Say “Ole!” to Monday: Cinco de Mayo Festivities

“Cinco de Mayo is one of our biggest events all year,” Co-owner Andy McKoski said of Tin Lizzy’s Cantina. “Everyone comes out to have a good time, whether it is to eat with friends or enjoy some cold drinks in the warm weather.”

5_5_tacosSure, there were festivities all weekend, but this is the day for a true “fiesta!” Don your sombreros and leave the office a little early today. After all, Americans consume more than 81 million pounds of avocados on Cinco de Mayo, according to the California Avocado Commission. For those taco and chip lovers, there are 367 US tortilla manufacturers, according to the US Census. Facts aside, if you didn’t get enough tacos, salsa and tequila this weekend, there are a few specials worth checking out for Monday.

Their Tacos and Graffiti pop-up debuts today at 5 p.m. with a la carte tacos curated by Chef Jared Lee Pyles. The “soda pig” with mango-apple pico and pork rinds  sounds like a salty crunch of adventure to the islands. Meanwhile, Jesse Jaeger will be creating graffiti outside the restaurant.

The annual “tacos and tequila” kicks off today with specially paired tacos and tequila concoctions. Choose one taco for $4, two for $7 or three for $10; tequila drink pairings are $8 each. The slow roasted chicken paired with a siesta margarita will surely wake up your senses from the Monday lull.

The Original El Taco

This may be a good crawl for those living in the Highlands, as this neighborhood cantina is easily walkable. Good things come for $12- cold $12 buckets of Dos Equis Amber and Lager bottles and 22-ounce el Jimador tequila house margaritas.

Zocalo

Guacamole dates back to Aztec times, and Zocalo celebrates the green machine of Mexican cuisine. They’re offering flavors you’d never expect, like “Baja guacamole” with kiwi, jicama, strawberry, mango, mint and chile arbol and the “Pacifico guacamole” with grilled beet, roasted walnut, queso fresco, diced orange and citrus-chipotle salt.

May 5, 1862 was the day the French were defeated for like five minutes in Mexico during the French Occupation that led to the Second Mexican Empire under Napoleon.
If the USA had not been involved in its own Civil War at the time it would have allocated more resources to defeating Napoleon’s forces and driving the French out of Mexico in order to install its own puppet government. Seven out of every 10 Georgians blame this political failure on President Obama.
