Caffé Gio by Giovanni Di Palma opens today

caffegio_logo_colorToday Giovanni Di Palma’s latest spot, Caffé Gio, opens its doors. This sister to Antico Pizza Napoletana and Gio’s Chicken Amalfitano will function as a traditional Neapolitan cafe and gelateria, offering Neapolitan street food for lunch each day.

Menu items will feature the flavors of the Amalfi coast. Look for six panini sandwiches on homemade ciabatta served with chicken soup or salad ($11-13). Caffé Gio will also serve a variety of salads topped with chicken, steak or jumbo grilled prawns ($11-13).

For dessert, the eatery will serve a selection of Neapolitan desserts with Kimbo coffee and espresso. But the highlight will be the 10 original gelato flavors and sorbets crafted in and imported from Bologna, Italy.

Di Palma originally announced that he would partner with Donald Sargent of Morelli’s Gourmet Ice Cream to produce the gelato. Di Palma responded to the change with the statement,

Farm Burger and Morelli’s Gourmet Ice Cream coming to Dunwoody

Exciting news for those of us living outside the Perimeter…

Yesterday, Tomorrow’s News Today announced that Farm Burger and Morelli’s Gourmet Ice Cream are teaming up to expand to Dunwoody.

George Frangos, owner of Farm Burger, confirmed the news. Farm Burger and Morelli’s will move into a spot in the Georgetown Shopping Center off of Chamblee Dunwoody Road. According to Frangos, the two eateries should open close to Labor Day.

The size of the Dunwoody space prompted the FarmBurger/Morelli’s collaboration. Frangos says, “This is a larger restaurant for us, which dictated a partnership.” Frangos connected with Donald Sargent, owner of Morelli’s, through a real estate broker, who became familiar with both parties through their (unsuccessful) airport bidding packages.

You can expect the Dunwoody Farm Burger menu to be similar to that of the Decatur and Buckhead locations. …

Morelli’s scores a vote at Attack of the Killer Tomato Festival


Were you one of the 821 people that attended the Attack of the Killer Tomato Festival last weekend?

During this packed event, hosted by JCT.Kitchen, festival-goers were treated to tomato-centric dishes and cocktails. The event raised almost $40,000 for Georgia Organics.

Atlanta chefs including Ford Fry, Linton Hopkins, Carvel Grant Gould, Steven Satterfield (and many more) were paired with local farms to supply ingredients — tomatoes — for their dishes. Then, they faced the daunting task of preparing close to 900 portions of their tomato creation in two hours. (The festival lasted four hours but most of the food was depleted in two.)

There were six or seven dishes among my top choices, but the one that I’ll remember most (and seek out) is the olive oil and basil ice cream with tomato compote made by Morelli’s Ice Cream. Think of a luxuriously buttery olive-oil ice cream topped with a sweetened-tomato jam evoking the flavors of a sweet bruschetta.

Pie Shop – Buckhead

Owner Mims Bledsoe began working out of a commercial kitchen in Decatur slinging from-scratch pies online. Well, those pies seem to have paid off, because Bledsoe just opened her own brick-and-mortar shop in the heart of Buckhead this week. While the most exciting part of this may seem like it would be that the masses can pop in to pick up a Caramel Banana Tassies w/ Pecan shortbread crust, Georgia Peach Pie, or Watermelon Chiffon Pie whenever they want, it gets better: Bledsoe plans to stay open until 2 a.m. on the weekends.

Drunken blueberry rhubarb pie? Yes please.

Morelli’s ice cream adds location, Bad Dog Taqueria opens and more

The second Morelli’s Gourmet Ice Cream and Desserts opens soon in the Edgewood Shopping District. The store will be giving away free ice cream from 12-2 p.m. on opening day in celebration of its opening. Note: opening day was originally scheduled for June 4, now it is TBA.

Woodfire Grill’s Kevin Gillespie is a partner in this new store, located in a former Coldstone Creamery space. Gillespie will create seasonal selections for the milkshake and sundae bar the new location features. Rotating ice cream, gelato and sorbet flavors will be available daily along with three to four signature shakes, ice cream cakes, smoothies and frappes.
