Talking food and drink with the stars of “Archer”

Alter egos of H. Jon Benjamin and Aisha Taylor

So, mere hours before going away for spring break with my family, I found myself talking food and drink at a cast party for “Archer” — the FX Network animated series.

The occasion was a performance of “Archer Live!” at the Tabernacle, a comedy/variety/audience participation  show. Several of the show’s vocal talents — including H. Jon Benjamin (Sterling Archer), Aisha Tyler (Lana King), Chris Parnell (Cyril Figgis) and Lucky Yates (Doctor Krieger) were joined onstage by the band Drivin’ ad Cryin’ as well as select blissed-out audience geeks in full costume.

Then everyone (minus the audience but plus many of the 70-some folks who produce the show at FX’s Atlanta studio) moseyed over to Watershed on Peachtree for cocktails, bar burgers and assorted eats. I spent some time chatting with series star H. Jon Benjamin, who lives in New York and counts Soto Japanese Restaurant among his favorite places to eat in the city. He was introduced to Soto by another former Atlantan, the actor David Cross. Benjamin does make it Atlanta periodically, during which time he gets his Chick-fil-A fix. He notes there is one “secret” Chick-fil-A in Manhattan inside a New York University dining hall, but “if you want to eat there, you’ve got to date a freshman.”

Aisha Tyler, who voices Lana Price and co-hosts “The Talk” on CBS, lives in Los Angeles. Her food talk ran more to small restaurants with great cocktail programs, such as Curtis Stone’s tiny Beverly Hills spot, Maude. She likes to have a Boulevardier, which is Negroni made with bourbon rather than gin. The secret to a good craft cocktail? “You don’t teach recipes, you teach bloodlines,” she says, repeating the advice of a mixologist friend. When Tyler travels, she loves to dine out, and to prove her point, she whipped out her iPhone to show me picture after picture of food she had eaten. It looked not unlike mine…
