Waffle House comes to The Ted

Credit: AJC staff

With little hype or fanfare, one of the most successful restaurant chains in the country that originated out of Atlanta is expanding into the major leagues – Turner field will debut its first Waffle House today.

The announcement came from the Braves Twitter account (@Braves) yesterday, simply stating:

@WaffleHouse will make it’s debut @ Turner Field tomorrow. Serving hashbrowns & waffles with several different toppings. #smothered+covered

As one of the Southeast’s most trusted late night dining spots, this location at Turner Field marks Waffle House’s very first location that is NOT open 24 hours.

The menu is limited, offer only hashbrowns and waffles a few ways. After all of the improvements to the vending choices at The Ted – most notably, the addition of H&F burger – I can’t imagine a situation where a Braves game would be made worse by a stop through the Waffle House stand. Unless you order your hash browns “All the way.”($9)

In that case, you are just asking for trouble.

What do you think? Does Waffle House fit with the “Take me out to the Ballgame” ideal…is taking down a Cheese and Eggs as fun at a game as a hot dog? What other vendors would you like to see invade the Ted, pushing out the unremarkable nachos, hot dogs, and slices of greasy pizza?

Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out to the crowd.
By me some waffles and smothered hashbrowns
Waffle House belongs at The Ted

Then it’s poot, poot, poot with the home team.
If they don’t win it’s a shame!
Then it’s one, two, three, thousand fans with gas
At the old ball game!

Waffle House … is what it is and that’s good enough for most of us.

You really only miss the Waffle House when you’re out West or something and you can’t get to one. It’s a mental thing. At home, they are on every corner…..and I hardly ever go in one. Go figure.

Will the WAFFLE HOUSE location at Turner Field include the same automatic 20% “Security Surcharge” on every customer’s bill like the one at Underground Atlanta due to paying for extra security guards who can do nothing to protect customers from all the 0bama Supporters who want to panhandle, rob, rape, kill and/or steal from them once they are outside the walls of the ballpark?

I knew it wouldn’t take long for a racist political comment to emerge.

If a new Turner Field concession stand comes in, that likely means it is taking the place of something else.

Do you know what pre-existing eatery at The Ted has been removed to make way for Waffle House?

From a Twitter photo, it looks like it might be the *Chipper Jones Yicketty Yamwich* stand that we are losing.

I love Waffle House, but that’s not what I’m craving when I go to a ball game. I don’t see it lasting very long.

Will the surcharge also keep out all the racist cowards like Smothered & Chunked?

@Concerned Citizen

There is no need to be so ugly and call people horrible names on a FOOD Blog with your personal attacks.

if you don’t like WH or the Braves, that’s fine, but please keep your racism out of it. Personally, I like that Waffle House won’t allow you to panhandle me or my family while we are eating and watching baseball.

I don’t know. Foods that aren’t normally ballpark fare have been showing up in ballparks for a while now. If some parks have sushi, I don’t know why Turner Field can’t have Waffle House. At least it’s something different, and it was born in Atlanta.

@Byron’s Mom

I’d say Smothered & Chunked started the ugliness. And if you’re a selfish, arrogant, self-righteous condescending right wing racist like him that thinks all black people are criminals, then you deserve to be offended.

I could go for some double cheese Krystals at the TED or a spicy Chick-fil-A with waffle fries.

Waffle House is sort of odd for a baseball game.

Some $3 Cafe wings or Mellow Mushroom pizza would rock though!

Here’s one vote for banning anyone from the ISPP that used the handles “Smothered & Chunked” and “Concerned Citizen” from commenting on this blog ever again.
(They’re the same person)
Everyone has a little bit of racism in their heart. If they said they didn’t they’d be lying.
But anybody who is worth a nickel is doing all they can to be part of the solution, not the problem.
And that means acknowledging it for what it is and trying to make it go away.
If you use the term “Obama Supporters” as a disparaging term you are definitely part of the problem, and society as a whole will be better off when mouth-breathing knuckle-draggers like you die off.
Until then, I’d be happy seeing you banned from this blog.
And, btw, it’s not a First Amendment issue. Come by my office and pay me a $1,500 retainer, and I’ll be glad to explain the issue to you. Loser.

Also, having Waffle House @ the Ted seems like a good idea, for lots of reasons.

I have no problem with it at all because there are some of us that doesn’t eat breakfast in the morning time and there’s not much choices for people that are vegetarian (not that I am one of them) but I think it’s a good idea.

I’m for the Varsity too! It would be great to have a chili dog, chili steak, and some of those greasy onion rings! Not good for you, but nice to have every once in a while!

Grandview…it’s the likes of you that is more of the problem. Got yourself a law degree and now you have to go create “work”. That isnt a white or black thing…Im Irish/Kroean married to a Puerto Rican. Lawyers are the scum of the earth. So please, Grandview excuse yourself from this blog as well. And go pave a parking lot, build a deck or generally do something that resembles real work. Im a Lawyer….hahahahahahahah,,,uhhhh, hahahahahahahah!!!

I would second the Varsity. Chick-Fil-A might not work because there are Sunday ballgames, and probably gay Braves fans.

Waffle House is ok. Though I do not care for their food I’m sure there are plenty who do. I like the ideas of The Varsity and Mellow Mushroom suggested by others. Also, how about a Panera Bread Company or a Chipotle.

Only in ATL does an article about Waffle House turn racist. Sad. AJC should stop this needless torment, and screen these dang comments. Geez!

Mostly only commenting here because I still can, this subscription thing is the dumbest thing the AJC ever did, and that’s saying a lot.
I agree that it looks like the Yikkety Yamwich stand is going, going, gone. Mellow Mushroom, Varsity, and JR Cricket’s Wing Stand would make great additions, as well as having Atlanta roots.

They already sell Chcik-Fil-A at the games. I know they set up a stand behind section 106 because I’ve visited it twice this season. My stomach knows no politics….

“Smothered and Chunked” made NO MENTION OF RACE in his post…BUT A LOT OF THE NEGATIVE RESPONSES FROM LIBERALS CRIED “RACISM”. The ones that cried “racism” were the ones who brought race into the discussion.

I think it’s a brilliant idea. Atlanta is acknowledging it’s roots. It’s not what you think of when you want ballpark food but it’s different. I could see this becoming a “thing” when you go to the TED, especially if your an away fan or coming from out of town. And a previous poster is right, you only want it bad when you’re living away from one. or when it’s 3am. I live in masssachusetts now and i’ll be darned if i won’t stop there for some scattered smothered and covered, after i got my chick-fil-a fix in.

For those of you that have been to one of five states out west, and tried In & Out, could you imagine how popular that would be at the Ted ? Too bad that companies ideas of expansion will never get to Atlanta in our lifetimes.
As for racism, it is alive and well in Atlanta, this country, and this blog, so what ? When you get Trayvon’s grieving parents standing next to Al Sharpton, what do you think he brings to the table ? Too much crime and muders in this country for sure, and most of them are hispanic or black related, I dont forsee this getting any better.

I would submit that using the term “Obama Supporter” to describe the problems that are harming America is simply telling the truth! And the truth is that a Waffle House at Underground Atlanta felt the security issues there warranted the hiring of security personnel who, by city ordinance, are prohibited from actually carrying out arrest and detention duties. Yet, the cost of this was passed along to the customers in the form of a mandatory surcharge.

When someone tells the truth, he’s simply telling the truth. Perhaps liberals should embrace the truth for its liberating qualities. Might also wise them up to the harmful effects their policies have had on American society as a whole!

But, in the meantime, we’ll encounter liberals throwing out the race card because they think it will deter people from telling the truth. Well, NO MORE WILL THAT BE THE CASE! Get this through your thick heads, liberals! Americans are tired of the practice! We WILL SPEAK NOW! Because we are tired of liberal philosophies destroying our nation.

We will speak! And we will throw it right back in your face loudly and clearly!

i dont usually do blogs because nothing is going to get accomplished here. but i cant let this slide.

im far from liberal.

ive been going to braves games for years. ive never been robbed raped killed or had anything stolen at turner field. smothered & chunked’s comments do not belong in a blog about food. if he chooses not to attend braves games because he is afraid of “obama supporters” so be it. based on attendance the past few games, his decision not to attend clearly has no affect on any one else.

if he chooses to share his simple opinions about society i would hope in the future he uses the appropriate forum.

bentavious…….I have attended an insane amount of Braves games over the years; never had the problem of feeling unsafe or in danger. On at least a dozen occasions I have rode the subway thru Harlem to see games in the Bronx and had the same safe feeling there also. Don’t know what some of these folks are talking about. If you go and leave w/ the crowd you will be safe at any sporting event.
