Building a fence around Georgia

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson hinted that next year’s recruiting class may be entirely comprised of prospects from the state of Georgia. Last month, the Jackets signed 14 in-state players, the largest haul since 1992.

“The state is very important,” Johnson said. “We wanted to try to make an emphasis on that, and we have. There’s a chance we may take everybody in-state this year [with our 2010 scholarships]. We may take them all from Georgia.”

Georgia Tech expects to sign between 12-15 players next year, and already has its first commitment with Collins Hill tailback Charles Perkins. “I think there’s a lot of good players in Georgia, there’s some great high school coaches, and football is important,” Johnson said. “We’re one of the two bigger in-state schools and we need to make sure that we are very thorough here.”

“Now does that mean we won’t go outside? No. But if we are going outside of the state, those guys need to be remarkably better than the guys we can find in the state. As long as we can find guys with what we need academically in the state, there is no use to bypass them for somebody else. Having said that, I think that you really, really want to also concentrate on the contiguous states that are touching Georgia. We’re just as close to some parts of South Carolina or Alabama as we are to parts of Georgia. Those states I consider to be a one little hub. What I’m talking about is that it doesn’t make sense for us to be in Ohio, Pennslyvania, or California, or Texas trying to make a living, when we have good players here.”

Meanwhile, UGA coach Mark Richt said homegrown talent has always been the No. 1 priority. The Bulldogs landed 11 players from the Peach State last month. “The state of Georgia will always be the hub of our recruiting. We’re 69-percent Georgia kids on our roster, and that’s part of the reason I took this job,” Richt said. “There are great players in this state. Every once in a while, an out-of-state player gets involved, but they have to be pretty special. We’re not going to another state to find a No. 2. We’re looking for No. 1’s there.”

“We’re fortunate to play well over the last few years where we do generate interest from outside of the state. When Matthew Stafford [from Texas] or Knowshon Moreno [New Jersey] are interested, you’ve got to recruit them. The thing about A.J. Green [South Carolina] and some kids from North Carolina, it’s not quite the state of Georgia, but it’s within striking distance. A lot of those kids are not awful far away.”

“But we absolutely love the state of Georgia. When I was at Florida State, we knew with just about every kid we got out of Georgia that he was tough, that he could compete, and that he was well coached. There’s a talent base in Georgia, and a bunch of high school coaches doing an awesome job preparing them for our type of program.”

Hey Bumble Buzzard, Our type of program has won 7 of the last 8 games against the Ghetto Yech Trade School. Which would you rather have, 45 – 42 or 7 out of 8? Even someone from the Ghetto can answer that.

The crimson tide is trying to move in the state of Georgia this year. Saban and company has offered
a lot of scholarships to players in the greater Atlanta area this year. Coach Richt and Rodney Garner
have done a great job of closing the borders in the state. Auburn and Clemson have all ways recruited
Georgia heavy for good football players and UcheaT has got there share of players also. I am happy
that Saban is recruiting in Georgia because the state of Alabama football recruits for 2010 are down this year and the state of Georgia is loaded with talented football players!! GO BAMA ROLL TIDE!!

Coach CPJ is really in a mode whereby he is hand selecting who he wants, rather than CMR who is hoping to land what he can, but will likely miss on most (see Stephen Hill as exhibit A). The recruits of Georgia have a very basic decision before them, they can go to a school in which National Championships will be the norm, play in one of the most historic, loudest and most intimidating stadiums in the land, play in an explosive offense that is likely to be adopted by the NFL, all while playing for a coach who is the standard by which all others are measured. If a recruit values those key elements, they can only make one choice and that will be to play on The Flats.

Some of these posters are delusional…National Championships are the norm? Are you kidding me? Anyway, I am fan of Georgia high school football and I’m glad that Tech realizes the value in recruiting local. If CPJ can return Tech to national relevance with mostly GA players it can only help to raise this state’s stature in the nations eyes (ala Florida). As y’all know CMR has always emphasized the great talent from Georgia. Little known fact…The state of Georgia had the fourth most D1 signees this year, behind Texas, Florida, and Cali. We don’t get the national attention b/c Tech hasn’t been a consistent winner. Maybe Johnson can lead them to some consistent ACC championship games, then maybe our rivalry will be must see t.v. nationallly. Go Dawgs!

CD, that crap was funny…good job of pretending you were serious. I’m still laughing. Good job of using all the strengths that UGA show and then claim them as your own.

Most historic, LOUDEST and most INTIMIDATING stadiums in the land, LOL, stop it. Hmmm, 92,000 and sold out EVERY game versus 45,000 of which 25,000 show up for a game. Other than UGA, name the last game that was sold out on the plains.

Yeah, the offense that will be adopted in the NFL, yep, in the 1940’s.

I do believe UGA in second in the nation behind Miami (by one player) for most players in the NFL.

A coach with standards? Yeah a commitment is a commitment (unless you are committed to another school and want to commit to us) see **Stephen Hill** as exhibit A.

Very funny Coach Dodd, you described UGA well. I think that there are plenty of talented players in the state of Georgia for UGA and GT to get the players that they want and compete for conference championships. Approx. 150 football players signed D1 scholarships. This leaves about another 100 to be signed by non-Georgia schools. I graduated from UGA but felt that a strong GT program only makes UGA better. The increase competition makes one work harder. I want GT to push UGA to higher heights.
As for Coach Johnson, I felt that he was a great coach at GSU and would do a good, if not great job at GT.
However, I still prefer Coach Richt over anybody else in the ACC or SEC.

Finally, the overall record is, 59-37-5…OUCH, now I understand why all of the Nerd Nation has such ____ envy when it comes to UGA!!

Reality again. Georgia as a state has always had top tier talent. You can go back in history to find great ones from the peach state. It should be a no brainer, but some of the carpetbaggers just don’t get it.

I hope tech wins again this year so the game becomes a rivalry again. I remember the fight on Thanksgiving a few years back. My buddy and I were running into the stadium to see it unfold. Yeah, we’re from Atlanta, better late than never right. Can’t wait to get going.

What is not stated in this article, which I believe was mentioned by a poster yesterday and is common knowledge among GT insiders, is that CPJ already has several secret commits in the stable, including RB Mack Brown. I also have it on authority that the DL from Warner Robins (Whitaker) has privately committed as well. Let’s face it, CPJ is slowly putting the clamps down on the state and relegating CMR to having to chase 2 star recruits in other states, while getting embarrassed in state.

I’m pretty sure “Coach Dodd” above was a UGA fan trying to make Tech fans look stupid. Nice try, Tech fans are realists. Yes, we’ll be in the hunt for National Championships again soon, but our stadium is small and our crowds are more old than they are loud.

And the NFL isn’t likely to be adopting the triple option anytime soon.

We don’t care – college ball is college ball and CPJ and the Jackets are building on the success of this year and moving forward. Our 4 National Championships will be 5 before UGA gets #3.

Just going by pure numbers, there are way too many D-1 players in GA for UGA and Tech to sign…thus, they go to schools out of state. Both hometown teams always get there share, but sometimes teams like UT or Clemson get the ones who would rather leave their hometowns. Not everyone likes to stay in the same place all their lives, except for Bamafan who chooses time and time again to take the pot calling the kettle black route when he refers to UT as cheaters…look in the mirror next time you are wearing a roll tide shirt and then you will see the true cheaters name, which was proven in court on more than one occasion.

Hey Ramble On

You are delirious if you think CPJ has taken over the state. Your two points were Exhibit 1: 45-42. You need to win more than one time in 8 years to claim superiority. Don’t see it happening. Exhibit 2: Stephen Hill. Are you kidding me. Stephen Hill was going to commit to UGA all the way up until the night before when CMR advised him that it would better serve him to sign with Tech. Why because Marlon Brown had called coach and told him he was coming to Athens. Stephen Hill was a backup plan in case Brown did not commit. We got the player we wanted. Not a slight to Mr. Hill as he is a fine player and from what I can see a good kid but he would not play at UGA with the receivers we have and he knew it. The players that you signed from GA are good but not great as is your coach. He is good not great. I sincerely hope he does bring Tech back to “prominence”. As a matter of fact I hope you guys are undefeated heading into our game because it will be priceless to watch you get your _ _ _ handed to you in front of your 15,000 rabid fans and to watch you throw your pocket protectors down in disgust.

The State of Georgia has been bleeding talent for too many years. Programs like Clemson, Auburn, Tennessee and Alabama have been feeding in Georgia for years. Why? Because there is a lot of well-coached talent in this State Having two programs rising in prominence and competing for recruits will only improve both programs catches. Quality prospects in this State would have little reason to look elsewhere.

The rise of GT’s program will be a very good thing for UGA. Let the rivalry thrive and watch the entire State of Georgia move up the ranks of college football.

To whoever referred to the three vacated games in the Tech – UGAG series, if I am not mistaken, those vacated games were restored after appeal. But even if they were not, that does NOT mean that UGAG has 3 more wins in the series; a vacated game means essentially that no game was played. As far as stadium comparisons go, wtf cares? Obiously none of y’all remember the days when Tech’s stadium was considerably larger than Sanford stadium and always sold out. Nobody went to Athens before Dooley came, and on several occasions the mutts rented out Grant Field for a double header with Tech in Atlanta. That last happened in 1961. Yes, those are days long gone by, but tides do turn (no reference to Bama), and fortunes do change. And the past several years of Tech – UGAG games are no more relevant to today than the stadiums of the past are. Any sane and objective fan of college football can see that CPJ is one helluva coach, and his chances for success in Atlanta are very very good. One game in a series does not redefine the entire series, but it sure does provide a lot of insight into the quality of coaching and play, and what was seen in Sanford Stadium last November does not bode well for the mutts. THWG !!!

Tech fans are very excited about beating Georgia for the first time in many years. Georgia fans act the same way when they beat Florida once in a while. And Georgia fans thought the Florida series was finally turned around with the end-zone dance and the victory in 2007. I can remember all the hope inside the program and on the blogs.

Truth is folks, one game does not change a series. Florida was pi$$ed about losing that game and felt disrespected. So in 2008, they beat the tar out of us and took time outs to rub it in our face.

So tech, be careful all this trash talking and confidence doesn’t come back to bite you like it did us. Georgia coaches, players, and fans have circled this game on their calender and have very similar feelings to the Gators before they waxed our a$$es in Jacksonville. Taking the hedges and making rings “ring” any bells with you guys?

I won’t be surprised if Georgia does the same thing to Tech that Florida did to Georgia. Just be careful on the trash you talk. We will remind you of it if we return the favor this year. And it won’t be pretty, polite, or classy. You are setting yourselves up big time just like we did.

Coach Dodd, you are an idiot my friend. It is okay to be proud of your program. You do have the right coach, but don’t be delusional. UGA only went after Stephen Hill when they missed out on national recruits. He only chose Tech, because he knew he was Tech’s first choice. Did I mention, he was you’re highest ranked recruit. I know a lot of the posters on here are out of touch with reality. But I think UGA fans have to admit, things are not as easy as they used to be. Think about it. GT won vs. UGA this season (I know most UGA fans will say 7 out of 8 and that’s fine, but we’re not talking history here, we’re talking about trends). GT recruited more in state players than UGA did this year, 14 to 11. GT went head to head with UGA on a player and won. And not just a player, a WR!!!! Think about that. A kid who I’m sure heard all the negative recruiting about how he will not be used enough at GT, still choose GT over UGA. I’m not making this stuff up. I think that Paul Johnson has started a movement and I’m not sure a UGA without Stafford/Moreno can reverse it in one year. So we’ll see what happens.

You’ve got to hand it to Coach Johnson and players for going into UGA, falling behind early but coming out with a fire that no Tech team has had for a long time. That’s what Johnson brings to the team. Tech won’t be a push-over anymore in this game. Maybe if Tech wins the game this year, there won’t be many excuses for why UGA lost. No UGA fan can tell me with a straight face that they expected the success they’ve enjoyed the past 8 years. Tech fans are realistic about our chances of success every year. I just can’t stand hearing UGA fans complain about a loss looking to point the finger at someone and then say “It’s a rebuilding year”. By the way, LawDawg those players on UGA team don’t have much going for them when they either graduate if they can or go pro and flop in 2-3 years. Lane Kiffin will have to do a lot more than just run his mouth to worry me. I’m LMAO at all these people getting so fired up about him. I’m much more concerned with getting the Florida rivalry back where it belongs.

Your wrong. Even Tech’s management program is ranked higher than UGA’s business school.

LawDawg, I guess you haven’t been a UGA fan very long because you would of known that they were hyped up to be the best in 1981, the year after the won their last National Championship. I guess you must of not known that. They did terrible that year going 5-5. That’s sad that a Tech fan knows more about your football team than you do. At least Tech’s had a National Championship in the last 20 years. That’s more than i can say about UGA. I gaurantee that UGA won’t be Tech’s best game next year because UGA won’t be as good next year since they were so good this year. What a joke! Don’t act like UGA doesn’t try to play there best game against Tech considering the games the last five years have been decided by 6 points or less. Hey Long Dawg, do you really think Tech is nothing without you sinkin #&% mutts. Who has more National Championships? UGA was nothing until Dooley got there, and when he lefy UGA was nothing until Richt got there.

Preston, Your a joke. Do you know the difference between UGA and Tech graduates? UGA graduates end up working for Tech graduates. UGA has a good Business program and …… i couldn’t think of anything else. I have a friend that got into UGA and he’s an idiot and he’s been there for 6 years. I guess that’s common practice for UGA students but i’m sure you couldn’t even get in.

1981 UGA team went 5-5? Really?

I could have swore that team lost one game to Clemson and won the SEC and lost to Dan Marino in the Sugar Bowl.

Ramblinwrecker,

The more you type and pretend to be “better than us” just because you went to Tech, the dumber you appear. Then you spout your vast knowledge of UGA football by declaring the 1981 SEC champions as going “5-5″.

Probably better for you to not type anymore……………..

Thanks to everyone who took the time to work up the vitriol that’s gone into the comments above. I needed a laugh, and I knew if I came to these blogs I would get it. I can only hope you guys don’t really take all this as seriously as your posts might indicate.

Fellow Jackets, Be Proud…. but don’t be stupid; we’ve got a much tougher road this coming year. Let’s take care of our business, and let the folks in Athens tend to theirs….

Dscott, your right. I was wrong on 1981, it was 1989 when UGA posted a 6-6 season when they were supposed to be really good. Excuse me for the mistake and I’m not trying to sound better that UGA. As i said before that it’s a good school but i can’t stand when UGA fans say their better in sports and academics. Remember that there is more sports than just football. And by the way gdawgin, my friend isn’t in Athens trying to be a doctor. He’s doing what alot of UGA students do, avoid the real world and get drunk every night. How pathetic.

31-0 at the half?!!!

Nothing wrong with being proud of your school – but let’s keep it in proper perspective:

Both GT and UGA have had thier moments of being in the national spotlight – but neither team is considered royalty or elite when talking national scale.

Both teams are fierce league competitors – respected as regional powers.

Both teams are historically and on average – 4th or 5th best in their league any given year – and will occaisionally be in position for a title – but never in contention on a consistent basis.

UGA has more of recent share of national exposure – but this is rare for UGA. Their best years were during WW2 – when the rest of the country was at war, the Hershall years – and early Richt era.
UGA is now relegated as (at best) the 2nd best team in the SEC East – and is fighting with TN and SC for 2nd, 3rd or 4th SEC East position.

GT – was a national power – and lost their MOJO – left he SEC in the early 60’s – dang near died – wanted back in the SEC late 70’s – denied as they were still an arrogant group. Yet has been through a humbling period.

Successful under Bobby Ross – well deserved National Title (should not have shared with 5th down and 1 loss colorado) – was a power a few years in late 90’s under coach O’Leary. Recently, a respectful and consistent 8 game winner – AND NOW , Coach Paul Johnson has made them an exciting team to watch – but as teams study the LSU game – they will figure out that GT will be a consistent 7 / 8 game winner under Johnson.

UGA basically blew it last year – defense was horrible in second half – give GT credit – they got the breaks and UGA defense choked under pressure ……again.

Both schools – regionally respected – but not even a blip on the national radar – reserved for the Alabama’s, USC’s, OHIO STATES, and now Florida’s of the college football world.

ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RAMBLE Steve KneeJerk ON Superior, you’ve been kind of silent lately haven’t you? Can you not come up with anything better than to keep posting 45-42. I thought a man of self-annointed intelligence such as yourself who has apparently taken that “tougher Tech Calculus course than at UGA” could have figured this one out. I gave it to my third grade daughter and she said:

45 minus 42 equals 3.

I hope this helps. Perhaps you can now move on to more difficult issues. LMAO!!!

Bama Stan….21-0 at the end of the first quarter????

Nice attempt to try and sound intelligent.

You try and trash UGA by saying they struggle in the SEC east. And what did Bama do against UF this year? Had they been in the cupcake west, then Bama would not have gone undefeated in the regular season and would not have appeared in the SEC title game (where you were exposed as being average).

Next, you bash GT saying they will consistently win 7-8 ballgames per year. They did that with Gailey. Johnson won 9 in his first year and I expect 9 to be their average wins per year.

Finally, how do you figure Bama is in the elite category? Don’t bother with the successes of the Bear or Stallings. You have one good season in a down year for the SEC and you’re suddenly one of the elite? Elite teams don’t get handed their rear ends two games in a row, especially two games of great significance.

Bama has been an afterthought for many years (remember 2007), and the next undefeated season may come in another decade or two if you’re lucky. However, Saban will NOT be at the helm at that time.

You need to stop dipping so much boy, that stuff’s done made you null and void.

#1bamafan – you can’t be serious. How many NCs have you won in the past 20 years? One maybe? How about the last 10 years? Stop living in the past. Bear died almost 30 years ago. Elvis is dead and a black man is President.

Let’s look at your overall record this decade: 65-47. Hardly impressive. In fact, just mediocre. During this same period of time we’ve gone 75-33.

By the way, Gomer, in the years where either team was ranked in the final top 25, we were ahead of Bama 3 times and you were ahead of us just twice.

21 – 0 at the end of the first quarter????

I think Georgia will have an advantage against Tech in recruiting for awhile until Tech has established itself for a little longer. One people need to stop saying “oh we beat UGA for stephen hill”. UGA didnt start recruiting him till the very end and with such a short time he was highly interested and thought about backing out of Tech. Has anyone thought that UGA wasnt that concerned since they got the #3 WR in the country! I bet after reading this you would think im a UGA fan…but def not..I dont hate UGA but I dont like much about them at all! You can catch me at games shouting THWG during the fight song. The only thing is that Tech does an amazing job recruiting in a low academic state with GT’s high standards! I think Tech will always be able to compete with Georgia as long as Tech keeps recruiting decent Defensive players( Many are in the NFL) and keep running that offense!

I hope GT has an awesome year and a way better BBall team! Fans need to stop talking like we are a powerhouse! However, we do have awesome history with the oldest stadium in history, Bobby Dodd,Calvin Johnson, John Heisman, and 4 national championships..Nothing can take that history away. UGA fans need to stop saying that Tech is second to Georgia in academics..UGA is not a bad school, Tech is just Excellent in some really awesome programs.
Hope tech lands some awesome recruits..need another DT
