Mexican Madness strikes Decatur

Guac on the patio at Hola!

Guac on the patio at Hola

In tomorrow’s newspaper, I’ll take a look at the sudden influx of Mexican restaurants in Decatur.

AJC Chief Dining Critic John Kessler writes about all cuisines.

Hola Mexican Cantina brings loads of color and some welcome energy to a prominent street corner.

Mar offers “coastal Mexico fare” in a pretty renovation of the space that had long been Feast.

Calle Latina serves tacos, tortas and Venezuelan arepas in a fast-casual (i.e., order at the counter) setting.

None of these three can match Decatur’s two standbys — Taqueria del Sol and Big Tex Cantina — for their sloppy Mexican goodness. But my early impression is that Calle Latina makes for a nice change of pace, while the other two will need to improve their food and (crucially) their margaritas to make me look forward to a return visit.

Have you been? Would love to hear your impressions.

What? Pay to read your pretentious ravings about these places, only to give them 2 stars?

What does it take to get more than 3? Sex in the alley?

The absurd concept of paying to read your opinion is only outdone by your perception that we would want to.

Thanks you for changing the wording on your link. And even adding Thanks!—-wow!
Taqueria Del Sol rocks–fresh and good and original. Always has.
Go Eddie! Go Michael!—Great guys, great restaurant.

I believe “sex in the alley” would deserve at least 4 stars.

Can’t believe the nasty ranting by some folks regarding myajc.com. Time to get over it, folks. Not everything is free in life.

@ Robert

Bite my clank.

My rant was directed at the blogger and the concept of having to pay to read said bloggers pretentious review……Not just having to pay.

Try to pay attention.

I’ve been a Mexican most of my life and I am offended at the headline for this story. To intimate that Mexicans suffer mental illness is just wrong.

You’ll be hearing from my lawyer, Arturo Leafblower Marquez

For all the Mexican restaurants in Atlanta there’s not one that I know of that makes good tamales! I used to get really good ones from a little hole in the wall off of Buford Highway. Sadly, it’s no longer there.

Good thing it did not say “African Madness” or Jesse and Al would have a protest march in decatur by day’s end. The paper is losing money since no one buys it as often. Therefore, they have to charge. Advertising money is drying up since circulation is down. Unfortunately, this paper continues to try to spread liberalism with their views (see luckovich and bookman) to a state that is conservative. That’s like trying to sell pork rinds to an Arab. At least the sunday paper is good for the funnies, coupons and the bottom of a bird cage.As for Mexican-La Parilla is best and if you want Colombian- Kioskos on the Marietta Square. YUMMY!

I tried MAR right after they opened. The food was good but the service was not. Very slow but I will chalk that up to working out the kinks of a new restaurant. I’ll try again and hopefully they will have made mucho improvement.

My two sisters and I all got food poisoning after eating at Hola. We aren’t sure what caused it, but we all ate the cheese dip, the salsa, and fish tacos. We all woke up at 3:00 and got sick. I ended up in the ER at Emory. Very bad morning. Be careful. Its a new restaurant, and I’m guessing the fish was bad.
