Pick 7: Fat Tuesday Festivities

If ever we needed an excuse to party so early in the week, Fat Tuesday is the perfect chance. This day is meant for splurging, so before you give up your indulgences, use tonight as a final feast of richer and fattier foods before the Lenten season. Atlanta may be 470 miles away from New Orleans but restaurants are bringing the bayou to you.

South City Kitchen Vinings

Whether you can’t decide on what type of New Orleans food you like best, or you want to try it all, the “Taste of New Orleans” menu showcases “Nawlins” delicacies. Think Louisiana gumbo, gulf crab and apple beignets, and crispy buttermilk catfish. You might as well have your booze on your dessert with a pineapple-banana rum caramel glaze atop the Ambrosia “Pain Perdu.”

10th & Piedmont

What’s the opposite of fasting? All you can eat and drink. 10th & Piedmont is hosting a low country boil with premium beers tonight at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 in advance (online) or $45 at the door. Local singer/songwriter James Patrick Morgan will perform his melodic acoustic style throughout the evening.

Ray’s in the City

Not everyone can make it to Bourbon Street but luckily Peachtree Street isn’t far. Plus, you don’t have to worry about a cover charge. Ray’s in the City is featuring fun drink specials, live music and Cajun-inspired appetizers.

A traditional part of New Orleans’s Christian faith is a special ring-shaped cake called the King Cake, eaten in honor of the three kings. You can pre-order yours from Corner Café during regular hours today. Hidden in each cake is a plastic baby, and the lucky person who eats the slice with the surprise is deemed with continuing the festivities and hosting next year’s King Cake party.

They’ve already been partying since the weekend, and tonight there is more booze (Hurricanes, Abita, Purple Haze), more food (50 cent oysters, housemade andouille sausage, po-boys) and live music (Mudcat & His Party Band.) Chef Eric Guillot is from Louisiana so expect a party done right.

Serpas True Food
659 Auburn Avenue,Atlanta
Chef Scott Serpas is another New Orleans chef who always throws an annual Fat Tuesday celebration. His special menu features authentic dishes like seafood gumbo, muffuletta sandwiches, crawfish pie and chicken jambalaya. Plus there will be signature Louisiana cocktails and live jazz music. There is a $10 cover charge.

Southern Art and Bourbon Bar
3315 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta
If you just need a pick-me-up after work (and some good live New Orleans jazz), Bourbon Bar has mixed a special “Hurricane Shine” cocktail for $6. This country concoction features Steinshine Moonshine, orange juice, pineapple, grenadine and simple syrup. They’ve got you covered with complimentary bites of New Orleans boudin from 5- 7p.m.

We will celebrate Fat Tue with an Etouffee. Branching out a little this year and make it with bay scallops and kielbasa sausage in a lobster broth.

Bal, they’re nothing like doughnuts. They’re basically fritters of sugar held together with flour and covered with a sugar glaze. Even Krispy Kreme would look and those and say, “that makes my teeth hurt.”

Its the whole, get rid of the leavened flour thing, but covered in sugar rather than pancake syrup.

Kar….ok…..but I must rely on pictures most of the time, and it sure looks like a plain cake donut and I really wanted one.
CandyKane……..after reading your post we made Etouffee last nite just as you described. Outstanding results. Thanks! Now the next 40 days without cheese. I hate Lent. But I think that’s the idea behind the traditional ritual of penance.
