For any wide receiver recruited by UGA, next year was shaping up to be the opportunity of a lifetime. It was the chance to catch passes from Matthew Stafford, one of college football’s biggest stars and Georgia’s best-ever pro prospect at quarterback.
However, Stafford decided on Wednesday to exit for the NFL, along with Knowshon Moreno. So how do UGA’s top two remaining recruiting targets at wide receiver feel about it?
“I’m happy for him [Stafford], I think he made the right decision,” said Marlon Brown of Memphis, who is deciding between Tennessee, Georgia, Ohio State and LSU.
“I kind of figured that Stafford would go … and why wouldn’t he go if he is projected to be drafted so high?” said former Dacula standout Cameron Kenney. He plays at Garden City Junior College and is mulling over offers from Auburn, UGA, South Carolina and Kansas State. “He did what he felt like he needed to do.”
The more important question is this: How will Stafford’s departure affect how each prospect feels about UGA?
“None at all,” Brown told the AJC on Wednesday night.
“Georgia will always be Georgia,” Kenney said. “I mean, if Stafford and Moreno would’ve stayed, it would have definitely been a good thing. They were great players. But there are more great players behind them at Georgia.”
Wide receiver is the No. 1 remaining recruiting priority for Georgia coach Mark Richt, who publicly vowed that he needed to sign “at least two.” The Bulldogs have a commitment from Rantavious Wooten of Belle Glades, Fla., who is still being pursued by the Florida Gators.
The 6-foot-5 Brown is heavily involved with Georgia, but his chances to signing with the Bulldogs seem to slowly lessening. Brown says has developed a close friendship with Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor. However, most discouraging for Georgia is that there is mounting pressure for Brown to stay local and play for the Volunteers. And Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin has made Brown feel like he’s the No. 1 prospect in the world. After Kiffin was named coach, he immediately caught a flight that same day to meet with Brown.
“Yeah, there’s a lot of people who watched me play football growing up, that would like to see me play for Tennessee,” Brown said. “I hear about Tennessee all day, every day. There would be some unhappy people around here if I left the state to play ball. But I know I’ve got to do what’s best for me and my future. It may be Tennessee, or it may be one of the other schools. I don’t know yet.”
Georgia, perhaps seeing its window of opportunity closing with Brown, will make an in-home visit on Saturday. The Bulldogs will be hoping to regain the early momentum they had with Brown.
Meanwhile, Kenney told the AJC that he has scheduled his official visit with UGA for Jan. 23. Wooten could not be reached for comment.

For those of you who don’t like the writers at the AJC or the paper itself, just don’t read it. It amazes me when critics that think they know more than any journalists continue to read their articles and whine aimlessly. I am sure the writers do their best to be accurate but they are human and thus not perfect.

Michael: Coach Richt once said Stafford was the most talented qb he ever coached meaning Staff has tremendous “potential”. Staff had many forgetable performances(Most of the first half of the Capitol One Bowl) so how can he be “Georgia’s Best Ever” pro prospect. Have you forgotten NFL record holder Fran Tarkenton or is that too far back in time for you?

Centanni…Maybe you should know the facts before piping in. Brown is extemely close with Pryor that was made evident by him while he was in Athens.

Of the remaining slots, any 3 or 4 of the following would be great: Reid, Massie, Brown, Carroll, Charles, Bowman, Kenney, or any others the UGA coaches come up with as they always seem to do a good job

Buddy El: Good point about Fran Tarkenton. I thought about Fran before posting that. Fran was a great college player, led UGA to 1959 SEC championship. But he was a third-round pick. Not only is Stafford projected to be a first-rounder, he also could be THE No. 1 pick of the draft. Stafford is clearly the better NFL “prospect.” Will Stafford be the better NFL “player”? Highly doubtful, and that’s nothing against Stafford in particular, but also any QB coming out of college. Tarkenton is an NFL legend, Hall of Famer, etc.

Tarkenton went to a new franchise in Minnesota and Stafford may well go to a worse situation if Detroit gets him. My point was that if Stafford does not show consistancy to go with all that talent he may end up as a career backup. Consistancy is huge factor and Staff had three years to demonstrate some but in his final UGA game was far from consistant.Tarkenton was consistant. No big deal. I just love to nitpick such statements.

Stafford was a GOOD QB..so was Greenie, DJ, and others..Joe will be too..Great takes a four year stint..a Dawg attitude..and consistentcy..Matt had some, not all, of this. We have a good group of QBs waiting to play Georgia football. Hopefully, they can be coached up in a short time..the supporting cast will be the key. A new philosophy and attitude from the coaching staff will go a long way. GO DAWGS IN 09!

Stafford has been praised since before he ever came to UGA> He leaves having accomplished nothing more than being the most arrogant QB for the DAWGS in decades. People in Athens tell me he was rude and started fights in bars and left and that the police were looking for an excuse to throw him in the slammer at the behest of bar owners. Good riddance to a Texas transplant that was never either a Georgian or a Dawg.
