Pick 7: Russian Vodka for the Sochi Winter Olympics

Today marks the opening ceremonies for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. We felt it was only necessary to celebrate with the “water of life.” That translates from the Russian word “zhiznennaia voda,” AKA vodka. We aren’t talking about “sex on the beach” or “vodka cranberry” wells, we’re talking about the authentic Russian-style liquor served to the vodka purists. Throughout your time watching the games, don’t forget to have one of these Russian vodka drinks in hand.

All three of these bars are shaking up your history lesson with “Putin’s Patience.” This concoction features Stoli vodka, maraschino, crème de violette and lemon juice. A hint of floral, a bittersweet cherry tang and a kick of vodka.

Cook Hall

The Cardamom Caipiroska is the winter version of the Caipirinha, except this cocktail substitutes Russian Standard vodka with cachaça. Cardamom honey and chili tincture give you an earthy spice with a kick.

10th & Piedmont
991 Piedmont Avenue NE, Atlanta

While flights to Russia may be out of your price range, the vodka flights at 10th & Piedmont won’t be. Half-priced vodka flights are offered throughout the Winter Olympics. We recommend the “USSR” with Russian Standard, Snow Queen, Stoli Gold and Beluga.

Ri Ra Irish Pub
1080 Peachtree Street, Atlanta
404-477-1700

Ri Ra is known for their celebrations of international sports like soccer, so of course they have giant big screens airing the Winter Olympics. Pay tribute to Sochi with a caramel white Russian made with Absolut vanilla, Bailey’s caramel cream and half and half.

No better way to get closer to the Winter part of these Olympics than by “chilling” at the solid ice-top bar and watching the games on a ten foot projector. A special $5 Russian Standard martini is being sold during the Olympic Games along with themed cocktails such as the “Shaun White martini,” “The Sochi” and “The Mother Russia.” All are shaken with Russian Standard vodka

Cypress Street Pint & Plate
817 West Peachtree Street, Atlanta
404-825-9243
www.cypressbar.com
Giddy up to the bar at Cypress Street and get a “Moscow Mule,” a craft mix of ginger beer, Russian Standard vodka and lime juice. With multiple television sets, you can pretend like you’re watching alpine skiing even though we know you’re watching curling out of the corner of your eye.

Food 101
4969 Roswell Road #200, Atlanta

But if you don’t like vodka, not to worry! The “White Buffalo” was curated just as Erskine Gwinn substituted the bourbon for the gin in the Nigroni to come up with the Boulevardier. JD Doyle from the Barrel Bar at Food 101 is substituting bourbon for vodka in the “White Russian” for a take on this cocktail with Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Kahlua Coffee Liqueur, Buffalo Trace Cream Liqueur and half & half.

Tito’s (from Texas, not Russia) with a twist of lemon and an ice cube. What more do you need?

Great sport those single malt games. They say Glenlevett is the favorite for the down hill nose dive.

Ned, had no idea you were once a professional and Olympic participant! Impressive. Have never seen one but they say the ‘oak cask’ medal is awesome looking. Story says when you look at it, you see double.

Amateur, strictly amateur. Do it solely for the love of competition. Czar Ice Bar is indeed an interesting place. Took niece and friends there for 21st birthday party. Unique decor. Decent sushi and absolutely wonderful service. Server well versed in vodkas but had little knowledge of Russian history. Had to explain who Solzhenitsyn was. Come to think about it, had to explain that to all the kids at the table also. Good time was had by all.

Solzhenitsyn is one of the lucky few to survive interrogation at Lubyanka prison.
