Pick 5: Health Food Stores

Happy New Year Atlanta! Have you made a resolution to eat healthier? Maybe you’re trying out a new diet like gluten-free or vegan, but don’t know where to find natural groceries? We come to the rescue with five health food stores beyond the larger chains like Whole Foods and Dekalb Farmers Market. We listed the features of locally owned stores for bulk foods, supplements and ready made foods. Have we missed one of your favorites?

Return to Eden
2335 Cheshire Bridge Road, Atlanta
404-320-3336
www.return2eden1.com
Return to Eden has a large selection of gluten-free and allergy-free goods, such as Frannie’s Gluten Free and DeLand Bakery. Look for orange stickers around the store for deals. If you’re looking for a quick pick-up, they sell foods from R. Thomas Deluxe Grille, the healthy diner in Buckhead. By signing up for their weekly email, you get a chance to earn savings.
Includes: take home foods, bulk department, supplements

Nuts ‘N Berries
4274 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta
404-254-0330
www.nutsnberries.com
A smaller market, this is a great stop for lunch or to get a quick meal replacement bar. They frequently have samples and are a big Chuice supplier. Check out local artisan Souvei chutneys for a great topping to sandwiches or meats. The owner, Soodi Kick, is a Certified Nutritionist so if you need a little help with shopping, seek him out.
Includes: salad bar, supplements

Sevananda Natural Foods
467 Moreland Avenue NE, Atlanta
404-681-2831
www.sevananda.coop
An icon in Five Points, you benefit most if you join their co-op, which gives you access to exclusive classes and savings. The biggest bang for the buck is the bulk department, which is far bigger than most others and includes bulk olive oils, soy sauces, soup mixes, nuts and grains. Be warned that the store doesn’t carry is meat, fish and alcohol. Since many farmers markets are closed now, this is a great spot for local produce, as they partner with Georgia Organics.
Includes: salad bar, take home food, bulk department, supplements

Boxcar Grocer
249 Peters Street SW, Atlanta
404-883-3608
www.boxcargrocer.com
Tucked away in Castlebury Hills, a brother and sister pair run the shop. They are the ones who make your pressed panini or brew your coffee. Think of their concept as a healthy “convenience market” that carries primarily packaged natural foods. With a strong focus on the community, you can find Sweet Georgia Grains products here.
Includes: deli, coffee

Rainbow Natural Foods
2118 N. Decatur Road, Atlanta
404-636-5553
www.rainbowgrocery.com
This spot has been around Decatur for more than 35 years. If you’re looking for a quick pick-up meal that is 100% vegetarian, their hot bar specials are listed on the website weekly, so you know just what to expect.
Includes: hot bar, salad bar, take home foods, bulk department, supplements
