Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson hinted that next year’s recruiting class may be entirely comprised of prospects from the state of Georgia. Last month, the Jackets signed 14 in-state players, the largest haul since 1992.
“The state is very important,” Johnson said. “We wanted to try to make an emphasis on that, and we have. There’s a chance we may take everybody in-state this year [with our 2010 scholarships]. We may take them all from Georgia.”
Georgia Tech expects to sign between 12-15 players next year, and already has its first commitment with Collins Hill tailback Charles Perkins. “I think there’s a lot of good players in Georgia, there’s some great high school coaches, and football is important,” Johnson said. “We’re one of the two bigger in-state schools and we need to make sure that we are very thorough here.”
“Now does that mean we won’t go outside? No. But if we are going outside of the state, those guys need to be remarkably better than the guys we can find in the state. As long as we can find guys with what we need academically in the state, there is no use to bypass them for somebody else. Having said that, I think that you really, really want to also concentrate on the contiguous states that are touching Georgia. We’re just as close to some parts of South Carolina or Alabama as we are to parts of Georgia. Those states I consider to be a one little hub. What I’m talking about is that it doesn’t make sense for us to be in Ohio, Pennslyvania, or California, or Texas trying to make a living, when we have good players here.”
Meanwhile, UGA coach Mark Richt said homegrown talent has always been the No. 1 priority. The Bulldogs landed 11 players from the Peach State last month. “The state of Georgia will always be the hub of our recruiting. We’re 69-percent Georgia kids on our roster, and that’s part of the reason I took this job,” Richt said. “There are great players in this state. Every once in a while, an out-of-state player gets involved, but they have to be pretty special. We’re not going to another state to find a No. 2. We’re looking for No. 1’s there.”
“We’re fortunate to play well over the last few years where we do generate interest from outside of the state. When Matthew Stafford [from Texas] or Knowshon Moreno [New Jersey] are interested, you’ve got to recruit them. The thing about A.J. Green [South Carolina] and some kids from North Carolina, it’s not quite the state of Georgia, but it’s within striking distance. A lot of those kids are not awful far away.”
“But we absolutely love the state of Georgia. When I was at Florida State, we knew with just about every kid we got out of Georgia that he was tough, that he could compete, and that he was well coached. There’s a talent base in Georgia, and a bunch of high school coaches doing an awesome job preparing them for our type of program.”

Hey Ramble On
You are delirious if you think CPJ has taken over the state. Your two points were Exhibit 1: 45-42. You need to win more than one time in 8 years to claim superiority. Don’t see it happening. Exhibit 2: Stephen Hill. Are you kidding me. Stephen Hill was going to commit to UGA all the way up until the night before when CMR advised him that it would better serve him to sign with Tech. Why because Marlon Brown had called coach and told him he was coming to Athens. Stephen Hill was a backup plan in case Brown did not commit. We got the player we wanted. Not a slight to Mr. Hill as he is a fine player and from what I can see a good kid but he would not play at UGA with the receivers we have and he knew it. The players that you signed from GA are good but not great as is your coach. He is good not great. I sincerely hope he does bring Tech back to “prominence”. As a matter of fact I hope you guys are undefeated heading into our game because it will be priceless to watch you get your _ _ _ handed to you in front of your 15,000 rabid fans and to watch you throw your pocket protectors down in disgust.

Just going by pure numbers, there are way too many D-1 players in GA for UGA and Tech to sign…thus, they go to schools out of state. Both hometown teams always get there share, but sometimes teams like UT or Clemson get the ones who would rather leave their hometowns. Not everyone likes to stay in the same place all their lives, except for Bamafan who chooses time and time again to take the pot calling the kettle black route when he refers to UT as cheaters…look in the mirror next time you are wearing a roll tide shirt and then you will see the true cheaters name, which was proven in court on more than one occasion.

I’m pretty sure “Coach Dodd” above was a UGA fan trying to make Tech fans look stupid. Nice try, Tech fans are realists. Yes, we’ll be in the hunt for National Championships again soon, but our stadium is small and our crowds are more old than they are loud.
And the NFL isn’t likely to be adopting the triple option anytime soon.
We don’t care – college ball is college ball and CPJ and the Jackets are building on the success of this year and moving forward. Our 4 National Championships will be 5 before UGA gets #3.

What is not stated in this article, which I believe was mentioned by a poster yesterday and is common knowledge among GT insiders, is that CPJ already has several secret commits in the stable, including RB Mack Brown. I also have it on authority that the DL from Warner Robins (Whitaker) has privately committed as well. Let’s face it, CPJ is slowly putting the clamps down on the state and relegating CMR to having to chase 2 star recruits in other states, while getting embarrassed in state.

Reality again. Georgia as a state has always had top tier talent. You can go back in history to find great ones from the peach state. It should be a no brainer, but some of the carpetbaggers just don’t get it.
I hope tech wins again this year so the game becomes a rivalry again. I remember the fight on Thanksgiving a few years back. My buddy and I were running into the stadium to see it unfold. Yeah, we’re from Atlanta, better late than never right. Can’t wait to get going.

These fleabags are pathetic…CPJ has taken over the State. Exhibit 1: 45-42, Exhibit 2 Stephen Hill.
Maybe if ya’ll get a Tittley Winks team, ya’ll could beat GT in something.
