Where does Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game go from here?

You kiddin’ me? Georgia and Georgia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game? Surely, they jest.

I swear I heard it being bandied about on one of those sports radio shows the other morning. Just the thought of Georgia and Georgia Tech doing their annual conflict any place but on campus is a serious case of mental illness. In the first place, the whole city of Athens would rise up in rebellion, especially the merchants and the chamber of commerce.
They already miss out on the stimulus they might have if Jacksonville hadn’t monopolized the Florida game. And that one is locked in, as is the Texas-Oklahoma game in Dallas. Not only that, but the Georgia-Georgia Tech game is on campus. It ain’t budging.

They played once at old Ponce de Leon, the baseball park. Right now, though, let Atlanta Sports Council have its day, and let the city feast on these Alabama and Virginia Tech guests who feed our municipal coffers, and blessings be to Gary Stokan and his industrious confreres. What this amounts to is opening the season with a bowl game, and since the Chick-fil-A crowd can’t crash the BCS monopoly, here’s to the home crowd!

Another issue has risen on the scene, at the suggestion of Grant Teaff, president of the American Football Coaches Association. Dear Grant, a fine Christian gentleman, has proposed that all college teams take time to shake hands before they kick off. In other words, establish good fellowship before the trash-talking and the butt-kicking begins. Teaff’s idea has been supported by the coaches association, but it seems that there are some who want no part of such a show of softness at such a delicate time.

From where I sit, the idea has some Christian merit, but on the other hand, these kids didn’t come to the stadium to promote peace. After the game, yeah. Great idea. Some players shake hands already after the game, but that’s purely individual. I like that. But to do it under orders, like boxers who touch gloves, then are told to come out fighting, that doesn’t sell with me.

In passing, let me remind you of a tragic incident in Grant Teaff’s life. He was coach of a Texas team whose plane crashed on take-off after a game in Ohio. Some of his players were killed. Several passengers were injured, including Teaff himself. And while that has no bearing on this proposal, this might give you an indication of the origin of the suggestion.

Just where the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game goes from here, none of us can be sure. Gary Stokan has seeded ground for a preseason attraction that might take root. There was once a similar game played in New Jersey, a sort of kick-off classic. I don’t recall just what became of that, but you do know that any team that shows up to play in this Kickoff Game leaves Atlanta with a recruiting advantage. Both Georgia and Georgia Tech might keep that in mind.

SickandTired;

I can’t speak towards UGA, but from GA Tech’s perspective, Paul Johnson didn’t pick his schedule; most of it was made up several years before he come on campus. GA Tech did have to fill in a couple of last minute cancellations and pick up “table scraps” on some occasions, but also picked up Kansas on another.

There was an attempt to play UCLA in the Chick-fil-A Kick Off, but they refused, and Urban Meyer, of Florida has already gone on record of saying he wants no part of GA Tech because he spent quite a while with Paul Johnson when he began to develop his passing version of the spread option.

Insider, I’m real sure that Fla is scared to death of GT. What a pompous statement. The only thing scary about GT is the campus

Why not make it a two-day event. Have an SEC school play an opponent out of the Big 12, Big 10, Pac-10, Big East, Notre Dame, Boise State or BYU. Then on Sunday, have an ACC team play another team from one of those conferences or the three mentioned. Also, you can flip-flop the games every year. Have the SEC play on odd years, the ACC on even years.

GeorgeinBama I do want the Kick off game moved from the Dome. Saban has said it is helping him recruit Ga. and CPJ has said the game c hurts GT and UGA recruiting.

UGA has no reason to play in the Kick Off game other than to keep other teams out. UGA gets plenty of money playing in their bigger stadium.

Move the SECCG and Kick off Classic to Florida, Nasville, or even Charlotte. I don’t care but get them out of Atlanta.

Sanford was built so that UGA would never have to worry about the game being stuck in Atlanta. Further yes Athens or even Bobby Dodd has more atmosphere than the Dome.

Next I am greatly discouraged by the handshake and even more so the flags I saw thrown for hits that while hard were clean. CFB is a violent passion filled sport. It is not church league softball. Let the kids play and get them fired up. The NFL has run me off with their QB protection rules. CFB is the last purely American sport I watch. and is moving in the same direction as the NFL, how sad.

And also,
we don’t want our high school championships played in the dome.
Each school should have the right to play in their own stadiums.
Small towns need the revenue too.

Sam Clemmons, may I remind you that your judging the one that made everything and holds your life in his hands and that this is his property that he does with as he sees fit, you don’t like it if someone tells you what to do with your home do you? Besides a new philosophy was brought to light when the Messiah came. How dare you use a situation in the old testament to make a point about you obviously know nothing about.

Have heard it all now, GT fans thinking they would own UF-funny how someone says that Meyer has gone on record saying he wants no part of GT-funny, never heard Meyer say he was scared of anyone much less GT. I guess winning 2 of 3 last NC’s make you a little hesitant about playing anybody, huh?

Keep it ACC vs SEC

The kick-off game takes what it can get. Isn’t it tough to schedule a game only a year before it is played?

Also, it they don’t do a ACC vs SEC matchup, then they should play UGA or TECH against a PAC-10 or BIG 12 team or ND.

I wonder if they are thinking about a third college DOME game since they sell out so well.

How much is that company paying you to plaster their name?

So, we’re suggesting pitting two top teams from different conferences against one another? Don’t we already do that with the bowl games? The first game of the season is a great idea, too, especially when we don’t even know what our team is like on the field yet.

I wouldn’t mind the Kickoff game branching out to include other conferences and maybe bring Notre Dame in here to face an SEC or ACC school every once in awhile.

i doubt if tech or uga fans actually attend this game, as normally, both teams have games being played on the same day. so there goes the call for a boycott. as for uga’s recruiting disavantage; so be it. if they refuse to play games in atlanta, that’s on them! that may be a reason they’re losing out on so many good recruits, but maybe they prefer their recruits come from j’sonville instead of the atlanta region. esp. since uga alumni hate the families and politics of atlanta players. i don’t understand why uga bothers to recruit atlanta at all! other than, to keep those good players out of other sec schools. supporters always claim, it’s about the money. but, i don’t think alabama lost money in the big picture. they more than make up for that in the long term! i think uga and their supporters are being shortsighted, and selfish on this issue. they would rather the people in j’sonville fla. make money instead of people who drive this entire state economy. serve’s em’ right, so quit crying about percieved recruiting disadvantages!!!!!!

I agree with Don: The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic should alternate showcasing Tech and UGA against an intersectional team from PAC-10, Big-10, Big-12, or Big East.
