Recently there has been some buzz about Atlanta’s burgers. The Varsity’s burger was voted by TIME as one of the most influential burgers for coining terms like “all the way” and “walk a steak.” As iconic as the Varsity is, we think a bite into one of these burgers is hiding a celebration of flavors between the bun. We didn’t say these were healthy, but they sure will fill you up.
1. Cypress Street Pint & Plate
817 West Peachtree Street, Atlanta
Imagine a burger sandwiched between two donuts. There you have it. The “Sublime” burger. It happens to be the only way you can eat glazed Sublime donuts. Oh yeah, there’s bacon and cheddar stuffed in there too. The food coma will come later.
2. The Vortex
879 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta
438 Moreland Avenue, Atlanta
The “Fat Elvis” will make you have to shake those hips to burn off all the calories from this burger slathered with peanut butter, bacon and banana. If you’re skeptical consider the basic ingredients: peanut butter and banana is a winning pair, beef and buns are classic and bacon is always welcome.
3. Poor Calvin’s
510 Piedmont Avenue NE
Bringing together three cultures, the lamb burger is a fusion of flavor. Take Mediterranean lamb, top it with American blue cheese crumbles and pimento, and cushion that between two rice cakes with Thai curry sauce. Bam.
4. Grindhouse Burger
209 Edgewood Avenue, Atlanta
As if tacos were not enough for pico de gallo sauce, the “Gringo Style” serves up a hunk of beef with a refreshing punch of jalepeno, tomatoes and onions. This one is sure to fire up your mouth with a spicy habanero Diablo sauce. Good thing you have bread to tame the flames.
5. Yeah! Burger
1017 North Highland Avenue, Atlanta
1168 Howell Mill Road, Suite E, Atlanta
Bon Appetit’s praised these guys as one of the best burger joints. If you are one of those people that enjoys a fancy burger, the “Fig and Goat Cheese” is straight off the farm. Give your turkey burger a little spunk with tangy local goat cheese, hydroponic arugula and sticky fig jam.
6. Ssam Burger
2072 Defoors Ferry Road, Suite F, Atlanta
We’ve seen Asian fusion in barbeque and tacos, but behold! Its come to burgers. Ssam has a few eye-brow raising options like the “Kimcheese” burger that pairs smoky provolone cheese with a refreshing kimchi kick.
