Kitchen fire closes The Optimist

070612kesslerA grease fire that started in the kitchen ventilation hood last Wednesday has closed The Optimist — the highly successful Westside restaurant owned by Ford Fry.

The fire has caused serious damage to the kitchen and to the building’s exhaust system. The restaurant will remain closed until repairs are completed and the restaurant passes city inspection.

Fry says he hopes to reopen the restaurant sometime next week. In the interim, reservations are being redirected to Fry’s other restaurants, which include JCT. Kitchen & Bar as well as King + Duke.

I hope no one was injured, most especially any of the responding firefighters.

What’s with the kitchen fires? Does Atlanta have a budding serial kitchen fire arsonist on its hands?

AzCat…..many kitchen fires start because of trapped grease in overhead vents.

I believe this is the third such incident at high profile restaurants this year. Are there design flaws in these systems?

I wonder if the hood cleaning companies around Atlanta are really doing their job!!!!!! Or are they just saying they have cleaned the ducts! Ducts are supposed to be cleaned every four months.

kip……I can’t speak for the Atl hood cleaning companies but the ones we have used over the years did everthing required. My memory tells me that there are a couple things that determine a required cleaning; 1. total sales of the business or 2. the type of cooking done. If the business does nothing but fried foods, more frequent cleanings may be required. I think 6 mons is a minimum cleaning to get a good grade from inspectors. Many if not all inspectors will give you 5-7 days to get your vents cleaned before issuing a health grade %.

Ah haah! I tried to contact you John (by Facebook) when I heard about this last week. I’m glad to hear it wasn’t a complete loss. Hopefully they get back up & serving soon.
