Sweet Auburn Barbecue open in Poncey-Highland


Known mainly as a food truck and catering operation in recent times, Sweet Auburn Barbecue has quietly opened a new brick-and-mortar restaurant in the former Pura Vida space on North Highland Avenue.

An expanded menu, full service, and a full bar are all part of the new deal.

Look for sandwiches, a la carte barbecue and sides, and more unusual offerings, such as coconut lemongrass spare ribs and maple-glazed smoked Peking duck, that reflect chef Ronald Hsu’s Asian heritage.

The executive chef for the Poncey-Highland location is Marshall Rogers, who will execute Hsu’s vision of Asian-inspired Southern cuisine and fusion barbecue.

Bartender Reuben Victor, formerly of Holeman & Finch, is developing the beverage program, which will feature absinthe service, local craft beers, and a seasonal cocktail menu.

Is a place with a “beverage program” really a barbecue restaurant? Shouldn’t it just be sweet tea?

Fusion lends itself well to some culinary treats– barbeque ain’t one. Coconut lemon grass is welcome at many types of restaurants—barbeque ain’t one. Love to sip absinthe at a variety of establishments—barbeque ain’t one. Executive chef is a required at most eateries—barbeque ain’t one. Peking Duck is a welcome menu item at many spots—barbeque ain’t one. Cinder block building on a back road with a dirt floor and overwhelming aroma of smokey pork being turned over a wood fired grill by a lifetime pitmaster—barbeque it is.

Best of luck—hope it is a great success–look forward to trying out your place.

After the initial wave of folks visit this place, it has no chance of making it as a Bar-B-Que joint. Open Air it ain’t. Sounds like Sonny’s with valet parking!

When I saw the bi-line, I thought good, more BBQ to talk about. This place has not fooled anybody, it looks like. It reminds me of those Yankee’s up in Kentucky trying to pass off mutton as BBQ. If that’s all they have, that’s fine. But when you have a choice, you seek out a joint and give it a try to get your pork fix! Low and slow. With or without rub. With or without sauce. But you know its a good attempt to serve a Southern staple and you tip your cap to them. Coconut lemon grass is nobody’s secret ingredient at a cook-off contest.

I’ve OD’ed on the good old boys strut on barbeque – ugh. Growing up in the backwoos of south GA I’ve lived and breathed the whole shtick you boys are tootin’ your bbq horns over. ATL has a gracious plenty of bbq JOINTS so try to grow up in this ever changing world. I mean, once upon a time it would’ve been blasphemous eat raw fish down here….don’t some of you guys partake of sushi on occasion? just sayin’…..

Lizzy…..somethings don’t need to change, they are that good. But Sweet Auburn will not be a stop for those that like bbq. I don’t do sushi, not because it is new. It just does not suit my taste buds but I have made numerous tries at the encouragement of my wife and daughters. It just didn’t take! The ever changing world is not always a good thing. I must admit, air condition has grown on me as has oleo.

@Lizzy, I think your post is a little over the top. Not long ago, eating chicken wings were throw out and never eaten. It’s called evolving not blasphemous. Even Balt has evolved into using oleo. lol
