their shirts off in front of them.

You guys just love quote machines and stunt pullers like Kiffin. It makes for good business obviously. But what about when he has to actually live up to the hype that you're helping him create?

What's going to happen when he struggles to win 5 to 7 games and loses every important game on their schedule because they have no QB?

Well, I guess he'll be in trouble. And that's good for business too, now isn't it?

ctownvol...shouldn't that "t" in your name be a "l" as in clown??? Because that is what your coach is, what your program has become and based on your comments here, what you have been for quite some time. If you're such be a big man, come on down to the Swamp on that fateful day in Sept and we'll find out just how big you are. Heres the real bottom line for me...if my coach started acting like that and representing my school like that, I'd want him OUT, national championships or no national championships. Happily, I know I'm NEVER gonna have to worry about that scenerio with Coach Meyer.

rockmartVOL, We are not worried about UT football. And we are the #1 school in the state. What bowl did UT go to and what bowl did Vandy go to. How did your season compare to Vandy. GT bearly beat us this year in the rain. And trust me, they let us know it every single day. But at least we can say we beat you last year, even when the UT media tried to play up that whole Fulmer's last game thing like the year before. Clean up your own backyard before coming on here and talking foolish senseless verbage.

We do own our fan base in the state and you are correct ATL is a melting pot, but the other small towns are not. And as long as CMR is at the healm we will be very competitive. Even though we lost three games last year, we still on ten of them even with all of those injuries. For those of us who followed UGA football before CMR, we will stay behind him until he retires.

The folks who are praising Kiffin are missing the big picture and remind me a lot of folks who called Obama "savior" last November. They're praising a guy who's done nothing. The Vols may very well wind up dominating the SEC. I doubt it, but it could happen. But even if he wins the national championship for a decade running and coaches UT for the next 40 years... That's all unforeen. But no reasonable person can look at what he's done so far at Tennessee and label it as anything other but classless and immature.

What is funny is how all the Tennessee fans are eating this up! Look, acting juvenile and causing controversy does not necessarily equal to a great football coach. It is not like you Tennessee people have got a choice in the matter or anything. All it shows is how desperate you guys are to be important again. You guys would rally around Ronald McDonald if he was named coach at Tennessee. Who knows, this guy is liable to dress like a clown to recruit and you Tennessee people would hail it as an innovative recruiting method. How are you guys going to feel if he continues his comedy tour into the football season? Eventually you will get tired of being laughed at and see the reality of the situation. I will predict you guys will be wishing for Fulmer to come back within a year.

Note to all rival fans, we are not worried about UT or the coaching staff. I wish the AJC would stop running this story.
hey DAWG678, I can remember when we beat them by three TD's in back to back years. As for Peyton, at least our best two players won the Heisman Trophy when they played college ball(Trippi and Walker). Name one team that lost both of their two starting LT and was hti by the injuiry bug as we did won the MNC. Anyone, anyone, I thought so. DAWG678, they are not right and by you agreeing with them, I believe you are a poser. I will see you in Athens this fall and I hope you will support us instead of them. GO DAWGS!

Is it just me or does this story of a bunch of older and younger, shirtless men jumping up and down together in the close quarters of a conference room 'mosh pit' while yelling "UT Wild Boys" sound like a homoerotic Duran Duran video? Throw in the Orange and it well as may be a pride parade.
