What will Greg Reid do? The state awaits Tuesday night

Lowndes DB Greg Reid

Lowndes DB Greg Reid

What will Greg Reid do on Tuesday night?

The state and (gulp) nation awaits, as Reid has transformed himself into arguably the county’s “hottest” college football prospect over the last month.

Reid, the AJC’s Player of the Year, will choose between Alabama, Florida State and Georgia between 6-8 p.m. on a local radio station that also broadcasts over the Internet.

Love him or hate him, Reid is nothing short of greatness on the football field. He is considered the rarest of prospects, someone who has the potential to improve a college team’s football fortunes from the very moment he arrives on campus. What will Greg Reid do?

The 5-foot-8 Reid had a dominating senior season at Lowndes High. If that wasn’t convincing enough, he played in Georgia’s North-South all-star classic and scored the game’s only two touchdowns on punt returns of 89 and 77 yards. If more proof was needed, Reid won MVP honors with two interceptions in the ESPN-televised Under Armour game, rocketing his Q rating through the roof.

What will Greg Reid do? Let’s give a quick breakdown of the three finalists:

ALABAMA: All Alabama had to do was get Greg on campus, which was quite a task. He was initially supposed to go on Jan. 9, but then switched to Florida State. Greg then agreed to visit Alabama on Jan. 23, but nearly backed out at the last minute for Tennessee. However, once Reid made it to Tuscaloosa, Ala., he said he was impressed with the tough talk and NFL background of Alabama coach Nick Saban.

FLORIDA STATE: Several members of Reid’s family want him to play closer to home, and Tallahassee is only 85 miles away. However; it appears that Greg’s biggest allure to Florida State is an opportunity to compete immediately for a starting position, as the team lacks depth at defensive back.

GEORGIA: There are so many things in favor of the Bulldogs, most notably that Reid told several prospects committed to Georgia that he will be joining them (then again, he could’ve told that to Alabama and FSU players, too). What also helped Georgia with Reid was the enormous positive reaction it generated throughout the South Georgia area when he said he planned to visit the Bulldogs. He likes UGA coach Mark Richt, and thinks he can be a calming influence on his life. Reid also thinks he has a shot at playing early for the Bulldogs.

What will Greg Reid do? What’s your pick? Post below and let’s see if you’re correct.

He is going to choose the team that he can get on the field as soon as possible. Think he will play with Demps at FSU. But who knows. After reading that he already told several of his good friends who just happen to be UGA prospects that he’s coming to join them in Athens, well that sounds pretty convincing too. So, i just wish him luck where ever he goes.

Hope he chooses UGA but wherever he goes I wish him well. UGA has some great recruits committed and Greg would be an outstanding addition. He and Branden would be the best in the nation as a pair of cover corners. Now if the Tech and Gator trash talkers will just stay off this blog it will be a great day.

I think Reid will have trouble qualifying academically to play anywhere this year. He will probably choose FSU in the long run..they are not as deep and when he does get in school he will be able to play sooner.

I think this guy will be in a Georgia uniform next year if he qualifies. He has already been told that the jersey number 24 will be his when he gets here and the chance to stick it to Florida for at least three years will be very inticing. Can you imiagine he and Branden Smith lock down corners at Georgia for at least three years. They also do ther things like return kicks, something Georgia needs badly.

He is going Florida State…he seems to like the publicity and why would he go to 1) Georgia who has Branden Smith already commited and 2) Alabama who pretty much has Dre Kirkpatrick? It makes sense that he would go to Florida State because it is closer to home and his teammate Gerald Demps is going to Florida State.

He has a chance to form one of the best corner tandems in the country with Brandon Smith. SEC footbal has more national exposure so it should be UGA or Bama. I would hope it would be UGA being a Georgia boy but best to him on whatever he does.

Actually funny about the Georgia thing, he didn’t like athens that much and narrowed it down to FSU and Bama after this past weekend. What will bring him to Tuscaloosa is the opportunity to play for Nick Saban as well as the chance to win a national championship. Dre Kirkpatrick and Greg Reid as the corners in two years sounds pretty unbelievable to me.

Greg Reid should end up a Valdosta State at least he might have the grades to get into that school. VSU is a power house in their division and he would proably fit in just perfectly. He will be close to all those loving Lowndes fans. I am just glad he graduating if it happens. No more hearing about him around the highschool games. Excellent player and wished he would have stayed a Gator. That said, not sure he will be playing anywhere other than Hargrave or similar. Distractions caused by his decommit and visits to other schools have most likely damaged his academic chances to qualify at UGA or FSU.

What is so great about this guy? He is 5′8, doesn’t have top flight speed and has horrible grades and test scores. He backed out of his commitment to Florida because, in his own words, he wouldn’t have a chance to play early. So he is short, slow, stupid, and not good enough to get on the field at Florida and Bama and UGA and falling all over themselves to get him? Let him go to FSU. He can excel in the ACC with the Criminoles.

I’m thinking tossup between FSU and UGA. Bama is too far away even though he had a great visit. Plus we are expected to get the number 1 corner in the nation in Dre Kirkpatrick so I would find it difficult to believe Reid would want to compete with Dre for playing time. Dre is the lockdown corner that we truly want and will probably get.

Brandon, Everyone has their share kids that turn out to be thugs. The ? is do you make exscuses for them and keep them around or do you get rid of them. We had 2 at Bama under Saban and he booted them the second they got charged. There was no waiting to see if they were innocent, no letting it go through the judicial system first, etc. Saban booted the thugs Jimmy and Jeremy the second he found out they were arrested. It aint gonna be tolerated under Saban.

It sounds like Reid has some character issues, & may have trouble staying eligible.

Then as a Tech fan, he should fit in very nicely at UGA, another thug to go get arrested. And he won’t have to worry about being eligible, they make sure that if he’s breathing he passes his classes whether he actually goes to them or not.

He would recieve a great education and have great coaches at any of the three schools. This kid is 18 though so he is going to go where it is most comfortable for him. That will be FSU were his cousin plays and is the closet to home. I wish though that he would pick Alabama though.

Thug??? What is a thug? Is a thug a young black male who is trying to make something for himself. If thats the case, then yes Alabama has been built of them, so to has FSU and UGA have all been built off them. 95% of the people who complain about the grades issue obviously doesnt understand the situation. If he was white with the same history and athletic ability even Harvard would be trying to find a way to get this kid in. I am teacher myself who unlike most of the people on this site actually went through the recruiting process and understand that the majority of high school students today have other things on their mind thier first two years in high school other than making good grades. Ive seen people critisize this kid for youthful transgressions that many high school students make. Look at the US poster child Micheal Phelps. He just got caught up in a drug photo. Not allegedly but he actually got photographed and you mean to tell me that colleges all over the country wouldnt be lined up right now to sign this kid to their university. Let Reid grow up or get to know him and understand his life before you critisize the decions that he has made in it. And for those who doubt his ability, I have seen film of every high school game he has played and believe me when I tell you that he can cover any guy in the country. I think he will end up at FSU. HE has the potential to be one of the best corners to ever play at Florida State. People say he is 5′8″ but look at Tony Carter. The lack of size didnt hurt his career at FSU and Reid has the potential to be better. If he comes to FSU, he will start as a freshman.

It is funny to me how Tech fans speak as if high profile players on their team are not granted the same leniency as other players ‘might’ receive at UGA or elsewhere. I mean, come on, that’s just silly.

I think Reid would excel as a player and an individual by just being around the players and coaches at UGA. Not to say BAMA and FSU, or even UF, are bad environments. But, considering his background, I think CMR along with the older players on the team would offer Reid great leadership.

Really cool these FSU fans know what the NCAA will do to FSU even before the school or the NCAA rules committee knows. The only thing that could possibly keep FSU off probation is the seniority and respect of Bobby Bowden. They just don’t want the legendary Bowden to go out with his team on probation. Had some school like Nebraska, WVU, Virginia, etc.,committed the level of violations perpetrated by FSU they would already be on probation. Anyone that asserts to know what the NCAA will do is simply blowing smoke. The recent 3rd arrest of one of the FSU starters doesn’t help though. A starter with his 3rd arrest in 3 years and second DUI. Sounds like they run it pretty loose there.

Being a Gator, and hating FSU football, I must say your comments about the stadium are beyond stupid. The Doak is a beautiful football stadium, and the FSU campus is equally beautiful. And, yes, FSU educates and puts out some of the best teachers in the country…and we cetainly need “best” teachers today with the highly disrespectful and “give it to me, I don’t want to earn it” type of kids coming into schools today.

you “adults” need to stop and think BEFORE you write. to call someone a “thug, stupid, short, slow, and not good enough to compete” shows just how idiotic some of you adults are.

FSU -aka- the “criminoles”- are having a bad spurt that normally bobby would have never let happen.

UGA spells dogs “DAWGS” so there goes that educational system.

then you have UF that says “greg isnt a man of his word”—thats funny coming from a school that hired a coach in the middle of his contract after having promised the kids at utah he would be there. guess we know what meyers “word” is good for then huh? to claim that the gators were the “only school to recruit him the last 2 years was absurd— just like a purty engaged bride thats not married yet—just cause she isnt being pursued in public doesnt mean she isnt wanted by someone else- just means theyre waiting in the shadows.

attack a school people, not a young man trying to make a important life decision. seems they are some true “haters” (using that word make me a thug also?) out there.

Wally- Does that include UF’s record against UGA in the 70’s and 80’s? I am pretty sure before UF’s current run of 16-3, UGA was 15-5 over the previous 20 year span. Don’t see how that was dominant by anybody but UGA. Why don’t you ask SOS how good they played us before he took over as the head coach? I am sure that ‘66 loss still stings a bit. Look, you have been dominant since the early 90’s. I admit it, just like any of the other UGA fans I discuss football with on a daily basis. Just enjoy your program, which I believe is one of the best in the country, and let us try an build ours to the same level so we can enjoy the game each and every year.

The UGAY FAGS hates us because we beat that ass all the time!!!

I’ll take a timeout to think about it.

Every hates UGA because they always choke. See last College World Series.

Is UGA claiming a National Title since they were preseason #1?

Hey Toni…a little hint for you…all national championships are “made up”. But, why quibble? Let’s see what the NCAA’s site has to say on the matter shall we? I count 17…sure not all of them are “legit”…but then NONE of them really are. Funny I don’t see Florida on there much…made up or otherwise.

TonytheGator

February 3rd, 2009

Yeah when Aaron Murray gets his ass kicked by the Gators year end and year out. Richt couldn’t coach flag football. Urban hates UGAY and who doesn’t, and he’s 100 times better than that fake coach you got. Richt’s been at UGAY almost 10 years, and still is a choke artist.

Why does Athens have so many gay bars? BECAUSE ATHENS SUCKS!!!!

If Richt tried to improve his coaching as much as he works on his tan or trying to keep his hair, he’d be unbeatable.

I think it’s funny that UGAY has a METROSEXUAL for a head coach!!

Well losers, I’ll just leave laughing at another let down for the puppies!!

Can’t blame Reid. Would you want to waste your eligibility playing for CWM? Reid would rather play for the Senile Seminole than that incompetent bastard Martinez.

When CWM fails he blames his players. Poor CWM can still trot out that lame excuse next year. Dogs can’t close. They start fast but never get the last minute coup. UGA will have unused scholarships this year. Which is pretty damn sad.

Not sure Reid will qualify but that doesn’t mean we didn’t want/need him. Look for the dawgs to go 0-for tomorrow on undecideds.

Agree with Truth. Anybody who saw us play D this year wouldn’t want any part of CWM. Also agree that the dogs wiff big tomorrow. Dawg news has been an uninterrupted string of bad news lately (trying to live of the Cap 1 bowl win is getting a bit sad).

Why would anyone in their right mind pick FSU? They are quickly becoming irrelevant as a program and Bowden should’ve been gone a long time ago. How many 10 win seasons for FSU since 2001….that would be 1. In the ACC no less. How many 10 win seasons for Georgia since ‘01…6. I can understand choosing Alabama or even Florida over Georgia, but why go to a washed up, soon to be sanctioned program?

scooby doobie doo

that o for tomorrow doesn’t sound promising but I will admit I thought Reid was the kickoff to good things and now it looks the opposite. I guess having a few un used schollys will help some walkons that will never make the field.

Bad UGA Signing Day

Richt needs to win the big one

February 3rd, 2009

Richt needs this class to be a big one and a class that produces something on the field. Not just highly rated coming in, no titles while at UGA and then on to the NFL. What happens to all the high level recruits while they are at Georgia?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHY CANT RICHT COACH THEM Up?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And to the annoying Gaytor: there’s this other blogster on a nole blog I always go to that has the same dispicible excuse for a life that he has to go bash teams on other blogs. I truly do fell sorry for you. Maybe you and this other guy can hook up and fantasize about Tim Tebow together. All the best, loser.

A 5′ 8″ DB being great in college? Call me a skeptic, but… actually no. It simply is not going to happen. A RB, maybe. But not a DB. He’ll be a great roleplayer, and we’ll completely forget who he was a few years from now.

All you people on here calling Greg a thug and dumb and all those other terrible things need to get a life. None of you even know him because if you did, you wouldn’t be saying those things. Instead of encouraging our youth, you are on this blog with all of your negativity. All of us have done somethings in our younger days that we wish we hadn’t, so he who is without sin, cast the first stone. Greg Reid is a fine young man and an outstanding athlete. Don’t let the 5′8″ fool you. Just ask some of the 6′5″ and above receivers he’s intercepted or broken up passes from. I don’t know who your #1 cornerback is, but where was he during the ESPN Under Armour game when Greg Reid won MVP? So if you don’t have anything encouraging to say, don’t say anything. You don’t know anything about his grades or anything else, so stay off of this blog with your hatred!!!

And, yes, looks like I’m right. He’s a NOLE!
