Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson hinted that next year’s recruiting class may be entirely comprised of prospects from the state of Georgia. Last month, the Jackets signed 14 in-state players, the largest haul since 1992.
“The state is very important,” Johnson said. “We wanted to try to make an emphasis on that, and we have. There’s a chance we may take everybody in-state this year [with our 2010 scholarships]. We may take them all from Georgia.”
Georgia Tech expects to sign between 12-15 players next year, and already has its first commitment with Collins Hill tailback Charles Perkins. “I think there’s a lot of good players in Georgia, there’s some great high school coaches, and football is important,” Johnson said. “We’re one of the two bigger in-state schools and we need to make sure that we are very thorough here.”
“Now does that mean we won’t go outside? No. But if we are going outside of the state, those guys need to be remarkably better than the guys we can find in the state. As long as we can find guys with what we need academically in the state, there is no use to bypass them for somebody else. Having said that, I think that you really, really want to also concentrate on the contiguous states that are touching Georgia. We’re just as close to some parts of South Carolina or Alabama as we are to parts of Georgia. Those states I consider to be a one little hub. What I’m talking about is that it doesn’t make sense for us to be in Ohio, Pennslyvania, or California, or Texas trying to make a living, when we have good players here.”
Meanwhile, UGA coach Mark Richt said homegrown talent has always been the No. 1 priority. The Bulldogs landed 11 players from the Peach State last month. “The state of Georgia will always be the hub of our recruiting. We’re 69-percent Georgia kids on our roster, and that’s part of the reason I took this job,” Richt said. “There are great players in this state. Every once in a while, an out-of-state player gets involved, but they have to be pretty special. We’re not going to another state to find a No. 2. We’re looking for No. 1’s there.”
“We’re fortunate to play well over the last few years where we do generate interest from outside of the state. When Matthew Stafford [from Texas] or Knowshon Moreno [New Jersey] are interested, you’ve got to recruit them. The thing about A.J. Green [South Carolina] and some kids from North Carolina, it’s not quite the state of Georgia, but it’s within striking distance. A lot of those kids are not awful far away.”
“But we absolutely love the state of Georgia. When I was at Florida State, we knew with just about every kid we got out of Georgia that he was tough, that he could compete, and that he was well coached. There’s a talent base in Georgia, and a bunch of high school coaches doing an awesome job preparing them for our type of program.”

Tech fans like to talk about how horrible UGA’s defense is and yet they use the fact that they beat us by 3 to say how great they are. If we suck so bad, why make your claim to fame 45-42. How about when you faced a real good defense like LSU. 38-3?
Huh?

“I am suprised you could count that high but i know UGA defense lost count of how many points it gave up the last 5 games of the season.”
I didn’t lose count. We gave up two fewer points than Georgia Tech’s absolutely laughable defense gave up in its final 5 games. Georgia Tech gave up 32 points per game in its final 5 games and went a mediocre 3-2. Lets make some rings to celebrate!!!! Georgia Tech is on a roll!!!!
Good grief.

GT has to recruit Georgia because they are just a regional program. While UGA can recruit Georgia but also get kids from all over the country because they are a national program. Its really pretty simple

Greg,
I guess you were reading your English grammar during the first half of 31-0. Don’t be such a punk.

HEY RAMBLE ON, still waiting on those CHICK-FIL-A Bowl rings you nerd!
It’s quite sad to watch you post, rant, rave and make some sort of “cool smart a**” comment or insult directed at UGA. We (blog regulars) know the TRUTH…UGA owns your SIMPLE mind. You do not represent the greater majority of level headed Tech Fans, you are part of the lunatic FRINGE who are more concerned with UGA than with your own program…GT. Like I’ve been saying, UGA owns your SIMPLE mind, RAMBLE ON, so please, carry on spew some more venom and vitrol toward UGA, it’s quite entertaining…and SAD!

Tech fans are very excited about beating Georgia for the first time in many years. Georgia fans act the same way when they beat Florida once in a while. And Georgia fans thought the Florida series was finally turned around with the end-zone dance and the victory in 2007. I can remember all the hope inside the program and on the blogs.
Truth is folks, one game does not change a series. Florida was pi$$ed about losing that game and felt disrespected. So in 2008, they beat the tar out of us and took time outs to rub it in our face.
So tech, be careful all this trash talking and confidence doesn’t come back to bite you like it did us. Georgia coaches, players, and fans have circled this game on their calender and have very similar feelings to the Gators before they waxed our a$$es in Jacksonville. Taking the hedges and making rings “ring” any bells with you guys?
I won’t be surprised if Georgia does the same thing to Tech that Florida did to Georgia. Just be careful on the trash you talk. We will remind you of it if we return the favor this year. And it won’t be pretty, polite, or classy. You are setting yourselves up big time just like we did.

Hey bubba, i bet you didn’t even go to college much less UGA. I am suprised you could count that high but i know UGA defense lost count of how many points it gave up the last 5 games of the season. I think times are changing in this rivalry. Don’t forget that UGA was ranked #1 preseason and like they alway do, they don’t live up to the hype. Lost at home on senior day with all those studs on offense to a supposedly “bad” GT team. Who would of thought and don’t be supprised if UGA only wins 7 or 8 games next year. Go Jackets!

Ramble On, back off the caffine the rest of the day, you are getting out of control and your thought process is not rational this day. Ga. State stealing UGA recruits, man, that is too funny. Oh, while we are at it, why do you consistently criticize the intelligence of UGA signees or players, when you have no idea of what you speak.”Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones”.
Georgia mutt and proud of it!!
