Another Beery Weekend

Atlanta has become a Beer Town. Almost every day of the week, you can find a tasting somewhere. And beer festivals and events featuring local breweries are everywhere.

This weekend, the Porter Beer Bar continues its 5th anniversary celebrations with three more “epic events, including a barley wine fest tonight, a customer appreciation anniversary bash on Saturday, and a Trappist ale flight night on Sunday. www.theporterbeerbar.com.

On Saturday, Sweetwater Brewing sponsors the End of Summer BBQ at Canoe, with food, Sweetwater beer, and live music. The Save Our Water wrap party is a benefit for Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, and SweetWater will present the check for this year’s campaign, which supports CRK’s river patrol and water monitoring programs in the Chattahoochee River watershed. $40 at the door, noon-3 p.m. www.Chattahoochee.org.

Also on Saturday, Tuner Field will be the backdrop for what’s billed as the biggest beer fest in Atlanta. Sample 150 beers, plus wine and cider. Most of the tasting action will take place in the Grand Entry Plaza and Monument Grove. Scout’s Alley games will be free, college football will be on TV, and there will be live music. $40 advance/$50 day of the event. 3-8 p.m. http://greatatlantabeerfest.com.

Save your beer festival liver for Hotoberfest. Alan does a great job getting a slew of rare and unique beers. Far better than the other festivals which cater to the mid 20 – 30s crowd looking to get drunk. The exception is the Atlanta Cask Ale fest in January. Most are one off brews unavailable anywhere else. It is smaller and less hectic than the typical festival.
