Building a fence around Georgia

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson hinted that next year’s recruiting class may be entirely comprised of prospects from the state of Georgia. Last month, the Jackets signed 14 in-state players, the largest haul since 1992.

“The state is very important,” Johnson said. “We wanted to try to make an emphasis on that, and we have. There’s a chance we may take everybody in-state this year [with our 2010 scholarships]. We may take them all from Georgia.”

Georgia Tech expects to sign between 12-15 players next year, and already has its first commitment with Collins Hill tailback Charles Perkins. “I think there’s a lot of good players in Georgia, there’s some great high school coaches, and football is important,” Johnson said. “We’re one of the two bigger in-state schools and we need to make sure that we are very thorough here.”

“Now does that mean we won’t go outside? No. But if we are going outside of the state, those guys need to be remarkably better than the guys we can find in the state. As long as we can find guys with what we need academically in the state, there is no use to bypass them for somebody else. Having said that, I think that you really, really want to also concentrate on the contiguous states that are touching Georgia. We’re just as close to some parts of South Carolina or Alabama as we are to parts of Georgia. Those states I consider to be a one little hub. What I’m talking about is that it doesn’t make sense for us to be in Ohio, Pennslyvania, or California, or Texas trying to make a living, when we have good players here.”

Meanwhile, UGA coach Mark Richt said homegrown talent has always been the No. 1 priority. The Bulldogs landed 11 players from the Peach State last month. “The state of Georgia will always be the hub of our recruiting. We’re 69-percent Georgia kids on our roster, and that’s part of the reason I took this job,” Richt said. “There are great players in this state. Every once in a while, an out-of-state player gets involved, but they have to be pretty special. We’re not going to another state to find a No. 2. We’re looking for No. 1’s there.”

“We’re fortunate to play well over the last few years where we do generate interest from outside of the state. When Matthew Stafford [from Texas] or Knowshon Moreno [New Jersey] are interested, you’ve got to recruit them. The thing about A.J. Green [South Carolina] and some kids from North Carolina, it’s not quite the state of Georgia, but it’s within striking distance. A lot of those kids are not awful far away.”

“But we absolutely love the state of Georgia. When I was at Florida State, we knew with just about every kid we got out of Georgia that he was tough, that he could compete, and that he was well coached. There’s a talent base in Georgia, and a bunch of high school coaches doing an awesome job preparing them for our type of program.”

To whoever referred to the three vacated games in the Tech – UGAG series, if I am not mistaken, those vacated games were restored after appeal. But even if they were not, that does NOT mean that UGAG has 3 more wins in the series; a vacated game means essentially that no game was played. As far as stadium comparisons go, wtf cares? Obiously none of y’all remember the days when Tech’s stadium was considerably larger than Sanford stadium and always sold out. Nobody went to Athens before Dooley came, and on several occasions the mutts rented out Grant Field for a double header with Tech in Atlanta. That last happened in 1961. Yes, those are days long gone by, but tides do turn (no reference to Bama), and fortunes do change. And the past several years of Tech – UGAG games are no more relevant to today than the stadiums of the past are. Any sane and objective fan of college football can see that CPJ is one helluva coach, and his chances for success in Atlanta are very very good. One game in a series does not redefine the entire series, but it sure does provide a lot of insight into the quality of coaching and play, and what was seen in Sanford Stadium last November does not bode well for the mutts. THWG !!!

1 Maybe a great Georgia born recruit would be more likely to stay for 4 years than one from TX or NJ. Those guys were great, but a multi-generational Georgian might have let alma mater matter more than money.

2 “you really, really want to also concentrate on the contigious states that are touching Georgia” Don’t know what “contigious” means, but he could have just said “contiguous” and omitted “”that are touching Georgia”

The State of Georgia has been bleeding talent for too many years. Programs like Clemson, Auburn, Tennessee and Alabama have been feeding in Georgia for years. Why? Because there is a lot of well-coached talent in this State Having two programs rising in prominence and competing for recruits will only improve both programs catches. Quality prospects in this State would have little reason to look elsewhere.

The rise of GT’s program will be a very good thing for UGA. Let the rivalry thrive and watch the entire State of Georgia move up the ranks of college football.

I am getting nailed to the wall today!! Yes Bama did screw up in Memphis because of a stupid and
drunken fan who tried to buy Albert Means. Fulmer and the SEC AD Roy Cramer tried to get Bama
the death penalty from the NCAA. UcheaT and several others SEC schools were in the buy out for Means also. To the other blogger saying that i was calling the kettle black when i refer to UcheaT
as cheaters, i stand correct that UcheaT DOES NOT have the SEC AD COVERING UP FOR UT anymore and the AUBURN TIGERS LEAD IN NCAA LEGAL TROUBLE FOLLOWED BY THE GEORGIA BULLDOGS. UcheaT HAS REPORTED 3 MINOR PROBLEMS CAUSED BY BOY BLUNDER!! ROLL TIDE!!!

gadawgs…that’s some serious, and I mean serious rationalization. Richt told Hill to go to GT….LMAO.

I bet Richt told Stafford to throw that interception to Burnett to keep it close because he is St. Richt and he didn’t want to run the score up?

give me a break.

Get use to losing to GT and hope Ga. State doesn’t start stealing your 4-5 star recruits that can’t read.

Are these nerds really hanging their hat on Stephen Hill. REALLY? Bless his heart but that guy wouldn’t have seen the field for two years minimum at Georgia. I would rather have an out of state guy like Marlon Brown anyway.

Speak for yourself Joshua…we get enough grief on these boards from the Mutts, we don’t need to take shots at each other….forgive me for showing some enthusiasm and confidence in our Coach….if you want to labor under false modesty and low expectations then have at it, but I expect greatness and I believe that is what CPJ embodies.
