Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson hinted that next year’s recruiting class may be entirely comprised of prospects from the state of Georgia. Last month, the Jackets signed 14 in-state players, the largest haul since 1992.
“The state is very important,” Johnson said. “We wanted to try to make an emphasis on that, and we have. There’s a chance we may take everybody in-state this year [with our 2010 scholarships]. We may take them all from Georgia.”
Georgia Tech expects to sign between 12-15 players next year, and already has its first commitment with Collins Hill tailback Charles Perkins. “I think there’s a lot of good players in Georgia, there’s some great high school coaches, and football is important,” Johnson said. “We’re one of the two bigger in-state schools and we need to make sure that we are very thorough here.”
“Now does that mean we won’t go outside? No. But if we are going outside of the state, those guys need to be remarkably better than the guys we can find in the state. As long as we can find guys with what we need academically in the state, there is no use to bypass them for somebody else. Having said that, I think that you really, really want to also concentrate on the contiguous states that are touching Georgia. We’re just as close to some parts of South Carolina or Alabama as we are to parts of Georgia. Those states I consider to be a one little hub. What I’m talking about is that it doesn’t make sense for us to be in Ohio, Pennslyvania, or California, or Texas trying to make a living, when we have good players here.”
Meanwhile, UGA coach Mark Richt said homegrown talent has always been the No. 1 priority. The Bulldogs landed 11 players from the Peach State last month. “The state of Georgia will always be the hub of our recruiting. We’re 69-percent Georgia kids on our roster, and that’s part of the reason I took this job,” Richt said. “There are great players in this state. Every once in a while, an out-of-state player gets involved, but they have to be pretty special. We’re not going to another state to find a No. 2. We’re looking for No. 1’s there.”
“We’re fortunate to play well over the last few years where we do generate interest from outside of the state. When Matthew Stafford [from Texas] or Knowshon Moreno [New Jersey] are interested, you’ve got to recruit them. The thing about A.J. Green [South Carolina] and some kids from North Carolina, it’s not quite the state of Georgia, but it’s within striking distance. A lot of those kids are not awful far away.”
“But we absolutely love the state of Georgia. When I was at Florida State, we knew with just about every kid we got out of Georgia that he was tough, that he could compete, and that he was well coached. There’s a talent base in Georgia, and a bunch of high school coaches doing an awesome job preparing them for our type of program.”

UGA has won 14 out of the last 18, 23 out of last 31, 35 out of last 50…shall I continue (oh 7 out of last 8). Plus 3 of those wins in the last 50 years were “vacated”, so actually Tech’s record is even lousier than it appears (which is REALLY lousy).
Finally, the overall record is, 59-37-5…OUCH, now I understand why all of the Nerd Nation has such ____ envy when it comes to UGA!!

Very funny Coach Dodd, you described UGA well. I think that there are plenty of talented players in the state of Georgia for UGA and GT to get the players that they want and compete for conference championships. Approx. 150 football players signed D1 scholarships. This leaves about another 100 to be signed by non-Georgia schools. I graduated from UGA but felt that a strong GT program only makes UGA better. The increase competition makes one work harder. I want GT to push UGA to higher heights.
As for Coach Johnson, I felt that he was a great coach at GSU and would do a good, if not great job at GT.
However, I still prefer Coach Richt over anybody else in the ACC or SEC.

I think it is imperative that Georgia high school students stay in the state of Georgia – wherever that might be! http://www.wedgeorgia.com

Tech stinks. They know it. Let them enjoy their 45-42 Rings that they got this year! Because, they know they will NEVER have a chance to get any kind of true CHAMPIONSHIP ring!
What a joke the whole Nerd Nation is, if they only knew how EVVERYONE outside of there little circle viewed them. Oh well, it is more fun for the rest of us if they don’t.

CD, that crap was funny…good job of pretending you were serious. I’m still laughing. Good job of using all the strengths that UGA show and then claim them as your own.
Most historic, LOUDEST and most INTIMIDATING stadiums in the land, LOL, stop it. Hmmm, 92,000 and sold out EVERY game versus 45,000 of which 25,000 show up for a game. Other than UGA, name the last game that was sold out on the plains.
Yeah, the offense that will be adopted in the NFL, yep, in the 1940’s.
I do believe UGA in second in the nation behind Miami (by one player) for most players in the NFL.
A coach with standards? Yeah a commitment is a commitment (unless you are committed to another school and want to commit to us) see **Stephen Hill** as exhibit A.

Some of these posters are delusional…National Championships are the norm? Are you kidding me? Anyway, I am fan of Georgia high school football and I’m glad that Tech realizes the value in recruiting local. If CPJ can return Tech to national relevance with mostly GA players it can only help to raise this state’s stature in the nations eyes (ala Florida). As y’all know CMR has always emphasized the great talent from Georgia. Little known fact…The state of Georgia had the fourth most D1 signees this year, behind Texas, Florida, and Cali. We don’t get the national attention b/c Tech hasn’t been a consistent winner. Maybe Johnson can lead them to some consistent ACC championship games, then maybe our rivalry will be must see t.v. nationallly. Go Dawgs!

Coach CPJ is really in a mode whereby he is hand selecting who he wants, rather than CMR who is hoping to land what he can, but will likely miss on most (see Stephen Hill as exhibit A). The recruits of Georgia have a very basic decision before them, they can go to a school in which National Championships will be the norm, play in one of the most historic, loudest and most intimidating stadiums in the land, play in an explosive offense that is likely to be adopted by the NFL, all while playing for a coach who is the standard by which all others are measured. If a recruit values those key elements, they can only make one choice and that will be to play on The Flats.

Bamafan,
Well done! Go to Alabama and learn you some English. That there / their use is always tricky for those west of Georgia.

The crimson tide is trying to move in the state of Georgia this year. Saban and company has offered
a lot of scholarships to players in the greater Atlanta area this year. Coach Richt and Rodney Garner
have done a great job of closing the borders in the state. Auburn and Clemson have all ways recruited
Georgia heavy for good football players and UcheaT has got there share of players also. I am happy
that Saban is recruiting in Georgia because the state of Alabama football recruits for 2010 are down this year and the state of Georgia is loaded with talented football players!! GO BAMA ROLL TIDE!!

Hey Bumble Buzzard, Our type of program has won 7 of the last 8 games against the Ghetto Yech Trade School. Which would you rather have, 45 – 42 or 7 out of 8? Even someone from the Ghetto can answer that.
