After nixing smoking, Manuel’s raises chickens

Manuel's Chicken

On New Year’s Day, Manuel’s Tavern went smoke-free. A few days later, owner Brian Maloof announced another big change via Facebook: the addition of a new rooftop chicken coop, where Speckled Sussex and Australian Australorp hens will be laying organic eggs for weekend brunch.

“Yes, chickens living on Manuel’s roof.”

What’s next? Smoothies and a vegan menu?

Given the horrible conditions in all the factory farms that produce eggs (plenty of videos and information on the web if you have the courage and the stomach) this is a great move. Chickens with room to move around, fresh air, good food, etc. produce eggs that look so much better, are so much healthier, and taste so much better than those from “battery cage” chickens. I know his customers will appreciate the improvement. Just don’t be scared when you see the eggs, the orange thing is the yolk. They are supposed to be that color – not the sickly pale yellow you are used to. As for the vegan menu and smoothies, we can always dream.

As a long timer from college, I applaud both decisions. Way to go, Brian.

Manuel’s is still a great place after all these years. These improvements only make it that much better. A really great design on the chicken environment, too. And YES to the no-smoking!!!
