Building a fence around Georgia

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson hinted that next year’s recruiting class may be entirely comprised of prospects from the state of Georgia. Last month, the Jackets signed 14 in-state players, the largest haul since 1992.

“The state is very important,” Johnson said. “We wanted to try to make an emphasis on that, and we have. There’s a chance we may take everybody in-state this year [with our 2010 scholarships]. We may take them all from Georgia.”

Georgia Tech expects to sign between 12-15 players next year, and already has its first commitment with Collins Hill tailback Charles Perkins. “I think there’s a lot of good players in Georgia, there’s some great high school coaches, and football is important,” Johnson said. “We’re one of the two bigger in-state schools and we need to make sure that we are very thorough here.”

“Now does that mean we won’t go outside? No. But if we are going outside of the state, those guys need to be remarkably better than the guys we can find in the state. As long as we can find guys with what we need academically in the state, there is no use to bypass them for somebody else. Having said that, I think that you really, really want to also concentrate on the contiguous states that are touching Georgia. We’re just as close to some parts of South Carolina or Alabama as we are to parts of Georgia. Those states I consider to be a one little hub. What I’m talking about is that it doesn’t make sense for us to be in Ohio, Pennslyvania, or California, or Texas trying to make a living, when we have good players here.”

Meanwhile, UGA coach Mark Richt said homegrown talent has always been the No. 1 priority. The Bulldogs landed 11 players from the Peach State last month. “The state of Georgia will always be the hub of our recruiting. We’re 69-percent Georgia kids on our roster, and that’s part of the reason I took this job,” Richt said. “There are great players in this state. Every once in a while, an out-of-state player gets involved, but they have to be pretty special. We’re not going to another state to find a No. 2. We’re looking for No. 1’s there.”

“We’re fortunate to play well over the last few years where we do generate interest from outside of the state. When Matthew Stafford [from Texas] or Knowshon Moreno [New Jersey] are interested, you’ve got to recruit them. The thing about A.J. Green [South Carolina] and some kids from North Carolina, it’s not quite the state of Georgia, but it’s within striking distance. A lot of those kids are not awful far away.”

“But we absolutely love the state of Georgia. When I was at Florida State, we knew with just about every kid we got out of Georgia that he was tough, that he could compete, and that he was well coached. There’s a talent base in Georgia, and a bunch of high school coaches doing an awesome job preparing them for our type of program.”

If we knew you Tech people were such little girls, we would not have let you score your 3 points in the bowl game.

Dscott, your right. I was wrong on 1981, it was 1989 when UGA posted a 6-6 season when they were supposed to be really good. Excuse me for the mistake and I’m not trying to sound better that UGA. As i said before that it’s a good school but i can’t stand when UGA fans say their better in sports and academics. Remember that there is more sports than just football. And by the way gdawgin, my friend isn’t in Athens trying to be a doctor. He’s doing what alot of UGA students do, avoid the real world and get drunk every night. How pathetic.

DawginLex, get ready for times to change. I hope you can get used to UGA losing next year and to Tech for years to come.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to work up the vitriol that’s gone into the comments above. I needed a laugh, and I knew if I came to these blogs I would get it. I can only hope you guys don’t really take all this as seriously as your posts might indicate.

Fellow Jackets, Be Proud…. but don’t be stupid; we’ve got a much tougher road this coming year. Let’s take care of our business, and let the folks in Athens tend to theirs….

Ramblinwreck, your friend seems to have his priorities straight in life. Six years in Athens? He might be a lot smarter than you think.

Ramblinwrecker,

The more you type and pretend to be “better than us” just because you went to Tech, the dumber you appear. Then you spout your vast knowledge of UGA football by declaring the 1981 SEC champions as going “5-5″.

Probably better for you to not type anymore……………..

1981 UGA team went 5-5? Really?

I could have swore that team lost one game to Clemson and won the SEC and lost to Dan Marino in the Sugar Bowl.

Preston, Your a joke. Do you know the difference between UGA and Tech graduates? UGA graduates end up working for Tech graduates. UGA has a good Business program and …… i couldn’t think of anything else. I have a friend that got into UGA and he’s an idiot and he’s been there for 6 years. I guess that’s common practice for UGA students but i’m sure you couldn’t even get in.

LawDawg, I guess you haven’t been a UGA fan very long because you would of known that they were hyped up to be the best in 1981, the year after the won their last National Championship. I guess you must of not known that. They did terrible that year going 5-5. That’s sad that a Tech fan knows more about your football team than you do. At least Tech’s had a National Championship in the last 20 years. That’s more than i can say about UGA. I gaurantee that UGA won’t be Tech’s best game next year because UGA won’t be as good next year since they were so good this year. What a joke! Don’t act like UGA doesn’t try to play there best game against Tech considering the games the last five years have been decided by 6 points or less. Hey Long Dawg, do you really think Tech is nothing without you sinkin #&% mutts. Who has more National Championships? UGA was nothing until Dooley got there, and when he lefy UGA was nothing until Richt got there.

[...] And offensive coordinator Shawn Watson has a history of success with mediocre quarterbacks. … No one leaves the state of Georgia, not as long as Mark Richt and Paul Johnson are on border patrol. And they’re both saving No. 33 [...]
